I have a 2005 PowerBook G4 with tiger 10.4, Do I have to upgrade to Leopard first and then Snow Leopard and can I do that on such an old operating system.
I have an old system Tiger 10.4 on a 2005 Power Book G4 and wonder if I can upgrade to Leopard or can skip to Snow Leopard.
A 2005 PowerBook has enough horsepower ro run OS 10.5 Leopard If you have enought RAM. However, no pre-Intel Mac can use any higher Mac OS. 10.6 and higher MUST have an Intel processor, a feature not incorporated in Mac notebooks until 2006.

Install OS 9 on PowerBook G4 with Tiger
I have a 2003 17" PowerBook G4 with Tiger installed on it. I need to have Classic on it. The original PowerBook restore disk will not install OS 9 or anything else because, it says, the operating system on the computer is newer than the restore disk's. I want to just install OS 9 so that I can have Classic, but have not found a way to do this. The PB G4 is not OS 9-bootable. Any ideas?
On the PB G4 Restore Disk there is an installer for additional software and classic support. However, it doesn't work. When I run it, it goes for a minute, then opens a window requesting I insert the disk with a matching design on it. What it's requesting is the same CD that's already in there, but since it doesn't know it's there, I eject it and re-insert it. Still it does nothing. The only option is to Quit. There is nothing from the regular OS X installation to install Classic.
So, is my only option to use the Restore disk on a Firewire drive, install OS X and Classic on it, then copy it over to my regular boot drive?

I have a Mac Powerbook G4 with OS X10.4.11 and would like to download the latest compatible Firefox. I believe it is 3.6 and I did not see this version as available for download, I only saw later versions which would not work on my Mac. Im a new Mac user. I currently just bought a new MacBook Pro. The first computer I got apparently had a problem with the flex, so I had to go change it for a new one. The first one had the latest operating system, the second one the store gave me didn't, yet it's still a brand new computer, so I don't see why I should have to pay for the new operating system, which should already come with my brand new computer. So I am trying to contact apple so they may give me permission to download it from the app store for free, due to this inconvenience and first bad experience. The vendor tells me that sometimes new computers may come with old operating systems because they're from an old batch of new computers. Oh and by the way, I'm from Honduras, and bought it at Jetstereo, in Tegucigalpa (the capital). This store is a licensed distributor.

This is the third time of writing this on your Apple Support Communities! My Ipod Classic will not sync. I have had it checked over at an Apple Genius Bar and also its lead - they say it is OK. I have had my computer checked at the place that built it for me (Windows 7 desktop when I found Windows 8 childish and irritating). After collecting it, I again had the Ipod symbol back on my library page, which was a step forward. However, the Ipod still won't sync.
I have tried other USB ports. I have tried removing Itunes from computer and downloading it again - with the latest version of course. I have tried authorising my computer. I have tried resetting the Ipod. I have tried ringing the Apple helpline at vast expense - the first assistant was helpful and went through a number of procedures before suggesting I removed and replaced Itunes and then rang back after doing this. I was given a reference number to quote so that I wouldn't need to go through the whole rigmarole again with another assistant. But, unfortunately, I got an extremely offensive young man who more or less called me a liar when I quoted the job number I had been given. He flatly refused to accept that I had already spent ages on the phone that afternoon and said that my last call to Apple, to which the reference number referred, had been in November 2011. When I asked to speak to a manager, he put the phone down for ages and left me paying for minutes, just waiting. I put the phone down eventually and rang back, got this person again, and again asked to speak to a manager, whereupon the phone was put down on me. Needless to say, I am not keen to try this phone service again in a hurry. But I do desperately want to be able to download my Economist in audio podcasts, which I have been without for a whole month now. Please can someone knowledgeable take pity and help me? By the way, what does IOS mean? (I thought IO stood for operating system, but am flummoxed by the S on the end. I have a newly built computer using Windows 7, the latest updated version.chicx wrote:

Far too much uneccesary information in your post, which only confuses things, a vast amount!
Let's start with iTunes.
Have you updated iTunes to 11.1.5, because the previous version did appear to have an issue about seeing iPods?
With iTunes 11.1.5 installed, look in Edit/Preferences/Devices, (or use the ALT key, followed by the E key and then the F key) and make sure that the box named Prevent iPods, iPhones and iPads from syncing automatically does not have a tick in the box.
Once you have doen those two things, check to see if the iPod is seen by iTunes.

Really?
OS stands for Operating System. (In computer speak, IO means Input/Output.)
iOS originally stood for iPhone Operating System, but it now refers to the iPod Touch and iPhone. The iPod Classic, which you have listed in your profile as your iPod, does not use iOS.
I assume that you have been listening to the Podcast in your iTunes on the computer as you cannot transfer it to your iPod. It's what I'd do. -
I have a mid 2010 Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard and foolishly upgraded to Yosemite. Now have numerous problems. Is it possible to go back in time with Time Machine and reinstall Snow Leopard? Then upgrade to Lion or Mavericks? Any other ideas on how I can exit Yosemite?
Once you get yourself back to Snow Leopard, if you still want to upgrade somewhat, I would suggest the following:
1. Get an external hard drive that you can use for experiments with new OS versions. You could partition it into 2 or 3 partitions. You could then clone your existing Snow Leopard system to one partition using Carbon Copy Cloner (well worth $40) or SuperDuper ($25).
2. Buy OS X Mountain Lion for $20, through the Apple online store (I don't think it's available through the App Store). Apple has decided to make it very difficult for anyone to get Mavericks unless they have already downloaded it.
You will receive two e-mails from Apple, one containing a PDF with a redemption code, and one with the password you will need to unlock the PDF. Using the code, you will download Mountain Lion from the App Store, where it will appear among your Purchased items.
After ML finishes downloading, its installer app will launch itself. When you see this launch screen, QUIT the install app immediately! Go to your applications folder, find the Install OS X Mountain Lion app, and copy it to a safe location outside of your Applications folder. Keeping one or more copies will allow you to reinstall without unnecessary aggravation if you later need or want to do that. At this point, you can re-launch the Installer in the Applications folder and let it run. You can install it on a clean partition on your external HD, or you can allow it to upgrade the Snow Leopard clone you created on your external drive, or you can do both. This should allow you to test how everything works for as long as you like.
3. If you left yourself a free partition on your test drive, try a clean install of Yosemite and set everything up from scratch (do not migrate anything). This will allow you to see whether your problems with it were related to something in your Snow Leopard system. -
I have 10.6 8 Snow Leopard and trying to download yosemite by it keeps failing. Are there other operating systems in between that need to be installed first?
Before embarking on a major OS upgrade, it would be wise, advisable and very prudent if you backup your current system to an external connected and Mac formatted Flash drive OR externally connected USB, Thunderbolt or FireWire 800, Mac formatted hard drive. Then, use either OS X Time Machine app to backup your entire system to the external drive OR purchase, install and use a data cloning app, like CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper, to make an exact and bootable copy (clone) of your entire Mac's internal hard drive. This step is really needed in case something goes wrong with the install of the new OS or you simply do not like the new OS, you have a very easy way/procedure to return your Mac to its former working state.
Then, determine if your Mac meets ALL minimum system install requirements.
To install OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, 10.9 Mavericks (free upgrade, but currently unavailable) or OS X 10.10 Yosemite (currently available free upgrade) you need one of these Macs:

If you run any older Mac software from the earlier PowerPC Macs, then none of this software will work with the newer OS X versions (10.7 and onward). OS X Snow Leopard had a magical and invisible PowerPC emulation application, called Rosetta, that worked seamlessly in the background that still allowed older PowerPC coded software to still operate in a Intel CPU Mac.
The use of Rosetta ended with OS X Snow Leopard as the Rosetta application was licensed to Apple, from a software company called Transitive, which got bought out, I believe, by IBM and Appe could no longer secure their rights to continue to use Rosetta in later versions of OS X.
So, you would need to check to see if you have software on your Mac that maybe older than, say, 2006 or older.

If you have any commercial antivirus installed and/or hard drive cleaning apps installed on your Mac, like MacKeeper, CleanMyMac, TuneUpMyMac, MacCleanse, etc. now would be a good time to completely uninstall this apps by doing a Google search to learn how to properly uninstall these types of apps.
These types of apps will only cause your Mac issues later after the install of the new OS X version and you will have to completely uninstall these types of apps later.
Once you have determined all of this, you should be able to find the latest versions of OS X by clicking on the Mac App Store icon in the OS X Dock and then login to the Mac App Store using your Apple ID and password and if you purchased a download code, input that code.
You can then begin the download and installation process of installing the newer versions of OS X from the Mac App Store. -

Be sure to start your iMac using its original grey System Install DVD: Insert that disc and start your Mac while holding the d key. At the Mac OS X Utilities screen select Disk Utility and format the hard disk. Select "Mac OS X Extended (Journaled)".

I have a copy of Windows 7, and I am trying to bring up Boot Camp on my MacBook with Snow Leopard. But my Snow Leopard install disk is too old for Windows 7, so attempted Boot Camp install of drivers fails.
I have hand-installed the NVidia graphics driver, and I have keyboard, minimal trackpad, and hardwire to internet all working. So the WIndows machine is usable. But I am hurting for wi-fi, better trackpad, and whatever else is delivered by Boot Camp. I can't use any of the Boot Camp upgrades because I do not have XP or Vista.While we all have MacBooks in this forum not all of us use Boot Camp. How do I erase my hard drive? My initial operating system was Snow Leopard but I have upgraded to Mavericks OS. My Snow Leopard install disk ejects when I try and use it.
Do a backup, preferable 2 separate ones on 2 drives. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors. Reformat the drive using Disk Utility/Erase Mac OS Extended (Journaled), then click the Option button and select GUID. Then re-install the OS.

I have a 15" MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion installed. I have partitioned the hard drive into two partitions. Is it possible to install Snow Leopard on the second partition? If so how do I do it?
If your MacBook Pro had Snow Leopard on it at one time then sure. (Early 2011 or earlier)
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
Obviously choose the second partition to install into. It has to be OS X Extended journaled formatted in Disk Utility (BootCamp software makes it a MSDOS/FAT32 formatted partition if you used that to partition with)
If it's a Early 2011 or Late 2011 that came with 10.7, it's possible, but it's not easy.
