Make the device a favorite.
Also, I would reset the PRAM and SMC.

  • I have an iMac G4 PowerPC with OS 10.5.? The OS10.5.8 update failed. Now get blue screen and error-can't find Intel Power Manager. What now??

I have an iMac G4 PowerPC with OS 10.5.? After deleting 17G of music files to make room on the 74G drive, The iPhoto and iWeb updates seemed to load okay, but the OS 10.5.8 update failed - message opened said the computer encountered an error and must shut down. Now I get the blue screen. Startup with 'V' pressed shows multiple lines saying: error-can't find IntelCPU Power Manager. What now?? I  reset PRAM, I think.....?????

I am concerned that you might have applied a system updated intended for an Intel iMac, while you have a PPC (non-Intel) iMac. Your PPC OS should not be looking for an "IntelCPU Power Manager."
Have you tried booting from the 10.5 install DVD/CD and repairing the hard drive, plus repairing permissions?
If you done the repairs mentioned above, and your problem still persists, you can also try doing a safe boot. (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455 ) Then, if none of these things worked, if I were in your shoes (it's hard to diagnose these things without being there in person) I would first check that there is adequate disk space, then I would boot from the 10.5 DVD/CD install disk and reinstall the operating system. There is an option to do an archive and install preserving user files/settings, that would be the option you want, as it will save your files but install a new OS. Make sure you have a good backup of your files first. If you do not have one, use "target mode" to copy all your files before embarking on an new OS install. Assuming that you do succeed with this install, then use Software Update to get the right updates for your iMac.

  • I have an iMac 5.1 with Mac OSX 10.6.8 and 2 GB memory and an L2 cache of 4 GB.   lately I have been receiving error messages of " start up disk almost full; please delete files." is the start up disk the same thing as the hard drive?

I have an iMac 5.1 with Mac OSX 10.6.8 and 2 GB memory and an L2 cache of 4 GB.   lately I have been receiving error messages of " start up disk almost full; please delete files." is the start up disk the same thing as the hard drive?  I opened the hard drive and from the column on the left of the menu I've selected "search for" and under that " all images" then "all documents"  I've deleted a few files from each. Are documents and images that I have deleted from here also deleted from the folders on my desktop?

You should never, EVER let a conputer hard drive get completely full, EVER!
With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space.
If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your iMac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what to archive and what to delete.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Delete any other mail in your Junk folders. Also, look through your Sent Mail to see if there is anything that can be deleted.
Other things you can do to gain space.
Once you have around 15 GBs regained, do a search, download and install OmniDisk Sweeper.
This app will help you locate files that you can move/archive and/or delete from your system.
STAY AWAY FROM DELETING ANY FILES FROM OS X SYSTEM FOLDER!
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
    Good Luck!

Be sure to start your iMac using its original grey System Install DVD: Insert that disc and start your Mac while holding the d key. At the Mac OS X Utilities screen select Disk Utility and format the hard disk. Select "Mac OS X Extended (Journaled)".
    Then, install OS X.

  • Hi, I have an imac G4 800 with a faulty disc drive and need Itunes 10.5!!

Hi, I have an imac G4 800 with a faulty disc drive.
I have just purchased an ipad2 and iphone 4s.. Only to find that I need itunes 10.5 and therefore a change to a newer operating system is required. I believe the leopard operating system is not supported on this machine, I have found some post that suggest that the processor speed can be altered during install to trick the installer to make it work could I do this from a friends machine externally??
Any suggestions? apart from buying a new computer!!
    Thank you in advance..

True enough, although I regard 'made to work' as an act of desperation!
But will iTunes 10.5 work even though the G4 has been press-ganged into accepting Leopard?
Macintosh Hardware requirements for iTunes 10.5:
Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5 or G4 processor and 512MB of RAM
To play Standard Definition video from the iTunes Store, a 1.0GHz PowerPC G4 or faster processor and 512MB of RAM is required
To play HD video, an iTunes LP, or iTunes Extras, a 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo or faster processor and 1GB of RAM is required
Screen resolution of 1024x768 or greater; 1280x800 or greater is required to play an iTunes LP or iTunes Extras
Broadband Internet connection to use the iTunes Store
Apple combo drive or SuperDrive to create audio, MP3, or back-up CDs; some non-Apple CD-RW recorders may also work
Apple SuperDrive to back up your library to DVDs; some non-Apple DVD-RW drives may also work

  • I have an iMac 5,1 with an Intel Core 2 Duo. I'd like to be able to use iCloud, but need Lion which is too big. How much memory can I add? And will this upgrade allow me to install Lion?

I have an iMac 5,1 with an Intel Core 2 Duo. I'd like to Lion, in order to use iCloud, but the specs indicate I don't have enough memory. How much memory can I add? And will this upgrade allow me to install Lion?

I believe your model iMac can address 3 GB RAM; the minimum for Lion is 2 GB - however, that is an absolute minimum for very light use. You would be much happier with a minimum of 4 GB.

(You can install 4 GB, but it will only be able to address about 3.1 - 3.2 GB)

  • HT5622 my wife and I have separate apple ID acts so that we could register our iPhones and iPads under our own names.  Can I have my iMac synch iCloud with both apple ID's so that both our calendars end up on our iMac?

my wife and I have separate apple ID acts so that we could register our iPhones and iPads under our own names.  Can I have my iMac synch iCloud with both apple ID's so that both our calendars end up on our iMac?

If have separate iCloud accounts and want to keep your all your iCloud data separate, you can create separate user accounts for each of you, then sign into your individual iCloud account within your user account.
If you want to just add both iCloud calendars on your Mac, you can sign into one iCloud account in System Preferences>iCloud, then add the second account in System Preferences>Internet Accounts>iCloud and only check Calendars with this second account.

  • Please could somebody help me I have an iMac which came with Tiger 10.4.10 installed I have lost my disks and I need to re-install after a hard drive failure. Where can I find this? I will upgrade to Snow Leopard after but I cannot go straight to SL

Please could somebody help me I have an iMac which came with Tiger 10.4.10 installed I have lost my disks and I need to re-install after a hard drive failure. Where can I find this? I will upgrade to Snow Leopard after but I cannot go straight to SL

You can go strait to SL, all you need is a retail SL DVD available from Apple for $20. The US online store has them at:

  • HT4561 I have a IMAC 7.1 with a Mac OS X v 10.5.8. Can I upgrade this machine to 10.6.8

I have a IMAC 7.1 with a Mac OS X v 10.5.8. Can I upgrade this machine to 10.6.8 or to the latest MAC OS software version?

Yes, that unit can be upgraded to the latest (Mavericks). First you will need to get to Snow Leopard (10.6). Check the link below for details.

Once you are at 10.6.8 Lion is still available from Apple. You will have to call Apple Customer Care 1-800-692-7753 or 1-800-676-2775. to purchase it. Then within 3 days you will get an email with a code which you can use to download Lion from the App Store.  The price is $19.99.
Lion will require at least 2gb of RAM but really needs 4gb to run smoothly.
As for third party programs see this list for compatibility with 10.7 http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
Also Lion doesn't run any Power PC programs. To see if you have any Power PC programs go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up select Applications under Software. Then look under Kind to see if any of your applications are listed as Power PC. Universal and Intel will run under Lion.
Before Mac switched to Intel processors in 2006 they used Power PC processors from 1994 to 2005. Power PC 601 through 604, G3, G4 and G5. Applications written for the Power PC processors need the application called Rosetta to run on Intel processors. This was part of the Operating System in 10.4 and 10.5 but was an optional install in 10.6. With 10.7 Lion Apple dropped all support for Power PC applications.

If you are sure there is nothing in it, download trashit, a useful free app.   That will dispose of it.

I cannot answer regarding compatibility, but there is no download available for PSE6 if you would need one for this.  You might be able to copy the installation files from a disk to some other removable media that the machine accepts.  Upgrading to PSE7 would not be possible mainly because Adobe does not sell older versions of their software.

  • I have an imac 21.5" running Mavericks. I'm trying toConverting vinyl to turntable connected to a SonyDVMC-DA2 media converter which id connected to a Thunderbolt port via firewire adapter. No luck converting. Help!

I have an imac 21.5' running mavericks. Converting vinyl to digital. My turntable connects to a Sony DVMC-DA2 media converter which connects to the imac with a thunderbolt firewire adapter. When I try to import media I get a faint music sound but no files download. Help!

The DVCM-DA2 does not have a phono input, so is unable to work from a turntable (not enough gain, and no RIAA equalization, both of which are required for Vinyl)
You will need a converter that has a phono input (to the RIAA standard)
