I have an 802.11n router, but MacBook Pro Link Speed shows 54mbps...

…any idea how I get to to connect at N speeds?
I know some old Macs had to buy an "N Enabler" app from Apple, but I didn't think my Mid-2010 i5 17" MBP needed it.
The router is a Netgear DGN3500 and is set to "Up to 270Mbps" (the other options are "Up to 130Mbps", "g only" or "b/g".
Thanks

Ok, I realised my router was set to WPA security.
I then read the following in the router's setup page:
"WPA-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-Shared Key ) - use WPA-PSK standard encryption. This option is only available for the g & b wireless mode.
WPA2-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-Shared Key ) - use WPA2-PSK standard encryption. This option is only available for the g & b wireless mode.
WPA-PSK + WPA2-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-Shared Key ) - use both WPA-PSK and WPA2-PSK standard encryption. A high performance client like the NETGEAR WN511B must connect using WPA2-PSK in order to achieve maximum performance. Wireless clients that connect to this router using WPA-PSK will run at no more than 802.11g speed."
I took that to mean that in WPA mode, you can't get faster than 802.11g. But in WPA2 mode, you can get to 802.11n.
I switched to WPA2, and low and behold, the PHY Mode is now "802.11n" and my Link Speed is 144Mbps. Still nowhere near 270mbps, mind you!

  • 802.11n Enabler for MacBook Pro not included

Apple's page about the Airport Extreme Base Station says, "Most new Mac computers ship with built-in 802.11n wireless support that can be easily enabled with the installation of enabler software included with new AirPort Extreme wireless base station (see sidebar)."
Yesterday I purchased the Airport Extreme 802.11n WiFi Wireless Base Station (Model MB053ZA/A A1143). I have installed it OK and it is running fine. But I now want to "enable" 802.11n on my MacBook Pro but can not figure out how to do it.
I have searched everywhere through the box and looked everywhere on the one install disk (disk version 2.1 2Z681-6107-A) but I can not find anything that looks like enabler software for the WiFi network card in my MacBook Pro 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo. The en1 page in Network Utility shows Model: Wireless Network Adapter (802.11 a/b/g).
How is the enabler normally shipped in the AirPort Extreme wireless base station package? On a separate disk? On the install disk? As a free download?

There were several MacBook Pro models with 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo processors. Your computer must be have a Core 2 Duo processor to qualify for the enabler.

There is only a single installation disk that is provided with the base station. The enabler software is located within the AirPort.mpkg package. There is a download, but it is not free. (ref: AirPort Extreme 802.11n Enabler for Mac)

  • 802.11n Broke My MacBook Pro

Since I installed the 802.11n enabler software yesterday, my mac has hung up on my about a dozen times, and the problem is getting worse. I can no longer use my MBP if my airport is turned on.
This has happened while being connected to the Airport Express, as well as while being connected to a new Linksys 802.11n router and and old Netgear 802.11b router. It works fine for a few minutes, and then Internet dies, followed by application hangs, and then, the whole computer hangs.
I have tried putting it in sleep with no luck (it's won't sleep). I tried to open the Activity Monitor, and it won't open. In the end, I have to do a hard reboot.
Has anyone else had this problem? I would love to find a fix, but if none is available, at least some information on how to remove the enabler package?

  • 802.11n Can't get 270mbps link speed on Macbook

    Hi,
I have a Netgear DGN2000 802.11b/g/n Modem/Router and I have tried, and failed, to get my Macbook to sync at 270mbps. I have set the router to this speed in the setup page, but the network utility has me consistently connected at 130mbps. Is there something I need to enable? Or could the problem lie with the router. I have no other draft n spec machine to test on. Is there anyway other than network utility to see what the router is outputting?
    Thank in advance

130 mbps is still faster than 802.11g. I suspect the problem is with your router's implementation of 802.11n. It is still a draft standard. Also if your connection is in any way open, it will slow down with each additional machine on the network. Check your router's firmware, and check what happens if only one machine is on the wireless network.
Network Utility reports 130 mbit/sec, and that's just the theoretical limit. I don't believe that's necessarily any measure rate. I think what some people are upset is that it doesn't *report* the full 300 mbit/sec for "link speed" like you see on the 802.11n enabler page:
    http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/d4141airportenablerLM.png
In any case, there's no way that it would be able to stress out a residential internet connection, although some people probably do home networking (I don't).

  • No 802.11n support in macbook pro leopard install

I upgraded my MacBook Pro to Leopard last week (and then updated to 1.5.1 yesterday)
Other users here have claimed that they see 802.11n support in the Network utility (choosing en1 as the Network Interface). However, I do not. I only see a/b/g.
I also went ahead and purchased the 802.11n enabler (for $2.16). I got an error message that the software is incompatible with my hardware. My guess is that the enabler is probably incompatible with Leopard - although the Apple Store says nothing about this.
Why did others get 802.11n installed automatically via their Leopard upgrade but in my case it did not?
How do I upgrade my MacBook Pro (10.5.1) to 802.11n?
    Thanks,
    Bill

I just realized that I don't have the right mbpro for 802.11n as I don't have core 2 duo.
***** to be me I guess.
I'll look for an after market solution to upgrade to 802.11n.
    Thanks.

Worked fine last week, but over weekend just started having issues.

It is very possible that you may have some form of Wi-Fi interference that has appeared recently that is preventing your Time Capsule (TC) from providing a clean RF signal.
I suggest you perform a simple site survey, using utilities like iStumbler, or AirRadar to determine potential areas of interference, and then, try to either eliminate or significantly reduce them where possible. Look for other Wi-Fis that may be operating nearby. Note those with the strongest signals and which channels they are operating on ... then change the channel used by the TC to be at least 3-5 channels away.

  • HT4259 I have an 802.11n base and extender and still cannot get a good signal 80-90 ft away . Why?

I have an 802.11n base and extender and still cannot get a good signal 80-90 ft away . Why?

Hardwire is always recommended because there is virtually no signal loss in a wire....at least up to 300 feet or so.
Another advantage of using Ethernet cable...if you can...is that you can locate the AirPort Express where it is most needed.
If it extends using wireless only, it pretty much needs to be located about half the distance from the main router and the general area that needs more coverage.
I like to use WiFi Explorer since it displays SNR (Signal to Noise) readings, which are the best way to evaluate signal quality.
Mac App Store - WiFi Explorer
If the signal is varying constantly, something is causing it to do so....assuming that the AirPorts are functioning correctly.
Cordless phones are a huge problem for wireless networks.  You want to try to figure out if the phones are causing a problem as a first troubleshooting step.
That is why I suggested that you turn off the phones for an hour or two and watch the network to see how it behaves.  If the signal stops fluctuating....that is a good clue that the phones are interfering with the wireless signal.

The seller should have given you the original disk so that you can reinstall as needed. But it likely was a single-user license (which really means single computer) so you can only have a copy on one computer at a time. If the seller didn't give you the disk he is probably still using the software on his new Mac. Your best option to get any of the iWork apps to use in OS X 10.6.6 or later is through the Mac App Store. You can then install them on any Mac you have that has access to the Mac App Store using your Apple ID.

Well, you could install the drivers to the wireless printer in you other computers.

No, you should not.  There are problems trying to go the other way, but updating a newer iOS release from a backup of an older iOS release has always been supported and is the basic means of setting up a new device from a previous one.

It would be easier to just fix whatever is making your machine slow.

    Hello chrispyw,
If your content is still being displayed incorrectly, I would check the resolution setting for the built in display with this article:
OS X Yosemite: Adjust your display’s resolution
If it keeps happening whenever you use AirPlay then I would use this section of the following article to reset the display system:
Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays
    Reset the system
You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.Reset the resolution
Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • TS3276 I have installed OS X Mavericks on macbook pro, macbook air & iMac but I am having terrible trouble with apple Mail. I need to take all accounts online frequently OR worse I have to quit mail and restart computer. Is anyone else having problems?

I have installed OS X Mavericks on macbook pro, macbook air & iMac but I am having terrible trouble with apple Mail. I need to take all accounts online frequently OR worse I have to quit mail and restart computer. Is anyone else having problems?

I just checked to see if the update to OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 solved any of the issues outlined in my previous post, and to my dismay, nothing has changed -- all of the previous problems persist.
My iMac (8) -- it's renamed itself eight times since the recent troubleshoot with the Apple tech rep -- shows up as a shared device in Finder on my MacBook Pro, but when I click on it, I cannot establish a connection using "Connect As".  So I've attempted to connect using the menu "Go/Connect to Server...", using both (alternately) the iMac's name and IP address, to no avail.  I get a message which reads: "There was a problem connecting to the server 'Peter's iMac (8)'. This server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time.  Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again."
    Here's what I know:
    The server -- Peter's iMac (8) does exist;
    The server -- Peter's iMac (8) is available at this time;
    The server name -- Peter's iMac (8) -- is correct, as specified in the system sharing preferences;
    The server IP address is correct, as specified in the system sharing preferences;
The network connection is active when I attempt to connect.
I'm convinced the problems stem directly from the OS X Yosemite update.  None of this was ever remotely an issue in the previous OS X's -- any of them.  This is maddening!  What can be done?  Apple?? Anyone???

Actually you need to quit Safari which is different from closing.  With Safari open go the menu bar for Safari/Quit Safari.

Both work very well. The former I use for manual, one-way synchroniziation of (nearly) entire systems. The latter for automatic syncing of very active directories through local and shared online storage.
