I have finally solved my SMB sharing troubles

Hi!
I have read two most enlightening postings regarding ACLs and POSIX rights. I have always seen that they both affect access rights but have not been able to figure it out quite right. It seems very easy on first sight but it is not. Just try to edit MS Office document on a Windows PC right on the SMB share and you will see what I am talking about. But to cut the long story short, here's what I have done with my SMB configuration and why.
1) I modified /etc/smb.conf to disable streams support.
; stream support = yes
vfs objects = darwinacl
We don't need or use streams on our shares, buaving them enabled will occasionally block files from being read from the share. So in our case it is better to disable them.
2) I have removed all Deny statements from ACLs.
If you edit documents on the SMB share using MS Office, ACLs get messed up big time. The most important thing is that you don't know where you Deny ACEs will end up, so they could be the first thing in the ACL and you could be denied of any access.
3) I have set all POSIX rights to None on all directories and files.
darwinacl module will combine the POSIX rights and the ACL and will show POSIX rights as ACL entries to the Windows client. If the Windows client now saves something, the combined entries will all land in the saved file's ACL. E.g. if you have POSIX right r/w for group staff, the ACL will have an entry for group Users afterwards.
All in all I have only set ACLs to allow selective Allow rights for directories and no Deny statements at all. It works pretty well on Windows clients and also on Mac SMB clients. I have not enabled AFP at all for easier management.
The only downside is that the access-rights-limited directories are still listed for everyone who has access to the level above them.
Oh, for everyone who is interested in the two postings I read and found so good, here's the link:
http://lists.apple.com/archives/Macos-x-server/2008/May/msg00335.html
See the reply too, that's the second interesting posting.
Hopefully someone will find this information helpful! I have seen too many cries for help on this same issus.
Best regards,
Andrus Suitsu

I have experienced some new troubles with my shares. This time it is with OS X 10.6.2 smb client only. If a Windows user creates a new folder on a Leopard share, it has all the good POSIX rights and good ACL also. The POSIX owner has changed to the creator, but that should be fine. But still only the creator can access that folder over SMB from 10.6.2 client. Windows XP clients are not affected by this problem. From the Server Manager everything looks good, only the POSIX owner is different. Looking at the directory from the command-line reveals that the new folder has Execute bits set while other have not. Clearing the X bits made the problem go away.
You cannot change the share settings directly in /var/samba/shares because Leopard will overwrite your changes. So I changed the share settings using WGM (log in to Local). Clicked the last icon (2 concentric rings) and chose SharePoints. Then went and changed smb_createmask and smb_directorymask to 0000. This is okay, because I use only ACL to grant access to whoever needs it.
I then ran the /usr/libexec/samba/synchronize-shares script to write out the files in /var/samba/shares. After restarting the SMB service, things were once more better than before I started. New folders and files are created with empty POSIX rights, which is exactly what I need.

  • Windows (SMB) Sharing Troubles, but only with Groups

I have a NFS3 share on a Linux machine that I mounted to my OSX Server. The drive is shared and the Everyone, and User privileges work, I can change them and control the access. Group privileges seem to be broken. I can verify on the Linux machine that the proper group ID has been set on the files, but my WindowsXP machine's don't think they are part of the group I guess.
How can I start to debug this?
My OSX Server is running 10.4.8, and is a Samba PDC using Open Directory.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

In order to get this problem fixed you need to have "Enable Access Control List on this volume" (ACL) checked in the "Workgroup Manager".
POSIX only seem to support "Everybody" and "Users" access. While the Group data is intact, Windows XP doesn't respect it. With ACL on the groups magically work.
I have started another thread here to cover the NFS issue.

I have Final Cut Pro X (10.0.9) and would like to change my project settings but I am having trouble finding the 'Modify Settings button.'  Where exactly is it located?  Here is the link which gives the instructions but doesn't seem to say where the 'Modify Settings Button' is located: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12526?viewlocale=en_US

You have to choose – one settigf or another.
The thing is.your HD clips will look better in an SD project than your SD clips will in an HD project.
WIthout knowing much more about your project and the kind of content, it's really hard to be specific. But generally I'd let my project settings be guided by what fraction of my timeline will be made up of HD clips and how much SD clips. If it's 75% HD, I'd probably do an HD project…and so on,
    Good luck.

  • No thumbnails/preview in Nautilus for files in a smb shared folder.

    Hi,
This is a problem I have tried to solve for more than a year by posting in forums, trial and error and a lot of Google searches. For my work I have to look through large folders on a smb share with movie files. I need thumbnails/preview to be able to work efficiently. On Ubuntu and other deb based distros I have thumbnails/preview in Nautilus just by setting it in the Naurilus preferences for networked folders. Not so on Arch (and Antergos). I do have thumbnails/preview for local files, but regardless of what I do not for the smb shared folders. I have of course configured Nautilus to preview all files.
I can see that there are generated failed thumbnails in ~/.cache/thumbnails/fail/gnome-thumbnail-factory, so for some reason they are not generated correctly for the movie files in the smb shared folder on Arch. I have tried to install ffmpegthumbnailer and tons of other methods I have found in the forums and elsewhere, but I have not been able to get it to work. And again, on Ubuntu it works out of the box so it's not like there's a bug in Nautilus preventing thumbnails for files on a network share.
I'm running GNOME as my DE, but it doesn't seem to matter which DE I run as long as Nautilus or Nemo is the file manager.
I do not expect a solution, but one can always hope!

I had a similar issue, and it turns out nautilus was using ffmpegthumbnailer instead of totem-video-thumbnailer.
And ffmpegthumbnailer doesn't seem to work with files on "smb://...". It was generating empty pngs.
Do you have totem installed et does this create an image ?
    totem-video-thumbnailer "smb://videoserver/pathtovideofile/videofile" test.png
Did you try to uninstall ffmpegthumbnailer or video thumbnailers other than totem ?

  • OSX 10.8 smb sharing

Hi, I have a big problem with smb sharing. Before I installes the OS X Mountain Lion I could connect to my Windows 7 computer to watch videos via smb (as Guest), but after the update I can not connect anymore. I did not change anything in computers and this happened. Has anybody else this problem? How to solve it?
    Thank you
    Larerin
P.S.: Why in system preferences->Sharing is not (when smb is enabled) that I should use smb://ipaddress but only \\ipaddress? Is not smb sharing broken?

If the Guest account is not enabled in Windows then you would not have been able to connect using the Guest account previously.
If you do use the Guest account from the Mac, is this the sort of message you get?
Also, if you do use the first name / password combination to authenticate, does the authenitcation box shudder when you press Connect or do you get some other message?

  • SMB Sharing User?

    Hello,
Since a good long while i've been working with a Macbook. Being a long term windows user i gradually took the opportunity to study on more OS's than just Windows. However, one of the few things i still havn't figured out is the SMB Sharing capability.
Let me sketch you an environment.
Leopard 10.5.5 (And somewhat below) Allows you to share folders, much like windows with policies on what a user can do in a folder et cetera.
When sharing a folder with Leopard, you go to File Sharing, toggle SMB on, and define an account you want people to use to get into the shared folder. Here, exactly lies my problem. With a guest account i am perfectly able to see the folder on a Windows computer.
Once i define a user account, let's take "Test" as a subtle one for now. The password would be easily set to "test" aswell. In the User Management interface i've defined a sharing account under the name Test.
This account will now show up at the File Sharing preference pane. I can select it, and attach permissions to it, such as "Test" may write in folder "X" but, "Everyone (also known as Guest, i suppose?)" May not see anything at all.
Once i did this, i am unable to at all get connection to the shared folder through Windows, but when i toggle "Everyone" to Read or Read/Write, i can see the folders perfectly clear once again.
My question is, How so i solve this problem. So that only an account "I" Define, may have access to the shared folder with the credentials "I" once again define?
Thanks in advance, and i hope to see your responses soon.
    Rene

Can't solve your problem as we are in the middle of setting up a mac mini snow leopard server with a couple of macs (absolutely fine!) and a couple of PC's both running XP. One will connect but one won't. How do you connect/have your's set up to connect. The problem PC will see the share point in workgroups and allow to enter username and password, but won't mount the volume. so annoying!

  • Desperately need help with a networked printer and SMB sharing for windows

Complete xServ newbie here. I'm a windows/novell admin, with limited experience in Unix and Linux.
Against my advice, a client of mine that owns a small office of 20 people bought an XServG5 to act as a server for 20 mixed Windows PCs. File sharing services are working fine. I've created the users, set up groups and rights - that's all good.
I cannot get an SMB shared printer to work from the windows machines. They run through the network printer install just fine, it shows up online, etc. However, when print jobs are submitted they DO show up in the printer queue on the server, sit there for a while, and then get moved to the completed box.
They never print. There's not any indication that the job is even submitted to the printer. I can print to the printer just fine from the server itself, but the windows clients don't work, but they don't return an error message.
Print services are running on the server, I've configured the printer name to be less than 12 characters for the share, and indeed it does pop right up during the "add network printer" routine.
Ideas? I'm not even sure what questions I'm supposed to be asking, such is my ignorance of the OS. I do know that I followed the documentation to a T, and according to Apple this should work.
Thanks in advance for the help. I'm extremely frustrated.

We have the same problem. Our printer worked for about 2 years but failed similar to yours after a system update.
Can you go into the Windows service, Logs, Printer Service. Copy and paste the log here. What I am looking for is a line like lpr: CANNOTCONNECTCLIENT or something similar to this.
What I expect is that you have a problem where the cups defined printer is not usable. We can't get our problem fixed either - but am just curious if you have the same thing. We reloaded our server, applied all of the update and still cannot get it to work.
Again, I think it stems from the update.

  • Why did I have to enable Windows File Sharing to share files between two Mavericks iMacs?

File Sharing failed between my Mavericks iMacs.  The console logs showed that the target iMac saw the ntlmv2 protocol as unknown to the kdc.  I fixed it by enabling Windows File Sharing on the target Mavericks iMac.  I had tried disabling SMB on both iMacs and leaving AFP on, but then nothing happened when I tried to connect.  Why did I have to enable Windows File Sharing to share files between two Mavericks iMacs?

When you enable file sharing you need to have either SMB (Windows) or AFP (historically Apple-native) file sharing checked. The default in Mavericks is SMB, and not AFP.
If you uncheck both, then the system will turn off file sharing. Apple supports the use of both SMB and AFP connections in Mavericks, so with only AFP enabled you should have been able to establish a connection, but there could be a small bug or configuration-specific snafu that you're encountering.
With AFP enabled only, try pressing Command-K in the Finder to open the Connect To Server dialogue, and in here enter the address to the system using afp:// as the protocol, such as the following (the name can be looked up in the Sharing system preferences):
    afp://my_imac.local

  • SMB Sharing

When I enable SMB sharing on Leopard so that I can access my mac files from Vista, my Vista computer can see everything on my mac hard drive...I mean everything! I have tried limiting which files/folders to share on my mac, but it has no effect. Is anyone else experiencing this phenomenon? It is actually really scary!

I'm having the same problem. Tried everything from messing with the /etc/smb.conf file with any relevant settings. It calls another config file from /var/run/smb.conf but if you manually edit that with emacs or any text editor and re-start the SMB sharing service, it will overwrite any changes to the defaults and continue to show the shares.
On a second note, I noticed that when I plugged in my external drives (2 of them for backups) after a minute or so, even though they are not in the list of shares from the "System Preferences" menu, the two drives automagically showed up as shares where the Vista computer could see them and all their contents. This is not good because once they are shared, I cannot eject them any longer as they become locked. The biggest issue after this point (not withstanding the security issue of having all the root level data exposed) is that Carbon Copy Cloner can no longer access the backup drive as it says it is in use.
I'm pulling my hair out right now and 4 hours Googling an answer and searching in the Apple forums has left me right back where I started, still with no answer.

  • [Mac OS 10.7]SMB sharing issue with IPv6

    Hi, Folks,
I knew there are some big changes about SMB server and clients, the SMB sharing on IPv4 can work fine for me too. But the SMB sharing on IPv6 cannot work fine.
After checking the TCP ports with IPv4, the port 139 is closed, and I only can telnet with port 445. For IPv6, both port 139 and 445 are all closed.
Could you give more detail information about it? Or any solution to fix it?
    Thanks & Best Regards!

  • Smb sharing packed up on 10.6.2?

    Hi all,
So we recently deployed a shining new 10.6.2 mac mini OS X server, to replace our ruddy 10.3 server box, and after the initial upgrade, everything has been up and running perfectly.
Suddenly, and for no reason, it appears as though SMB sharing has stopped working. Although our network consists of 99% apple clients, we still require SMB file sharing because we have one or two indespensable windows machines on the network.
So again, suddenly no clients can connect to the server via SMB. Not just windows machines - OS X clients also cannot resolve a 'connect to smb://aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd' request.
We've tried restarting the SMB server many times through Server Admin. Looking at the logs provided some interesting information, and this is listed below.
Again I'm not sure why this started happening. I should point out that when the problem started happening, i ran Disk Utility and it did find a hefty number of incorrect permissions. This has been rectified (through the usual repeated runs of 'repair disk permissions'... although the SMB problem persists.
Just to be sure there's no odd file system errors, I'm thinking about:
1)making a disk image of the entire drive,
    2)backing the thing up
3)booting to another mac whilst connected in target disk mode
4)deleting the partitions and restoring the image.
but obviously, it sounds like a good amount of work. Any other way to get samba happening again? Again, see log below.
    Thank you!

  • Cannot setup SMB sharing on Yosemite

I just did a clean install of Yosemite and am slowly recreating my previous setup. However I cannot get SMB sharing to work.
I turned File Sharing on, my Macbook drive is listed under shared folders then I go into Options and enable SMB. BUT in the section of this window called Windows File Sharing where I am supposed to select the account to be used for sharing (and then enter my password) my account is listed but greyed out and cannot be edited.
I booted back into my backup from before I reinstalled and the setup looks identical except the section is editable.
See screenshot (I have blanked out my account name but it is there). But see I cant click the On button - the whole section is greyed:
Is there something else I need to do to enable this section? Or is it a Yosemite issue?

    Hi !
I had the same problem, and I fixed by changing the way the password works in Yosemite:
When I updated to Yosemite, I configured the appleID user and password. It seems Windows share is not working fine with this. Then I changed to "separate password" in "System Preferences"->"Users & Groups"->"Change Password". Once I change that, it worked.
I hope this works for you.

  • I have been having a lot of trouble with the latest itunes update and my ipod classic 80Gb i.e. being unable to sync songs, but now i have no files at all on my ipod, it is completely blank when i view it from my computer. I need help, please, anybody.

As it says above, i have been having a lot f trouble with my ipod classic and the latest itunes update, i was unable to sync songs or anything to it and have tried every conceivable 'fix' i could find. i have run an itunes diagnostic and the results are posted below. a major problem is that when i try and view my ipod through my computer it displays nothing at all on the ipod, no files or anything, this may be the problem but i have no idea how it has happened or how i could resolve it.
This ipod holds huge sentimental value and i am loathe to buy a new one! If anybody can help it is greatly appreciated, than kyou in advanced.

Same here.... No fix. Replacing is the option apparently and if you're out of warranty, you're SOL. That was as per the "Genius" at Apple.
