I have installed snow leopard 10.6.8 on my macbook, i got a problem that every time i want to save or put something on desktop it, says you dont have permisson why is this, also my dock want stay the same everytime i start up it defaults back?

i have installed snow leopard 10.6.3 on to my macbook which was currently 10.4.11, i wanted to do this so i can run Final Cut Pro 10 which needs 10.6.8 or higher. so i updated the snow leopard to 10.6.8 installed final cut pro ok. the problem i got is else where i cant save on put anything on desktop, it says i dont have permisson, and when i try and click on my documents same again. also i adjusted my dock to smaller added a few applications onto it, but every time i restart the laptop it defaults back why is this?!! so annoying. i had a look at my disk utilites and i have still got 10.4.11 on my Macintosh i can switch too? i installed the snow leopard 10.6.3 on my Data Disk. can anyone help me out why i am getting these problems and what i need to do to solve it?

Snow Leopard is currently running on this MBP 15", late 2011 model, due to my need to run an old version of FileMaker.
A retail disk with 10.6.3 did not work, I restored my previous Snow Leopard install with Disk Utility.
However, it is not the shipped software and is not officially supported on this Mac. Therefore, your advice to troubleshoot Lion is the best option.

How to Install OS X Updates Successfully
A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your current OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4. Check the box labeled Erase destination.
5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the
      Destination entry field.
6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the
      Source entry field.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal
startup drive.
C. Important: Please read before installing:
1. If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the
      update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it.
      Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've
      restarted.
2. You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system
       software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through
       other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
3. The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other
      interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below)
      from Apple Downloads to update. While the installation is in progress do not use
      the computer.
D. To upgrade:
Purchase the Snow Leopard Retail DVD.
Boot From The OS X Installer Disc:
      1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
      2. Restart the computer.
      3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
      4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple
          logo appears.
      5. Wait for installer to finish loading.
      6. Follow instructions.
E. If updating:
1. Download and install update(s)
2. Use Software Update, or

iLife '09 is not available as a download - it is only available as a purchase
iLife '11 is available as a DVD purchase and the compoments of it are available from the App Store (iPhoto '11 (version 9.1.5), etc)
Exactly what did you do? And exactly what does the error message say?
On the surface it appears that you are attemptying to open a new library with an older version (iPhoto '09 can not open an iPhoto '11 library for example)

It sounds like your Snow Leopard install disk is the disk that came with another model of Mac (grey lable with no pictures). If so, that's not legal and won't work. You need a retail (white label with the picture of a snow leopard) copy of the installer for each system that didn't come with Snow Leopard.

Cannot install Snow Leopard on a new HD in MacBook

I have an older white MacBook that I want to install Snow Leopard onto again. I swapped the existing harddrive back to the original one I received from Apple when the MacBook was purchased. Before putting the hd into the MacBook I made sure to partition and format with Mac Journaled.
During startup I put the Snow Leopard disc and press C to boot from disc. Slowly but eventually, the Snow Leopard process begins. My MacBook cannot seem to detect the HD that is in the machine... When I run Disk Utility, it does not populate but the DVD drive with the Snow Leopard disc is found.
Any suggestions?

What you are saying boils down to the MacBook is not recognizing the HD now installed in it. (Regardless of the formatting, Disk Utility should at least list the drive if it is communicating with the MB's hardware.)
Open the MB & make sure the HD is installed correctly, if necessary by removing it & reseating it, making sure connectors are fully mated, nothing is interfering with its fit into the space for it, etc. Close everything up & restart it, listening for any sounds that indicate the HD is spinning up. If not, it may have been damaged. You can also run the Apple Hardware Test from your original grey system disc set (see the label of the disc for instructions about how to do that if necessary) & see if it detects any hardware problems. If so, make a note of the error code & report that.

I have a brand new top-of-the-line MacBook Pro (shipped with 10.7.2) and for some reason it won´t even start from a 10.6.8 DVD
I was thinkin´ go scratch the 750 GB HDD at one of my other Macs, but for some reason I´m afraid that Apple now have bugged the HW so it won´t be able to install 10.6.8 no matter how sofisticated changes are made??
Anyone knows or have any experience??

Install Snow Leopard on new partition (on new MacBook Pro)

I need to install OS X 10.6 on my new MacBook (10.8.2) because older programs won't work on my new machines.
I've successfully created a new partition. However when I hold down option button on startup I only see original partition and Recovery-10.8.2 but not the new partition. How on earth does one install an older version of OS X on a new machine. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

1. It does. The newer Mac OS X versions contain the drivers for older supported machines. The older OSes don't contain the drivers for newer computers, as those didn't exist when the older OS came out.

This issue can be caused by the Babylon Toolbar 1.1.8 extension
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Help please! I have just installed Snow Leopard and now I can't access my gmail account. I can complete the sign in boxes ok but the blue indicator bar freezes and prevents access to my emails.

I have just installed Snow Leopard, (10.6.3) onto my Macbook Pro and so far it seems to be working fine except that I can't access my gmail account. I can sign in but the blue opening indicator freezes near the end and I can get no further. I'm a bit of a novice at this stuff - help please!

I would run the combo update to get to 10.6.8 in order to get the latest security updates and so forth. Then run Software Update until you system is current.

Installing Snow Leopard on 10.5.8 macbook.

I was trying to install snow leopard on 10.5.8 white macbook. It would not let me.
I found a thread that said boot from disc - partition drive setting aside 5GB to install snow leopard- and it will work to install to the other ~75GB, or whatever. I've since lost thread.
Disc Boot would still not install Snow Leopard.
Somehow i'm at Restore Your System with no time machine attached though. My OSX has been erased when i partitioned drive. Now I have no where to go. I can't eject disc.
I'm at the starfield. My top menu has

-File
-Edit
-Utilities
-Window

What exactly do you want? Is it to upgrade Leopard or do you want to make a separate Snow Leopard partition?
Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the left mouse button until the disc ejects.
2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
4. Press COMMAND-E.
5. If none of the above work try this:
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
/usr/bin/drutil eject.
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into single-user mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.
To resize the drive or add a new partition:
1. Open Disk Utility and select the drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list.
2. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. You should see the graphical sizing window showing the existing partitions. A portion may appear as a blue rectangle representing the used space on a partition.
3. In the lower right corner of the sizing rectangle for each partition is a resizing gadget. Select it with the mouse and move the bottom of the rectangle upwards until you have reduced the existing partition enough to create the desired new volume's size. The space below the resized partition will appear gray. Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed. +(Note: You can only make a partition smaller in order to create new free space.)+
4. Click on the [+] button below the sizing window to add a new partition in the gray space you freed up. Give the new volume a name, if you wish, then click on the Apply button. Wait until the process has completed.
You should now have a new volume on the drive.

Error message when trying to install snow leopard

I just tried to install snow leopard version 10.6 and get an error message mid installation that kicks the cd out of the drive and stalls. I can't complete the installation. I have a macbook pro 1,1 with 1.83 ghz processor with 1gb of ram and 25 gb of harddrive space left. i currently have version 10.4.11. any ideas about why this is happening or how to trouble shoot?

I suggest you backup your Tiger system, then boot from the Snow Leopard DVD, use Disk Utility to erase your hard drive, then install Snow Leopard. You can then selectively restore your files from your backup. To make this process easy be sure to create your new Snow Leopard user account with the same username that you have for your Tiger account. Any third-party software that you have you should reinstall rather than trying to copy from the Tiger backup.
