I have the sort of old macBook that is black and lately it has been taking a really long time to load things and to pull applications up? does anyone have suggestions of things i can do to see if they will work?

First try a utility like YASU or Cocktail to clean up caches and logs as well as basic disk maintenance.

My MacBook Pro has not been launching properly and in addition has suddenly gone to a blue or white screen countless times. I am preparing to take it to the apple store but first I need to back it up as I have not done so since two weeks ago. In order to make it start properly, I launched the computer in Single User Mode, then ran time machine. It has been about 15 hours and time machine still says that it is indexing the backup. How can this be fixed? Surely it shouldn't take this long. Thanks in advance.

Apple changed MobileMe to iCloud and then restricted iCloud to 10.7 users only unfortunately
If your machine is a 64 bit processor Intel Mac you can upgrade to 10.7 for $29, however a lot of your 10.5/10.6/Rosetta based software could cease to function, especially third party hardware drivers for printers, fax machines, all-in-ones, scanners etc.

Also depending how old the machine is, if it can accept 4GB of RAM (preferred), older video card, may not run 10.7 very well or stable.
My advice is to keep at 10.6.8, get a web based email service that's plaform/hardware neutral, forward your iPhone emails there. Gmail/Yahoo Mail for instance.
When your ready for new hardware and all new software, then buy a new machine.
If your going to go to 10.7 on your present hardware, I advise you clone 10.6.8 to a external drive first, that way you can c boot off the 10.6 disk erase the drive completely (necessary to remove hidden Lion Recovery Partition) and option boot off the 10.6.8 clone and reverse clone.

So i have an apple ipod touch 1st generation and it is not charging! It shows the charging sign but its taking a really long time to charge. Ive had it charging for at least 3 hours and it still says under 20% so can someone help me figure this out??

I think the easiest way to do this is to have the EyeTV app running in one user account and sent via HDMI to the TV, and use a separate user account for Screen Sharing. Both logins can be active at the same time and with Lion you can connect via screen sharing to which ever login you need.
With regards to the Mac video resolution changing, when it is not the current input on your AV receiver. This is 'normal', if the Mac sees no signal it drops down the a lower level. What you need is to buy a HDMI Detective Plus which tricks the Mac in to always seeing a signal and hence it will not drop down the resolution. See http://www.gefen.com/kvm/dproduct.jsp?prod_id=8005
The Mac mini does have an IR receiver. This can be used with the EyeTV app, iTunes, and similar. Yes I believe EyeTV would run for prolonged periods quite happily, it is has been around for a long time and had most of the rough edges polished off. However one issue you will have to deal with is that it does not automatically update its program guide data. For this you might have to write or modify an AppleScript. Elgato support or their user forums will be a lot of help.
You can set EyeTV to convert recordings to an iTunes (Apple TV) compatible format and then delete them from EyeTV.
The HDMI Detective should solve your handshaking problems. -

When I click "Try Again" the app opens normally and usually runs ok sometimes it will quit unexpectedly but when reopening at that point it opens ok. Never had this issue until about 2 weeks ago. *** When I close the program myself I get a message that says "PowerPoint-New Settings
New settings have been created for this application. Do you want to use these settings from now on? Then there are 2 buttons below the dialogue box that say "Use new settings and Use original settings" This happens every time I try to open Power Point, Excel, Safari, Entourage the first time each new day. If I have been running any of those programs and have not shut down the laptop then the program will reopen normally but may shut down unexpectedly on its own and sometimes not. What changed and how do I fix this problem? Running OS X10.4.11 and software updates are current. Ran diagnostics and checked out ok.Very Important, how much Free Space is on your Hard Drive first of all? Click on the Macintosh HD on the Desktop, then do a Get Info on it.

2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
Do they launch OK while in Safe Mode? -

Once this happens, it takes a while like it is catching up but eventually will clear the jam. It has locked up and or crashed and I manually have to reset my computer.
This can happen if you've zoomed the page. That effects the screen dimensions as reported by JavaScript and seems to confuse Yahoo.
Reset the page zoom on pages that cause problems.

As of the last week, I have not experienced the usual rapid download to signing in to Yahoo, and once there, other sites are experiencing the same lag time. I have to wait till Firefox catches up with the download speed on the web. I am NOT experiencing this with Internet Explorer. I much prefer to use Mozilla, but don't understand why this is happening. Are there any issues that are being worked on from your end? There are NO changes to my computer (Windows 7), except recent updates from Mozilla.
