Can't succesfully install Oracle Database 10g Express Edition on Ubuntu
Hi,
I've been trying to install Oracle Database 10g xe on Ubuntu 10.04 and when I execute the .deb package (oracle-xe-universal_10.2.0.1-1.0_i386.deb) I get a quick installation that doesn't ask me for any configuration settings. When the installation is finished I don't get any menu in my Applications menu named "Oracle Database 10g Express Edition" as specified in Getting Started Guide (I only get some items grouped into an category called "Other" (Backup Database, Get Started, Get Started With Oracle Database 10g Express Edition, Go To Online Forum, Read Documentation, Read Online Help, Register For Online Forum, Restore Database, Run SQL Command Line, Start Database and Stop Database). As a consequence I can't access the Oracle Database Home Page.
In addition when I click on Start Database I get the following message: "Operation failed. josep is not member of 'dba' group".
I've tried to re-download the packages and to configure it by editing /etc/init.d/oracle-xe but this doesn't solve my problem.
can you give me some help?
Thabk you in advance!Markus Waldorf wrote:

Installing Oracle Database 10g on Linux Red Hat 5.1
While inslalling Oracle Database 10g Client Release 2 (10.2.0.1.0) for Linux x86-64 on Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.1 (Tikanga) we've got an error
Checking operating system version: must be redhat-3, SuSE-9, redhat-4, UnitedLinux-1.0, asianux-1 or asianux-2
Failed <<<<
Could we install Oracle Database 10g on Linux Red Hat 5.1 or we need only Oracle Database 11g?Verify that the redhat-release RPM is installed on your Red Hat system:
rpm -q redhat-release
This RPM is important for RHEL since RHEL AS 4, RHEL AS 3, and RHEL AS 2.1 are Linux releases supported by Oracle. Without this RPM, Oracle 10g OUI won't be able to recognize it as a supported OS. However, the installer of 10g 10.1.0.3 does not recognize RHEL AS 4 as a supported release yet. This means that you will have to edit the /etc/redhat-release file. You also have to change /etc/redhat-release for unsupported releases like Fedora Core and RH9.
I do not recommend to execute "runInstaller -ignoreSysPrereqs" since this will disable other checks you probably don't want to.
On RHEL AS 4 (for 10g R1), RH9, and FC 1 you have to change the /etc/redhat-release file to make Oracle 10g believe it's running on a supported release.
Regarding RHEL AS 4, the installer for 10g 10.1.0.3 does not recognize RHEL AS 4 as a supported release but 10g R2 OUI does.
To change the /etc/redhat-release file, you can simply copy/paste the following commands:
su - root
cp /etc/redhat-release /etc/redhat-release.orig
cat > /etc/redhat-release << EOF
Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS release 3 (Taroon)
EOF
After you are done with the Oracle10g installation, undo the changes you made to /etc/redhat-release:
su - root
cp /etc/redhat-release.orig /etc/redhat-release

How to install Oracle software remotely?
Remote Software Installation Steps: (For Solaris only)
If you want to install Oracle Software remotely, you should perform the following steps. These steps are applicable only if your source and target machine are running Unix.
For example, you can install Oracle Software from your home from Washington, DC to a target source in California.
1. Pick your source server or machine for remote installation.
2. Check that your CD is in your source CD-ROM drive.
3. On the target machine, find your target machine name with the output of the /usr/bin/hostname
4. On the source machine, login as a user.
5. On the source machine, enable client access: % /usr/openwin/bin/xhost + target-machine-name
6. Become root user by typing: su (dont use -)
7. Check that Volume Manger is running. # ps ef |grep vold (if you see an entry that contains /usr/sbin/vold, Volume Manager is running. Then skip to Step 10.
8. If not then do the following: # mkdir p /cdrom/your-cd-file-name
9. # mount F hsfs r cdrom-device /cdrom/your-cd-file-name
10. Add the following line to your /etc/dfs/dfstab file: # share F nfs o ro /cdrom/your-cd-file-name
11. Verify whether your source machine is an NFS server: # ps ef | grep nfsd
12. If you see an entry that contains /use/lib/nfs/nfsd a 16, then nfsd is running and skip to Step 16.
13. If nfsd is running, then type: # /usr/sbin/shareall
14. If nfsd is not running, then start nfsd by typing: # /etc/init.d/nfs.server start
15. Verify whether your source machine is an NFS server again by typing: # ps ef | grep nfsd
16. Make sure your source machine is exporting your product directory by typing: # /usr/sbin/dfshares
17. Now, log in to the target machine by type: # rlogin target-machine-name l user (not root)
18. Then log in as the root user by typing: # su
19. Go to the source machine by typing: # cd /net/source-machine/cdrom/your-cd-file-name ,then Skip to 24.
20. If you cannot change to that directory in Step 19 and you do not have an auto-mounter on your network, then create amount point by typing the following commands.
21. # mkdir /remote_products
22. # /usr/sbin/mount F nfs r source-machine:/cdrom/your-cd-file-name /remote_products
23. # cd /remote_products
24. Redirect the target machine display to source machine by typing: # DISPLAY=source-machine:0; export DISPLAY (if you use a Bourne or Korn shell).
25. Start the Web Start Installer by typing: # ./installer (or whatever the installer name program is). -
Anyone install Oracle database 10g Release 2 on OS "Vista Home" Edition??
Dear all,
Anyone install Oracle database 10g Release 2 on OS "Vista Home" Edition??
Best Regards,
AmyI think that all that Hans and Werner are saying is that since Oracle is not supported on Windows Home anything, if you have any problems with it, blame Windows and not Oracle. I would also guess that most people who are serious about learning Oracle (which you probably are since no business would install Oracle on Windows Vista Home), would install it on a supported platform such as the Windows Server Editions, XP Pro or Linux.
One possible alternative to what you are asking about is to install a virtual machine on your Windows Home Premium, install Linux as the guest OS in your virtual machine and then install Oracle on the Linux OS. The good thing about this type of installation vs. a dual-boot-with-Linux installation is you don't have to worry about possibly ruining your Windows installation if something goes wrong setting up the dual boot.

The complete installation installation guide is included with the installation software. It is also part of the exhaustively complete documentation set for every oracle product found at tahiti.oracle.com. Go there, select your product and version. When you arrive at the page for your specific product version, somewhere on that page (location varies between versions) you will find a link to the installation guide.
Also please note that there are several versions of Vista, and the Oracle db is not certified for all of them, but only for specific versions. -
Do i need IP address to install Oracle Database 10g
Dear all,
i want to test some thing with oracle database 10g release 2 at my home
but there i do not have a network card
so i will not be able to obtain an ip address, so can i install it without the need of the ip address?
Best Regards,

i install it without the need of the ip address?IP address is needed to install oracle database. But you don't have network card so you can use 127.0.0.1 , that is by default IP address for local host. Make sure you have made in hosts file ( /etc/hosts in Linux and C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc in windows ).
example
127.0.0.1 localhost <your hostname>
In windows you need to install a Loopback Adapter

Hello,
the install cannot proceed as service OracleServiseXE is present on the systemOracle 10g XE can be installed just once.
If you have already tried to install it before, you should uninstall completely 10g XE and, clean the Registry if not yet done
from any 10g XE entry.
Then, you could install it. On Windows XP it works.
Hope this help.
