I keep seeing ads for MacKeeper to 'clean' you Mac.

Has anyone downloaded this? Is it safe? Does it work?

From the review:
Some tools make it too easy to disrupt important OS X components. The uninstaller offered only a basic warning (and, happily, asked for our administrator password) when deleting hard-to-replace utilities like Keychain Access. But it also only partially deleted our Adobe apps.
And several MacKeeper tools duplicate existing OS X features—like backup, file searching, even choosing login items—while falling far short of Apple’s ease of use. Despite extensive customer-service options, MacKeeper probably isn’t something to install for Grandma to run on her iMac between your visits.
Some features offer inconsistent results. Easy to trash key files. Middling documentation. No disk repair tool.
IMO it is, and remains, worthless over-priced crap that WILL disrupt your system.

It's unnecessary - ignore those & similar ads. Consider using an adblocker extension like
    http://safariadblock.com/ which is easily stopped/removed.

You may have installed the "VSearch" trojan. Remove it as follows.
Malware is always changing to get around the defenses against it. These instructions are valid as of now, as far as I know. They won't necessarily be valid in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for more recent discussions or start a new one.
Back up all data before proceeding.
    Step 1
From the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Extensions
Uninstall any extensions you don't know you need, including any that have the word "Spigot," "Trovi," or "Conduit" in the description. If in doubt, uninstall all extensions. Do the equivalent for the Firefox and Chrome browsers, if you use either of those.
Reset the home page and default search engine in all the browsers, if it was changed.
    Step 2
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/LaunchAgents/com.vsearch.agent.plist
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item named "com.vsearch.agent.plist" selected. Drag the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password.
Repeat with each of these lines:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.daemon.plist
    /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.vsearch.helper.plist
Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Then delete the following items in the same way:
    /Library/Application Support/VSearch
    /System/Library/Frameworks/VSearch.framework
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ConduitNPAPIPlugin.plugin
Some of these items may be absent, in which case you'll get a message that the file can't be found. Skip that item and go on to the next one.
The problem may have started when you downloaded and ran an application called "MPlayerX." That's the name of a legitimate free movie player, but the name is also used fraudulently to distribute VSearch. If there is an item with that name in the Applications folder, delete it, and if you wish, replace it with the genuine article from mplayerx.org.
This trojan is often found on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content such as movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow.
You may be wondering why you didn't get a warning from Gatekeeper about installing software from an unknown developer, as you should have. The reason is that the Internet criminal behind VSearch has a codesigning certificate issued by Apple, which causes Gatekeeper to give the installer a pass. Apple could revoke the certificate, but as of this writing has not done so, even though it's aware of the problem. This failure of oversight has compromised both Gatekeeper and the Developer ID program. You can't rely on Gatekeeper alone to protect you from harmful software.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Having trouble with pop-up windows and ads for MacKeeper

I've been having trouble with pop-up windows and ads for MacKeeper and similar "services." Tried to download "MPlayerX" a week ago and it all started then. I thought I deleted the file but I'm still having trouble. I've been digging for solutions on here, but nothing I've found on here has worked yet--the VSearch stuff (I think) isn't on my hard drive. Any advice?

You installed a variant of the "VSearch" trojan. Remove it as follows.

In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. • Mackeeper 05 -Clean My Mac

Before continuing with safari, my mac wants me to Use Mackeeper 05 to clean my mac, improve security, and get a 100% performance boost.  Is this a scam?

    MacKeeper review:
acKeeper is a strange piece of software. There may be no other app as controversial in the Apple world. The application, which performs various janitorial duties on your hard drive, is loathed by a large segment of the Mac community. Check out any blog, site or forum that mentions it, and you’ll find hundreds of furious comments condemning MacKeeper and Zeobit, the company behind it. We discovered this ourselves earlier this month, when we offered a 50%-off deal on MacKeeper. Look at all those furious comments on the post.
The complaints about MacKeeper are all over the shop: It’s a virus. It holds your machine hostage until you pay up. It can’t be completely removed if you decide to delete it. Instead of speeding up your computer, it slows it down. It erases your hard drive, deletes photos, and disappears documents. There are protests about MacKeeper’s annual subscription fees. Zeobit is slammed for seedy marketing tactics. It runs pop-under ads, plants sock-puppet reviews and encourages sleazy affiliate sites, critics say.

  • I donated, but keep seeing requests for donations - could you find a way for me to check and see when I last donated?

I am glad to donate, but every time I see another request to donate, I feel like I need to do so again - my stuff! It would be helpful if it were possible to find out when I donated last, so I won't feel so guilty. Is that too difficult to accomplish?

Mozilla doesn't track contributors, or when contributors make a donation. The current campaign is 2014 E-O-Y, so if fund raising goals have been met, the requests for donations should end by the next weekend.

It's not really malware but it is extremely poorly written software.  It has a fairly good user interface and is easy to use but, when the virus protection kicks in, it hogs all of the CPU resources and everything else slows to a crawl.  Consider thirty seconds merely to open a large folder.  I had it for several weeks and trashed it.  Also, trashing it is easy.  The old "drag to trash can" works just fine.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
    It's not legit > https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3691
Don't install that application. We have seen cases where MacKeeper damaged Mac OS X and deleted important data. Also, Mac OS X doesn't need this type of apps.
Try to remove cookies from your Mac. Open Safari, go to Safari menu (on the menu bar) > Preferences > Privacy, and select the option to delete all websites data

  • I keep seeing the same ads over and over, even on the Google home page when I open Safari. It's not an inappropriate ad, it looks like it's for website design but I keep seeing it on sites I never see ads on, such as Apple's website. Do I have malware?

I'm just wondering if I have a malware or adware problem. I've ran scans using iAntivirus and Clamxav but they both indicate there's no issues. I'm currently having to start up in safe mode so I won't see the ads. Any ideas?

  • I cannot sync my Iphone 6 . I keep getting a message that says "1 Item failed to sync. Please see ITunes for more info"

I recently got an IPhone 6+ a few weeks ago. The 128 GB version. So far, I've loved it. I love the screen size, I love being able to put as much music and movies on it as I can. At least theoretically.
For whatever reason, I cannot sync and put music and movies on my phone. No matter what I do, what settings I change, or how many times I Google it, I keep getting a message that says
"1(Or just) Items failed to sync. Please see Itunes for more information"
Every time I try to sync my phone, I get this message. I have a library of 1300 songs and entire seasons of shows that play just fine through Itunes but for whatever reason will not sync to my phone. It doesn't matter if the songs were ripped or bought from Itunes, I cannot get more than a handful of songs onto my phone anymore.
Has anyone had this problem recently? Most Google searches only found information from 2011-12. And again, every "fix" I've found from Googling has not fixed this problem.
What's the point in a 128 GB Iphone if I can't put anything on it?
Thank you for your advice and direction.

    Ok....so I have found a work around....if not a complete solution.
I'm not sure if deleting your music, uninstalling ITunes and reinstalling and adding your music back will actually affect it but I tried it again. Started from scratch.
I checked the box for "Manually manage music and videos"
Then I moved my music to phone via drag and drop, usually just boxing a row of albums at a time.
I went back into my Iphone and began the sync. The message popped up, "1 Item could not be synced" and the sync stopped. At that point, I just clicked sync again and it started back up again. It took a few go's but eventually I got all my music on my phone.
Ironically enough, the only songs that wouldn't sync were songs that I had actually purchased from Itunes....kinda odd

  • HT204053 I created a new apple id because the previous one no longer exists as email (domain had to be cancelled). I keep seeing the old one pop up in my iPhone for which I don't remember the password. How can I get rid of it???

I created a new apple id because the previous one no longer exists as an email (domain had to be cancelled). I keep seeing the old one pop up in my iPhone for which I don't remember the password. How can I get rid of it??? Or how can I reset the password if the email doesn't exist??? I also tried answering a question (my date of birth) but it says it's wrong.
I'm really frustrated with the apple id!!!
    Frustrated!!!

In one of the help pages for managing your Apple ID (http://support.apple.com/kb/HE40), it shows two separate sections, one for Apple ID and one for Primary Email address. When I go to manage my Apple ID, I see only a single section for both. Can the two be 'separated', especially when you face the situation of having to discontinue your email address for some reason?
I also noticed that when navigating to Apple ID Support Communities, it shows my nickname 'dishdy'. How and when did I insert this? In the current sequence for creating an Apple ID I don't see this. In my current profile I don't see this.
In any case, I have freed myself from my previous Apple ID (@artemis.it) on my iPhone.
    Thanks for your help.
