If you have the computer to which the iPhone was last synched, you can restore the iPhone on that computer. That will remove the lock. If not, then you have absolutely no choice but to place the phone into recover mode (search Google for instructoins) and restore the phone as a NEW device.

That won't do the trick. You really need the computer. That way all your data and files can be backed up when you backup the computer.
Your only other option, which is much more limited, is using iCloud:

There is nothing you can do now that your phone is gone, other than kick yourself in the head for leaving "litterally your whole life" on a device that can easily be lost (as you've done), stolen, dropped, or damaged without any sort of backup whatsoever.
All you can do at this point is to learn a very valuable lesson about backing up your data. No one thinks losing thier phone or their hard drive crashing will happen to them--but it's not a matter of IF, it's WHEN.

If you have iCloud and turned on Find My iPhone, then you should be able to track it through iCloud.com as long as it still has access to an internet connection through cellular or Wi-Fi. If not, then check out the second article for more information.

You can restore a backup of the old device to a new one. This will erase everything on the new one before restoring, so this may be an issue if you already have data on the new device.
To do a backup of the old device, iTunes is the safest route, in my opinion. Many users have lost photos when performing a restore from an icloud backup.
An icloud backup does not include everything. For example,only photos in camera roll are backed up. Also, music is not backed up since you get it back from itunes and (for purchased music) from the itunes store.

It's not likely to re-connect to a network lying on the ground somewhere and getting rained on, it would be really great if I could see that map again so I could use it's last known location to find it. Kind of pointless to have a 24 hr killswitch deadline. If I had known I would have taken a screen-shot while I still had access to the information. Since I lost the phone at Canada's Wonderland (which is now closed for the season) I don't have access to the location where I lost the phone (under a roller-coaster probably), and so I wanted to send the Lost And Found people a screen-shot of it's last known location, but I guess I can't do that now. Your i-device was not designed to be a reliable unique storage for your media. It is not a backup device and everything is structured around you maintaining your media on a computer which is itself backed up. Sync transfer is one way, computer to device, matching the device content to the content on the computer (except purchased content as mentioned below). For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will probably have to use third party commercial software unless you have an older model iPod. Be careful, when you connect the iPhone to your mac, unless you have saved the photos. Synced photos may easily be accidentally deleted by syncing again. And do not enable iCloud Photo Library (Beta), that will erase synced photos as well. Synced Photos are not included in the device backups.
Set your iTunes Preferences to "Devices > Prevent iPos, iPhones, iPads from syncing automatically". Otherwise iTunes may launch and sync your iPhone with an empty iPhoto library the moment you connect it.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to sync the synced photos back. Apple recommends to mail them back, but that would be a lot of clicking (iTunes: Syncing photos - Apple Support). You could also share them to a Shared Album, but a third party app like TD recommended, will be better.
