I'm Gonna Toss This Thing -- So Slow

I moved from PC to Mac in January and I have the OSX 10.4 and I'm about ready to spit and toss this thing in the trash. It is so slow for every application, every program, every file, and every time I get on the internet (cable modem), I can't stand it. I've tried the forums and clean up programs and diagnostics and all that stuff. This thing is down to a crawl and I don't know what to do. Not sure how to get support either. I'm about ready to go back to Dell. Please help!!

"I find it difficult to find help on this site"
ween,
Last night I spent two hours reading various Apple articles that were new to me regarding iTunes and iPods. I read those articles not here at Discussions, but at Support.
After two hours of reading, I was able to determine that it may take me quite some time to become either proficient or expert. I read nothing confusing or contradictory, just had to stay focused on the particular products that interested me, as it's easy to go off and start reading something that's "related" but that won't do me any substantial good this early in my learning curve. For instance, there's absolutely no point in learning about iTunes 6 (or 4 or 5, for that matter) when in fact I already have iTunes 7 installed.
To reach Support, click on the purple "Support" tab at the top of this page, then narrow down to your area of interest, where you can view a main Support page for a particular Apple product.
Since you're still new to Mac, you need to review the main Support page for the Intel based iMac and also the main Support page for OS X Tiger (10.4). At this point, you need to stay away from the main Apple sales information areas and from the Apple Store areas, and from the Discussions.
Go through the main Support page and read everything (including tutorials) targeted to the beginner or new user. Ignore the troubleshooting aspects in favor of learning the basics. At this point, you should not be expecting problems, but you should try to take the attitude that your iMac will at some point "just work" and therefore at this time you should be concentrating on how to avoid problems, not how to solve them.
I may get some flack from other posters, some much more learned than me, for suggesting this, but, after you've had nine months of not being able to benefit AT ALL from your new iMac, the only thing that makes sense to me is that you should save all your important files to some location other than your iMac, and entirely erase your iMac and start from scratch. I'd recommend adding nothing to your iMac until you have the basic setup running like greased lightning. I see no point in saving your settings since it's been working so poorly for you until now. Who knows where the problems started?
The install from the original grey-labeled DVDs is simple to perform, whether you choose the "easy" install or "customized" install, and all the software updates are much less daunting when not performed singly, but in the now condensed form that will be offered to you once you've completed the fresh OS install of 10.4.4 from your DVDs.
For example, instead of doing multiple OS X updates, there will only be a single Combo update that will take your iMac from 10.4.4 to 10.4.8. Same thing with most other things, except some of the iLife applications take two software updates to bring them current.
First, however, check that there's nothing wrong with your cable's delivery of internet access. If necessary, pull out the Dell to verify that your cable modem is doing what it should, and that there are no firmware updates available for that particular piece of hardware either from the manufacturer, or from the cable company that may have provided it to you.
You might email them or phone them to be certain. After nine months, another day or two to exchange email about that shouldn't be too bad. In addition, you should probably check at your cable provider's website to see if there's a place where you need to adjust some settings. While it's been several years since I had a cable hookup, I seem to recall that one of the things they wanted was to know what type of hookup I'd be making with what brand of computer, or some such. I may be mistaken, or that may no longer be relevant, or that may not be the case with your cable provider.
Good luck, and keep at it, as satisfaction is undoubtedly closer than you expect:))
P.S.
If your OS is still at 10.4.5, that may be part of your problem, as there actually ARE fixes for problems (issues) introduced in each each Software Update. There's no point in erasing to start over if you do not intend on updating your software. Since 10.4.4 was the earliest Intel version, some of the earliest discovered issues (for some users) were not resolved until at least 10.4.6

  • Sending mails - I'm gonna kill this thing!

    Hey,
Can anyone give me a clue as to what I need to do. I've set up my e-mail account pretty easily, but I can only send mails to people with the same kind of e-mail address es me (o2.ie adds). Anyone got ideas what in the world I ought to do....
    Cheers!

i've checked with my isp, and a very angry little man
informed that there was no authentication required.
Which ISP did you contact to ask for this information, O2 or Eircom?
also i double checked with him and with my e-mail
provider that because i'm using broadband i need to
use my isp outgoing server not my e-mail providers.
Yes, I've confirmed this, it's described in O2's support website. Actually, it's the only thing that's clearly explained in their mail setup "help" web page:
    http://web.o2.ie/personal/help/connectingto_theinternet/outlook.jsp
and now this morning, it seems not even o2.ie address
    can be sent to either.
OK. Please, confirm, do you have an @eircom.net address in addition to the @o2.ie e-mail address? If yes, have you created a separate account in Mail for it (don't do it if you haven't yet, I just want to know)? Maybe Eircom's outgoing server only allows mail to be sent from an @eircom.net address, have you tried that?

  • What generates the message "Connecting To 1.2.3.4.." and how can I stop this "thing" from slowing down my WEB response times ????

This problem started in January 2011. I have an AT&T 3G wireless connection to the INTERNET.
Response time had always been amazing with the 3G and Firefox. Starting one day in January I started having long delays with every website, page, etc., etc. that I accessed. The message "Connecting To 1.2.3.4..." appeared with everything I did.

The "connecting to 1.2.3.4" is an HTML code-snippet that AT&T is injecting in to HTML pages that calls a javascript image accelerator (presumably hitting some AT&T cache) sitting on the server with the IP address "1.2.3.4". They're doing this to improve image quality/download speed on mobiles, but given this is a firefox forum I'm willing to bet the "34 people" that have this problem as well are using their AT&T 3G connection for internet tethering.
To confirm this, navigate to one of these slow pages in firefox and use the menus to find: View ==> Page Source You should see right at the top something like:
    < script src="http://1.2.3.4/bmi-int-js/bmi.js" language="javascript">< /script>
Given you're on a laptop, you probably don't want this image shrinking service so you need to block access the site "1.2.3.4". I'm sure you use to be able to block access to certain sites in the admin tool widget on FF5 but I couldn't find it anywhere. I installed a FF add-on called "blocksite" and told it to block "1.2.3.4". I noticed a significant improvement.
I actually had this problem on the UK telco O2 as well so it isn't just AT&T that is doing it.

Everytime I tried to click something on my computer screen, this thing would jump over to the reading list. Then, after awhile, my computer was running really slow. So, I decided to shut down my computer. Then, I turned it back on. When I tried to log on, everything was on caps. But, my keyboard was not on caps lock. I thought that it might work, but then I had to put a dot. And instead it gave me a >, as if I was holding down the shift key, and I wasn't. So, I can't get on my computer, and I need it for school tomorrow. Thanks so much.

  • Generally really unhappy with this thing. (This is a rant.)

OK, does anyone else think this thing is worth the money? A Verizon plan with unlimited data costs me and my wife almost $200 monthly and here's a brief list of issues:
First of all, Desktop Manger hates Mac computers. Media Sync doesn't work at all. It opens iPhoto for no reason, and can't see any of my iTunes content. But just read the RIM propaganda about how it seamlessly works with all your content.
The browser experience is nearly useless, even after trying everone's tips to optimize it, and you can't specify any other browser as the default. I have apps like Kayak for browsing flight and hotel info, but good luck trying to book something from your phone. I can't even get movie tickets reliably because the browser interface is painfully slow and hangs up constantly. It's like dial-up on a postage stamp screen.
Tiny screen, and the $%#@ trackball is maddening! I'm sure the trackpad is better, but I guess we got the version just before it was released.
Just tried to remove a couple of useless apps via Desktop Manager and the process literally took over 50 minutes to remove them, during which time the phone can't be used. Then another 10 minutes to restart, then it starts to sync all over again and my wallpaper, custom ringtones and more are JUST PLAIN GONE!
I could go on all day, but here's the thing that I can't believe:
I got all excited about the Torch. Great independent reviews, full touch-screen experience plus a physical keyboard, etc.
The catch? AT&T ONLY! Simply can't have one if you have Verizon. I've been holding out on chucking this brick for an iPhone because of the AT&T monopoly, but I'm just about ready to bite the bullet because this device is nearly useless for anything but phone calls & email.
Anybody else ready to microwave this burrito?
    Thanks for listening...
    T

I don't know what you're doing to need unlimited data. I use the internet on mine all the time and have not even come close to my 500MB data.
As for the browser, go to the Opera website and download Opera Mini. The zooming is a bit strange, but no huge hurtle. It helped me access some sites that I couldn't with the BlackBerry browser. You can have the BB browser identify as Firefox or IE. It's in Browser Configuration in the Options category.
Try to uninstall and reinstall Desktop Manager. If you're using version 6.0, try 5.0 and vice versa.
I have had very, very few problems with my trackball. I've had my phone for a year. If it's sticky or not rolling correctly, run it over some newspaper. The screen is larger than some other BBs.
You can remove apps right from the phone. It shouldn't take that long. Go to the options and applications and delete it.
Always back up your phone before you change anything. If something is gone, then you can just back up your phone and try again. I don't know what all is syncing that shouldn't be. You should not have to reload things after deleting an app. You could back up your phone, then wipe it and start over, as other more tech savvy people have mentioned.
If you're really that unhappy and want to get an iPhone, though I have no idea why you'd want one, then just do it. No sense in being miserable. Perhaps you just have a defective phone.

  • This Thing is a Frustrating Piece of Garbage...

...and Apple's user manual isn't a whole lot of help.
So now that I've got your attention, I hope I can get some help.
I bought an iPod Nano as my first mp3 player because of Apple's reputation for intuitive and kluge-free operation, but so far this has been a frustrating and disappointing experience.
Some of the issues I'm having with this thing:
    1) I have a library of mp3 files on my computer, nicely arranged in folders. I import those folders into iTunes and synch to the Nano. Instead of having these files nicely organized on the Nano, I end up with a multiplicity of folders (i.e. instead of a "Beatles" folder I have folders named "Beatles", "Beatles, The", and "The Beatles" with their contents seemingly strewn randomly among them. Yeah, that makes individual songs REAL easy to find.
    2) Along similar lines, this overly-helpful little monster decides to strew album contents among folders that it creates on its own. For instance, I end up with three Flogging Molly albums in the "Flogging Molly" folder, but then I end up with a separate "Flogging Molly / Lucinda Williams" folder for one individual song that has a guest artist involved. So not only does this stupid thing scatter the contents, I can't listen to the album in its intended order because the little Nazi is dictating otherwise. ***?
    3) I was hoping to make use of the handy video feature. But I can't get the frigging video files to download to my computer. Yes, I tried using the "Help" menu and yes, I read the frigging manual. It tells me I need to "...click iPod nano in the device list and click the Summary tab". I'd be happy to do so but I can find no "device list", nor is there any such thing as a Summary tab on my iTunes menu. I see my iPod listed under "Devices" in the column on the left side of the screen, but the only options I have associated with that is to expand it to show individual folders for Music, Movies, and TV Shows. The manual states that, alternately, I can go to "My Computer" where I can see that the iPod is treated as an external hard drive. Except that it isn't. Yes, it's plugged into an active USB port, and yes, iTunes is on. But my computer doesn't display the nano as an external drive, whereas it DOES display my 500 gB external hard drive when I attach it to the same USB port.
    4) My displeasure doesn't end with the nano. iTunes is similarly an anger-inducing little dictator of an application. I've checked the "Sync only checked songs and videos" box and then clicked the "Sync" tab at the bottom right of the window several times, yet my nano is loaded with files that I DON'T WANT LOADED on it. Again, I've read the manual and am pretty certain that I'm doing this right, with the possible exception that the manual states I need to click on the "apply" button. Am I wrong in assuming that the "sync" button is the "apply" button, because there for **** sure isn't anything labelled "apply" anywhere on the screen or in the drop downs.
So if you've gathered that I'm less than enchanted, you're quite right. I hope someone at Apple reads this and has a good, hard look at these issues, because at this point I'm regretting spending a lot more for an Apple product because of their reputation, only to find out that my music and videos are being held captive by an electronic Kim Jong-il. And hopefully someone here can help me figure out how to use this lovely-but-aggravating little monster.
    Thanks!

I ended up checking the "Manually manage music and videos" box under "options" on the "Summary" page.
Then I clicked on the arrow to the left of my iPod in the left column, and clicked on "Music".
Next, I found the files I wanted to remove. Say, for instance, I wanted to get rid of all the "Rage Against the Machine" files- clicked on the topmost file to highlight it, held down the shift key, clicked on the bottommost file so that all of the "Rage Against the Machine" files were highlighted, then right clicked to bring up the menu and clicked on "Delete". When the "Are you sure you want to remove these?" window showed up I clicked on "Remove". Now all of these songs are gone from the nano but are still in my iTunes files.
Similarly, I looked in the "Artist" colum and found songs that had variations on artist names. So for instance I went through all the Beatles tunes and found the songs listing the artist as "Beatles, The". Clicked on each of those songs one at a time to highlight each one, right clicked to bring up "Get Info", clicked on the "Info" tab, and changed the artist name simply to "Beatles" and clicked on "OK".
Finally I clicked on the "eject" icon just to the right of the iPod name. After a brief sync it was Ok to remove the iPod. And now my music files are crunched down into individual files, and the stuff I don't want isn't on the nano.

  • This thing is not working!! i need help please!!!

i picked up a ipod nano today figureing that its a pretty good mp3 player for my needs... i get home turn the thing on mess with it for a few mins turn it off plug it in to charge and it still turns on and off so im figureing okay cool ill install my drivers and itunes and start building my playlist well the first issue i get is itunes will not start up it just flat out refuses... to start up i have no idea why the updater worked fine for what i installed off the disk which told me everything was up to date as always i went to apple.com the website to make sure drivers arethe correct ones found out they are not...GREAT!!!.. so i delete the old drivers and install the new ones then i go to update my ipod nano and it says "sorry device notfound" mean while my ipods frozen giveing me the no disconnect symbol it wont even disconnect when i turn off the usb device then it gave me the battery charge warning light then turned right off after freaking out. i then spent a little while redoing my itunes and ipod updaters to where there is no application issues. i kept checking my ipod to see if it was chargeing theres no indicator whats so ever when the ipod nano is turned off of it getting charged like my moms old ipod 20 gig and shes had that thing forever without any issues at all. meanwhile my ipod is a metal electronic light paper weight right now.. if this thing doesn't work when i get up in the afternoon tomorrow form it being connected to a AC adapter like apple says it should work im takeing it back and gonna drop the extra 100 on the 30gig that i know shouldn't have any issues... cause **** this *****!!!
if any of you can tell me how to get my ipod nano to turn on that would be great let alone how i can get it to update and then export songs to the thing

    Hi,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
    the
first issue i get is itunes will not start up it just
flat out refuses... to start up i have no idea why
You might want to ask for help in the iTunes for Windows Forum
the updater worked fine for what i installed off the
disk which told me everything was up to date as
always i went to apple.com the website to make sure
drivers arethe correct ones found out they are
not...GREAT!!!.. so i delete the old drivers and
    install the new ones
Sorry, I'm on a Mac so I'm not sure what "drivers" you are referring to.
You need iTunes and the latest version is 6.0.2.
You also want the version 1.1 software for the nano.
Both are available for free from www.apple.com
then i go to update my ipod nano
and it says "sorry device notfound" mean while my
ipods frozen giveing me the no disconnect symbol it
wont even disconnect when i turn off the usb device
then it gave me the battery charge warning light then
turned right off after freaking out.
Here is a link that may help with the above:
    Symptom
One or more of the following occurs:
iPod does not show up in iTunes or as disk in Windows Explorer
iPod does not show up as disk in Windows Explorer (even though disk mode is enabled on the iPod)
iTunes and Windows Explorer report the wrong amount of available space on iPod
No songs appear on the iPod after an apparently successful update from iTunes
Music copied to mapped network drive instead of iPod
    Then read this link:
Strange iPod behavior when Windows confuses iPod with network drive
    There's also this:
Your Windows PC doesn't recognize iPod
    i then spent a
little while redoing my itunes and ipod updaters to
where there is no application issues. i kept checking
my ipod to see if it was chargeing theres no
indicator whats so ever when the ipod nano is turned
off of it getting charged like my moms old ipod 20
gig and shes had that thing forever without any
    issues at all.
If the nano is charging when it is turned on there is a small icon in the top right of the screen. If it is turned off the icon is large and uses all the screen.
iPod: About the battery charge status icon
Another link (sorry to give you so much reading to do):
    iPod's battery doesn't charge
meanwhile my ipod is a metal
electronic light paper weight right now.. if this
thing doesn't work when i get up in the afternoon
tomorrow form it being connected to a AC adapter like
apple says it should work im takeing it back and
gonna drop the extra 100 on the 30gig that i know
shouldn't have any issues... cause **** this
if any of you can tell me how to get my ipod nano to
turn on that would be great let alone how i can get
it to update and then export songs to the thing
    Hope some of those help.

  • Airport Extreme Base Station - I am ready to throw this thing...

    Dear All,
I'm about ready to throw this thing out the window, along w/ everything else from Apple I own... Sorry, at my wits-end and have finally had it with this thing.
My g/f and I live in an apt with an Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS), 10/100baseT Switch, Xbox 360, PC clone tower (PowerSpec), and two Centrino Laptops... The topology our network is the following
    DSL == Modem => AEBS => 10/100 Switch => (XBox 360, Powerspec)
Every other day, the AEBS drops out for no obvious reason. Not only for no reason, it DROPS the connection and causes interference on our wired network. If I'm playing Call of Duty 2, for instance, and using Skype at the same time, anywhere from 10-30min later, the WiFi connection will drop altogether and the wired network will go down too.
I've done multiple hard-resets and the issue persists. Apple wants $80 to talk to me (after we paid $150 for it because it's supposedly "the best") after only owning it for a little over a year. It seems that this problem has been persistent.
My g/f finally cracked down and bought a Verizon EVDO card and uses it while she is out, but in the house because she cannot use our home network reliably.
I've tried using it on WPA2, WEP, and even left it open but the thing still drops for no reason...sometimes within hours, or two two days. I'll come home, boot up my laptop, and the WiFi is completely gone...non-existant. Boot hers, same thing... I doubt it's interference because we have 1 cordless phone and it's a 900mhz, which we rarely use anyway.
Does anyone else have any of the problem(s) we're having? This has been semi-often since we got it, and all Apple told us was "interference" and won't help us because we use PC (I used to own a Mac, hence why I got this).

Update: Well, the AEBS 'bombed' out again when I got home on Friday, no access whatsoever.
I unplugged my DSL modem from it, plugged it in directly to my HP notebook, and was surfing the 'net w/out a problem. Power cycled the AEBS and it worked fine. That was just over one day on firmware v5.5.1, longer than it lasted on v5.7.
    Here's my conclusion...
I'm 'convinced' that v5.7 is buggy and it's known, or well documented. It will cost more money to fix it, or release a new firmware version that repairs the bugs from v5.7, than to just leave it alone and hope people either downgrade to v5.5.1 or purchase a new AEBS (w/ 802.11n).
After countless hours of dealing w/ this, of which I feel like a complete and utter fool, I went out and bought a competitor's product (Linksys) and installed it on Saturday morning. As of this writing, I've had no drop-outs and the access seems to be more punctual, or responsive than when I was accessing under my AEBS. Therefore, I'm happy to say my problem of unreliable WiFi access in my apt is solved, but only after spending $50 to purchase a new router.
I spent $180 on the AEBS and I can remember the first time I had to call AppleCare about printing issues I was having with it; I could print from Windows XP (both wired and wireless), but not from Tiger OSX 10.4. No-one had a clue, but was only told that the issue was my "printer" not the AEBS or my Mac. Despite repeated attempts to re-inform that it works just fine under Windows XP with both my Lexmark and Canon inkjets, it would not print properly (bombed out half/way through the page) under Mac OSX.
So, here on my shelf, sits the Airport Extreme Base Station that I paid $180 for, and it is basically useless. Apple could care less about it, but then again, why should they--after all, it had a 1 year warranty and despite trying to resolve issues I had w/ it while it was in fact within the warranty period, that time has come and gone.

  • Aargh!  What do I have to do to speed up this thing???

    Hi,
Hopefully someone can help me. I'm using the trial version of Lightroom 1.0 and have tried everything to speed this thing up but nothing is working. This application would be absolutely brilliant if it weren't so dog slow. The whole point is to speed up the workflow but at this rate the time wasted is thoroughly frustration.
Okay, what's happening. First, when I'm in the Library module culling photos, there are all kinds of little issues but the two big ones for me are when I delete a file, the entire library resets itself to I don't know what kind of sequence. Delete a file and Lightroom jumps to a different file order and lands on a file that wasn't the next one in the sequence. So I have to close Lightroom and reopen it to have the files sorted the way they originally were when I was working on them. This I just don't understand.
Also, in the Library module, going from file to file, I am always getting the "Working..." thing coming up so it takes several seconds for each pic to come up. WAY too slow. When in the Develop module, I am constantly getting the "Loading..." thing coming up. This slows everything down to a snail's pace and is frustrating!!
I have tried all the tips I could find here and on Lightroom Extra (fabulous site BTW!). I have turned XMP off, moved my Library to a faster drive, rendered standard previews to larger than my screen size on import, and rendered 1:1 previews. None of these changes have done anything for the speed. Why???
What else can I do? I have 2 megs of RAM and a fast enough system that I can easily run multiple other photo processing applications simultaneously without any speed problems at all. So what is the problem with Lightroom? I had been trying out Beta 4.1 with exactly the same issues. I thought Lightroom 1.0 would solve these but alas, I am in the same predicament. I have tried it on 2 different computers and have the same problem.
Can anyone help? What do I need to do to speed this thing up to workable speeds? I would really like to use this application and would be ready to buy it now if I could be sure this isn't the speed (or lack thereof) that I will be faced with on a regular basis.
    Please help!
    Thanks!

Go to sysinternals.com and download "Process Explorer". Install this to some reasonable location.
When Lr seems to be wedged, switch to Process Explorer and choose the Lightroom process in the top frame. This will show all the associated subprocess, threads, memory use, open files. Basically everything about this process.
You can save a snapshop of the Lightroom process, as well. In my work it helps if customers take a few snapshots over 1-2 minutes and send them in. I don't know if Adobe has their own way of doing this.
This app also helps you look for any other processes that might be there you are not aware of. So many apps and drivers install little "helper" processes that may interact poorly with other processes. I'd certainly turn off any "real time" virus protection if you have it enabled. No virus checker is ever 100% accurate, and running one is always a trade-off between security and convenience. At least keep it from scanning your Lightroom library directory. There may be other suspect apps that can be inspected with this tool.
Some notes based on what I've read so far:
    - XP and OS X users please, please, please do NOT "defrag" your hard drive. You do not need to do it. Modern file systems already know how to lay down files optimally over time, as long as you have some free space and memory available. In fact, you may be making things _worse_ since a defrag may move files around from the "hot" areas that NTFS and HFS+ maintain to make file retrieval faster.
There are some rare cases where a defrag is necessary, but few of us here will hit those cases. Let the filesystem and OS do the job it is designed to do. Instead, take that time and go work on some photos!
    - OS X users, what do you have in your Startup Items? Why? Windows users, why so many things in your Taskbar? Clean that cruft up. Many of these little apps that come with device drivers are poorly written little value-add widgets that do not give you much, may not be the best written app and may simply interact poorly with other apps. Minimize the chances of this happening by at least disabling or removing most of them while testing Lightroom for performance problems. This is part of moving from the known to the unknown to solve problems in a logical manner.
    - Make sure you have enough free space on your main partition(s). Different filesystems have different requirements, but a modern OS needs a decent chunk of free space (it does NOT have to be contiguous) and a chunk of memory to maintain a proper caching file system. A hand-waving value is make sure you have some smaller percentage free /at least/. Of course, those of us with big drives have to worry less, even done to 1%!

  • Why don't i want to sell this thing

I just ordered a C2D MBP and have been looking for a way to sell my PB and even got an offer for it BUT i have an unhealthy attraction for this thing. This isn't the first time i've tried to sell it and i always end up holding on to it. A faster machine would be ideal and whilst the PB is no slouch its a tad slow for me.
So whats my problem, this is the first mac i've had doubts about giving away. In fact i've considered getting it Laser etched this week but that'll mean i have to keep it till its death. Its also a shame i can't keep both...well technically. I can keep it and my parents would buy me a new Laptop in 4-5 months time or take matters into my own hands and swap the PB for a MBP now. The latter will make me more productive now whilst the former will make me suffer in productivity for 4-5 months...nothing major though.
    What do i do?

    Hi all,
I agree with Maxit. If hadn't kept my old Ti'PB when I got my G5 I'd have been stuffed! As the G5 is "in the shop" for it's 4th (yes you read it right - 4th!!) repair session! & without my trusty Ti' Powerbook my Photographic workflow would've been halted in it's tracks - yes its slow, but it works & no workflow equals no money!
Its always good to have a backup machine! But it maybe worth selling it for good money & buying a cheaper one - off Ebay?!? (Just know what your buying - if its fully working & reliable etc.)
Though I must say its never nice say goodbye to a machine that has served you well all its life.
The choice is yours. If you cant decide, flip a coin.... "ok, best out of three!" lol!

  • First day with this thing and I give up...

I have to say I was really excited to get this Time Capsule today, but I can't get it connected to the internet for the life of me.  I've tried everything...and I'm starting to regret the purchase.  I have Optimum online and currently use a NetGear router, with no issues.  I've gone through the set up process 20 times now with the Time Capsule, I tried using any setup I can imagine, but I still cannot get connected to the internet with this thing.  If anyone has any info they can lend I would appreciate it.  I'm ready to return this thing.

I have no problems running TC with windows computers. but it needs to be setup correctly.
I want you to go about this in a different way.. cable modems normally register the MAC address of the router and do not readily give it up.
Please unplug the TC from power.. press in the reset button.. power on, still holding in reset.. wait until front led flashes rapidly. Release the reset.. and allow it to finish booting. That is full factory reset btw.
Please turn off the cable modem and leave it off for 15min.. to allow the lease to expire from the old router.
Then power on the cable modem.. wait 2min.. power on the TC.. plugged in by ethernet to wan port, ie the port next to USB, with sunburst symbol.
Start up the computer plugged by ethernet into the LAN port of the TC.. ie any of the three ports marked <--->
Open the airport utility.. go to manual setup.. on the main summary page check what the IP address of the wan port is. It has to be a public ip.
Now check the PC ethernet address by opening a command prompt and typing ipconfig /all
Please note the full ip address, gateway and dns address you are given.
Please ping a website.. and see if there is a response..
You can start with the public address of the TC and the dns address of the ISP. If they fail the issue is maybe the firewall on the computer.. or computer has switch to different setting, work or public location instead of home.
Turn off ipv6 in both the TC and the windows .. that only makes it harder.
If you get some progress.. remember SMB names are short, no spaces, pure alphanumeric.. by default apple names have spaces.. please change both the name of the TC and the wireless to SMB compatible.
