I'm having frequent long periods of "Firefox not responding" with 7.0.1. What's up with that?

I am using Window 7. What else would you like to know?

I might have discovered the solution without starting over with all your places and bookmarks.
Right after i installed 7.0.1 over a week ago, every 10-30 min When i would be watching videos online, it would freeze for 20-30 seconds. Firefox would say ( Not responding) both firefox and the plugin container process would be very large memory files. I tried to go back to Firefox 5.0. No avail it would still freeze.I tried to disable the plugin container . no good. I tried to adjust memory or cache or plugin settings in “about:config”.Nothing fixed it!
I finally discovered why my Firefox 7.01 was periodic hanging fix. It is something to do with some of your personal files. download this this add on and install it
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/places-maintenance/
or you can Google "places maintenance Firefox"
After you install the add on, restart Firefox.go to "tools", then "add ons" and then click “extensions” tab ,then click' options" on the "places maintenance" entry. choose "ALL' or just "expire" and hit "execute", then wait until its done., restart Firefox. should be fine then and all my bookmarks, customizations ,settings, and history stays untouched!
After i did this my Firefox did not freeze once for over 3 days straight. Might not work for everyone. I already read that Mozilla is aware of the problem and are working on a fix it in the full version of 8( the 8 beta did not fix the problem for me) . But they said this is a good temporary fix at least,( might be permanent)
For me at least ,Firefox works fine in 7 now. perfect actually. And many people i saw on similar forums had similar problems.
Enjoy. Hope this helped

• What does "Firefox not Responding" mean

Lately I am getting the message on the top of my screen that says, "FIREFOX NOT RESPONDING." Also, there is the little circle icon that goes around and whatever I click on does not open up. I shut off my computer manually, and when I started it up again the messages always say: Do you want to start in Safe Mode.....so that's what I did. Now, the color in my task bar (bottom) changed from blue to black. How can I make it blue again. I have no idea what Safe Mode means but I thought I would try it; I won't do it again!

• I just bought a new Gateway desktop comeputer that runs windows 8 and I keep getting Firefox not responding when trying to view websites.

My internet connection is good, so why is Firefox not responding?

This problem can be caused by pages that use Flash media. Here is some standard guidance that addresses the most common reasons for Flash problems in Firefox. I'm sure you've seen some of it before, but just in case:
(1) If you have installed any recorders/downloaders that interact with Flash media, make sure they are as up-to-date as possible, or disable them.
(2) Disable hardware graphics acceleration in Firefox and in Flash
(A) In Firefox, un-check the box here and restart:
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced > General > "Use hardware acceleration when available"
(B) In Flash, see this support article from Adobe: http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/video-playback-issues.html#main_Solve_video_playback_issues
(3) Disable protected mode
See this support article from Adobe under the heading "Last Resort": [http://forums.adobe.com/message/4468493#TemporaryWorkaround Adobe Forums: How do I troubleshoot Flash Player's protected mode for Firefox?]

• When I open Firefox, it goes to the first page and then stops, saying "Not Responding" with the cursor spinning. What can I do to fix this? Thanks for any help

When I open Firefox, it goes to the first page I open, but then stops and says "Not Responding" with the mouse cursor spinning. I hit the close button and it says Windows is searching for a solution (which doesn't come).
When I open Firefox again, it says:
Well, this is embarrassing.
Firefox is having trouble recovering your windows and tabs. This is usually caused by a recently opened web page.
You can try:
Removing one or more tabs that you think may be causing the problem
Starting an entirely new browsing session
Any ideas? I gretly appreciate any help. Thanks!!

What is that first page?
Can't you open any web pages in Firefox?
Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.
A possible cause is security software (firewall,anti-virus) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

• Mozilla firefox (not responding) 27

I have recently changed to mozilla firefox 27. to update my windows 7 vista and constantly it keeps freezing and saying not responding and i have to wait to carry on, I am not great on computers and need help as simple as possible so i understand please someone help.

I have same. Vista 7 and er...sometimes Firefox.
I have the latest Firefox installed hoping that it wold stop that
Mozilla Firefox (not responding) cropping up...
My mistake. Since up(lol)grading to the latest that error is almost permanantly etched into my screen. It is DREADFUL.
Even at launch I can get that message.
I can NEVER get past 35-40 mins before it will crop up and hang the PC.
I get that and its oft companion "Plug in busy stopping you having fun" etc
I have written to Mozilla twice3 (only to be ignored) that this is not OUR error, but THEIRS. Basically your browser falls over.
As for solutions - sorry - I will not be fobbed off with FAQs (which never cover one's particular prob) and the "solution" of "Oh, just RESET Firefox" does NOT work. It won't work because all I am doing is rebooting a faulty browser.
So whilst having to go back to IE will Firefox be actually FIXING their software so that the NEXT upgrade can actually SUSTAIN a browsing session that could ooo maybe go over an hour?
Currently I have the Task Manager open permanantly so as to flag "END TASK" next to "firefox is not running...."

Hello Darari.
It's possible that you are having a problem with some Firefox add-on that is hindering your Firefox's normal behavior. Have you tried disabling all add-ons (just to check), to see if Firefox goes back to normal?
Whenever you have a problem with Firefox, whatever it is, you should make sure it's not caused by one (or more than one) of your installed add-ons, be it an extension, a theme or a plugin. To do that easily and cleanly, run Firefox in [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode safe mode] (don't forget to select ''Disable all add-ons'' when you start safe mode). If the problem disappears, you know it's from an add-on. Disable them all in normal mode, and enable them one at a time until you find the source of the problem. See [http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+extensions+and+themes this article] for information about troubleshooting extensions and theme and [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting+plugins this one] for plugins.
If you need support for one of your add-ons, you'll have to contact its author.

• (06 Oct 14) updated firefox and Kaspersky, now have problems with Barclays site - firefox "not responding" and plugin error on trying to close. Help!

Updated Kaspersky to 15.0.0.463(a) - ( comes with "safe money" - now turned off).
Updated Firefox from (old) version to 32.0.3.
Barclays bank site loads properly, and allows access to accounts BUT when I try to look at a statement, Firefox "not responding" and a blank/ unresponsive page is displayed.
In order to acheive any movement I have to close firefox... this gives rise to windows wanting to send error data, and Firefox apologising for loosing the tab.
None of which allows me to do essential banking transactions.
It is this machine that has the problem - I can access without problems via work computer (using google Chrome)

My guess is that your statement is a PDF document, since banks and other companies often use that format for statements.
Firefox has various options for viewing PDFs, including a built-in PDF viewer (not as full featured as Adobe's), or the option to use a plugin such as Adobe Acrobat, or to launch the PDF in an external application. This article describes how to experiment with that setting: [[How to disable the built-in PDF viewer and use another viewer]].
On another subject, your plugin list has various plugins described as "Google Chrome Extension". I haven't seen that before. Could you review the list and see whether they really should be active in Firefox or can be deactivated?
Open the Add-ons page using either:
* Ctrl+Shift+a
* "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click Plugins.
For those that are not essential, I suggest changing them to "Never Activate". This might not take effect immediately in that window, but should disable them in new windows.

• While clicking on a page, like Facebook, or a web page, Firefox will be unresponsive and then go to a black screen saying Firefox Not Responding.

When I am on Facebook, if I click on the link to view "Most Recent" or if I am clicking on another link, Firefox will first freeze and then will go to a black screen. At the top of the screen in the orange bar it says: Firefox,-Not Responding and the name of the app (Facebook), for example next to it. This black screen will stay that way for approx. 20 seconds then will go back to the page.

Hi Mick. Thanks for your response. Is there anything I can do to resolve the problem. I am ok on computers but not really tech savvy. I have Firefox 9.0.1 with Windows Vista Home Premium, 64 bit. Thank you for any additional help you can give me.

• When i want to go another from a tab,it shows firefox not responding, for a while then opens that tab!this is embarrassing me a lot by taking so much time!!why

I have two inconviniences with fire fox..
1)when i want to go another from a tab,it shows firefox not responding, for a while then opens that tab!this is embarrassing me a lot by taking so much time!!why it happens?
2) every time when adobe flash player is updated, it shows flash player can't be installed and it crashes! it says 'disable real player' though i never installed real player!!
plz Let me know why it happens to me????

1. Update firefox to the latest version 2. and disable real player in menu->addons->plugins.
Recent crashes of certain multimedia contents (this includes Youtube videos, certain flash games and other applications) in conjunction with Firefox 13 are most probably caused by a recent Flash 11.3 update and/or a malfunctioning Real Player browser plugin.
In order to remedy the problem, please perform the steps mentioned in these Knowledge Base articles:
[[Flash Plugin - Keep it up to date and troubleshoot problems]]
[[Flash 11.3 crashes]]
[[Flash 11.3 doesn't load video in Firefox]]
Other, more technical information about these issues can be found under these Links:

Please tell us if this helped!
Please check if all your plugins are up-to-date. To do this, go to the [http://mozilla.com/plugincheck Mozilla Plugin Check site].
Once you're there, the site will check if all your plugins have the latest versions.
If you see plugins in the list that have a yellow ''Update'' button or a red ''Update now'' button, please update these immediately.
To do so, please click each red or yellow button. Then you should see a site that allows you to download the latest version. Double-click the downloaded file to start the installation and follow the steps mentioned in the installation procedure.

Error message is FAILED TO GET DISPATCH FROM IBRWSR2. Then when you click on it the next error message says: PHTML IS NULL. You have to click this error message twice and then the PDF finally loads. Happened every time
Does anyone have a solution since Adobe will not respond?
As a last resort I will try uninstalling the Adobe Reader XI and install Adobe Reader 10 instead. It seems to work ok. But when I try to install version 10 the Adobe site tries to install XI. Any ideas?

It worked just fine for me.

• Many, many times in a session, I get this: Mozilla Firefox (Not Responding). Frustration is setting in when I have to kill the computer, and start all over again. Anger is beginning a slow burn, too.

Since the latest version (don't even ask me) was downloaded and installed, many times in a session when I am browsing the net, or opening a text document or a spreadsheet, flipping back and forth, I'll have to stop and sit for an indeterminate amount of time because up on the header, I'll get the message Mozilla Firefox (Not Responding). When looking down toward the front of the laptop, I note the hard drive is going full bore, whole hog, whatever you want to call it. Sometimes after repeated hitting the "enter" key, the program will catch up, and begin functioning again. Other times, because the program is stuck, the laptop will overheat, causing me to manually shut down, wait a while while the hard drive cools, then restarting. When I have to manually kill the session, I cannot, repeat CANNOT get the machine shutdown programs to work.
What the hell is wrong with Firefox with this crap?

Hello jesterabk, '''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
* You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article for that.
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''
''When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.''
Thank you.

• After searching in Google, resulting links will not open, get a 'Firefox not responding' message. What is the solution? Ray Allum

After doing a Google search for web sites, the reultant links will not open, a 'Firefox not responding' shows in the URL bar.

I had the same problem and my solution was to disable the PDF extension that came with Firefox 4 which belongs to another company. I found out that it wast interfering with ReaderX. I unabled it and restarted Firefox. I have had no problems since then. Go to Tools, Add-On and click on Extensions and disable the PDF extension. I hope this helps
