I'm looking to buy a Mac mini, has the tv connection issue been totally fixed yet?

As above. I'm looking to buy a Mac mini 2.6 i7 fusion drive and want to connect it to my Panasonic viera HDTV. (27") read a lot about People having issues connecting to a HDTV. My tv only has 2 hdmi ports, no dvi VGA etc. if it hasn't been fixed I'm going to have to purchase a Smaller monitor due to lack of space!
Thanks in advance.

  • Looking towards buying a Mac Mini

My G4 Cube has died it's last death. The HD is gone. I had backed up a couple of days before, so I'm not in hysterics, but I am bummed ( I did lose some stuff, but nothing that I hadn't printed out and saved). I'd owned the Cube since April 2001. It had been through two hard drives, one new video card, several crashes that were "fixed" via DiscWarrior, but this time the Tek Serve folks said, "it won't boot at all except form our bench drive." Meaning, my HD is no more. I could replace it for about $200.
But what's the point? At 500 MHz, it's too slow to run all the neat things I want it to run - including Classic Applications. I also had purchased an impressive (to me) collection of peripherals, like a DVD drive (my cube only had the CD RW), etc.
Thusly, my relationship with the Cube was bad generally. Analogous to the old car that kept on breaking down no matter what you tried. It was serviced under warranty, but now it's been classified as "vintage" so there's little support out there - why should I even bother with something similar...?
But: the Mac Mini is appealing because it's compact and will allow me to use all the neat peripherals I have, it's fast, etc., etc., etc.
    Questions:
    1. I am an engineer and have the desire to run some applications that would normally only run on windows, I would thus plan on using Parallels. From other discussions, Parallels works great!
    2. [Edited by Host, please do not speculate on future Apple products.]
    3. Overall, you Mac Mini owner, is the Mac Mini generally good? Are you happy with it? Is it robust? That is, do you expect it to start up regularly and use it 8+ hours a day for all sorts of things? Is it a good investment? I'd like to think that once purchased (with the Apple care and such) that I'd get five solid years' worth of production out of it.

    [Post Edited by Hosts]
In addition, because of my generally BAD experience
with the G4 Cube, I don't want to get hosed by
purchasing a slower machine a month before a faster
one comes out. As a loyal Apple customer for quite a
while, I think I deserve to be a bit skeptical.
Whether you like it or not, attempting to discuss Apple's future plans or products that as yet don't exist IS a violation of the terms of use of the site here, because as you'll know as a long-time Apple user, Apple doesn't discuss it's plans or policies with anyone. As such, they created this site as a user-to-user forum for the specific purpose of discussion of technical matters relating to existing products. A brody may not have expressed it in an elegant manner, but your question could do nothing but solicit responses from those who can't contribute anything but speculative responses, and since those would be highly likely to get the thread removed completely, would not be in your own interests to see posted.
You are at liberty to avail yourself of any of the other sites which discuss Apple products and seek information about future plans there, though in truth you'll still get nothing more than guesswork - which seems to me a rather poor foundation on which to make a purchasing decision.
There is nothing, however, to prevent you seeking help with potential upgrades - as has actually been detailed here before, including information about possible processor swap-outs for minis which you'll find if you search for it.
That said, with a history of Apple systems use, you have earned the right to be a bit skeptical! All the more reason I'd think to ensure that regardless of what might or might not be the next product off the production line, the system you buy actually meets your needs, since if it does, the fact that it will be replaced at some point (as all systems are of course) will not matter because it will continue to meet that need.
The question therefore seems to me to be whether the current mini can run the software you need at sufficient speed to allow you to work, or whether you'd be better with a PC. Since it appears from your comments that you're going to require Parallels (or BootCamp) and Windows, the only advantage of buying a mini is if you would like to continue use of MacOS in addition to your Windows-based work or not. Only you can answer that, but it does reflect on the one real advantage of buying a mini - that doing so will give you the option to run both, while buying a PC will give you only Windows.
If, and only if, you would like the option to run both operating systems, the mini is an excellent system to choose. Not perfect and not lightning fast, but with 2Gb RAM it would outperform your now-deceased Cube by a significant factor. In context, it would give you roughly equal performance to a G5 dual processor system, and in processor-intensive work, actually be able to outperform it.
The limitations of the mini are that it contains a laptop 5400rpm drive and doesn't permit internal expansion (other than maxing out the RAM). However, it can be expended with additional storage and peripherals by adding them externally, so the core system does not really limit your options in the way that many people at first assume.
Since overall reliability seems to have been pretty good, there is not reason NOT to buy a mini unless the system isn't capable of supporting other needs, or if you have no wish to continue to run MacOS. I would certainly urge you not to base your choice on what may or may not be next - you will always be disappointed that way because even if you wait and get the latest/greatest thing when it comes out, it's not going to stay latest/greatest for long! My G5 was once the fastest system available, but while it's been overtaken by just about every mac in the product range, it still delivers the same power and runs the same software as it always did, and gives truly excellent service. In the world of Macs, as you'll know from your Cube, software does advance quite dramatically over time, but rarely to the point that it creases to be backwards compatible with earlier systems, so the imperative to keep hardware 'up to date' isn't entirely the same as in the Windows environment.

  • Mac mini and the powerbook, connecting the two

    Hi Everyone,
I'm currently on the move, so the convenience of portability is extremely important.
I'm a PowerBook user, with only little remaining hard drive space to spare. But, I also have an external hard drive to ease the matter. Now much of the space on my PB has been taken up by applications, but a large sum has also been used up by music. And by way of preference, I would rather not have to turn on my external in the event that I want to listen to music, which, really, is everytime I'm on my computer. So I'm looking to free up some space on my PB, which has lead me to consider a Mac mini. Whereas the PB would serve to house all my work applications and the external for all my work files, I anticipate that the mac mini would house all my music and other non-work related files.
But going back to the issue of portability and convenience, I wouldn't want to have to lug around a keyboard and monitor with the mini, and which that in mind, I was wonder if it's decently possible to connect the mini to my PB, and effectively running the mini and all its applications from my PB.
    Thank you all.
    Regards,
    Jeremy

Thank you for the facts and suggestions everyone. With all the information gathered, I've arrived at the following.
So, I do have an external, as mentioned, but with all the sensitive data on its drives, I'd rather not have to turn it on whenever I feel like listening to music. I normally power it on three-four times a week to work on my projects, and after each respective session, I turn it off, concerned that it may possibly overheat.. or break down, as it's happened to me before with another external, a few years back.
And I've come to agreement with you all, in that the mini with its current specs, isn't the most cost-effective and portable path I could take, with particular regards to my on-the-go lifestyle.
And I would rather not have my PB opened up at this point... then it occurred to me... my iPod. I'm currently at the office at the moment, so I'm unable to test this out, but is it possible to run music off the ipod through the PB's speakers, while it's (obviously) connected to the PB? Or I suppose I could wait for Apple's iPod Hi-Fi.

  • This version of Mac OS X 10.7 cannot be installed on this computer. Why Not. Mac Mini has the required spec.

    Hi...
I hope that you can help me!!
I am trying to update a recently purchased pre-owned Mac Mini to OSX Lion. ATM it is running OSX 10.6.8, with 2GHz Core 2 duo processor, and 2GB of DDR2 SD RAM. There is 30+ GB of hard drive available. The App Store has acknowledged the fact that I have previously bought OSX Lion, but when I try to download, it displays the following, "This version of Mac OS X 10.7 cannot be installed on this computer." It meets the required specs. Help!! How can I upgrade....

What model is it? There are some early Intel minis around that have had CPU upgrades. They can't run Lion, at least not without hacking.

  • What Mac mini has equivalent power (hardware wise) to a Macbook Pro i7 Core mid-2012 non retina laptop?

Hi everyone, this is my first post and I am interested to know which Mac mini has the power equivalence to a MacBook Pro "Core i7" 2.9GHz 13" Mid-2012' non retina's Specs?
    Macbook Pro Specs here:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook_pro/specs/macbook-pro-core-i7-2.9- 13-mid-2012-unibody-usb3-specs.html
My 2012 Macbook Pro was sadly stolen from my university's dorm room at UCLA. I am now looking again to buy another Apple Mac product. I specifically would like to buy a Mac Mini, since I believe it will fit my needs.
Any comments are greatly appreciated, thanks!

Given they all run at closely similar clock times I would expect similar or relatively close performance from either the i7 MBPs and i7 upgraded Minis from the same production periods. They both have similar hardware and similar CPUs. The upper-end MBPs, however, may have better GPUs - something you should check. Minis all use integrated graphics. MBPs of 2012 and on are all Retina models except for one 2012 MBP model. All 13" models use integrated graphics only. The 15" models all have an additional discrete GPU.

  • What happens to the guarantee if i buy an ipad mini in the US whilst in america then bring it back to the uk?

As in the question. I am looking to buy an ipad mini in the US as its cheaper and i get a better one with more memory for the same price as the basic model in the uk? But can someone tell me what happens to the guarantee that comes with it. can that be transfered to the uk? Incase there is a fault with the ipad?

Look to the right of your post to the More Like This box where the question has been asked and answered regarding warranty.
Do not forget you will be required to pay both sales tax in the US and import duty on your return to the UK.  I expect it will work out cheaper than a UK purchase though.
    Good luck.

  • Considering buying a Mac Mini but I need to know about support for dual monitors using DVI connectors.

I have a couple of DVI monitors and I'm looking to replace my Windows desktop with a Mac Mini.  I found an article that says it supports dual monitors with Thunderbolt, but I can't find any discussion of using it with existing monitor, or running multiple DVI displays off a single Thunderbolt port.
Has anyone done this?  If so, what's the best way to achieve it?

Yes, the Mac Mini has both an HDMI and Thunderbolt/MiniDisplay Port and supports dual displays in either Mirroring or Extended Desktop Mode.
It ships with an HDMI to DVI adapter that you can use for one DVI Display.
For the second DVI display you will need to buy a > Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter and plug that into the Thunderbolt/MiniDisplay Port.

  • Before I buy my Mac Mini

Although the answers to the questions below will probably not sway my decision to buy a Mini, they may well enhance the experience even more.
With Boot Camp, can I load Windows MCE?
I currently have all of my DVD's ripped to several terrabytes of hard disc [external] and use an extention of MCE called my movies which allows me to see trailors, artwork etc for all of my ripped DVD's, understanding that if the former answer is positive then this would not be an issue, if the answer id negative, will front row "see" and "play" these DVD's on my external drives? and will I be able to use a similar MAC application to see cover artwork etc?
I notice that the Mini has an optical audio out, so I can feed this to my AV AMP, is this 5:1?
    thx in anticipation
    PC   Windows XP

    Hi Again ani4ani
    You said:
"Just for clarity, assuming that the Mini sees my external drives, would the DVD's be played via iTunes or Front Row? Or is Front Row just another view of iTunes?"
OS X plays DVD's in either of two ways. You can either watch them on your desktop and resize the playback window accordingly using DVD Player, or you can have them instantly displayed full screen from the push of a button in front row. They are not played in iTunes! Front row is a media centre like application that ties all of your audio, pictures and video together in one easy to control, graphic rich environment on screen. It generally acts the same way that media centre does in windows, only it looks nicer and works better!
    You Said:
"Would I be able to see DVD artwork as I can see in MCE now or is it simple cut-n-paste like I would for CD album artwork which I can do in "Windows" iTunes now?"
I don't actually think that OS X displays DVD artwork for some reason, however I may be wrong. Take a look at the mac mini front row demonstration here http://www.apple.com/uk/macmini/frontrow.html just to see an example of what you would be getting.
    You Said:
"My external drives are obviously full of CD's in WMA format along with my ripped DVD's. I can assume that these would just be "seen" by iTunes and / or Front Row and wouldn't have to anything special to the drives. These drives are USB2 / 1394 btw
iTunes for Mac does not import WMA files, and therefore you would not be able to play them on a mac mini. The good news is, however, that WMA files can be imported into iTunes for Windows. You could simply import all of your WMA music into iTunes on your windows pc, select which audio file type you would like it to be converted to, and then the new audio format will be compatible with iTunes on the mac. It's a little confusing and a mystery why they don't allow WMA support in iTunes on the mac. You can read this article for a little more help - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107958
If you need to ask for anything else clarrifying clearing up etc, dont be afraid to ask!
Hope that I may have been of further help

  • Buying a Mac mini for music

I'm buying a Mac mini in September - so I will have Snow Leopard - to use with the latest version of Logic and the latest version of Pro Tools and use for my college work and recording my band. I plan on using an M-Audio MobilePre USB, external hard drive and multitrack firewire interface for recording. Will I be able to use all of these devices simultaneously by using some kind of firewire hub without any noticable latency or driver/hardware problems? If it will not be as plug and play can somebody offer some kind of assistance? I am getting the 120GB model with a 2GB memory upgrade so I can get the maximum graphics memory as well. Thanks in advance.

I cannot answer your other questions, but I believe that you can confirm this with Apple, you can go ahead and make your purchase now and get a free copy of Snow Leopard when it is available. Apple has always had a free upgrade program for those who made recent purchases just before the upgrade release date.

As I said you need to:
You need to wipe the hard disk and reinstall the OS by booting into the recovery partition and reinstall the original OS via the internet. It will ask you to enter your ID

You can do it. This article from Macworld will be helpful to you:

    I recommend the "brute-force" method.
Just make sure you have your data backed up properly!

No idea if Windows will do it, but you can run Windows without Bootcamp & have OSX available at the same time, which should give you all the Monitors that OSX uses.

  • Should I buy I Mac mini?

I want to connect my computer (my only computer-macbook) to my TV LCD HD1080p 120hz. I know I can do this with HDMI cable (but may need HDMI to DVI to mini DVI connectors to connect tv to laptop - not sure). My laptop is working wirelessly with DSL modem using high speed DSL to connect to internet. I have an airport extreme base station that is not currently attached to anything.
I'm considering buying the mac mini to connect TV to internet instead of HDMI cables. I have very limited amount of space by my TV. I only have a cheap portable DVD player attached--no other equipment. Any thoughts? I also need a way to backup computer (time capsule maybe).

    MacMystie wrote:
Could you elaborate on connecting external drive to mac mini to back-up.
if you get an external HD (USB or firewire), just plug it into your Mac - time machine (TM) will ask you if you want to use this drive for backups.
see _*Time Machine 101*_ for information.
Which would do the backing up the mac mini or the external drive?
TM will back up the entire contents of your startup disk to the backup drive, unless you specify items to be excluded from backups.
see the _*Time Machine FAQ*_ user tip.
Would that be cheaper than time capsule
probably. of course, a time capsule (TC) is very convenient if you have e.g. a portable computer because you can back up wirelessly to it. the TC is also a wireless router (more precisely, a wireless router with a built-in hard drive).
however, all drives will fail eventually. there4, many users make bootable clones of their startup disks using e.g. _*Carbon Copy Cloner*_ in addition to TM backups.
