Is Mac book pro useful for Video Editing and VFX Work?
Hi Apple Team and Final Cut Pro Team,
I am Video Editor and Motion Graphic Artist. I do a lot of Video Editing work and I have to spend hours sitting in front of my Desktop and this is getting so hectic for me. So I'm thinking of buying a Mac book Pro. But before spending that much bucks, I need to be sure that I'm going for the best option available. below is the configuration I am planning to buy. Kindly suggest me whether this is the best option or not. If not, then Please suggest me your options.
Configuration:-
Screen:- 15.4 Inch retina display
Processor:- 2.5GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor (Turbo Boost up to 3.7GHz) with 6MB shared L3 cache
Ram:- 16GB of 1600MHz DDR3L onboard memory
Graphic Card:- NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M with 2GB of GDDR5 memory and automatic graphics switchingI think a laptop is the best choice of all except when you need more power than you can get in a laptop. Even then "Both" is a great choice. In this instance, this laptop is more powerful than the largest Mac Mini that exists today, a great choice. You can't carry around an iMac or Mac Mini. The Macbook Pro Retina is the best thing out there. Again, except when your needs are greater than it can provide.
Of course a good laptop can cost as much as a Mac Pro. They are fairly cost effective though when matched to a Mac Mini or iMac, although I did get my mini for under a thousand dollars with everything except monitors and external drive.. That Macbook Pro he's got is about $2,000..
All a laptop is is a Mac Mini with it's own screen. So you get the best of both worlds, plus portability. Add monitors and mouse and keyboards and touchpad and external drives when you choose, or simply walk or drive away with your computer in your hand anywhere you go. Try that with a Mini. A great advantage.
Location stuff.. etc etc etc. Talk about chairs and whatnot, I like to lay in bed on my back with my laptop on my belly. Super relaxing. I too, get tired of sitting in that chair all the time. I don't care how good it is. I'm a truck driver. I know all about sitting for hours on end. It becomes torture.
Both computers, that's the ticket.
All of them if we're rich enough.
$10,000 for a million dollars worth of equipment.
The price of a good used car. Fantastic machines.
On a side note, life without eating and drinking and ingesting stimulant drugs is a great life!

I've had issues with my iPhoto "not responding" and as a result I am attempting to save my photos to an external hard drive using iPhoto library Manager but each time I start the program it saves some, and then when it starts iPhoto, iPhoto then goes into not responding mode. Using mac book pro, iphoto 9.5.1, and maverick 10.9.2. I have completed all of the photo library first aid steps several times, but it makes no difference, iphoto eventually goes to "not responding." Initial issues started with Time Machine back ups stopping because of iphoto. Thanks......

If you're just trying to recover the photos you can do that much more simply:
Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look there for a Folder called 'Originals' or 'Masters'. (varies according to the version of iPhoto)
Your photos are inside - these are the originals as imported from your camera. -
Mavric doesn't support my 5 years old Big Screen Display, OR? Tried to connect my Mac Book Pro after installing Mavric, The Screen didn't work as before. I could only see the Desktop but not the movies for example.
<E-mail Edited by Host>It appears what happened is the installer though it was looking at a empty drive and just went ahead and installed.
I of course am assuming here you didn't use Disk Utility to format the drive first before installing, that would wipe out your files and programs for sure.
So what to do, what to do.
Well there is hope for you as long as the drive wasn't Filevaulted.
I'll explain. When a hard drive writes data for the first time to a drive, it starts at the very top and works it's way down.
When OS X was installed the first time, it was at the top of the drive, unless you upgraded then the upgraded OS X could have been written elsewhere.
Now when you just reinstalled OS X, the new OS went on the top of the drive, overwriting any data that was there previously, so what was there you have lost forever which is about 8GB or so. If it was the previous OS there, then your more in luck because only the old OS X was overwritten.
The remaining space on the drive still can have a copy of your files, provided it's not overwritten yet.
It's because when a hard drive deletes data or reformats, it doesn't remove the data off the drive or overwrites it immediately, it's just made so it's SPACE is available for new files to be written there.
So technically one can recover the deleted data off a non-encrypted/scrubbed hard drive with special software.
The way it does this is it reads the 1's and 0's of the files themselves, and through a lot of figuring out, can tell what that file is and what it belongs too.
So what you will have to do is this:
Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
or if you don't have the skills, then take it to a local PC/Mac tech and they can do a direct image of the drive and then you can run Data Rescue on it to rebuild your files. -
I have just tried to connect my Mac book pro to an LG Plasma TV via an iWires Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable. All I get on my TV is the Mac wallpaper and nothing else. I am missing something really silly, could anyone help please.

I plugged it in to my MB Pro and followed the very small writing that came in the package and got both audio and video going. You need to change the audio settings from within System Preferences on your Mac to select your TV as the audio output.
My concern is the data latency - do you experience a delay between moving your mouse on the MBPro and the TV displaying the movement? It is only a fraction of a second, but certainly enough to be annoying, especially in a cable as expensive as the iWire. -

It sounds like you are connecting your MacBook Pro with your television, but you are not getting additional options for your external display.
I found an article with steps to troubleshoot issues with displays. This article is for internal and external displays, so you can skip any steps referring to the internal display. I have a Mac Book Pro with 10.6.8 and want to back up my files using a flash drive. It says I did it but when I tried to check on my other Mac - an I Mac with 10.5.8, thedata does not seem to be there. I cant see photos, etc.. It shows the backup as a file and shows various system info. but there are no photos or other files shown.

MikeA PowerPC Mac, if that's what it is, won't be able to see an Intel Mac's formatted data. Also ExFat formatting is not supported by 10.6.3 or earlier. I would try viewing the backup on another Intel Mac with at least 10.6.4. If it isn't there, then the backup never really took place. I much profer a hard drive with Carbon Copy Cloner.

ThanksOk great - Im by no means a professional editor I have done a fair bit of video editing for online, presentation and awards videos in my previous jobs, and was advised by a previous trainer to get a mac and final cut pro as working of PCs and with Sony Vegas was time consuming and inefficient. I am buying a whole new set of equipment for my office and hope to get the department all trained up on it in the next year.
I will be learning to use the software but I will need it to make professional videos in the end so I don't think imovie would be appropriate? Thanks for the advice though - I will be prepared for the learning curve.
Any other advice on which Mac to get also much appreciated.

Also, you can use the PC version, but in this case, you will have to install Windows on a virtual machine or Boot Camp, so it's better to use the OS X version. There are alternatives for Office, like Apple iWork or LibreOffice, if you want to try them before -

Note that those models are completely sealed with no serviceable or upgradeable parts inside. So if you decide to bite the bullet, be sure to customize its guts to your heart's content from the get-go as no further change will be possible. This means CPU speed, amount of RAM and size of the solid state drive. Other external options, like the Superdrive, can be added later. -
When I start my mac book pro the screen flashes on and off and then a blue color before it open to the log in screen. Sometime a program will shot down buy it's self without me clicking the quit button. Help?!
If you keep getting a 'red' message it means that the HDD is faulty and will have to be replaced. You will have to format the new HDD in Disk Utility>Erase and then install the OSX and your data from Time Machine.

I think ive been in Safari clicking file, open files, downloads - and thats where it was grey. i just went from the 'Finder' icon and was able to download its doing it now. i think i need some tuition as i dont know if i wasi n the wrong place initially but i could see the downloads just not click on them.
