I may be on to somehting!! seriously

As many of you already know, the BLUE/GREY screen of death has effecting many mac mini users. i am one of them. i have tried safe mode single user mode everything booting from cd's everything. so i was trying to figure out how to back up my 54.3 gb of computer i hadnt already backed up in the first place. i went on my macbook and went to network and tada! my mac mini was letting me log on remotely. just to browse files and copy which is great for backing up, however that takes a very long time. now, is the reason for my computer found in a file that is either there or not there because i can modify all the files on that computer now. so wether i have to download a file here and then put it on or just delete i file i can totally control all of it. any help would be much appreciated! thanks sooo mcuh
-Scott

If you have a firewire cable, you can connect to your powerbook. When starting the mini, hold the T key which should let the mini act like an external hard drive which will then show up on your powerbook. From there you can copy all the files you need off of it.
I hope that helps.

  • Video problem??

    Hey everyone!
I am a noob here, but have a rather annoying problem...
I just installed an MSI 865pe Neo2 mobo(ms-6728 )and am having huge problems with video. For example; missing blocks and triangles of video and "tears" in the video. I am using a Radeon 9800 Pro, 1024 meg of Kingston DDR400, Western Digital 120 gig EIDE hard drive and a Sound Blaster Audigy Platinum EX sound card. Running Windows XP Home.
Nothing is overclocked and nothing is overheating. I have changed everything I can think of. The original video card was a Radeon 9700 Pro, but I had a warranty and exchanged it for the 9800 Pro, didn't fix the problem.
The original RAM was Corsair TwinX DDR500, changed to Kingston DDR400, didn't fix the problem...
    I swapped in a P4 2.66, didn't help so I put the P4 3.0 back in.
I am using a 550 watt psu and the cpu is water cooled and running at 88 degrees F under load. I updated the bios and all drivers. The only changes I made to the defaulted bios settings were to turn off the on-board audio and change the AGP size to 128 meg.
The only thing I can think of is maybe an IRQ problem??? Does this sound right? If so how would I change it?
Any help would be great! Let me know if I missed any info.

Does it happen in the BIOS?  Does it happen in Windows?  Does it happen in games?  Or all three.  You may be victim of a serious problem with ATi Radeon cards.  Read my following post.  It pertains to the P4C800/E/Deluxe boards, but you may find the same results with your setup too as it combines i865/875 and ATi!
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/e_service/forum/index.php?threadid=28414&boardid=10&sid=f250afa38518619a662861a8a173d2f1
Also Check this out as it may pertain to you also:
I may be onto a scam at Fry's electronics or it may be happening on a wider scale.  You buy a RETAIL BOXED Radeon9800 Pro 128MB.  Take it home and all seems fine.  But careful inspection of the part reveals the part number isn't even ATI!!!!  It's a part number used for OEM for companies includiong PowerColor and Visiontek.
What's worse is that further inspection of the FCC-ID and BGA memory chips shows that the card is not in fact a 9800 Pro 128, but an SE model that has been force-flashed with the Pro bios.  The card is still factory sealed, whatever the hell that means anyway.  While there is an ATI logo on the fan and on the board, the board's logo does not represent the POWERED by ACTUAL ATi or BUILT by ATi designation assigned to ALL TRUE ATi cards that are REALLY made by ATi and not 3rd party vendor.
The PN to watch for is 109-A07500-00  While it is a Pro model for Visiontek, it's also the Powercolor 9800 SE card that is masquerading as a 9800 Pro, but is nothing more than a pre-overclocked card using the same ATI flash Utility I have.  I flashed the ATi bios with the Powercolor SE bios and the glitches went away!  I then returned it and got a different one that had the same part number but had the Visiontek Pro FCC-ID and it works fine with the Pro BIOS.
This may also explain why some aren't able to overclock their 9800 Pro's EVEN with additional cooling as the card is already clocked to it's conceivable limit, as well as possibly explain why some 9800 Pros show severe graphics corruption even with the machine set at defaults with NO overclocking.  The card is OEM.  But somehow is finding it's way into ATi Retail boxed packages!!!  Retail ATI cards use a different part naming heirarchy.

  • Clipping Path Problem in CS4

First let me say that I'm am still new to this program and this was so much easier to do in Freehand.
When you use clipping mask in Illustrator to insert a JPEG into a shape it looks good until you see it on your desktop or open it in Photoshop, the border of the original size of the JPEG still shows up as white area, so I have to take the time open these clipped images in Photoshop just to crop out all that extra white area. I hope this is an easy fix or some simply step I'm missing?
I asked an old friend who uses Illustrator all the time and he said that's the way it has always been, clip a photo in Illustrator then open it up in
Photoshop to fix the clipping problem.
I have attached JPEG to help explain what I need and what's happening to the photos.
If anyone could help it would save me a TON of work.
    Thank You,
    Indyrebel

    indyrebel,
You may do the otherwise dirty destructive deed in Illy:
    With the Clipping Mask selected:
    1) In the Transparency palette/panel dropdown select anything but Normal (Multiply is fine);
    2) Object>Flatten Transparency (just leave it at 100% vector and other defaults).
This will rid you of the parts outside the Bounding Box of the path that shapes the Clipping Mask: a rectangle, even in case of other shapes such as ellipses, which does not hurt in your case.
If you do it to (especially stroked) vector artwork, it may hurt.
Obviously, the serious issue is with JPEG, not with PNG/GIF when transparency is applied; but it may be inconvenient in any case, having outlying parts selectable.

  • Can't restore from Time Machine using recovery partition

I came up with the idéa to put in an extra disk (SSD) into my mid 2009 13" Macbook Pro running Mountain Lion and create my own fusion drive.
In order to make sure not to lose all of my data I made sure to back up all my files using Time Machine so that simply could restore my entire system to the new drive.
Careful as one should be when about to wipe the entire drive on a computer I wanted to check so that I could make a proper restore from my TM backup disk. So I booted into recovery mode and choose to restore from Time Machine and then I selected my external drive, but then nothing. Where the list of my latest backups should be there was nothing.
I've tried to format the disk several times, changing disk permissions etc.
Does anyone have a clue what could solve this? Is it possible that it has something to do with the fact that I'm (probably) running 10.8.3 and that my recovery partition is 10.8.2?

Is the TM backup complete? When you Enter Time Machine, do you have snapshots going back in time?
See here for info on a problem Pondini has found with Time Machine that may have affected you:
UPDATED: Serious Time Machine bug on Mountain Lion (Updated)
You may just have to restart your TM backups to get those folders backed up.
If you do have that issue, please post at his link. He is trying to get enough background info to pass to Apple to solve the problem.

  • Superdrive problem (Late 2008 unibody Macbook Pro)

    Hi guys.
Basically I have had this problem for the last 2 months with it working once after I installed more RAM and opening up to find quite a dusty interior of my unibody MBP. I cleared out the dust installed the RAM, tried a DVD and it worked for the first time in a few months.
I then tried upgrading to Snow Leopard using the SL disc and it didn't work. I have a youtube video describing the issue and when I tilt the MBP on it's side I also get a clicking noise from the DVD superdrive. **I also have the exact same issue with a late 2006 model MBP**
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yIUkDOeRHlI
So here is the issue, I am not under warranty anymore and I was thinking of using compressed air to try and clear out dust that is perhaps lodged inside the drive, but maybe you guys have some better ideas or maybe if it's dead just order a new drive and swap it myself?

Compressed air is more likely just to redistribute the dust inside your drive than to remove any of it. A drive cleaning disc would have a more focused effect, and using one often solves what may seem to be a serious hardware problem. Pick one up at any Radio Shack or other electronics outlet.
Don't move or tilt your computer while a disc is spinning in the drive. Gyroscopic forces will cause the disc to scrape against internal parts of the drive, possibly damaging both.

  • HP M1536 PCL XL error or inverted PDF document

    Hello,
We're having some trouble with an m1536dnf All-In-One printer one of our clients recently acquired. The printer itself is connected to the network via ethernet cable and the computers that are printing to it either via cable or wireless. They are all using either Windows Vista or Windows 7.
They all seem to print just fine, with the exception of some PDF documents from some of their clients. These documents either do not print and we get a printout of a PCL XL error (when trying to print from Adobe Reader) or do print, but with black background and white text (Foxit Reader).
    The PCL XL error is:
    PCL XL Error
    Subsystem: KERNEL
    Error: ExtraData
    File Name: kerlib.c
    Line Number: 9024
    Things we've already tried:
    - updating both Adobe Reader and Foxit Reader
    - updating printer driver (unfortunately there is only one version available: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?os=4062&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=3974... )
    - updating printer firmware
    - reinstalling
    - installing via USB or printer sharing
    - saw a page ( http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&objectID=c00064499 ) describing our issue but could not find a way to switch to a PCL 5 driver
    - using the Generic driver found here: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=4157320&...
    - installed on a PC with Windows XP
It seemed at some point that a solution was to switch the printing resolution from 600 dpi to 1200 FastRes (both with EconoMode activated). However, after doing this another document showed up with the same problem. It may not seem like a serious issue to some, but with a bunch of users who have only basic knowledge about using computers issues like this can grow into big problems.
We also have little information about the PDF documents and their source, but as far as I could figure out at least most of them are generated by scanning from other multifunction printers.
We also took the printer back to our supplier and explained the issue. We could also demonstrate with a PDF file but could not leave the file with them due to privacy issues. They tried printing with the Generic driver but with no joy as the issue kept manifesting. If we send it to warranty they will most probably print a number of documents and say it's working OK (I would do the same in their position ), this is why I was wondering if any of the people here are experiencing the same issue with this printer or have any ideas on how to solve it.
    Thank you in advance,
    Eugen Sechel.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Right click on the Printer icon - In Control Panel
    Go to Printing Preferences.
    Go to Advanced Tab.
Then under Printer Features, go to Print Data Optimization and select it to “Optimise for Text and Vector”.
    Then click on OK.
Then try to print any Document and it will print fine without any PCL xxxx error.

  • WRE54G wireless extender problem with WRT600N wireless router

My Vista laptops work fine with the WRT600N router but not with the WRE54G extender. On the other hand my XP laptop works fine with the wireless extender so I know that both router and extender are working. Linksys tech support told me that the WRE54G is not compatible with the WRT600N, which is simply not true. With my XP laptop the signal goes from poor (5-10 Mbps) without the extender to excellent (54 Mbps) with the extender. Also, the lower blue light on the extender blinks indicating data transmission. I can access the setup page of the extender only with the XP laptop and wired desktop computers but not the Vista laptops. I suspect there is a Vista network setting that is the problem. I've turned off the firewall but to no avail. I've also switched between mixed mode and G-only, which made no difference. Anybody have any suggestions?

I have a secure wireless network (WPA). Perhaps my 4-5 year old XP laptop is the only laptop on the planet that works with the WRE54G-WRT600N combination. But I can assure all the doubters that this laptop categorically works flawlessly when I would otherwise be out of range without an extender. Good luck to spalaw. Please let me know if you are get your WRT160n to work with the WRE54G, especially you're able to connect with a Vista laptop.
    Hi
I am Afraid and wont be surprised if ya all people are nt able to use a N series Router with a G series Range Expander !
the Reasons is simple - N series is not BackWard Compatible as u check out the sources around. (Back Ward Compatible means compatible with the previous versions for its wireless Band , e:g - G band and B band.)
as far as my experience is concerned regarding the Range Expanders , me and my bud wasted a whole Week Configuring a WRT350N and WRE54G v3 , and it worked somehow on the seventh day  for an hour and Lost the connection again! Dayumm !
and we tried setting up with the same expander with WRT54GS v7.2 , it worked like a charm.
Conclusion : " WRE54G is a g series 2.4 Ghz expander which will work fine with all g series router though may not work with N Serious routers."
and if you really wish to Use something which can actually Extend the range for ur N routers signals , Better go for WAP4400N !!!!!!
And if someone still wish to run around , wanna try some tweaks (which i dont preferr )!
for WRT600N , just enable 2.4ghz band . as Range expander doesnt support 5 Mhz.
Use Only standard Channels . e.g : 1,9,3,11 .(No Wide and stuff.)
Try using WEP encryption first . (cause thats how we made WRT350N worked for a while. sighs)
At last , Wish u Luck.

  • Permissions error

It looks like I may have caused myself a serious problem...
I was cleaning up my hard disk and may have accidently erased something vital to playing my purchased music. When I try to play one of these songs, the window asking for my password pops up, then tells me how many machines I have authorized, and finally gives me this message:
"There was an error storing your authorization information on this computer. The required directory was not found or has a permissions error. Correct this permissions problem and try again, or deauthorize this computer if the permissions cannot be changed."
Is there anything I can do? Please help! Thank you.

First thing to do is try to correct the "permissions error"
    Close iTunes.
Go to the utilities folder, open Disk Utility, in the list of drives on the left, select the your hard drive and then select the repair permssions button. Let this do its thing - takes a couple of mins.
If you have two hard drives, repeat this process for the external hard drive on which you store your iTunes music.
Once this is done, open iTunes and try again. Hopefully this will work.
If this does not work, let us know and we can try something else.

  • Network Load Balancing for AFP Sharing

    Dear all,
Anyone can kindly teach me how can I configure network load balancing with 2 xserve?
Currently I success to bond 6 ethernet port with a virtual IP in a single machine and I have a link aggregation setup in my switch. It works fine.
How to configure 2 xserve with 6 ethernet port per each to have a single virtual IP?
my switch do not support link aggregation with a virtual IP to do the load balancing so I just can consider to do it in software level.
Anyone know whether OS Leopard/Snow Leopard can do it? Or any suggestion for 3rd party software can perform this?
    Thanks expert!
    Karl

It sounds like you need a load balancer. There's nothing built-in to Mac OS X Server that's going to support one virtual IP address shared across multiple physical servers.
Your problem, though, is likely to be one of throughput - I don't know any cheap load balancers that will sustain that kind of throughput, so you may be looking at some serious $$$$s.
There are some software-based load balancers that might be able to handle the load balancing side of things but many of them are designed around HTTP so might not work so well for other protocols.
In addition, the software load balancer is going to suffer the same bottleneck as your AFP server, but doubly so - two servers with 6 x 1gbps links each you have a theoretical limit of 12gbps.
To run that through a load balancer, the load balancer will need double that - 12gbps for the client-side, plus 12gbps for the server side. In reality you're probably looking at needing 10gbps interfaces and switches if you're really pulling that much bandwidth.

  • Online backup client eats CPU!

I have an online backup client from Mozy installed on my Mac Mini, and the actual backup process is scheduled to run daily at 23:00. The automatic backup is switched off. However, the backup client process is running at all times, and sometimes takes 50 - 60% of the CPU even when the scheduled daily backup is not being taken. This is not always momentary, and seems to continue for minutes, not just a few seconds. As you may imagine, this has a serious effect on the performance of the machine and is very frustrating.
An additional problem is that it seems impossible to stop the process from the Activity Monitor. It can be force quit, but restarts almost immediately. Repeating the force quit does not seem to help.
I have referred this to Mozy support several times, but they appear unable to resolve the issue. This is unfortunate, as the backup itself is useful, and works well. I am therefore wondering if there is anything that I can do within OS X to bring this process under control? I was thinking of possibly setting up a cron job to start and stop the backup client process?
Any thoughts and suggestions would be of interest and gratefully received!
    Nigel

    Thanks for that.
Unfortunately, it seems my thinking was not quite the best idea, as I have now received the following advice from Mozy Support:-
"I spoke with on of our senior support agents about the idea of quiting the Mozy client when not needed and he told me if you were to do that, Mozy wont know when files are changed and so wont back them up when you run a backup. Even when you aren't running a backup the Mozy client is watching all of the files on the machine and noting when a file needs to be backed up.
If you like, however, I can still provide you with the commands to effectively quit the Mozy backup daemon and launch it on demand. Alternatively, if the older Mozy client was better on resources and works for you, by all means use that version instead. To avoid having to re-select all of your files while changing the Mozy client version, when you select Uninstall from the MozyHome icon in the menubar, make sure the checkbox for Keep settings and log files is checked.
I know the Mozy Mac engineers are working towards reducing the resource footprint as much as possible, but Mozy is first committed to provide the most advanced and feature rich products. As such there will be a performance degradation as subsequent versions are released and ran on legacy hardware."
So switching the daemon off is clearly not a good idea; and the implication of the other comment is that Mozy don't care how much processor their system uses. Having researched elsewhere, it seems that this problem has been identified a couple of years ago, and Mozy don't seem to have made any serious effort to resolve it. From my perspective, I just want a reliable backup, the other bells and whistles are not interesting, and I would have thought that other users of a budget product would have similar requirements. However, Mozy seem content to leave us out in the cold. Fortunately, there are now other similar products, and a recent review in Macworld identified one called CrashPlan which seems to offer similar prices to Mozy (or slightly less).
For the time being I have reinstated an old version of Mozy that did not give this trouble, but will be looking seriously at CrashPlan, as reviews seem quite favourable.

  • Missing files in flash player 9 plugin debugger installer?

Hello all. I've been trying for some time to use the ExternalInterface.call method in flash, to no avail (see here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/7...ipt-javascript here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/8...rface-in-flash and here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/8...-firefox-linux) and now I'm trying to trace ExternalInterface.available. So far my best option seems to be FlashTracer for firefox, except that I have to have flash player 9 installed. I've removed my old flash player and downloaded the appropriate files (http://download.macromedia.com/pub/f...nux_dev.tar.gz). According to the readme included these are the steps for installation:
Installing the debugger plugin tar.gz using Install script:
o the debugger plugin is located at:
    ./plugin/debugger/install_flash_player_9_linux.tar.gz
    o Unpack the tar.gz file
o In terminal, navigate to the unpacked directory and enter:
    + $ ./flashplayer-installer
+ Click Enter key and follow prompts
except there's no file called flashplayer in the debugger directory. Anyone else ran into this? How can I install flash player 9 debugger on my Ubuntu system?

Hmmm.  I'm running into similar problems with flashplayer 10. Except I don't even have a directory to navigate to. I just posted about this... and no one was able to help you since May?  Man, that is seriously unencouraging!

  • Using chart colors with shapes

Does anyone know if it is possible to use chart colors(etched metal, wood, etc.) with "shapes" created in Pages '08?
    Thank you,

They are stored as images in /Library/Application Support/iWork '08/Content/Fills/ . To make it a little more difficult they are stored in different kinds of archives, but ctrl-click on for example the .sfctex files and choose "Show Package Contents" and you have access to the images. You can copy them from there and use them to fill graphics. Just make sure you do not remove them from the archives. I suspect that may damage your iWork installation seriously.

  • X220 black screen during boot

    Hello,
It's my first post, so welcome . I've been a lenovo thinkpad user for a month - X220 with SSD, W7 Professional, umts module and extended battery (if more information is needed I can send the full description) - and a strange bug occurs to my new laptop sometimes. After pressing the power button most of controls (camera, speaker mute, microphone mute) always make a flash. Next, most of the times (80-90%) the thinkpad logo shows up and the Windows 7 boots - that's ok. Unfortunately, about one in ten trials end in getting a black screen just after the flashes of the controls. The screen is enabled - it is just black. I must disable laptop (I don't have to keep the power button long - simple pressing is enough), and then, the second trial always succeed. It only occurs during the fresh, full boot - I didn't notice it after restarts, back from sleep or hibernation. I use docking stations, but it occurs in both ways - with or without docking station. It's not a huge problem to ignore that issue, but I'm worried that it may result in a more serious problem in the future. Any ideas and help will be appreciated.
    Best regards,

    Go to Solution.

    Hi Krzysztof,
I would check if the problem exists if you use the HDD which came with your notebook.
Also check if the SSD is attached firmly to the connector.
Also try a system check with ThinkVantage Toolbox.

If the problem persists with the native HDD like the SSD, then I would contact service.

  • What DO I need to output HD projects to DVD?

Trying to piece together how I will output HD footage to DVD. Have researched and paged through this forum and as a technophobe can't quite get it..I know FCP7 does have output to basic blu ray...I know toast and encore will get me there, but what do I need to actually burn???
I have DVD studio pro 4.2.1 which came with the Mac tower, if I get toast which is in my price range will that prepare an HD file to burn? Please help with the steps to output and what I need. The films will be shown on a theatre screen and for TV, computer viewing.
    Catherine

    It's not that easy.
You provided the target venue but not the output hardware. A Blu-ray player is useless if the projection system can't see the signal. Figure that one out first.
then you'll need to tell us what you think you mean by "HD." what codec, what format, what frame rate.
FCP6 and FCP7 wil handle most HD material but, depending on the source, often at the cost of performance or additional transcoding to get the material into the application. Toast, AKFAIK, comes with a manual that will tell you how to build Blu-ray, if that's what you need to do. The Share from FCP to Blu-ray seems to be workable but flawed. You may want to look more seriously at the Adobe suite of products for the PC if you will be using Blu-ray exclusively and charging admission.
