As long as you are buying content for yourself (you can't use your balance to gift content) then your account's balance should be used up first before any remainder is charged to your card.

I tried powering down and re-starting the iPhone (as suggested at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1275). This seems to have cleared the "...not connected to the Internet" problem, and iOS 6.1 is now in the process of downloading.

Ericsvaren please make sure the date range selected is sufficient to include the order for your font. I would also encourage you to make a local back up in case you need the font again in the future. My IPod Nano is synched to my ITunes library and shows up under Devices, but when I click on the Device name, all of the music is "grayed out" and I can't click on anything.
In order for this content to not appear grayed out, you need to enable the Manually manage music option from under the iPod's Summary tab in iTunes. Keep in minding that manually managing your iPod's contents is different from having content automatically sync to your device from iTunes. See here for more information.

What to do if the screen is stuck on the draft screen? I was writing a mail, saved it as draft, then later, was able to send it. However, the screen did not revert to the inbox page. The draft page seems to be hung or stucked. Safari and all others are working ok though.
I sent the draft to myself several times. That did not seem to be working, but when I opened Mail this morning, it has been sent all of the times and the Mail screen is no longer frozen.
