I put Tiger server software in my computer by mistake. Now nothing works.

All I have is a blue screen with one window only and nothing else. The one window wants the license number for the server software that Apple gave me when I was a developer. I have no license. I just want it off my computer. I was trying to put OSX Tiger update on my computer and inadvertently put this Tiger server software on. I can't do anything. It's not froze, there are just no places to click on. Nothing. Thanks

Open optical drive and insert install DVD. If will not open, hold in power button shut down. Then upon startup hold down mouse until tray opens, insert DVD, immediately close tray and hold down option key. Use install disc to erase and install fresh.
Is that a help? Probably not, as you would erase your data:(

I have been trying to update my software and since I changed my password, nothing works. I am now updating again and don't know what to do. I am prompted to contact the Itune store and get this song and dance to get here and still the software such as purchased apps hang but don't update or mount.

    What password?

  • Updated Software and now nothing works

I just recently done a software update to my Macbook Pro and when it had finished and I went to use the likes of Mozilla or Safari, they wouldnt work. Tried to use the system update again, it wouldn't work. So basically nothing will open at all. Anyone got any suggestions as to what I could do so it will work?

Did you restart your Mac after the installs, and repair permissions?
    Some general advice on updating:
It is worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first to an external hard disk. Ideally you should always have a bootable clone of your system that enables you to revert to the previous pre-update state.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
    2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
    3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site.
The Combo updater of Leopard 10.5.8 can be found here:
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Full details about the 10.5.8 update here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3606
More information on using Software Updater here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.5.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.5.7 to 10.5.8. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
    Now proceed as follows:
    4. Close all applications and turn off energy saving and screensaver.
    5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
    7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
    8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious! In fact a second restart can be recommended.
    9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a week or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 4.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up. If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party add-on.
Additional tips on software installation here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
    • /Library/InputManagers
    • ~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).

Hi, I recentry reinstalled Windows 7 on my HP 584037-001 laptop due to some pretty bad computer problems.  The problems I was having prevented me from doing a back up.  I successfully reinstalled windows but now none of the drivers are working including the internet, sound, usb ports, etc.  I do not have any back up disks that came with the computer.
How I can fix this problem?  Is it possible to download the drivers from somewhere and copy and paste them on my computer?  Where on earth do I find they these drivers??
    Thanks!

    Hi:
Below are the links to the drivers you need...
    SMBus controller:
Here is what you need to do for the smbus controller...
I have zipped up and attached below under Attachments, the raw smbus controller driver files for you to unzip and manually install.
    Download and unzip the file.
Go to the device manager and click on the smbus controller needing drivers.  Click on the driver tab.  Click on Update Driver.
Select the Browse my computer for driver software option and browse to the driver folder that you unzipped.
Make sure the Include Subfolders box is checked and the driver should install.  Then reboot.
USB3:  Install both of these and reboot.

  • Updated software, now nothing works

Yesterday, I was prompted to instal a software update, which I did. Everything seemed fine, and I closed (did not turn off) my macbook. Today, when I opened my laptop, everything was frozen. I force quit. Turning my laptop back on, I get a gray screen with a blinking floder with a question mark. When I try to follow the instructions from the Apple support page for this issue, it doesn't work - it seems like there are no startup disks on my computer at all. I have no idea what's going on. Someone please help; I have a month's worth of data I can't lose. Thanks in advance!
NOTE: I'm not sure what operating system I have (I realize I sound completely incompetent). I bought my laptop at the end of December 2011; it's OS X Lion, but beyond that, I'm not sure).

I rebooted like you suggested, then clicked Disk Utilities and Continue. The only drives available are disk0 and Mac OS X Base System; I can't click on Repair Disk on either of them. Not quite sure where to go from here.

Please help me iv just upgraded to tiger and now none of my programs will open they crash on start-up, and also when i restart i get a little box with a blue globe inside it. then it goes to the unhappy face in a folder icon, then eventually it starts up. Please help me im buggerd without the mac.

    Hi Andy!
What size is the Hard Drive, and how much space is avaialble?
How much RAM is installed, and is it original or added?
Did you use a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, to upgrade?
Did you do an Archive & Install, preserving User settings & preferences, installation, and if so, is the Previous System folder still on the HD?

  • Tried software upgrade now nothing works

I bought a new 12" G4 powerbook a couple of weeks ago and yesterday i let the automatic software upgrade do its thing...
it downloaded quite a few of the updates but then the updater crashed with the options to report, reopen or cancel. I tried all three at some point during the day but the report and cancel were the only ones to work.
Then i noticed that ALL applications I tried to open (other than msn messenger which works fine) also crashed with the same message to reopen, report etc.
I dont know the workings of a mac inside out to be able to work out whats happening. I looked at various logs and all they said was that this application or that application crashed.
I looked for a restore to previous set up type option (like...dare i say.... windows has) but couldnt find anything like that either.
(im currently on my old powerbook with half the keyboard missing and a screen that wont stay up)
Does anyone have any idea what happened? Will i have to reinstall everything to its original basic set up or what?

The first thing I'd do is get a Firewire hard drive and Prosoft Data Rescue. At least that will make an effort to recover your data, without writing anything to disk. Once that is done, an Archive and Install may be an option as scb suggests, though there are some gray screen troubleshooting steps suggested in this article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106464
The reason I suggest doing the Data Rescue first, is there is no way of knowing how severe the corruption is on the drive, and any writing to a drive in a temperamental state may overwrite already poorly allocated data. Data Rescue usually can see through that mess and grab out all the important data you may want to backup.

  • Sync Tiger Server (10.4) mail with Lion (10.7) mail

I made a clone of my Tiger Server drive and managed to upgrade it to Lion Server. While I was upgrading to Lion Server the Tiger server continued to host email. I have everything working on the Lion Server upgrade. Open Directory is functioning and users are able to log into their accounts and access email received up to the date I cloned the drive. However, email is still being hosted on the Tiger Server. Is there a way to sync email from Tiger Server to Lion Server?
    Thanks!

    Thanks Brian,
    It's a 2 x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon Mac Pro.
I do have a spare partition on the drive, would it be possible to install 10.6.8 on that parition, and then upgrade to 10.8 leaving my original Tiger Server intact (temporarily?) I've also heard you can aquire 10.8 on a thumb drive at the Apple Store, if I went went that route could I skip the 10.6.8 install?
I don't mind setting up my services again, no real big need to migrate existing user profiles, there's only 1/2 dozen or so. It would be nice to set it all up and then test it out, and be able to revert back to Tiger if I can't get things configured easily on the new server or encounter surprises.

I attempted to de-activate the adobe programs from my system in order to activate them on another computer now NOTHING works on any system and I have a deadline looming. PLEASE HELP

    Hi Hammette Art,
    Welcome to Adobe Forum.
You can deactivate it in two ways.
    1. Launch any of the CC application and go to Help>Sign Out(Adobe ID)
For CS6 apps Go to Help>Deactivate
For CC version apps it has changed from Help > Deactivate to Help > Sign Out

  • Basic tiger server printing to network printer issues - HELP :)

Hi everyone, Im after some help as im running out of ideas, here is my basic setup: (sorry i have rambled on a bit
current 192.168.0.x network that has ADSL, PC's HP Laserjet 5Si network printer.
Connected to that is my Tiger server with 2 lan ports, one is connected to that network and the other connected to a switch where I run all my macs - the server is a basic file and software update server.
macs connected to the server get a 192.168.2.x address and can access the internet and each other etc - all is happy.
now - I had my personal macbook pro connected directly to the first network to access the printer, works fine and fairly quickly but was unable to access the server (i imagine because the server thinks i was from the big bad internet from the .0.x range
once i connected to the other network served by the mac server i could access all the files fine but printing would not work, so i thought I would have the server access the printer as it has access to both networks and just share it to the local macs.
well when i add it and put in the 192.168.0.71 address it connects and loads the GIMP HP5si driver, but when it tried to print it takes up to 5 mins to show that its finished, but only sometimes does the printer actually fire up, and the times it did it never printed the whole page...
The only thing i can think of is that the server is trying to print to the .0.x address'ed printer but using the .2.x address range, possibly confusing the systems.., im not too familiar with all the firewall/NAT settings ,i think i have everything turned off, but its still not working..
If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated, im not sure what else to do.
    Thank you for your time

This sounds more like a protocol or a driver issue rather than an addressing issue. Which protocol is being used to connect to the printer? You mention the GIMP driver gets loaded, which I read that it's an automatic function rather than you having to manually browse to the driver.
Also, I would look at trying the Gutenprint drivers from Sourceforge rather than the included GIMP-Print.
The other thing would be to check the cups error log on the server. It could give some clues as to why the spool file is taking so long.

  • Local KDC (LKDC) relating to Leopard clients logging into Tiger Server

This is a follow-up to my posting on this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5982070#5982070
Pursuing the problem I had when I upgraded to Leopard, I found it odd that trusted binding to Tiger OD from a Leopard client created a funny computer entry in the Workgroup Manger (WGM). Previously when using trusted binding from a Tiger machine to a Tiger server, one entry would be created. And Logging in as an OD user worked every time for me. However, it appears that under 10.5.1 Kerberos has changed significantly in that it is now being used extensively through the Leopard OS for Peer-to-Peer applications. This may account for the screwed up Computer account entries in WGM when a 10.5.1 client binds to 10.4.11 Server using trusted binding. The giveaway clue to this is the LKDC:SHA1 entry created in the WGM computer record (usually 3 seperate records for 10.5.1 instead of the normal single record with a Tiger client). My question is this:
Are there any changes that can be performed via command line on the 10.5.1 client to mimic the old 10.4 client Kerberos configuration without pervasive Peer-to-Peer use of Kerberos? Is is a config setting for the mit.kerberos file? Could it be as simple as flipping a switch to get the older more compatible Kerberos config of a 10.4 Tiger client? Can I dump the Local KDC present in Leopard, and get back to the good old days of non-local KDC under Tiger?
    http://www.afp548.com/article.php?story=LeopardServerReview-LocalDirectory
    "The Local KDC
Yes, you read that right, the local KDC. All Leopard client systems will now create a Local KDC for use with peer to peer file sharing.
While this isn't even as close to as scary as it seems, it is a topic worthy of at least a separate article, if not a whole series. I put on my thinking toque and sat in my thinking corner for a while on this, and I've not yet been able to come up with a reason for why having a KDC on every machine is less secure than how 10.4 did things. Having said that, though, I fully understand how this can seriously freak out your network security team as they don't quite grasp all the ins and the outs of this. Combine this with Back to My Mac, another article that's forthcoming, and you have a very interesting collection of some "sleeper" features in Leopard.
So, in a nutshell, a Local KDC, the LKDC, is created when 10.5 is installed. Local users will get LKDC authentication authorities allowing them to get Kerberos tickets and use that for single sign on to all the services hosted on that client system. Kerberos is supposed to be only used when you use Bonjour to discover the other machine. So primarily in peer to peer on the same LAN cases.
It works, you can see this for yourself. Screen share to another machine as a local user by picking the machine out of the sidebar in the Finder. You'll have to enter in your password the first time, but after that you can close out of that screen sharing session and restart it without having to re-enter your password. You can also see the ticket in the Kerberos.app, still buried in /System/Library/CoreServices."

    Eric,
Thanks so much for your thoroughness and assistance. I think we have decided, for now, to forgo the 10.5 clients attaching to the 10.4 server because of too many intermittant issues. Similar machines on 10.5 gave different results. And at this point, our client is very skittish about the process working at all. I think we need more testing and that is the directon we'll take for now.
Here are some of our results:
I did find information on afp548 regarding the 10.5 preference. It was specificall referenced in this article:
    http://www.afp548.com/forum/viewtopic.php?forum=18&showtopic=16064
Clearing the check box on the 10.4 server under OD > Settings > Security "Require password change on new user login" did solve the memory issue that kerberos was having. After clearing the setting, I:
    * deleted all binding references at the server (WGM > Accounts > Lists > All Computers
    * Deleted the bindings at the client and the the LDAP server references in Directory Access
    * Restarted the machine
    * Reconnected the LDAP server, Rebind the machine
    * Check the LDAP search in issuing id <username> in Terminal
    * OPen System PReferences > Accounts > Login Items, the preference is there!
    * Yeehah
Oh, but the user still can't login in that machine. Uhm, why? I have no idea. I take a new machine, 10.5.1, no login accounts except a local admin, and no that user still cannot login. Other users, no problem, but not that user.
Take a new system, 10.4.11, set up the binding, the LDAP server, try to log in that same user: works every time. Ugh.
So of course, I think there is something up with that user, but nothing in logs gives an indication of what is going on. That I can find. THis is after 10 hours of testing and trying. Needless to state, the client is frustrated, and so am I.
You know, we do have one 10.5.1 client laptop that did work. After lots of binding and rebinding, it just somehow starting working as expected. But, the reason that we're sticking with 10.4 clients for now is that machine will not respond to password change mandates. I select that user in the WGM, check the "require password change on next login" and nothing happens on their end. They are not an admin, I have reset their account more times than I can count, and so I expect there are more non-working items with 10.5.1 clients and 10.4 server that will get me. It needs more testing for now.
So, back to your message, I haven't tried the SSL certificate, but I will give that a try.
In general, for your network, how are your laptop users configured? As mobile users? Network homes? Or Local homes?
Thanks again for your help. I really appreciate it.
