I have a sony vaio, but the same thing happen to my husbands compaq presario, I cannot even get to the default programs on his.
thank you

To do a clean install, you need to back up all your data to external media, and your product Keys to external storage.
You can use Belarc Advisor for the Keys - www.belarc.com
The best bet is to use the proper Recovery media for your machine, then install an up-to-date AV, and then the Windows Updates.

    Hi Alex!
    JAVA: CLEAR APPLET CACHES
Many of the "Virex", "Possibly Infected" & "Non-Critical Errors" can usually be tracked down to the JAR cache folder, which stores Java Applets. Possibly the occasional Trojan as well.
Browser Cache cleaning and third party utilities, do not seem to eliminate them. Nor does "Virex". I don't know about ClamX.
They can, of course be manually trashed, but here's another way to get rid of those pesky little buggers!
HD > Applications > Utilities > Open the Java folder > Double click THESE to open:
Java 1.3.1 Plugin Settings Click "Cache" tab > Click "Clear JAR Cache"
Java 1.4.2 Plugin Settings Click "Cache" tab > Click "Clear"
    Good Luck!

These errors typically occur when security software interferes with the restore and update process. Use the steps to troubleshoot security software issues to resolve this issue. In rare cases, these errors may be a hardware issue. If the errors persist on another computer, the device may need service.
Also, check your hosts file to verify that it's not blocking iTunes from communicating with the update server. See the steps under the heading "Blocked by configuration (Mac OS X / Windows) > Rebuild network information > Mac OS X > The hosts file may also be blocking the iTunes Store." If you have software used to perform unauthorized modifications to the iOS device, uninstall this software prior to editing the hosts file to prevent that software from automatically modifying the hosts file again on restart.

  • What happened to the infected files found by ClamXav?

I ran a scan with ClamXav and found 15 infected files - Trojan and Phishing. I was told to rerun the scan with Quarantine turned on if I wanted to remove the files, which I di. The second scan found no infected files. I ran a third scan and still no infected files. Where are the infected files. Did ClamXav delete them? If so, what damage has been done to the mailboxes? If all the infected files were in Trash, does that make the situation better?

    Hangar 8 wrote:
The first time I ran the scan ClamXav found the 15 infected files and quarantine was not turned on. There was a message to turn quarantine on if I wanted to remove the files
Actually, the message says "You can either deal with them yourself, or scan again with the preferences set to move them into a different folder."
I much prefer to deal with each file individually, rather than allow ClamXav to move anything, especially if I'm scanning e-mail content for malware or phishing. That prevents damage to my mailboxes and also allows me to check to see if the phishing e-mails are correct or false positives. In my case, almost all the phishing e-mails were incorrectly identified as such.  As long as it doesn't find too many files I simply control-click / right-click on the identified file, select "Reveal In Finder" for e-mail, "Delete" for files that I'm certain are malware and "Quarantine" for those I'm not sure of and what to research.
at the time, I thought removing them was a good idea. So I reran the scan with quarantine turned on but it found no infected files. ClamXav must have deleted the infected files when I closed the program after the first scan. Is that what it is supposed to do? If so, were they placed in a folder and which one?
When you turned quarantine on in the ClamXav preferences, there was also a button to "Set quarantine folder..." after which it should have listed the path to that folder under "Quarantine infected files to:". In that same preference is another button which will "Open quarantine folder".
All that being said, I was unable to repeat your results. I ran the first scan which identified the test virus, turned quarantine on and the test virus stayed where it was first found.  I ran a second scan where it was again identified, the status said "Quarantined" and when I opened the quarantine folder it was there. ClamXav takes great pains to exclude your quarantine folder, so anything that was moved to it will not be subsequently identified. So if those files are not in your quarantine folder, I have no idea where they went. You can look in your trash can, but they should not be there either.
If you remember the names of any of the files you can try finding them using Find Any File (Spotlight will probably not find them).
Lastly, I would encourage you to take future questions like this to the ClamXav Forum where you will find answers to most questions (although not all of this one) and maybe even get faster answers than here.

  • Ran Avast boot scan. Several files quarrantined as infected by a (windows) file - win32:hotbar_be [pup].

My laptop has been running slow and sometimes freezing up. I ran an Avast scan and it found an infected file which I moved to chest. It recommended I run a boot scan. During the boot scan i had several Firefox extensions and plugins 'moved to chest'. All were "infected by win32:hotbar_be [pup]". My suspicion was aroused that Windows might be causing problems for Firefox extension /plugins. I have had several attempts by windows to get me fix my problems with plugins that could cause my computer to slow down or crash. Is this legit? If Firefox plugins are causing a problem with windows, how can I fix it?
    Thanks

    Hi,
It would also be a good idea to post in a dedicated security forum. You can also post there regarding malware removal live USB/CDs which would be sufficient and useful in a lot of situations:

  • I ran a System Restore on my Windows XP notebook and now iTunes won't open. It says something about my "iTunes library being created in a new version of iTunes".

I ran a System Restore in my Windows XP notebook and now iTunes will not open. The message: The file "iTunes Library.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes. What can I do about this?

Depending on the iTunes settings and where the music is downloaded from, by default, it is stored in C:\...\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\. So, if you need to backup, that would be the folder you want to grab.
However, uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes doesn't affect that folder, so if you have to remove and reinstall it you should not lose any music (although backups are always a good idea).
In reinstalling, I'd recommend opening your Control Panel and going into Add or Remove Programs, and removing the following:
    1. Apple Mobile Device Support
    2. Apple Software Update
    3. Bonjour
    4. iPod for Windows (if it exists)
    5. iTunes
    6. QuickTime
Then, restart the computer, and download/install iTunes from http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/. This should ensure that the appropriate version of all related software is installed, and everything is in sync.

  • Topology Services Applet error: "No JRE found in configuration file."

Is there an issue with IE7 and opening up Topology Services? Or can someone guide me in fixing this error message?
I'm using LMS 3.1 and had uninstalled all of my Java versions and installed jre-6u5-windows-i586-p_withjacorb.exe on my client. However, when I clicked the Topology Services link I would get the Java splash window for a bit and then nothing happened (the next two applet windows wouldn't load).
When I tried to launch Topology Services from another box using IE6, everything worked fine. I tried the same steps above on another box with IE 7 and that worked fine too.
So I tried a few installs and uninstalls of different Java versions and found that if the version was other than 6_5, I'd get the Java splash screen with the first applet window telling me I had the wrong version. When I'd uninstall all Java versions again, reboot, then install the correct Java version, I wouldn't get anything past the first Java splash screen. After a few attempts at this, I now receive the following error when I click on Topology Services, "Bad installation. No JRE found in configuration file."
How can I get to this configuration file on my client to let it know that I do indeed have the right version of Java on my box?
    --Jeff

Campus 5.1 works just fine with IE 7.0 and JRE 1.6.0_5. It sounds like this particular client may be in bad shape. Typically, I recommend one uninstall all versions of Java from a client, reboot, then install the one version that comes with LMS. I also recommend that for IE, one adds the LMS server as a Trusted Site in IE. You might also try disabling anti-virus software temporarily to see if that helps.
For Campus 5.1, you will also need to open TCP ports 42342 and 43242 from client to server.
It may be that this client is in such bad shape that it will need to be rebuilt to get Java working correctly.

  • Why is it that every udate of my iPhone software do I get the error message on my laptop: AppleSyncNotifier.exe - Entry Point Not Found The procedure enrty point xmlTextReaderConstName could not be located in the dynamic link library libxml2.dll

Each time I update the software on my iPhone4 I get the following error message on my lap top: AppleSyncNotifier.exe - Entry Point Not Found The procedure enrty point xmlTextReaderConstName could not be located in the dynamic link library libxml2.dll
I go on line to find a solution, but it must be a common problem, why has apple not corrected yet?

This is the fix I got from discussions and it worked for me.  It is copied below.  I just did the manual fix which I have underlined. Good luck! Regards, Belle.
This can occur because libmxl2.dll is not in your C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support folder.
There have been some issues with this and other dlls not being in the right place (or not being everywhere they should be) since the 10.3.1.55 iTunes update.
However, I note that the 10.4 iTunes update is now out - surprisingly quickly - so try installing that, rebooting, and see if your issue is solved.
If it isn't, though, here's the manual fix:-
With Windows Explorer, navigate to your C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support folder.
Copy the libmxl2.dll that you should find there, navigate to the nearby Mobile Device Support folder, and Paste it in there also.
Reboot and see if all is well.
I actually had the issue with SQLite3.dll, and the above fix worked for me (I found it in an April 2010 posting!).
I passed on the fix as above for the similar issue with libmxl2.dll to someone who had exactly your problem, and he reported that it fixed it for him.
