The first thing you should do after acquiring a used computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. How you do that depends on the model. Look it up on this page to see what version was originally installed.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard installation disc, which you can get from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller — not from eBay or anything of the kind.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the gray installation discs that came with it. If you don't have the discs, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To boot from an optical disc, hold down the C key at the chime.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, it should boot into Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime.
Once booted from the disc or in Internet Recovery, launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive — not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive, which is what you should do.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. When the installation is done, the system will automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
You should then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. If you want to upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, buy it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the previous owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed — you have to repurchase them.

  • X1900XT not working in late 2006 Mac Pro.

Hi, I'm new here, just created my Apple ID to post this problem on the forum for some info and advice
I have a late 2006 Mac Pro which I ordered from Apple.com with the ATI X1900XT. I had the standard 20", LCD Apple Cinema Display which doesn't work anymore.
Someone lent me a Phillips 190S LCD monitor to work meanwhile with my Mac Pro. So when I used that monitor I also upgraded from Tiger to Snow Leopard (can't remember how, if first Leopard and then Snow). It worked so so... some weird pixels flashing and sometimes the monitor image would freeze up, I'd shut down the Mac from the Power Button and start it again and keep on working like that. Until one day, image froze up, did the routine start-up but no image would show up on the monitor.
I've already sent my Mac with a certified Mac tecnician, he told me the ATI X1900XT doesn't work anymore (along with 2 DIMMS, I know one was "fried", the other came as a surprise to me because the Mac seems to boot OK, initial Mac "chime" sounds and riser cards don't "light" a problem) and I need to buy another video card. I asked him for more options on video cards but he tells me he'll only assure success from his part if I buy the same ATI X1900XT model through him with his provider ($350+$20 shipping, I live outside the States).
    My questions are:
    - What other choices for video cards do I have with a late 2006 Mac Pro nowadays? (Not counting the nVidia 7300 GT, the Quadro FX 4500 or "flashed" PC cards. I read an old post https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2012005?start=15&tstart=0 in this forum on a similar topic but seems people were using Leopard, not Snow or Lion).
    - Is the use of a non-Mac monitor relevant to the detereoration of an ATI X1900XT card or any original Mac video card? I ask this because if I buy the same card again, I want to know if I can keep using the same Phillips monitor or buy a non-Mac monitor without worrying that it'll do something to the video card.
Thanks in advance for any advice and info

I have the same mac pro 1.1 as you do.  I bought it with the ATI X1900XT video card and it lasted only like 2 years , then the screen became garbled, pixel flashing,,,
I replaced it with ATIRadeon HD 3870,  it has been working fine since then but that card is a little noisier than the X1900.
I think you can also use some cards like this one from macsales.   You should just check that page and see what you find.

I am the administrator of my MacBook Pro, which I share with my kids. One of them forgot his password, so as the admin I changed it for his account, but  when I try to see his account, it says I need to provide the keychain password. How can i get it? I have no idea how to sort this out...

First, make sure caps lock is not on.
You must back up all data before continuing, unless you've already done so. If you need to back up but can't log in, ask for instructions.
If the user account is associated with an Apple ID, and you know the Apple ID password, then maybe the Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
Otherwise*, boot into Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window opens.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Follow the prompts to reset the password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.
You should now be able to log in with the new password, but your Keychain will be reset (empty.) If you've forgotten the Keychain password (which is ordinarily the same as your login password), there's no way to recover it.
*Note: If you've activated FileVault, this procedure doesn't apply. Follow instead the instructions on this page:

  • How can I add wifi & bluetooth to late 2006 Mac Pro

I have a dual 2.66 Xeon Mac Pro purchased new in December 2006. I wanted to add the airport wifi and bluetooth card but have been told by the technical line that Apple no longer makes these. They suggested I would have to pursue a third party solution which I find remarkable.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to go about this or practical experience in doing it?
    Cheers,
    Gord

Look on eBay or search Google. You can check ifixit.com to see if they carry the part. You should be able to find online tutorials via Google on how to install it. Some disassembly is required.

  • Mac Pro 8 core - great, but not great... Any ideas please?

    Hi Guys,
Firstly, let me say I'm Apple Certified in FCP so I'm not a newbie, however I am having a hard time coming to terms with my current situation.
My G5 Quad appeared to be struggling on some basic (3 layers of text) real time stuff in PAL DV, and I was lucky enough to be able to upgrade to a Mac Pro 8 core 3.0GHz last week. "That will sort my stuttering problems" I thought...
No it doesn't. Any new basic text (Boris) or any dissolve makes the playback jump, possibly worse than the G5 did. Aaaaargh! Anyone got any ideas why this shouldn't play back a dream?
Also, does anyone know why the Blackmagic never appears as an option in the Effect Handling section of System Settings?
Hope you can all help soon.
p.s. I have not got any media on my startup disk, and the second disk is almost empty...

Assuming your Scratch Disk is on the 2nd drive inside the Mac Pro, then let's see if that drive might be under-performing. Download Kona system Test v3 from http://www.aja.com/html/supportkona3swd.html and install it.
Run the test on both drives, using the largest file size. Please report back on the read & write numbers you get on each drive.
BTW, journaling should make no discernible difference on a SATA 3Gbps hard drive, and you most definitely SHOULD enable journaling on your boot volume. It doesn't matter either way for the media drive, but if you do not enable journaling for the boot volume, it will bite you in the butt someday. Trust me on that.
Besides, journaling takes zero action on a disk read, which is what you are having problems with. It takes a tiny bit of time for the write heads to write the data to the journal, but not enough to make any real difference for your extremely speedy Mac Pro. The location of the journal file is on the outermost tracks on the platters, the fastest ones.

  • 2006 mac pro 2.66 in need of an airport card!

Hi Does anyone know which airport card or cards, as well as bluetooth, will work in an 2006 mac pro? I have read that MA688Z/B is the proper card. I have tracked down a MA688Z/A: http://www.macproonline.com/Mac-Pro-Tower/Mac-Pro-Tower-Parts/Mac-Pro-Tower-667M hz/Apple-AirPort-Extreme-p5636018.html
Found this on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Apple-Airport-Extreme-Bcm94321mc-802-11n/dp/B004OHOTJS/ref =sr13?ie=UTF8&qid=1300723614&sr=8-3
Can anyone verify which airport card to use for a 2006 mac pro model?

    Hi cmotta12,
You might find this thread (Purchasing/Installing Airport Extreme card for Mac Pro 1,1 (2006) of interest:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=12830939#12830939
One important thing to note is that the official Apple Airport Card Wireless Upgrade Kits come complete with the two micro screws which are needed to install the card.
These screws are not readily available, so ensure that they are included when you buy your Upgrade Kit.

  • Late '06 Mac Pro w/ Leopard Shutdown & Sleep Problems

I recently did a clean install of Leopard on a brand new hard drive for my Late '06 Mac Pro. I currently have all updates installed, and the system is running very fast and very stable. But!
I've been experiencing two problems over the week I've had Leopard installed, and I would just like to know if other MP users are sharing these as well...
    1. Half the time I wake the computer from sleep, the fans blast off for about 10 seconds before the desktop is shown. Sometimes when the computer goes to sleep, via Energy Saver, my hard drives keep spinning.
    2. Shut down takes an excruciatingly long time. My typical shut down lasts around a minute to a minute and a half.
I've read around and have seen a few problems like this, but I want to know if there are a larger majority of people with a Mac Pro who are experiencing either of these in Leopard.
It's not such a nuisance, being I don't have to wait for shut down and I can wait around a few seconds when waking up the computer. Though, here's to hoping 10.5.3 or a firmware update can fix these two issues!
Message was edited by: Anthony Jr.

I had re-start from sleep problems on my '06 MP. Root cause was NG ram. Replaced wit hApple ram from OWC.com and it fixed the issue. That ram caused other issue such as frequent spinning beachball and just the feel was not right.
What can you try? i'd suspect ram but first any attached devices such as a 7 port Belkin USB hub which messed with deep sleep on mine and was replaced with a CyberPower USB hub.
Also do a smc power manager reset. Just unplu everything and wait a few mins the attach Apple keyboard and mouse power up and see what happens. One thing at a time.

  • I replaced my hard drive on my late 2006 Macbook Pro.  I tried to do a reinstall of Tiger 10.4.5 from my start up disk.  I get an error that states "can't install on this computer." HELP

I replaced my hard drive on my late 2006 Macbook Pro.  I used the disk utility and erased the drive and formatted it to OSX Journaled .  When I tried to install the OS from the start up disks I got the error "Can't install on this computer.  I have verified the drive.
I have used Super Duper to copy my old drive to my new drive.  But I wanted to do a fresh install.  How do I go about this?

Did you do the Super Duper clone before you tried to reinstall the OS? If so, the original install disc is likely earlier than 10.4.11, and that may be why you are getting the message.
When trying to reinstall the OS, did you select the "Archive and Install" option? If not, you might try that. Here's a link that might help:

  • Is there a way to install boot camp on a 2006 Mac Pro running Lion?

Lion comes with Boot Camp 4, which supports Windows 7+. The 2006 Mac Pro however only supports Windows Vista, which requires Boot Camp 3.
    I can't find a download link for Boot Camp 3, only 4 and 5.
    Does anyone have an idea?

It is on your original dvd that came with your computer. See the Boot Camp System Requirements located here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5634

  • Is FCPX usable with late 2007 Mac Pro's with ATI HD3870 (or OEM graphics cards?

I have a late 2007 Mac Pro with an ATI Radeon HD3870 Mac&PC (3870 ROHS 512mB) graphics card.  This card is wupposed to be OpenCL hardware capable.  Will it work with FCPX?  I'm not aware of any current enhanced graphics cards that will work with that vintage MacPro. I'm currently using FCP7, but has anyone tried this system with FCPX?

    nfoo wrote:
According to Apple it is compatible.
Just go ahead and try to buy it: the App Store will detect if your card is compatible and will refuse to let you buy FCPX if it isn't. So there's no risk.
If you want to upgrade your gfx card, the Ati 5770 and 5870 are both compatible with all Mac Pro Models.
Apple says no. The Store says mid 2010 for 5770.
I just got confirmation from someone on the LAFCPUG forum that they have MacPro 1.1 (2006) with 5770 installed and they were able to purchase FCPX.

  • Boot camp on 2006 mac pro

I am trying to set up my 2006 Mac Pro 1,1 to run Win XP with boot camp. I used the original Tiger install disks to put OS 10 (10.4.11 after software updates) on the machine.
Now I want to run Boot Camp assistant, but can't find it in the Utility folder, and furthermore, I searched for "boot camp", and did not find it on the computer.
Did I misss something in the install? Years ago when the machine was new, I clearly remember Boot Camp assistant (beta?) in the Utilities. Can someone help, and more to the point, tell me how to install Boot Camp Assistant.
    Thank you for your consideration.....

BETA. It was not included, and expired in 12/31/2007.
    Currently requires 10.5 or later.

  • Late 2006 MacBook Pro and Lion

Late 2006 MacBook Pro (2.16 Ghz Core 2 Duo w/ 3 GB RAM).
I'd like to run Lion on it so I can use iCloud to sync calendars, contacts etc between it and my Mac Pro, iPad and iPhone
MacBook Pro is old I know, but I'm not at the stage of being able to replace it. It's currently running Leopard. I'm getting different answers from Apple as to whether it could run Lion or or not.
Anyone had experience running Lion on an older machine like this?
    Thanks!

    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • ATI Radeon 5770 in 2006 Mac Pro with Lion

Hit an issue with my 2006 Mac Pro when the video card died in late October. At that point I was running Lion and had kept on top of software updates. Being on a restricted budget, I have purchased and installed an ATI Radeon 5770 card from the Apple store as I cannot afford a new Mac Pro. I knew that before I did this there may be incompatability problems with this card and Lion on the older Mac Pros, and this seems to be the case.
However, having trawled through the forums it seems some users are able to run this card on 1.1 machines with Lion. So I am now wondering if I have another issue - I'd much rather stick with Lion if I can rather than revert to Snow Leopard. Now I have installed the card things seem fine with the display - the 30" cinema display no longer has blocks of pixels all over it. On boot up the screen is a pale grey, the Apple logo appears in the centre with the busy timer underneath. I also get a loading bar for about 20 seconds. This gets to about 20% then disappears. Everything sounds like the machine is booting normally but it just won't progress beyond this point. I have tried holding shift to boot it in safe mode but the same things happens.
If anyone can help point me in the right direction of what I should try next I'd be profoundly grateful!
    Vinny

I knew that before I did this there may be incompatibility problems with this card and Lion on the older Mac Pros,
Although some users have complained of problems, their wounds may be self-inflicted. Use of a non-Apple ATI 5770 or failure to upgrade to at least 10.6.5 are high on the list. The main "issue", if you can even call it that, is the card runs more slowly than its published benchmarks due to PCIe 1 slots in the Mac Pro 1,2 and 2,1.
I also get a loading bar for about 20 seconds. This gets to about 20% then disappears.
That progress bar is indicative of unresolved Hard Drive problems. You need to boot to an alternate source of software (Hold Command-R at startup for Recovery_HD if you are running later than 10.6.8) and check the SMART Status and then select Macintosh_HD or whatever you renamed it and ( Repair Disk ). Repeat until all problems are resolved or it gets stuck. If you need help, copy the EXACT error message back here.

  • Will the late 2013 Mac Pro boot from an external drive (4Tb, USB 3) with a cloned Win7 x64 partition on it?

    Hello all,
I ordered a CTO Mac Pro for heavy rendering and animating work, and I am planning on using bootcamp to install a windows partition (for 3DsMax). As I am now using a HP Elitebook 8770W that has several valuable files and projects on it, I have bought a Seagate 4Tb external Desktop Drive that uses USB 3.0 to use as a backup drive. Now, as I saw that Bootcamp Assistant only supports installing a x64 version of Windows 8, my question is:
Will a late 2013 Mac Pro using bootcamp assistant boot from an external USB drive with a cloned partition running x64 win7? Or do I really have to buy Windows 8 and install that to my internal SSD, and then use the migration assistant to copy over my projects?
    Thanks!

Posted? or found in new builds?
BCA should really just pull whatever the latest drivers are when run.
If it is with how it partitions and sets up nMP and its partition for Windows that is another matter and makes sense.
Some people want UEFI native booting in Windows, and my experieince with that on PCs has been that it boots faster and runs well, but has different partitions that it wants. For one thing, there is now a backup "system reserved" partition, just as Apple GUID has some volume information blocks and backup and areas that were once optional (and if format erase was not able to, it would not create one) are now mandatory.
Windows 8.1 is req'd, reason a backup should be a big must - is it might overwrite and use another OS's  partition table entries.  Especially when doing UEFI install.
There was something about which linux OS was safe and how they would each add entries in the table, but one would not place nice.  That one had to be done first or not at all.
