I should have left things alone...HP Scanjet 5590 installer hangs

I had a fairly easy OS X 10.5 upgrade. In my incredible wisdom i decide to go back and clean up some installation. I removed the driver for my HP Scanjet 5590 and tried to reinstall it. About 1/3 of the way through the installation the installer hangs with 8 items to go. It wont complete no matter what I do. I was working after the OS 10.5 upgrade but I decided i would reinstall both my photosmart 3310 and scanjet 5590. The photosmart 3310 installer works perfectly. I removed all pieces of both installs and just tired to install the 5590 with no luck. Does anyone know any solution? Is there a problem with some installers hanging? It says it uses rosetta and its supposedly an universal binary. I have a email into HP support but sometimes I'd rather go to the dentist and have my teeth pulled then deal with them. I may just need to wait and have them fix this but I thought i would query the os x 10.5 community and see if ther was any hope. Thanks! Ira

I HAD the same problem. I decided to look within the package contents of the COL10829.dmg file I downloaded from HP. I worked my way into it until I found a directory called Sub Installers. I executed ONLY "HP Scan Pro" and "HP Scanjet 2400" (my model). It installed w/o issue. My conclusion is that it is one of the other Sub Installers that is causing the problem. My GUESS is that it's the "HP Image Zone v9.0 Help" installer as there have been some changes in the way help works in 10.5. Just a guess... but it works.

  • I should have left well enough alone

Last October, in five days, I recorded over 22 hours of video and imported to my 2008 iMac and added titles, intros, outros and music with no problem. Since then, I have upgraded to version 10.0.8. Today is the first opportunity I had to try it.
I recorded a 1920 x 1080 1.45 hour video and imported it to FCPX. So far, it has taken 4 hours to only reach 25% or so.
At this rate, I will never be able handle 22 hours of video let alone to burn the DVDs.
I'm 79 years young and enjoy using FCPX, but SS being my only income, it would be very difficult to come up with $2,000 or so for a faster iMac.
Got to figure out how to speed things up!

It was recorded at 1920 x 1080p on my Sony, HDR-PJ50V camcorder, then sent to a FAT formated, external drive and from there imported to FCPX.
Every evening, at a remote recording session, I transfer each days videos to the external drive and work with these files when I get home. That way, I still have the files on the camcorder to work with if needed.
I like the import function of the earler version of FCPX. I like the little circle next to the selected file, indicating the progress of the import.
I did not know that I could start editing without waiting. I will just turn off the import dialog, with all it's information and get to work on the videos

  • Software and Drivers for an HP Scanjet 5590 with a 64 bit Windows 7 computer.

I thought that I had posted the following question but as I can't find it I will try again.  I have been given a HP Scanjet 5590 scanner with no Software or Drivers for 64 bit Windows 7 computer and looking through the Web I saw some awful comments on the experiences of those using the software and drivers.  I don’t want to make the same mistake so could anyone tell me how to go about obtain the correct software and drivers?

    Corporal,
Here is the link for the software...
If you have the "p" model, backtrack a the link and reselect the proper model.
You want the "Full Feature" software.
Note that the download size is 315MB - plan accordingly if you have a slow connection...
While you are there, be sure to download the Print Doctor utiltity.  (Do that first, it is tiny.)  This may help later with installation and connection issues, if needed.)

    Three possible causes:
    - You got charged twice. On a computer go to iTunes Store>View Account>Purchase History and see what you got charged for
    - Maybe the difference is due to tax. Again the Purchase History will list the total price including tax for each purchase.
    - You had a negative balance (you owed money) before you redeemed the card.

  • What the Macbook Pro should have

Hi guys, 2 weeks ago I purchased my first Apple laptop - the Macbook Pro 13", before that (and still sometimes) I used PC. Even though the design is great, there are things that could be done to make it perfect. Here is my list, please tell me what you think about it.
1 - A delete button one the keyboard, I noticed that the Macbook Pro doesn't have one before purchasing it, but after using if for 2 weeks noticed how important it is.
2 - The 2 USB ports are quite inconvenient because they are next to each other, it would be more convenient if they are from both sides instead, like Macbook Air. I have devises that are a bit wider than the other ones, so when one of these is plugged in, the other USB port is unusable. Speaking of which USB 2.0 isn't good! The ThunderBolt port is great but there are no devises yet that can take any advantage of it, so in the meantime USB 3.0 would be great.
3 - HDMI port - most of the laptops already have it, I don't see why none of the Macbooks has it. If I want to connect my Macbook Pro to my TV, I have to spend extra money on MiniDisplay to HDMI adaptor (it's not like Apple products are any cheep, so spending extra money on things that should have been there on first place is NOT good).
4 - Numerical Keyboard - I know there is no room for it, but a button like Caps Lock could be used, when it's pressed certain buttons from the keyboard could act only as numerical keyboard and when pressed again, the keyboard could be back to normal.
5 - The screen resolution of the 13" Macbook Pro should have been like the 13" Macbook Air.
6 - The CD Drive is unnecessary, nobody uses it nowadays. Nobody listens to music from a CD and nobody installs any software from a CD, everyone uses the Internet for these things, the little part of people who are still using CDs, DVDs, etc. have other devises such as: DVD or Blue-ray players, HiFi systems and Desktops. The room that is taken by the Optical Disk could be used for a bigger battery.
7 - Better cooling system - when watching a move the laptop gets so hot that I literally can't put it on my lap (lol what a paradox, a laptop that cannot be put on a lap), also I would love to be able to close the lid and leave the laptop works (it is great when downloading big files or scanning software is used), but with that cooling system I'm afraid that it would overheat.
8 - Last but not least - The screen bezel. It's too big, Macbooks should be bezelless, it would make them much better looking.

DS had some great points, I'll chime in as well.
1.) I agree, it'd be handy to have. It definitely took some getting use to but once you do and modify your keyboard workflow it becomes second nature.
2.) I ended up investing a USB extension cable, Apple makes them I believe. At least they use to, I've had mine for years. While the cable dangling off the side of the machine is a bit of an annoyance, it's a necessity if I want to double up my AirCard (USB) with a thumb drive. USB 2.0 is still the "standard" and as such it's going to be the de facto peripheral port. Apple is historically slow about adopting non-standard peripheral interfaces unless they pioneer or champion it. It wouldn't surprise me if Apple still doesn't offer USB 3.0 this time next year. Thunderbolt/Light Peak is brand new tech, and as such it's going to take a while to have peripherals that support it. There are NAS devices that have it, they were just announced this week.
    Here's a link regarding its deployment - http://www.tuaw.com/2011/04/13/intel-distributing-thunderbolt-developer-kits-thi s-quarter-more/
3.) I agree that HDMI would be nice but with Thunderbolt supporting HDMI, I really don't see Apple adding another video out port. There's no room left on the I/O strip on the 13" MBP for it. Apple use to include adapters (when the MBP first came out) but they've since stopped doing that and gouge with adapters. Thankfully there are numerous 3rd party offerings at a fraction of the price.
4.) I agree, I forget which "redesign" of the keyboard layout got rid of the Num Lock key. I know my 15" MBP (Santa Rosa) has it. I currently use my iPhone as my numerical keyboard, there's a great little app that pairs the phone to your computer via Bluetooth. It works great as an alternative.
5.) Marketing 101. By introducing it via a future revision this encourages current owners to want to upgrade/switch and thus move more units and tout it as a "feature upgrade." I was pretty shocked the i5/i7 update to the MBP 13" did not introduce the 1440 resolution.
6.) This is where you'll get disagreement. Rule #1 of proper Internet forum posting, don't use words like: everyone, everyone, most, all, nobody, no one, etc. Especially without evidence to back it up. While you don't use it, people do. I use mine daily, my co-workers use their drives daily. That's 11 people right there, which is 11 more than "nobody."
7.) Apple has never called their computer a "laptop." They've always referred to is as a portable computer. Matter of fact, they strongly discourage the use of their portable computers on your lap due to how the heat dissipation process works through the top case. So the problem(s) you're experiencing are to be expected, you're using the machine in a method that is not recommended by the manufacturer. They even discuss that in the "Getting Started" booklet that came with your machine.

  • A 6 hour installation that should have only taken 30minutes!! Very unhappy customer!!

I am very upset about a recent purchase I made at your store.  I bought a fridge (an open box item) and it was going to be delivered on Friday, March 28.  The delivery guy (Jake) came at about 10:30 and hauled away our old fridge and brought in the new fridge BUT then the trouble began.  Jake said that the hose part we bought won’t fit the waterline and we need an adapter (looks like the size of a nut or washer – just a little part) I asked him if he had this part on the truck and he said he doesn’t carry parts on the truck and told me I need to go to town (I live 30 miles out of town!) and go to the store and get the part – I was a little confused because he was supposed to be installing the fridge.  I didn’t know much about the fridge so I said ok, what would I need to tell them and he said tell them you need an adapter that is 3/4” to a 1/2”.  So he kinked my waterhose and put a bucket underneath it but it still dripped a little bit so I hurried to town (it is about 11:30 now) to Best Buy to get the adapter and the guy in the appliance area didn’t know what I was talking about so they called Jake and he told the Best Buy employee what I needed and the employee said they don’t carry that part….. so I went to Lowes and they didn’t know what I needed because it didn’t make sense to them that I would need a 3/4” to a 1/2” adapter.  I then went to Menards and talked to the appliance department and then they didn’t know so I was sent to the plumbing department and the lady was very nice there but she also didn’t think it made sense that I needed a 3/4” to a 1/2” adapter because waterlines are usually 1/4”.  So I called up Best Buy while still at Menards and they had Jake (the delivery /installer) talk to the lady at Menards and explain to her what I needed so he told her the same thing – I needed a 3/4” to a 1/2” adapter.  She said that the only thing they would have is 2 options a 3/4” to 1/2” adapter or 1/2” to 1/2” adapter (they both looked like the size that would fit a garden hose!!  I didn’t think that was right but that is what Jake from Best Buy – the delivery /installer guy told the lady at Menards.  So I bought those 2 parts and raced back home because now it was 1:30pm in the afternoon after running around for 2 hours looking for an adapter that Jake said I needed.  I got home and was immediately livid!!  The two parts were what I thought TOO BIG!  Both ends were only 1/4”!  So I called Best Buy again and talked to Mike (I didn’t get a last name) he was very nice and tried to be helpful .  I explained what happened from the beginning (around 10:45am till now 1:30pm) and told him this is outrageous I am missing a whole day of work because of this when I could have been to work by 11:30am if Jake did this correctly.  I told him I can text him photos of everything 1) The end of the water line 2) the end of the fridge 3) both ends held up together 4) each end by a tape measure to show it was only 1/4”.  He said that would be very helpful so he game me his number and I texted the photos to him and I got a call 2 minutes late and he said “umm… I am so sorry for the inconvenience but all you need is an adapter for a female end to a make end and they have those parts on their trucks”, I asked if he was being serious because it was around 2:30pm now and I still don’t have my fridge installed!  Mike said he would call Jake and tell him to get to our house and put the waterline on with the part from his truck.  Mike called back after talking to Jake and he said that Jake was in Crookston, MN for a delivery but would come right back to our house as soon as he was done.  Jake got to our house around 3:30pm and came in and I showed him the parts that I bought that HE told the lady at Menards I needed.  He said he didn’t know what to do.  I told him I talked to Mike at Best Buy and he said you have the part on your truck.  He said he would go look.  He came back in (sure enough) with the part!!!  He connected the waterline to the fridge and it was done (Literally 10 minutes) and left around 4:15pm.  I am so disgusted with the incompetence of your delivery guy/installer, for something that should have taken a total of 1/2 hour or less.  My fridge should have been delivered and installed and I should have been on my way to work by 11:00am to 11:30am.  Instead I spend a whole day running around and make numerous phone calls that were NOT NECESSARY.  Then I tried to call the store and explain about what happened but Nichole – said she was the Home Sales Manager, said there was nothing the store could do and didn’t even acknowledge the incompetence of the installer and she didn’t even attempt to resolve this issue.  I have make attempts to get this matter resolved but have not received ANY responses, I am hoping someone will respond to this message?!?
    Solved!

    Hello magicmel,
I’m positive you were excited to receive your new refrigerator, and expected the installation to go smoothly. Our installers should be knowledgeable in their field, and able to troubleshoot issues such as you described. It’s truly regrettable that Jake may not have known which part you needed, and sent you on a trip across town to look for a part that was unnecessary.
After running from store to store only to find that the part needed for your refrigerator was in the installer’s truck, I can imagine how frustrated you would be, as I would be infuriated if I were in your shoes. While I’m glad to hear that Mike was able to get things resolved with just a few pictures, I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
I was able to locate your service order and refrigerator purchase, and I am sending you further information in regards to this experience via a private message. You can check your private messages by signing into the forum and clicking the envelope icon in the top right corner of the page.

  • Not sure if I should have started over or not...

I bought a 2TB time capsule on Saturday.  Following the directions, all seemed to be going well for my initial backup.  I had roughly 200GB on my system to backup.
Everything appeared to be going smooth and when I left for work this morning, it said it had 75GB left to go.
I came home for lunch and the first thing that caught my eye was the light on the TC blinking yellow.
Turns out my wireless went down sometime this morning.
Once I got the wireless reset and all the lights were green again, I clicked the backup now button.  It spent some time "indexing" and then started backing up the remaining 52GB.
I'm hoping that was the right thing to do and I end up with a working initial backup when it's done.
From reading other posts here, I'm not sure that I made the right choice and I should have erased the initial data and started again.

Yes, that's fine (as long as it eventually completes).  There's really no functional difference between an initial backup and incrementals.
From reading other posts here, I'm not sure that I made the right choice and I should have erased the initial data and started again.
    No reason to do that.
The one thing you might have done was to connect via Ethernet cable for the initial backup -- that should be 2-3 times faster than via a good WIFI connection, and more reliable, too.    If you ever have to do a very large backup again, or a full or large restore, do that via Ethernet, too.
If it fails again, just connect via Ethernet and let 'er rip!

Every morning when I "awaken" my MacBook Pro, I come to find that my Safari browser has been closed on it's own. How to fix this? I don't want to lose anything I have possibly typed in a site that I have left to finish working on for later. I checked system preferences and everything seems to be checked appropriately as well as for Safari's preferences.
I am not sure what's going on, because Safari only just recently started doing this and I haven't downloaded anything, nothing out of my regular computer routine. As well, I upgraded to Mavericks when it came out and I have the last version of it too. I can't imagine that Safari would close simply because I don't have or want to upgrade to Yosemite. I am holding off on the upgrade for a bit, because I heard Final Cut Pro 7 can't be run on Yosemite. While I could partition my drive, I really don't want to. Mavericks is fine for right now :   )
Okay sooooo...back to Safari...what the! Please help and thanks for any replies ahead of time!
I Hope All Is Well In Your World :   )

There's an Apple help page on the DNS problem - at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3408
The first thing to try is changing your DNS settings - and for that you need to open System Preferences, then the
    Network section.
In Network - click  on Advanced - then the DNS tab
under DNS servers - use the + button to enter two extra lines
    either these, from google dns
    8.8.8.8
    8.8.4.4
    or from OpenDNS
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
then click OK & then 'Apply'
You would need to do that seperately for the Cable (Ethernet) settings and Wireless (Airport)

  • Verizon should be giving me a network extender if I cannot use their phone here in my home even though they say I "should" have coverage. Verizon acknowledges that it is a problem of theirs...but I'm expected to pay my bill and can't use my phone?

I want VERIZON to send us a NETWORK extender at their cost because I pay my bill and am NOT receiving phone service from VERIZON as promised. I am stranded without the use of my cell phone in my home. My contract says that VERIZON will provide me service and I must pay...I DO pay. Why would VERIZON do this to a almost 7 year responsible customer? Our whole family uses VERIZON (seperately) and this is horrible customer service. VERIZON knows that many of the basic phones do not work as promised. I want a working phone. All VERIZON keeps saying is that my upgrade isn't until August? I don't want an upgrade, I want a phone that works. I am contacting the Attorney General's office to see what can be done. I have missed emergency phone calls and now will be in a snowstorm without a reliable phone.

First of all, Verizon does not guarantee service, even in areas where the map says there is full coverage.
Service provided vial radio waves can be affected by multiple things, such as foliage, buildings AND asmospheric conditions such as snowstorms.
Maybe you should have purchased the NE before the snowstorm, but then if your power went out, you would be out of luck. Of course, your power company says they will provide you power, but then again, sometimes there are outages.
If phone service is so important, there is NOTHING as reliable as a land line!!!

If things seem to be going haywire with your phone, it seems that it MAY be a software issue.
Now, that being said, that does not necessarily mean that it is a virus. Software issues do happen sometimes. It is probably just coincidence.
What you need to do is restore the device using iTunes. This will fix any software issues. After you have done this, you can restore from an iCloud backup.
iCloud does not back up the actual software, so no, the "virus" would not have gotten into the backups.
The link below provides steps on restoring your device using iTunes as well as how to restore from an iCloud backup.

Don't worry! Everything should be back to normal if you follow these steps.
