I tried to master reset my I pod touch, now all I have is a apple skull with a flame on its head I am trying to sync and I can not get past the apple with a flame

I bought my daughter an I pod touch 3 gen. I tried to do a master reset so I could sync it with my Itunes account. After resetting, all that is showing is an apple that looks like a skull with a flame on top. Does anyone know what I am supposed to do so I can sync it?

Master reset...? Your device was jailbroken prior to you purchasing the device. The only symbol you should see on reboot is an Apple symbol. Download redsnow... google it! Download the latest version and your IPSW (ipod restore firmware) it has to be the correct version. And the "just boot tethered" should fix your device.
But that's only if you didnt back the device up. If you don't care about any of the data on the ipod then you can simply open itunes navigate to the device and click the restore button. This will restore the ipod firmware and install a fresh copy. Good luck let me know if you have any problems.

Thanks, Andrew for your help. Not sure if you will see this, but I did the above and it said the HD was okay. Rebooted it and still won't go past login page. Tried it again and this time typed in the line /sbin/fsck -fy and then it came up and said HD was okay, but said something about being modified. I once more rebooted, but it still won't get past the login screen. Besides taking long to reboot, as before, I am able to enter my password, but then it hangs up with the rainbow icon rotating continuously. My 4th Gen Ipod touch will not get past the apple logo (unless the battery is dead, Then it tell me to charge it). Once it gave me the connect to itunes screen. I clicked restore in itunes but the ipod went back to the apple logo before the update download finished. I tried calling apple but my over the phone technical support just expired. PLEASE HELP!

This can be a corrupted software/firmware on your iPod touch. If the recovery mode you did was not forced, then try to force it into recovery mode. This is how:
1. Force it to shut down (note: this sort of shut down should not be preformed unless you are in a situation like this because it is a hardware shutdown and will not attempt to unload software, save unsaved files, safely stop system processes, etc.) to do this, hold down the power/sleep button and home button for about 7 or 10 secs. Also I might be incorrect but I heard that you can just hold down the sleep and home button until the screen goes blank and then immediately let go.
2. Have iTunes running. Hold down the home button and plug the USB cable that came with your iPod into it. Keep on holding on the home button until a picture of a USB cable going into the iTunes logo appears. You are now in a forced recovery mode. (In case your not so tech-savvy forced recovery is the same as a normal recovery mode that an iPod might do if it knows an update or restore failed.)
3. iTunes should have shown a pop-up message about it found a iPod in recovery mode. Click OK, click your iPod from the sidebar and click restore. The iPod will show the apple logo for a while and iTunes will say "preparing iPod for restore" and then "waiting for iPod" this was the longest part of updates for me.
4. iPod will reboot when restore is completed. When I update my iPod it one time showed the apple logo for one whole sync until it showed the slide to unlock screen, so do not worry. P.S if that does not work do a DFU mode restore ( I've been told DFU mode stands for device firmware update mode) I'm running out of room, so google it. Hope this helped ;)

I assume that you mean that all you see on the screen is the Apple logo and it hasn't changed for hours from that screen. You may need to restore using recovery mode, since your iPad is not being recognized in iTunes.

You may have hardware problem, I think a visit to your local Apple Store or AASP is in order.

Sure, you can get around it if you don't need the newest version of iTunes. I still use version 7.5 because the newer versions didn't strike me as offering anything I needed.
If you do need a version 10-something then you will have to upgrade your operating system to Leopard (fi your computer will support it) at least. If you need 10.5 for some reason then there's no getting around it, you will have to buy a new computer.

Experiment - or search these forums - someone discovered a solution and it was a format issue
The US format for phone numbers is 10 digits AAA-PPP-NNNN - you do not include the 01+ here typically - maybe if you can out your digites in that format it will work
