I've had my iTunes library stored on an external hard drive, and I'm now trying to load it onto a new computer, how do I do it?
I have my complete iTunes library stored on an external hard rice and bought a new computer yesterday, I've connected the external hard drive to my new computer, downloaded iTunes but cant get my library to show, can anybody tell me how to fix this?
Hold down SHIFT and launch iTunes.
When prompted to create or locate an iTunes library point iTunes to the location on the external drive.

I have my itunes media stored on my external hard drive. On this external drive I have a folder called "TV shows". I previously cut and pasted itunes TV shows to this folder to free up some space. How do I incorporate this folder (TV shows) back into the itunes library?
assuming the copy files ... when adding option is checkmarked in preferences > advanced, drag the folder into an open iTunes window while holding option (⌥).

Old Itunes library (from PC) on external hard drive - Mac won't recognise
I feel like I've tried absolutely everything, so hopefully someone here can help.
I had my Itunes library stored on an external disc. This was when I was using Itunes on a PC. It all ran fine....
Now we've upgraded to a Mac and for the life of me I cannot get Itunes to recognise the library.
First I just tried changing the folder location with no luck. Now I've tried holding down alt when starting Itunes, I've located the folder, and at first it seemed all was well as the albums (sans artwork) all appeared in Itunes. But when I try to play them or send songs to my Iphone, it says it can't locate the file. I've tried to then manually point it to the external drive and the old library and it still won't recognise it.

I opened my iPhoto library today which was stored on an external hard drive and several of my videos now will not play at all. The weird thing is that each file shows a duration of 1 second and when I open them it just shows one frame. What the !&%$#@ Where did my original video files go?
Sounds like a good plan, you can never be to safe and having a second External HD is safer than one.
The only thing that I would do different, is setup the 3T as my TimeMachine Backup and then erase and move my Photos, Videos and perhaps even iTunes Media to the 1T. That way you will have room to backup both the Internal Hard Drive and the 1T External Hard Drive to the 3T using TimeMachine.
Take your time, study and use the > Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions if you get stuck or aren't sure how to make the move.

How do I get itunes library to move to external hard drive automatically?
I have a 250 GB Verbatim external hard drive. This hard drive has an existing itunes library from my PC. I figured out how to combine the two itunes libraries, (1 from PC and 1 from Macbook). I cannot figure out how to set up itunes to automatically save to external hard drive. In other words, I've gotten everything onto my Mac, but not onto the external, which is what I want. When I try to move the itunes folders to my Verbatim in Finder, it gives me the circle with the line through it. It will not let me move anything over to the Verbatim. Please help!
On the copying issue, if the drive was used with a PC initially it is quite possible it is formatted to NTFS. Macs can read NTFS drives but not write to them You could try to use a utility such as NTFS-3G to enable read-write, or you could use Disk Utility to reformat the drive to FAT (probably FAT32) which can be read by both PCs and Macs. FAT has certain disadvantages too, such as not being repairable by Macs, and there is a limit on single file sizes (2GB or 4GB depending upon the FAT version).
Once you get your whole iTunes folder (not just media) onto the external drive, start iTunes with the option key held down and show it the new location.

My ITunes Library is on an external hard drive, however, the internal hard drive on my laptop crashed, requireing a complete re-format and re-installation of Windows XP--When I re-install Itunes, what do I need to do to make sure I do not lose all of the content on the two iphones I have, and to re-associate the library with Itunes ( i know how to change the path) but I am fearful that somehow the library link will be broken since the old Itunes installation is gone, and who knows what else might go awry.

I recently moved my Aperture Library file to an external hard drive. Can I now create a vault to be saved on my Time Capsule for the Aperture library on this external hard drive?
One thing to bear in mind, if you are using Time Machine on your Time Capsule and have it set so the TM backup includes your external drive, you will effectively be backing up your Aperture library twice on the same drive, once with Time Machine and once with the vault. This isn't a problem unless you start to run out of space.
Another thing to note, vaults on network drives used to be flaky (i.e. not really supported) and required workarounds to be able to use them. I'm not sure if this has changed, but I just managed to create a vault on my TC ok. -
How do I transfer my iTunes library back from an external hard drive?
Hi. Today, I bought a 1TB external hard drive, and I was very excited to transfer my music over to it. It worked fine for a couple of hours, but then, tragedy struck. Right in the middle of listening to a song, it stopped and Windows told me the device has malfunctioned. I tried everything, and I couldn't get it to work again. Luckily, I hadn't deleted the files from my internal hard drive, but I still have another problem. If I re-import all the music from my folders again, all my data such as playlists, ratings, and artwork is lost. I definitely don't want to do this again, but I don't know what else I can do. I can't set the default iTunes Media folder, because my albums are arranged in an iTunes Media folder to begin with. I can't simply put them all in iTunes Media folders, because I have 60 GB of music, and I want to keep spare copies without overblowing my internal hard drive. What do I do? Thanks.
I'm guessing you "consolidated" the library to the new location. If so this technique should let you connect a working of your library from before the migration.
Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
An alternative approach would be to repair the broken links with my FindTracks script.

Itunes will not find my external hard drive and music on it
I have downloaded itunes onto new laptop that has windows vista all the music is stored on an external hard drive. When i plug in the hard drive it no longer finds automatically the music file and runs it as it did on my old pc with windows xp. I have changed the location to find the music in itunes but no luck. If i go into my computer and look at the external hard drive and click on any song it then opens itunes and plays it! Help please
When you say "when i double click on my itunes files it just opens up this list of music." it doesn't mean anything to me. You need to explain clearly, remember I only know what you tell me.
I need to understand how you have things set up and if you had you iTunes library database on the external drive or the c: drive. That is the iTunes folder containing iTunes library.itl.
What do you see when you open iTunes on the new PC, are your music files there. If not, every time you play a track it gets added to itUnes so you should at least have some files in your library.
What problem are you trying to solve? Is just getting the tracks into your iTunes library, or are you also concerned about ratings, count and playlists from the old PC. If so do you still have access to the old PC? -
Since my music takes up a lot of space, I've moved my entire iTunes Library to an external hard drive. If I subscribe to iTunes Match, can I upload the music from my external hd or does it need to actually be in my iTunes Library?

iTunes Match does not work this way. The location of your music in iTunes is not changed by iTM. If you needed the external HDD connected to play your music before you enabled iTM you will still need it connected after you enable HDD.
Now, if you wish to not have to have the extenal HDD connected, then you can create a new, empty library in iTunes by holding down the Option key while launching iTunes and enable iTM on that library. That will allow you to you stream your music in iTunes. You'll need to switch between the libraries to make changes to the metadata. -
Problem storing music on external hard drive and iTunes recognising the music.

I've set up iTunes on my parents windows Laptop to store all the music on an external hardrive. In preferences and in advanced I altered where the music was located. But unfortunately when they removed the external and went to use it a few days later, iTunes did not recognise where the music was stored.
There is no music in the iTunes folder on the laptop only on the external.
I deleted all the music that could not be located...all had exclamation mark.
Added folder to library, which was from the external hardrive.
Music re added and they were able to put music on their ipod. However the same has happened again when they removed and reinserted their external. Should I just cut my losses and reput all the music back on the Laptop (makes it very slow, quite alot of it) or am I missing checking or deselecting something in itunes, with it being on an external hard drive.
Hope to hear back from someone to help.If you've split the media folder out to an external drive and then start iTunes while the drive is disconnected iTunes gets out of sorts. It will reset the media folder to the default internal path. Depending on what other devices have been connected the external drive letter may also change from time to time which also confuses iTunes. What works best is to create your iTunes library at the root of the external drive, with the media folder inside. In this confuration if the drive isn't connected or has changed letter, iTunes will stop with an error. You can either cancel, connec the drive, and restart, or in the case of a changed drive letter, simply browse to X:\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl to open it, where X:: is the current letter for the external drive.
See make a split library portable for details of how to rearrange your library if you've got it working. Alternatively press and hold down shift as you start iTunes, keep holding until asked to choose or create a library, then click create and make the library at X:\iTunes. Move all the media inside X:\iTunes\iTunes Media, then use File Add Folder to Library to import it.
