I want to format FAT32

I have a hard drive in a USB enclosure and I need to format it FAT32 from my Mac. Can I do this and confirm that it's FAT32?
chris

First: Check to make sure MS-DOS (FAT) shows up, this is FAT16 NOT FAT32 as everyone says it is. I am 100% sure as I checked the block size on linux and windows.
This part can get very TECHY for some, so don't go any further unless you know what I am talking about.
If you are not seeing MS-DOS in the erase or partition tabs this means the MBR (Master Boot Record) has not been added to the Hard Drive. Doing so will ERASE everything.
Adding MBR (open disk utility):
1. Click your HARD DRIVE on left you want to format
2. Click Partition Tab
3. Click the "Volume Scheme" Pull down, Partition 1, 2 and so on.
NOTE: Before you begin, if you have a Firewire 800 Drive, i recommend you partition most of you space as Mac OS Extended. This is so you can take advantage of the Speed on FW800 and size of individual files. On a FAT32 partition you have a limitation on a single file size. If you are NOT doing video then this is not really a problem for you. I think the limit is 2GIGS per file in FAT32, on Mac OS Extended its unlimited.
4. Once you select a partition type you should see the "Options..." button enabled.
5. Click "Options"
6. Select "Master Boot Record", Click "OK"
7. Set your first partition to your larger of the two, (Example: 300gb to Partition 1, 200gb to Partition 2).
8. Select the Format you want under "Format" menu, do this for both partitions or a single partition if you choose to do a single FAT32 partition.
9. Click "Apple" when done, keep in mind this will erase everything on the drive
Tech Part: This may damage the drive if not used correctly. Be very careful what you type. BE WARNED!! I am not responsible for your damages.
1. Select the drive you want FAT32
2. Right Click the drive select Information (or press Apple+I)
3. Disk Identifier is what you are looking for, should be something like disk1s#
4. Right Click the drive select Unmount
4. Open a terminal (Application->Utilitiies->Terminal.app)
5. Type:
newfs_msdos -F 32 -v "MyDriveName" /dev/rdisk1s#
The drive should be the same exact name as you noted above, only with the "r" added to the beginning of the name.
Be sure to DOUBLE check everything, this will wipe the drive.
After running newfs_msdos, you can mount your drive by going back into Disk Utility right click the drive and select Mount.
Also, be sure the first step of checking if "MS-DOS (FAT)" is an available option. If it is not, you will get an error when running the newfs_msdos command on the drive when inside "Disk Utility" and repair will NOT work on the drive.
I hope this helps someone. As it took me a few hours of playing around to get this to work correctly. I still don't know why apple does not have FAT32 as an option yet you can do it via the command line.

  • I have an external drive - WD My Passport FOR MAC. I want to format it to work on both mac and windows. Which format do you think I should use? Will either one cause damage to the files on the hard drive?

    I have an external hard drive - WD My Passport FOR MAC. I want to format it to work on both mac and windows. I also want to be able to connect it to my TV and watch movies.
    I read up and I think I am supposed to use exFAT or FAT32? I also saw MS-DOS. Which format should I should use? Will any of them cause damage to the files on the hard drive?
    My little memory stick uses MS-DOS and it works on both mac and windows.
    Please can you just tell me a little about each and suggest which one to use.
    I know how to change it once you tell me so don't waste your time writing about changing it.

    Will any of them cause damage to the files on the hard drive?
    WARNING: FORMATTING A DRIVE ERASES IT COMPLETELY !!
    If you need to carry large files (e.g., larger than about 4GB) back and forth, you may need ExFAT. Otherwise MS-DOS works for smaller files.
    The Mac can Read, but not write Windows New Technology File System (NTFS) without an add-on program such as Paragon NTFS.

  • Windows 7 and iTunes doens't recognise iPod Classic 80g after wipe clean hard drive and format fat32.

    My iPod Classic 80gb every now-and-then goes funny, and eventually iTunes doesn't recognise it. In the past I could put it on disk mode, and do a reset, but some times I would have to format (FAT32), uninstall and reinstall iTunes, so it would work. Now it happened again, this time wiped clean the hard drive and formatted. However windows 7 and iTunes still doesn't recognise it. Tried many tips online but nothing works. All software I have used don't see the hard drive, so can't format it again.
    I can get it on disk mode but even then windows and iTunes don't recognise it. When connecting to laptop my machine goes boiling hot. Left it connected with iTunes on for  few hours but still no luck.
    Any suggestions?

    Hello @turingtest2.
    Following your threat I realized it was time to have my hard drive changed. My iPod classic has a Samsung Model: HS081HA, 80gb/3600 rpm (real hard to get it open and check out!!!).
    My question is if I DO HAVE to buy exactly the same hard drive, or I could get away with another manufacturer and model, such as Toshiba (80 GB MK8009GAH FOR iPod Video 5th 5.5th iPod Classic 6.5th 7th Gen Hard Drive - Ebay listing)?
    I ask you that as these Toshiba hard drives are considerably cheaper.
    Help much appreciated.

  • I want to format my hard drive so i can have files bigger than 4GB what format should I use?

    I have a new hard drive that I want to format so it will work with both mac and PC (windows) but I have files that are bigger than 4GB, what format should I use?
    It needs to work with both PC and mac because I need to go between two computers etc

    If both of these computers are connect to the same router, both are in your home or place of work (Both are in the same location), it is very easy to Network them so you don't have to use DropBox or the external drive to share files between them.

  • I want to format my external drive so that my new imac and my pc can read and write ,what should i do?

    i want to format my external drive so that my new imac and my pc can read

    Start by partitioning the drive as required for the Mac:
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    Now click on the Erase tab in the main menu, then select ExFAT from the Format Type dropdown menu. Click on the Erase button. This format is read/write on both the Mac and the PC. If you have a problem with it on the PC, then format the drive the same way using the Windows formatter.

  • Windows 8 installer doesn't want to format the boot camp partition

    Hello,
    I followed this instructions : http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/45898/how-to-install-windows-8-on-a-mac
    All works but the installer doesn't want to format the boot camp partition, i click on "option" > "format", i wait like 3-4 seconds (so not enought to format 100Go) and then same error "Windows can't be installed on this partition".
    Any idea ?
    I have :
    Macbook Pro 15'' 2,4 GHz Intel Core i5
    Mac OS X v10.7.5
    1 Drive : 320Go
    1 USB KEY that i used to install osx lion, so i think it's not the problem.
    1 Windows8 64 downloaded from my university, and it works on a PC.

    I have the same issue. Dec. 2013 13" macbook pro with 1tb ssd. Windows 8 Pro (have the box/cd).
    Why is it that I can find every computer problem I ever have in a thread somewhere where someone else had the same problem too....but the threads never have solutions.  There should be a name for this phenomenon.

  • Says I need to format disk in drive E: but I dont want to format it!

    I recently needed to get a new hard drive because my Laptop would not start up, and from then when ever I put in a USB or SD card, it says that it needs to be formatted although it works perfectly fine on other computers. Is there anyway I can get it to
    work on my laptop because I really do not want to format it. And it would also say that "the volume does not contain a recognized file system"
    I have used a recovery tool but they don't recovery everything that I need.

    Hello,
    I'd ask in the Windows forum on Microsoft Community.

  • Hello, I just want to formate the computer and start fresh??

    Hello, I just want to formate the computer and start fresh??

    NavarroSergio,
    since you have a Late 2011 model, you can use OS X Internet Recovery to start fresh.
    First, you’ll need to completely erase your internal disk. Boot your MacBook Pro into Recovery mode by holding down a Command key and the R key as it starts up. Once the Mac OS X Utilities menu appears, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk (typically the first item in the list). On the right-hand side, click on the Erase tab. In the Format dropdown menu, select “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)”; in the Name textbox, enter a name for the reformatted volume (“Macintosh HD” is typical). Press the Erase… button, and erase your disk. When the erasure is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Shutdown from the Apple menu.
    The next time that you start up, OS X Internet Recovery will download your MacBook Pro’s original version of OS X (either 10.7.2 or 10.7.3) from Apple’s servers, and then install it. When it finishes, you’ll again see the welcome video just like when you first got it. Fill in your relevant information as you did the first time, and when you log in for the first time, run Software Update to get back to 10.7.5.

  • We are using the "ExportAllText" script, But we want to format it for csv export

    We are using the ExportAllText script, http://forums.adobe.com/thread/733900, but we want to format the text so we can import it csv format
    What we need it to change the begin of the story with (") quotes, change the end of the first paragraph with another caracter ("|"), so the first paragraph, is the first field in the comma separated value, then at end of the story another (") quote and a end of paragraph. So with this we will have two fields per row.
    In the Script this is the part where it reads the stories from the indesign document, but we do not know how to do it?
    We are using CS2
      for(myCounter = 0; myCounter < myDocument.stories.length; myCounter++){
        myStory = myDocument.stories.item(myCounter);
        //Export the story as tagged text.
        myStory.exportFile(ExportFormat.taggedText, myTempFile);
        //Import (place) the file at the end of the temporary story.
        myNewStory.insertionPoints.item(-1).place(myTempFile);
        //If the imported text did not end with a return, enter a return
        //to keep the stories from running together.
        if(myCounter != myDocument.stories.length -1){
          if(myNewStory.characters.item(-1).contents != "\r"){
            myNewStory.insertionPoints.item(-1).contents = "\r";
