  • HT5193 I want to use Apple TV in a hospital classroom setting and IT is concerned about security (patient information). Is this an issue and how can I put them at ease?

I want to use the Apple TV to create an interactive white board type setting in the classroom. I appreciate the help.

My first reply was probably a bit vague but it's not clear exactly what you're planning to do.
Anyhow first off, remember this is simply a user to user forum and is not an Apple staffed technical advice area so no one here can accept any responsibility for the implementation you attempt.
If you intend to do anything that could potentially compromise patient confidentiality you must get appropriate advice from suitable agencies including your IT dept and probably Apple itself. Depending which country you are in you will be subject to local healthcare laws aimed at protecting patient confidentiality.
As users we know next to nothing about AppleTV under the hood security.
AppleTV runs a version of iOS just like iPhones and iPads.
There is no antivirus/firewall software for iOS as it's already pretty locked down.
That does not mean it is 100% secure as nothing is, and all these devices can potentially be hacked.
AppleTV itself does not store any content permanently, losing data when it's unplugged, so that is probably not an issue unless someone was going to attempt a forensic style data rescue from the internal components.
If your IT dept allows iPhones or iPads on the network then in principle it's the same, and in many ways less of an issue as it doesn't support 3rd party apps, only a small selection of features from Apple and selected partners.
I assume for your whiteboard plan this would entail using a touch screen like an iPad for mirroring.  Be aware that fullscreen mirroring will send a 4:3 image to the display as the iPad screen is 4:3 not 16:9 (widescreen).
You need to work with your IT dept to assess the feasibility of what you want to do - unless you need internet access, to me it would seem a standalone local network without internet connectivity might remove some concerns about devices connecting to the main hospital network.  Maybe their concern is simply wifi and possible interecption of data sent to the AppleTV - this would likely be a proprietary screen sharing format for Airplay but it could still potentially be intercepted on wifi though I can't really see why anyone would want to as the data would probably be pretty useless to them unless this was a specific attempt to capture Airplay streams and people knew what they were doing and had compromised your wifi security.
    Good luck.

  • I want to use my apple TV as a second monitor not a mirrored one, in other words, I want to use my TV as a second screen not a copy of my first screen, other people have asked this question but have been given mirroring answers. I want a second display.

I want to use my apple TV as a second monitor not a mirrored one, in other words, I want to use my TV as a second screen not a copy of my first screen, other people have asked this question but have been given mirroring answers so I am spelling it out here very specifically. I want a second display. This should be possible and would be awesome. Anyone know how to do this?

Nevermind I just installed it to try it and it's awesome, so happy right now, Thanks. All the things I had read about it on third party sites led me to believe it could not do extended desk tops, thanks for your help!

UEFI (unified extensible firmware interface) boot requires Global unique identifier Partition Table (GPT) as opposed to the older Master Boot Record (MBR). If your existing drive is formatted in MBR, you will need to adjust BIOS settings to enable legacy boot in order for it to work properly.
Is there a performance difference between GPT and MBR? If GPT is better, I do not mind formatting the drive with it.
    5. No special drivers are needed.
Thanks. What about the thunderbolt port?
    7. I think Lenovo estimates 6 hours.
Lenovo says 6 hours with the 6-cell battery on its website.

    Hi,
There was a serious BIOS/UEFI problem with that SSD . Perhaps this thread will save you some headaches. Someone is recomending shutting off Rapid Boot in the setup, which would probable mean little with a SSD, anyway.
I read through this, and it looks like the problem was fixed in a BIOS update, which I plan to do. However, it also seems like Intel Rapid Start is not even worth it in the first place, as sleep consumes almost no power at all.

  • I want to install Snow Leopard Server on our MacPro (2.66) using Mac Mini Snow Leopard Server disks?  I kept getting an error for backwards compatibility.   Is this possible or do I need to purchase another copy of Snow Leopard Server?

I want to install Snow Leopard Server on our MacPro(2.66) using Mac Mini Snow Leopard Server disks?  I kept getting an error for backwards compatibility.   Is this possible or do I need topurchase another copy of Snow Leopard Server?

The OS disks that are shipped with a particular product
are set up so that tey will only install on that product.
It will install on any Mini of that exact vintage, but that
    is all.
This is to prevent people from doing exactly what you
are trying to do.  The license for OSX shipped with any
is only valid for that product.  Also, Snow Leopard,
including Server, is only permitted to be run on one
computer at a time.  Bottom line, unlike Lion, legally
you cannot install the same copy on multiple
computers unless some "family pack" or site license
    is purchased.
Yes, you need to purchase another copy.
The copy of Snow Leopard license is here:

Apps for OSX aren't in iTunes: they are in the App Store in your Applications folder. The payment method is the one registered in iTunes. There's no app actually called Yoga Studio, though there are several Yoga apps. There is an iOS app called Yoga Studio but it appears to have no OSX equivalent, though I haven't done a detailed search.

  • New install on MacBook but I want to use external hard drive for storage. How?

    Hi folks.
I just bought and installed Lightroom on My MacBook, it has a tiny HD and I was hoping to use an External HD for storage of photos.
Is there a trick to setting up the external HD for storage?
Should I of put the catalogue on there rather than the Mac HD?
    thanks for any help.

Yea I'm just going to wait for a solution I like better. The easiest way would be for apple to have some kind of itunes server software. Theres no reason that my computer running itunes shouldn't be able to communicate with with hard drive wirelessly just as it would with a usb cable. Kind of like wireless itunes synching with my iphone.
I don't want to use Itunes match because music is not my concern. It is the 1,000 movies that I want to watch on apple tv without tying up my laptop.
    Thanks anyway

  • In the top left on my screen where the back arrow is, there used to be a drop down arrow to skip back many pages. After installing 4.0.1, it has disappeared. How do I get it back?

In the top left on my screen where the back arrow button is to go back to previous webpages, there used to be a drop down arrow just to the right so I can see many of my previous web pages. Since installing Firefox 4.0.1, that arrow disappeared.

You can get the drop down list by either right-clicking on the back/forward buttons, or holding down the left button until the list appears.
If you want the drop-down arrow you can add it with the Back/forward dropmarker add-on - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/backforward-dropmarker

All files saved as html doc will save as firefox html doc which keeps me from opening this file in any other browser. This happens no matter which text editor I use. How do I save html docs without the firefox logo.

Open the browser you want to use. click ctrl + O, browse to your file location and it will open your file.

  • HT201250 I want to use my NAS device as the place where i backup my laptop data using time machine.  How do i do this?

I have the new generation macbook air.  i want to backup my data on my laptop to a NAS drive.  how do i do this?  how do i setup time machine to do this?

I found this link on Synology's website that might help. Note: in lookong through Synology's information you need to create a dedicated share for Time Machine, if you have a share that you are using for other purposes it can't be used for Time Machine.
In step 3, to make sure Apple Talk services are enable go to the Sharing preference pane -> Options and make sure the "Share files and folders using AFP" is checked.

  • I want to use my iphone as a storage device - any tips?

    Hello
I have files which i need to take to work tomorrow on my computer at home.  I don't have a USB flash drive and wish to use my iPhone 3GS to achieve this simple task.  What I have in mind is allocating, say, 4GB of space to store files on and being able to read them just like a normal USB when i plug it into a computer.
I cannot anywhere on the apple site find instructions to do this (closest I get is doing this with an iPod).
I googled this and read a rumour that apple effectively dissallows this - if this is true, what possible benefit could this have?
    Any advice would be great!

    StinkyPete wrote:
Be good if Apple could add this so it is native to the system - a function which i really need! (wireless and dropbox style transfer doesn't suit me at all).
Part of the problem is a quirk in the way the Mac handles volumes. You have to manually dismount them or OS X complains about possible disk catalog damage. Older iPods, like my original iPod shuffle, do have the ability to have space set aside for disk use and I used to have mine set up that way before USB sticks got so much bigger that I started transferring data on those instead. But the tradeoff is that if you set up that iPod to be used as a disk, you must manually dismount it before disconnecting the USB cable. Apple seems to have decided that customers would like the convenience of being able to disconnect an iPhone at any time with no extra steps, but this requires disabling the disk access feature.
I think that is not the only reason, though. As above I think that Apple wants to discourage alternate ways of getting software onto the iPhone, as a security measure. But the file system is not really "secured and non-accessible" as there are plenty of apps out there that will let you access it. In the end what Apple is doing is a little confusing to a lot of people.
Some people are wondering if a USB flash drive would be cheaper. Sure, it would be. But that is not the point. I understand that it's a hassle to carry around One More Device. That's why we take pictures with iPhones instead of bringing a point-and-shoot, because after a while our pockets start feeling heavy. At least a flash drive is small. But on the other hand I'm always forgetting which room I left it in. I always know where my iPhone is...

  • I am pretty sure my video card has gone bad in my macbook pro, I want to retrieve data before replacing it.  Is this possible?

My video card has failed and I want to retrieve photos.  Can this be done?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
I wouldn't worry about that. Take your Mac to an Apple Store or reseller and let them repair your Mac. If it's a GPU failure, your hard drive is OK, and you will have the same hard drive with the same data after getting the MacBook Pro repaired.
However, it's recommended to make a backup. As you can't start up your Mac, what you can do is to take out the hard drive and connect it to another Mac through a USB to SATA adapter, so you can recover your files
