Yes, unless a problem occurs. Back them up first.

  • Updated to Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard problems

I update to Mac OS X 10.6.3 Snow Leopard and something is running big time.
system hiccups all the time! The color wheel spins all the time. Have done all HD repairs.

I think Hazem is off track, as the SL installer will do a file system check before installing. If there were hard drive problems, it wouldn't have let you install it. This is new in the SL installer, and a very nice feature.
Generally, if you reinstall the system and continue having problems, you've got one of two possible problems. First, you didn't do it right and reinstalled some incompatible software or imported some damaged settings. Second possibility, you have a hardware problem.
Only you can know if the first option is a real possibility. To rule out software, you have to erase the hard drive and start from scratch. Reinstall any applications from scratch, from the original installers, and only add the ones you absolutely can't do without at first, then add the others slowly. Don't import any settings from the previous system, don't import your entire home folder. Only copy your documents from a backup, and rebuild any settings from scratch.
Regarding hardware, it could be that your drive is failing in such a way that it might pass a file system check but have sporadic problems. Open Disk Utility and select the hard drive, which will have a name like "500 GB blah", not the volume, which is indented underneath the drive and has the name you see on the desktop. Once you have selected the drive, look at the bottom of the window and make sure SMART status is "Verified."
Next, try running [Apple Hardware Test|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509]. Also, even if AHT gives your RAM a pass, you should consider running [Rember|http://www.kelleycomputing.net/rember> to test your RAM. This won't rule out everything, but may give you some answers.

  • Can I still update to mac os x 10.6 snow leopard?

Is there anyway to update to snow leopard still, so I can eventually get to mountain lion? I have been looking all day but I am not having any luck. Thank you.

Call 1-800-MY-APPLE to purchase a Snow Leopard DVD. You must have an Intel based Mac to install SL. If your Mac is a G5 or earlier of any model, you're stuck at 10.5.x.

  • HT2311 i want to update my mac o s x to snow leopard

    i want to up grade my mac o s x it is a 10.5.8
i cant seem to find it in i tunes to add to my system

To upgrade to Snow Leopard, you must purchase the install DVD from Apple.
Once you get to Snow Leopard, you will have another App Store outside of iTunes for the Mac.
Everything in iTunes is for iOS and only runs on iPhones, iPads or iPods.

  • Xcode Tools will not update under Mac OS X 10.7

After upgrading to Mac OS X 10.7 on a new Mac Mini, I attempted to update my other software thru the App Store.  When I attempt to update Xcode I get the following message: "Xcode 4.0.2 requires Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.  Install the Xcode Tools version that supports Mac OS X 10.7 Lion."  I can find no update on App Store that will accomplish this task.  The one entry in App Store I can find for Xcode just attempts to install and produces the message above.  How do I get the lastest version?

I figured out what MAS was minute or two ago... after searching over and over at apple.com in the downloads section and finding more than 150 hits at one time, nothing for xcode AND download AND lion (and also substituting 10.7 instead of lion). None of the 150 hits dealt with xcode itself.
Another search for xcode (all by itself) came up with 4 items only talking about webobjects.
It wasn't until I finally went to the main apple page, clicked on Mac, at the bottom Developer -> Mac Program, then at the bottom, XCode 4 developer preview, then I finally found "View in Mac App Store" (so I found out what MAS was).
When I clicked the View link, Lion had to be told what app it should use to view the page!
My download is apparently done now, so I think I'll go install it.
What a chore! Had I been thinking, I could have just started up the app store from my dock! (I don't think I did that with Snow Leopard... which was another arduous project.) I rarely use the app store. I spend more time trying to figure out how to use what I've already got!
Do I need to uninstall my xcode 3.x first or will it just be replaced?
    Thanks for the reply.

  • If I update to Snow Leopard, will final cut pro still work?

If I update to Snow Leopard, will final cut pro still work? My current version of Final Cut Pro is 6.0.6. Thanks.

Apple is not telling you the Complete story about Lion.
The installer for FCP 6 is Power PC code/ IBM CPU code, which Lion does not support.
FCP 6 is NOT Power PC code, it will run on Lion and Mountain Lion, as I have read on many posts.
    The solution??
Solution condition where FCP 6 installed and upgrading OS to Lion
Do nothing, its already running OK
Solution condition where FCP 6 not installed and OS Lion installed.
Connect a firewire drive to your MAC and install the old OS on it (eg snow leopard) ,
    Reboot to that OS
    Install FCP 6
Reboot to your new OS   (EG Lion)
    Run FCP 6

  • If i have a macbook and i'm only updated to Mac OS X version 10.5.8, can i still update my software? to o

can i update to mountain lion from my software of Mac OS X 10.5.8, if so, how?

you can, the trick is finding a copy of snow leopard to intall on your mac first, then you will be able to purchase the downloads from the appstore to complete the update.
however i'm not entirely sure as to where you would find a copy of snow leopard at this point :S
Actually found one on amazon just really expensive
    http://www.amazon.com/Mac-version-10-6-3-Snow-Leopard/dp/B001AMHWP8
Actually did some more research you can by one buy calling 1-800-MY-APPLE for around 29.99

To get iLife and iWork. If you only want iPhoto or other single apps from iLife '11 you can get them from the App Store after you've upgraded to 10.6.6. iPhoto, iMovie or Garage Band for $15 each and Pages, Keynote or Numbers from iWork '09 for $20 each.
Once you are at 10.6.8 you can buy Lion for $29 from the App Store. Lion will require at least 2gb of RAM but really needs 4gb to run smoothly.
As for third party programs see this list for compatibility with 10.7 http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
Also Lion doesn't run any Power PC programs. To see if you have any Power PC programs go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up select Applications under Software. Then look under Kind to see if any of your applications are listed as Power PC. Universal and Intel will run under Lion.

If I upgrade from 10.5.8 (Leopard) to 10.6.5 (Snow Leopard) will I have to reinstall all of my applications? Along with that, will it update all of my applications?

You can upgrade 10.6 right over 10.5 with hardly any issues.
You will not have to resintall any applications, and the only applicaitons that get updates are the bundled one's Apple includes. Not your third party ones, those require your manual updates, but likely not paid updates for the most part.
10.6 is for Intel processors, offeres video card driver improvements, some new UI tweaks and strips out the PPC processor code your not using.
Your sort of already using Snow Leopard already under Leopard, as Leopard is for both Intel and PPC processors.
Now if your thinking of updating to 10.6 to get to 10.7, then yes, your older programs from Leopard and even some from Snow Leopard will not work in Lion 10.7
So 10.6 is as far as you go.

Try resetting your SMC and NVRAM before attempting to install again.
    Resetting the NVRAM/PRAM
Note: This will not delete any data.
The NVRAM/PRAM stores information such as speaker volume, screen resolution, startup disk selection, and recent kernel panic information (if any). You should reset the NVRAM/PRAM if you experience issues relating to these functions.
Shut down the computer by going to Apple () > Shut Down…
Select Shut Down or allow the computer to shut down automatically.
Turn on the computer by pressing the Power Button.
On the built-in keyboard, press and hold the Command (⌘), Option (⌥), P, and R keys before the gray screen appears.
Continue to hold down the keys until the computer restarts and you hear the startup chime for the second time.
Release the keys on the built-in keyboard.
Resetting the SMC of an Intel-based portable Mac with a battery you should not remove on your own
Note: This will not delete any data.
The SMC is responsible for controlling various system functions. None of your data will be deleted by resetting the SMC.
Shut down the computer by going to Apple () > Shut Down…
Select Shut Down or allow the computer to shut down automatically.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter into a power source and then connect it to your Mac if you have not already done so.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift (⇧), Control (⌃), and Option (⌥) keys and the Power Button at the same time.
Release the (left side) Shift (⇧), Control (⌃), and Option (⌥) keys and the Power Button at the same time.
    I hope I helped.

  • Can I update from osx 10.4.11 to snow leopard?

I have a mac book pro with OSX 10.4.11 and would like to upgrade it to OSX Snow Leopard.  Can I simply proceed or is there an in between update necessary?  Thanks.
    Mbota2

Purchase a Snow Leopard DVD with which you can upgrade your current system.  Before upgrading do the following:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
If all is OK then continue with the installation of Snow Leopard.

  • HT4592 My Mac OS X 10.5 Snow Leopard is missing Java, any suggestion to restore?

I am experiencing problem in getting any Java chart on a webpage, which suggested me to download Java Virtual Machine. My understanding is my Mac OS X10.5.8 Snow Leopard should have come bundled with Java. Appreciate any suggestion to rectify this. Thank you very much in advance.

Make sure to ask for the 10.6.7 version as they sent me 10.6.3 which has no App Store that is needed to install Lion, or Mountain Lion. They said it is in the update but I just updated and still no App Store visible. Argh! You have to get the Snow Leopard Disk via mail but will be able to download Lion and/or Mountain lion directly from the App Store, and why you need to make sure they send the correct version if you do order the SL disk. Just an FYI!:)
