IBook black screen, worrking computer

My iBook runs fine, except the screen is black. If I shine a bright light on the screen, I can see the dock, folders, etc., and they all work. The machine does everything it is supposed to do, except the screen is not illuminated. It isn't a matter of angle. I've tried adjusting the brightness, and it neither dims nor lightens. I can put the computer to sleep and it awakens fine, except for the black screen. This has just begun. The computer worked fine this morning. There was no trauma to cause the computer to stop working correctly, nor introduction of new software, although all the software updates from Apple are current. I use it to go online, period. There are no peripherals attached. The battery is fully charged; I use it about half the time with the power cable attached. I checked the energy settings and sleep options. Everything is normal. Can anyone suggest a cause, and a solution, hopefully something simple like a setting needs to be tweeked. I've read other posts in which logic boards and PRAM settings were disussed, but in those instances, it seemed like an issue with sleep or angle. Those don't apply here. Help.

hi, most likely the problem is the LCD's backlight. Majority of the time is the faulty inverter; which you can buy on Ebay for around $40. The inverter is very sensitive. Handle it only when you properly grounded.

  • Ibook black screen

Hi everyone ! I've got a huuuuuuuge problem with my ibook, and I think I know where it comes from, but I'd like to be sure, as I'm not a pro, I might find some answers here... I've used my ibook this morning (1,33 Ghz, SD), and it worked perfectly fine. I closed it, so it switched to sleep mode. I tried to open it at the beginning of the afternoon, and boom, nothing... The screen refused to switch on. Without panicking, I tried to reboot my computer, and just after having hit the start button, the fans started to work really loud, for a second or two, then stopped and the usual start up sound rang, without any change on the screen. So I tried to reboot in safe mode, no result. I tried to reboot after having unplugged the 512 Mo of RAM I had added a few months ago. It worked (I felt relieved for a few minutes), but I rebooted just to check, and black screen again. Then I tried to reboot and zap the pram. I obtained the strangest result : the screen went red, then green, then blue, and then different shades of grey to finish on black. And the cycle kept returning in that precise order. I forgot to say that after having removed the added RAM, it worked, allright, then I rebooted and tried to press at the same time on the left part, beside the trackpad. The screen went grey, then went all weird and started to "flicker"... My serial number does not meet the logic board changing program requirements, and the first year anniversary was three weeks ago... If someone has a clue, a solution... (other than changing the logic board of course... 500€...) Thanx !

Thank you for your answer. I've called them today, and they told me that my warrenty was no longer active. So I refused to pay for the telephone assistance, which is useless in my case, as I think the problem comes from the hardware... I'll try anyway to find an apple certified store, as we in France don't have any apple store or real apple center...

  • Magsafe Causes black screen. Computer unusable!

    Hello All,
My Macbook is driving me crazy. If I plug in the magsafe connector it will start to charge and then when it feels necessary at any given moment boom. BLACK Screen. The computer sounds like its still on but it wont do anything and the screen is black it is totally unresponsive to anything. The only way to get it back on is to hold the power button down for a few. I have followed apple directions to reset PRAM and SMC etc. On battery it works fine, The minute i plug in the magsafe boom gone, or sometimes it will appear to be charging and then within a few mins BLACK Screen.
I have 2 power adapters and this happens with both. This is a new issue. I never had RSS until now if this is it. My macbook is fully up to date on all patches and it just came back less than 2 months ago from repairs to the superdrive.
If anyone has any ideas or can help I would greatly apreciate it. I love this thing but this isnt quite the " MAC " experience I was looking for

I've had the same type of situation with my old PowerBook G4 Titanium. It would sometimes wake from sleep, but the display wouldn't come back on. I never did figure out what the problem was. Like I said, your best bet is probably to take it in for inspection and possible servicing, as annoying as that sounds.

  • Black Screen after computer boots to Win XP With NX6600 VTD 256

My son recently purchased a new computer and gave his old one to me to salvage what I wanted.Since he just a few months ago purchased my NX6600 VTD 256 from me I naturally salvaged that first. I tried to install the NX6600 in my other son's computer without success. First the particulars:
MSI 845 Pro2 Mobo, 512 mb 133 Mhz Ram, 1.7 Ghz Intel CPU, Aopen AO350 12A PNF power supply, 350 watts with 18 amps on the 12 volt rail.
I did a fresh install of winXP on a freshly formatted HDD. Installed service pack 2, the latest intel drivers, and 5 different versions of the driver packages including ver 77.77 all with the same results.
After the computer boots I am intermittantly faced with a black screen after the WinXP logo disappears. This sometimes happens 3 times in a row before I get a working screen. After a good boot the NX6600 benchmarks good with very good marks!
I am at this point strongly suspecting the power supply is not up to the task, even though the specs for the NX6600 recommend a 350 watt power supply.  Before I start removing all the hardware from the computer except for the NX 6600 to see if I have a hardware conflict, I doubt this because with the NX6600 installed without drivers I get a good boot every time.
    I'm open for suggestions.

Thanks for the reply boss killer.
I tried what you suggested with a CRS power supply 300 watts with 15 amps on the 12 volt rail.
    with the exact same results.
I then put the crs powersupply back into #1 son's old case reinstalled the nx6600 and gave it a go
Particulars for the old computer ECS K7VTA3 ver. 1 Mobo with 512 Mb DDR, nx6600VTD256 vid card and the CRS Power supply 300 watts with 15 amps on the 12 volt rail , and win XP pro service pack 2.
Funny the card works great without any problems with this setup! And the powersupply is 50 watts less and only 15 amps as compared to the other with 18!
I then pulled all the hardware out of #2's computer and tried it with only the memory, cpu, and NX6600 connected.
I had to boot 5 times before I had a working screen.
Now I'm thinking that there is somthing amiss with the NX6600 and the MSI 845 Pro2 ???
I'm thinking that I would be better off installing the K7VTA3 in #2 son's computer with the NX6600, since this works fine. When I did a benchmark with this setup it outperformed the *45 Pro 2 NX6600 combination By 300 points 2600 as compared to 2300 aqua mark points.
    Isn't this fun?

  • Black screen with computer working

    Hello,
    I've an iMac mid 2011, 27''.
I got an issue that couldn't figure it out, even testing a lot from what a read on the internet!
It has started as blinking screen, going from dark (not complete black) to normal bright... witch lasted seconds blinking fast.
Then from a few month to here, the screen completely blanks out with the computer working fine... if connect to a TV, i can it working and test every thing...
Now every time i turn the computer on, i need to do a PRAM reset...
At start up, the gray screen most times blinks from dark gray to light gray, with no prompt sound and before the computer finish loading the screen goes black again!
    Thx in anticipation!

Sorry for not answering sooner, and thx for the reply BDAqua!
Can't see the faint desktop, it really seams that only the display is off...
Another think to notice is that when I'm reinstalling the software (mountain lion, always updated, and the problem had started with OS 10.7) or try in find a hardware problem (with the Command + D hardware test, that takes almost 1 h to complete, with my 2tb hd) the display never seems to turn off...
I really can't figure out, but some time i suspect a HD problem, because of it's noise and since i had problems with it before...
    Thx again!

  • G4 ibook Black Screen and "Fan of Death"

(Posted last night. Removed for unspecified reasons. edited so is within terms of use and reposted).
My 2nd ibook just died. Treated it like a baby never dropped on it's head or anything, and yesterday it suddenly decided to play up.
    So what happened?
Well I'm sitting there with the 12" G4 ibook on my lap and blink the screen goes black, power still on, backlighting still on, but no display. Hmmm.
Ok let's not panic, turned off, waited, then turned on again.
Nothing! No image no start-up, except the rear fans going at MAX SPEED.
Turned it off **** quick. Turned on...same thing Whirrrrrr!
This continues until finally machine stays on. For 2-3 minutes that is, then blink the screen blacks out again, no beachball nothing just off!
Ever since then nothing but the fan! No start-up screen nothing.
So I start reasearching, and turns out a LOT of people have been experiencing the exact same problem. Okay now I'm freakin'
I read more and there it is a website explaining the situation: (link removed in case this is frowned upon).
Suggests there may be a batch manufactured around the same time in late '04 - '05, that have faulty soldering on a chip just to the laft of the trackpad. I don't know but I'm not impressed as I went through this with the G3 ibook this replaced which was part of the batch with the faulty logicboards.
Thankfully Apple eventually acknowledged the problem there and my and other peoples G3 ibooks were fixed, but this time the're saying there's no problem! I am unimpressed.
It's not right that I buy TWO ibooks only to have them BOTH die after a couple of years of careful use. Not right at all!! The ingenious remedy put forward by others with the same problem is applying a lot of pressure to the casing in that spot to force the chip to make a connection to the solder(?!), perhaps even using a clamp to keep it held down.
Guess what I tried it, palm down max pressure, and IT WORKS! Take my hand away and Zzzt screen off and back to square one. The alternative and only official avenue to resolve the problem? BUY A NEW LOGICBOARD?!?!
I have a Mac Mini, iMac and 3 iPods so you know I love you're work Apple, but there are limits to what a person can reasonably put up with! At this stage after being twice burnt with your notebooks I'm VERY hesitant about repeating the mistake.
Finding an email link on your site so I can lodge my issue has proved impossible. Hopefully I'll get a response other than a deletion.
Reading others posts, at present more than 2000 people have enquired about the same problem, and an independant body has verified the problem (complete with macro photos of the cracked soldering), so this is hardly an anomoly! All I want is a sign you are taking this seriously.
    Sincerely,
    W.Whatford
    Australia.

I helped my friend fix his 2 year old iBook that had the same problem.
We found information on the probable cause after doing some Google searching on phrases such as "G4 iBook logic board". It was one or 2 solder joints that had gone bad, connecting a chip to the logic board. It's a 28 pin chip, the Intersil ISL6225 power controller, the suspect pin is most likely #28 and maybe adjacent pins, and maybe #1. If you search around you can find more information.
We decided to try to fix it ourselves. We partly disassembled the iBook to the point where we could remove the bottom half of the white plastic shell case. You can find WWW guides on doing this. We used an old 35mm camera lens reversed to act as a high-powered magnifying glass to study the chip pin solder joints. Using a small soldering iron we attempted to re-solder one of the pins, which appeared to have come loose possibly due to repeated on/off heating cycles or a cold solder joint. We just reheated the suspect solder joints and did not add new solder, as this was the advice on another forum. However the iBook still had the same problem afterward and pin 28 seemed to be loose, although it is difficult to see, you really need a mucroscope.
Then we decided to take the iBook to a friend who had lots of experience repairing small circuit boards. He used a soldering iron and some solder to re-solder several of the chip pins and then used a special "de-soldering" braid wire to remove the excess solder that was now connecting together some of the chip pins. He heated the chip pins for about 5 seconds and was fairly rough with the board in applying pressure. He told us that these small chips can take more heat than you might expect, and the logic boards are strong and it's pretty hard to damage them by bending them a little or by touching a connection.
We fired up the iBook again and it now works! It has been OK for about a week. We're hoping it will last a few more years, or until the next MacBook becomes too hard to resist.
BTW taking apart and later re-assembling the case is tricky and we ended up scratching it up a little at the joint line (there are downloadable manuals that can help with this). But the iBook was dead before and now it works so it was worth it.

  • Qosmio: X505-Q890 Black Screen BUT Computer has not crashed

I have a Qosmio: X505-Q890, my screen goes black after a few minutes.  But if you look at it on an angle you can see screen and mouse moving around.  I am assuming that the backlights are going out on screen.  What is the fix.  I am capabale of dissasembling laptop and repairing.  What parts do I need to fix?
    Thanks
    Greg

It could be either the inverter or the backlight, but it's hard to know for sure. It could also be a loose cable, but that seems less likely to me (although it might be easier to check).

  • Black screen on startup after installing security updates KB293357 and KB2937610 on Win 7 64bit

After installing security updates KB293357 and KB2937610 (both related to .NET) on Win 7 Enterprise 64 bit, my computer fails to start up correctly:
    - start up and windows boot screen
    - then black screen and computer freezes
The only option to this problem I found so far is do a cold reboot and then let system repair uninstall the updates. Is there a better way to solve this problem?
    System:
    Asus UL80VT laptop
NVIDIA GeForce G210M (driver version 9.18.13.2702)
    Win 7 Enterprise, fully updated

    Hi,
After you unstall the two updates, does the black screen issue completely disappear? We should first figure out whether the two updates are the culprits.
Since the two updates are related with .net as you mentioned, then here's a .NET Framework Repair Tool released by Microsoft, I suggest you try it and check if it cna detect something.

Since it will not boot then a hardware test can't be run. You could try FireWire Target Disk Mode and if it works then access from another Mac to run tests on the new drive. You could also try installing the OS X software from the host computer. If this does not work then professional help should be considered.

  • IBook will not start up - solid black screen

I am in love with my iBook and have not had a single problem with it the first sixteen months I had it. This morning I was using it and everything was fine, I put it to sleep, then it fell from a desk onto my foot. It fell at an angle, but my foot broke the fall. After that it does not start up, but remains in a solid black screen. The caps lock and number lock lights change when the appropriate buttons are pushed, but the power button does nothing, there is no sound, no fan, nothing.
When the battery is in, the power cord light is amber, but when I remove the battery, it goes to green. I have tried starting with the battery in and without it. The computer is slightly warm on the bottom. Also, the four lights on the battery are constantly lit, which I never noticed before.
Naturally I created an iMovie for a Christmas gift that I have not yet burned, so I want to resolve this asap.
Please offer suggestions! I'm not the most technically minded person, so layman's terms would be much appreciated. I looked through 20some pages of posts, but none of the suggestions seemed to help.
I do have the disks that came with the computer, but when I tried to insert a dvd, the computer would not even accept it all the way and did nothing to respond.
    Thanks for any suggestions!

    Cricket419,
    Welcome to the forum.
I was told I can never buy one. Ever. Nice customer service there. I'm sure they know the majority of the warranties are never used, so I was offering pure profit for basically nothing on their part. As much as I love my computer, I'll think twice next time if this is how they respond to customers' requests to purchase additional items.
On the other hand; the flip-side of the coin as it were, there's this post from someone with a totally opposite experience from you:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=1348953#1348953
Specifically the following, from The TKDKid:
He spoke to the store manager, who authorized an exchange for a brand new one. They asked me if I could leave it for a couple of hours, and transferred all my files and personal settings to the new one. I was very pleased with the service I got.
I'm glad that your iBook is working again. With regards to AppleCare we all have 1 year from the date of purchase to buy it. It's up to us to decide and to remember to buy AppleCare during this period should we choose to do so. If we forget, then it's our fault and we have to own the fact that it's our fault, accept it and move on. It's not Apple's responsibily or fault.
If you have Home Contents Insurance then an option for you is to add the iBook to the items covered. Some (most?) home contents insurances automatically include repairs/replacement to computer damage (including any damage caused by accident). That would solve your cover queries. Wouldn't it?

  • IBook G4 screen goes black, suddenly doesn't recognize input

Last night I was using my ibook in the usual manner, in the middle of sending a file to a friend, when my screen went black as if it were going into a screen saver, but wouldn't respond. The backlight was still on, but it seemed to be frozen. I force shut it down, tried to turn it back on. The backlight came on, and it seemed to be starting up, but no picture appeared. Tried again. The second time it didn't turn the backlight on at all, and wouldn't respond. I figured maybe it had just overheated. I let it rest for a couple of hours, then tried again. This time it went to the startup screen, and I figured it was alright and had just overheated or something. But a few minutes after I entered my password and it loaded my desktop and everything, it went back into the backlit black screen. I left it off for the night because I wasn't sure what was happening.
This morning I turned it on and the first time, the backlight turned on, but no activity. The second time, the backlight wouldn't turn on. Same thing the third time. Decided to try to boot off the install cd, and though it didn't boot from it, it started up fine and things seem to be working so far. I'm just afraid it's going to happen again. Does anyone have any suggestions?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I've had to rely on keeping it plugged in for power for the last 2.5 years or so since my battery no longer holds a charge.
Please buy a new battery. You owe it to your computer and to yourself. Even though it will run when plugged into household electricity, that is not how the computer was designed to operate.
Also, if I look close enough at the screen, I can make out the desk top slightly; it's like the brightness is setting is way low, when it is actually on the brightest setting. The screen goes black in the same way if I leave the computer on, but unattended for like 5 minutes.
Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Energy Saver and check the settings under the Power Adapter tab as well as the Battery tab. You may want to reset the Power Adapter so that the monitor stays on for longer.
