  • Strange iBook G3 battery issue

I have an iBook G3 FireWire model which won't recognise its battery. It displays as 5% charged with the "fully charged" icon next to it and the menu saying "Calculating... until full." Unplugging the computer will force it to shut down. The computer's optical drive is broken, so I had to install Tiger via USB. The first time, it worked just fine, charging the battery as normal. The problem arose when I installed some updates (I think it was the 10.4.11 Combo updater) and shut down. Upon restart, it never reached the "Starting Mac OS X" screen, just staying on a light blue screen with a perpetually spinning wheel. After attempting multiple restarts, I unplugged the computer while it was on said screen, and it lost all power just as it does now. I reinstalled Tiger with the same USB and disk image the next day. Both http://reviews.ebay.com/iBook-Clamshell-Battery-Issue?ugid=10000000007193925 and booting into Open Firmware and entering the commands reset-nvram, then set-defaults, then reset-all yield the same result: it will charge to 13%, then stop and say "Calculating... until full." The charger is known to be working, it charges my PowerBook just fine.

The typical lifespan of a lithium-ion battery is two to three years. Some last a little longer; some don't even last that long.
    It needs a new battery.
Which exact iBook model is it?
You can choose from this list:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/ibook/index-ibook.html
It would seem that it is recognizing the battery; it's just not charging. If an iBook doesn't recognize the battery, there will be an X through the battery icon in the menu bar and the System Profiler wouldn't give you the battery information; it would say "Battery Installed: No".

  • 14" ibook replacement battery

I need to replace my 14" ibook G3 battery does anyone have any experience with 3rd party batteries? I'm debating on an Apple battery or 3rd party any suggestions would be appreciated.

No personal experience, but the best price I've found on a replacement battery is at Power Gears.

  • Replacement ibook g4 battery doesn't fit: compatibility issue or defect?

The battery in my 14"  iBook g4 stopped holding a charge, so I ordered a replacement through Ebay where it was listed as an Apple battery for a 14" iBook.  Once it arrived I saw that it was labeled as Model No. A1062, whereas my old battery was an A1080.  They looked identical externally so far as I could see, but I can't make the  A1062 fit into its slot--one corner stays elevated.  Have I just ordered the wrong thing--are A1062 and A1080 supposed to be incompatible? Or is there something wrong with the battery?
    Any advice greatly appreciated.

They should be the same.  But due to a recall on those batteries, you may have just bought a swolen battery from someone.  http://www.macsales.com/ and http://www.welovemacs.com/ both try to stock the real McCoy.

  • I have no life in my ibook G4 battery!

Hi i had a problem with my G4 battery as it would only run when on charge. Now it appears i can no longer do that does anyone know where i could buy a cheaper replacement battery and is there a specfic model i need? Thank you very much an ibook amateur

    Cheaper = www.eBay.com
Yes you need a specific kind based on the model battery you have. Look at the model number on the back of the battery.
Then match up the numbers for instance on the eBay listings they give you all the compatible model numbers.

  • IBook 4 battery will not charge

I recently bought a gently used iBook G4 (14.1 1.33) with OS X v10.3.9froma friend. When I bought it the battery was fully charged and working but it has since stopped sharging. I have reset the PMU, NVRAM, PRAM, the adapter light is green, and, when I push the battery button, one light flashed green 12-15 times then stops. The onscreen indicator says the battery is at 0% charge.
Any ideas how to get it charging again?
    Thanks,
    Buckyno2

I'm trying to figure out if the battery on my ibook G4 is dying. I bought a new adapter and the charge will not go past 75%.I did replace the battery during the recall.
Below is the info. on my battery.
    "IOBatteryInfo" = ({"Capacity"=3376,"Amperage"=0,"Cycle Count"=33,"Current"=2552,"Voltage"=12483,"Flags"=1090519045,"AbsoluteMaxCapacit y"=4400})
    | | | | "IOBatteryInfo" = ({"Capacity"=3376,"Amperage"=0,"Cycle Count"=33,"Current"=2552,"Voltage"=12483,"Flags"=1090519045,"AbsoluteMaxCapacit y"=4400})
If it is not the battery or the new adapter, why won't it charge?

  • Ibook clamshell battery issue

Here's my issue: I was given a blue clamshell ibook to "fix" for a friend of mine who wants to use it to only surf the internet. They couldn't get it to turn on, it gave them a weird message and come to find out they had had it for a year and hadn't turned it on so the battery didn't charge. So I kept it plugged in and ended up having to reinstall the os 9.2 system, but then the battery wouldn't keep a charge, but the system would work when it was plugged in. So I ordered a battery off of ebay that said it was a "new" battery. I popped out the old battery and put in the new battery yesterday after getting it in the mail and I now have a "red X" over the battery and it said the system had reset to 1904. So I fixed the date and shut it down, but left the computer plugged in overnight but when I turned it on this morning it still had the red x, so I've left it plugged in turned the computer over, took out the battery and put it back in and restarted, but still the red x and nothing. So I'm thinking either their is a reset battery button I don't know about or the battery I got from ebay is bad even though they said it was new. Any help would be appreciated.

The iBook does not have a PRAM battery,
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA25911?viewlocale=en_US
so if your main battery doesn't hold a charge your date/time settings are lost.
If your iBook is connected to the internet you can automatically synchronize the Date/time settings with the apple server: Choose Apple menu > System Preferences and click Date & Time.

  • IBook G4: battery doesn't charge

After about seven years my iBook battery had lost stamina. (Although there was still more than an hour of energy left after charging it.)
After buying a new one (Dill-5200mAh) I was pleased to get a battery capacity for more than five hours. Unfortunately things changed after about 20 load cycles. Now when I try to charge it, the plug soon turns from amber to green although the battery still has only a very low capacity.
According to 'coconutBattery'  the capacity is brilliant (5363mAh).
I also found out that charging seems to work while iBook is switched on.
    Any idea?

    Hello,
There are a few thing here.
    1. Could be a faulty battery. I want out rule that.
    2. It could be a problem with your power adapter.
    3. Could be an internal problem.
I would check the power adapter and then check the Battery both with a replacement. (or spare)
If you get the same results, then it's  internal fault and do doubt lays with the DC In board.

  • How to store G3 iBook and battery long term

Need to leave our old G3-500Mhz white iBook for many months at a time. (1) Do I remove the battery when it has about 50% charge or ? (2) Do I leave the iBook plugged into an a/c power supply or disconnected?
    Many thanks.

dga1966, Welcome to the discussion area!
Apple recommends (http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html): If you don’t plan on using your notebook for more than six months, Apple recommends that you remove and store the battery with a 50% charge.
BTW, this is the iBook G4 discussion area.

  • IBook blueberry Battery Problem since Upgrading from 10.3 to 10.3.9

Hi, although I read through the tons of posts regarding this subject, the offerred solutions did not help.
I reseted the PMU, I tried running Battery Reset under 9.2, I recalibrated the BatteryManager so far I could, I drowned the Battery - still: The Battery has 0% and is "charging". but the iBook does not work running only on battery.
Is this software related, so that I have to go back to something earlier than 10.3.9?
The battery is fine and working when used under 9.2 and 10.3. Is it impossible to use 10.3.9?
    Thanks for your help!!!

Hi Sue, Are you using the iMac install disc on your iBook? The firmware on the iBook is different and will not be reconized. Did you migrate your iBook to your iMac? I can run a clone of my iMac on my iBook with no problems via firewire. So I think it is possible to do a restore from your iMac to your iBook and upgrade that way...But make a back up just in case!!!!

  • How many cycles should ibook G4 battery last for?

I got my ibook last year right before school started and still love it. The only problem is the battery seems to be dying on me. I've heard that the batteries should last about 2 years or maybe a little less.
Mine says its gone through about 270 cycles, and it dies in about 5-10 minutes without being plugged in now, even with the screen brightness on the lowest and energy saver being used etc...
I just wanted to know if this is common or if it isnt how I would go about getting a new battery because I dont have the $ to pay for one unfortunately but I need my ibook for schoolwork.

    Welcome to Discussions!
Apple's batteries are designed to hold upto 80% of their charge after 300 cycles. Of course, its "upto", and not guaranteed.
You can try this to see if you can't get a little bit more out of it: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86284

  • Sudden drop in iBook g4 battery life?

My wife's iBook G4 maintained a truly stellar battery performance from purchase to sometime last week, regularly delivering between 3 and 4 hours per charge. Sometime last week, that changed very suddenly and dramatically to just over 30 minutes.
While gradually declining battery life is the norm, such a precipitous decline makes me very strongly suspect that the battery is still holding a charge in line with the battery's track record and that the low-charge message is some sort of bug.
Is there any record of such an issue, how do I verify or dismiss my suspicions, and what might account for a sudden loss of over three hours of charge time?

    Hi Mike,
Difficult to say without knowing how old your wife's iBook is and how many charge cycles the battery has done. As I understand it, the loss of battery capacity due to age/charging cycles is non linear and that capacity can drop dramatically and suddenly after 2-3 yrs/300-500 charge cycles.
(Very vague, I know. Such is the nature of the beast.)
You have omitted to mention which OS is relevant but if your wife's iBook is running 10.4 the battery info can be obtained via the Apple menu>About this Mac>More info, then scroll down to Power.
If the OS is 10.3.x then open Terminal in Applications>Utilities and enter:
    ioreg -w0 -l|grep Capacity
and press return. (Works in 10.4 too…)
Either way, copy and paste the info into a reply here and someone will be able to give a more informed opinion.

  • How to replace an ibook 12" battery?

i just got an new battery, because the original is 2,5 years old an not running smoothly anymore. so far, so good! but i'd like to make sure i don't do anything STUPID when replacing the old one.

    ibook G3   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Hi, Chris. Welcome to Apple Discussions.
The first time out, you need to charge the battery all the way up as the first step in calibrating it.
After that, follow Apple's suggestions for getting the longest life and lifespan out of your battery:
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html
Technical information about the battery can be found here:
    http://www.apple.com/batteries/
Good luck with the new battery.

  • My ibook loses battery power when turned off and unplugged

I have been puzzled by this since November 2006. I calibrated my battery twice as prescribed and still, as soon as i shut down my ibook and unplug it, it's battery charge goes down. Why is this? I'd greatly appreciate help. I'm a former pc user and none of my pc laptops have this problem. I just want to know why my battery loss power when unplugged and turned off. thanks in advance

Well you might want to try what they call "battery reconditioning" which is 7 simple steps listed below:
    1: Charge your iPod fully.
2: Use it till you cant trun it on anymore!
3: Then carge your iPod fully again.
4: Then Use it till you cant trun it on anymore!
5: One more time charge your iPod fully.
6: And then again Use it till you cant trun it on anymore!
7: Then one last time charge it fully again.
Reminder: it is best to let the battery die all of the way each time inbetween chages. for example if it has 60% battery life dont charge it use it till it is dead and then charge it up all the way!
*This should inturn maximise your battey life also!*
