ICal "ghost" alarms

I previously set an alarm for a repeating monthly luncheon (event) that I was attending. The meeting was changed. I deleted the events from my iCal calendar. I later set a new repeating event with an alarm for the luncheon on the new day. Now I get two sets of alarms. One of the alarms is for the deleted events. The other is for the current correct events. I have gone back through every month of my calendar and can find no evidence of the older event that keeps alarming. I cannot find a way to display a list of events.
How can I get rid of the extra alarm? Is there a way to view just the events themselves in a separate window?
I want to avois deleting all alarms if possible.

Ahh, OK. I was picturing desktop alarms, which have a link.
Not solving the initial problem, but ... set up a group for the other attendees. Add the name of the group to the list of your email addresses on your contact card. When creating an email alarm select the group name and the alarm email will be sent to all.
Try running this script in Scrip Editor - it should list the start date of every recurring alarmed (email) event in your Home calendar (change the 3rd line if it is not Home). You may then be able to find the original event to delete it.

  • Ical message alarm pops up randomly

Out of the blue, the iCal message alarm constantly pops up randomly with no message. It doesn't show an event but instead it's blank so it's not reminding me of anything I have. Any suggestions as to how I can fix this?
    Thanks.

There was something similar to this recently. It turned out that the problem was caused by setting an alarm on a ToDo, then having a change of mind and unchecking the due date on the ToDo without first removing the alarm. If this could be the case for you, find the ToDo and delete it.

  • ICal/email alarm issue, please help if you can....

Hello. I am just starting to use iCal and have been setting email alarms to remind me of my iCal events. Here is the issue I am having, if mail is closed and the email alarm time has gone by, the email does not show up. Any ideas?
Another thing I noticed is that if I am on my computer, mail is closed, and an alarm time comes by - mail will open up on its own but an email never shows up in my inbox. Any ideas on this one?
    Thanks,
    Steve

Your problem is that the command you're trying to run includes spaces.
Spaces are used by the shell to delimit arguments, so when you say:
    script with command " sudo /Volumes/Adobe CS3 Design Premium/AdobeCS3/Setup.app/Contents/MacOS/Setup"
The shell sees this as the command 'sudo' with four arguments - "/Volumes/Adobe", "CS3", "Design", and "Premium/AdobeCS3/Setup.app/Contents/MacOS/Setup". It's no wonder it doesn't work.
You have a couple of options. One is to escape each of the spaces by preceeding them with a backslash. This tells the shell to treat the next character as a real character, not as a delimiter, e.g. "/Volumes/Adobe\ CS3\ Design\ Premium...". If you take this approach, though, you need to be aware that AppleScript also uses the backslash to escape characters, so you need to escape the backslash itself - the first one tells AppleScript to treat the second backslash as a literal, and so the shell sees the second backslash and can deal with the spaces:
    >do script "sudo /Volumes/Adobe\\ CS3\\ Design\\ Premium/AdobeCS3/Setup.app/Contents/MacOS/Setup --mode=silent --deploymentFile=/Volumes/Adobe\\ C3\\ Design\\ Premium/AdobeCS3/deployment/liteinstall.xml"
The other option is to use the 'quoted form of' a string. 'Quoted form' takes a string and makes it shell-safe:
    <pre class=command>tell application "Terminal"
set myCommand to "/Volumes/Adobe CS3 Design Premium/AdobeC3 blah blah blah"
do script "sudo " & quoted form of myCommand
    end tell</pre>
Depending on what else you're doing, you might also find it easier to eschew the Terminal altogether and just run the command directly via 'do shell script', but the same caveats apply.

  • New to iCal:  Audible alarms in iCal are not loud enough...

I'm getting a Verizon iPhone and will then use MobileMe to keep everything synced. Until now, I've only used the calendar features in regular phones (I've never had a smartphone). I've fumbled around with iCal some on my Mac, and it clearly will be easier to program events on it, and it has many customization features.
But, the problem is: I've been testing the alarm in iCal (by having it sound on my iMac since I don't yet have an iPhone), and it seems you can only have a brief audible alarm sound (for instance, the "Glass" or "Basso" sound option with the "Message with Sound" option). I'm used to the calendars on regular cell phones, which, while they aren't as customizable as the iCal events, do at least have a loud alarm that repeats much like a cell phone ringer. Is there something I can do in iCal to make its alarm louder and repetitive?
If I can't get a loud, repetitive alarm to sound with my iCal events, then it's really not going to work for me. The alarm will be going off on my iPhone and I will never hear it.

    The plot thickens ...
I just fixed my iCal sync problem with .Mac by refreshing .Mac with the data from my iMac and then syncing it to my iBook. Well, it finally worked, but surprise surprise, a few posts from my mobile/cell T610 appeared in the iBooks iCal, although they aren't in the iMac's iCal. So it seems like the events I have created on the T610 do transfer to the iMac -- it's just that they don't display in iCal. Or rather, in the syncing computer's iCal ...
What do you make of this?

  • Why doesn't iCal remember alarm settings for to-dos?

In iCal on Tiger, something I appreciated was that when I set an alarm for a "to-do" item, it remembered the last several choices I had made for alarms. This made setting an alarm quick, as I often use the same settings.
However, with Leopard (at least on my computer) I have to manually enter the alarm every time and there's no drop-down list of recently used choices. There does seem to be such a list for events, but not for to-dos. Does anyone else have this problem? Is there a setting I can change, or is this a flaw in the program?

But Firefox's implementation is much nicer since it seems to remember the zoom level for each domain you visit.
    Hi Thomas...
There's a Safari extension called, "Zoom by Site" that might work for you.
"ZoomBySite replaces the built-in zoom in Safari with a version that automatically restores the zoom level for each site with the settings from your last visit. This relieves you from having to Zoom In a few times each time you visit those sites with tiny fonts."
    Here's how to find it.
Click Safari from your Safari menu bar top of your screen. From the drop down menu click Safari > Extensions..
    Select Productivity on the left.
When you find Zoom by Site click Install Now.
To access that extension, back to your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab.

  • ICal default alarm

I have iCal preferences set up to automatically create an Alarm 15 minutes prior to the scheduled event. When an event is set up as "all-day", the alarm will go off at 11:45pm the prior day. This makes total sense on why Apple does this and it is pretty obvious that a user can change the alarm start time. However, if my preferences have been set up that my day starts at 8:00am and ends at 5:00 (my work day), wouldn't it make more sense that an event that you create as "all-day" default to an alarm start time of 8:00am (user start time preference) and not at midnight. Why would I want an alarm to go off at 11:45pm when I'm in bed sleeping? It would make more sense for the alarm to go off at 7:45 am (15 minutes prior to my day start preference).
is there a defaults write com.apple.iCal setting that I can change to make this happen?

No response from anyone from Apple on this. I did find that you can tell iCal to set a default alarm +- minutes. So If you set an all day event and want the alarm to go off at 8:00 am, you would go into iCal preferences and set default alarm to go off -480 minutes. That works good for all day events but the thing that stinks is when you go to set up a new event that only lasts from say 4:00pm - 5:00pm, this default setting will set an alarm 8 hours AFTER the time. Not what you really want. So, the answer I'm afraid is to go into each event that you need an alarm set, and change the alarm time manually. I'm hoping this will change in a future update due to the many MS people that don't like this default setting.

  • Certain iCal Event Alarms Not Working on iPhone

I have certain calendar event reminders that are not issuing on the iPhone (3GS, latest iOS 4.3.5) after syncing from iCal on the desktop with a CalDAV calendar running on Mac OS X 10.6 Server.
Most appointments do issue alerts properly, but I've noticed ones that have some or all of the following attributes are a problem:
1 - recurring on alternating weeks
2 - alarm set for day before the event (e.g. 7pm the night before or "5 hours before all-day event" as calendar sees it)
3 - alarms that do not conform to the short list of pre-set iPhone calendar alarms (5 min, 10 min, 15 min,... 2 hours before, 12 hours before)
I have a feeling it's #3 or a combination of all. I've tried deleting and re-adding the calendar on the iPhone. I've also verified that the time zones match between phone and desktop iCal. In my case, the alarm never happens for these specific events, not that it happens much later or something.
    Anyone experience this issue?
    Thanks

  • ICal event alarms aren't loud enough (and not long enough)...

I'm going to be getting my first smartphone very soon and am trying to decide which to get. I have an iMac, so I heavily favor the iPhone. But, I've run into a potential problem with Events in iCal:
I want to get an iPhone, use iCal for my schedule, and use MobileMe to keep everything synced. Until now, I've only used the calendar features in regular phones. I've been testing iCal on my Mac, and it clearly will be easier to program events into it.
My problem is iCal's audible alarm. I've been testing it by having it sound on my iMac (since I don't yet have an iPhone), and it seems you can only have a brief audible alarm sound (for instance, the "Glass" or "Basso" sound option with the "Message with Sound" option). I'm used to the calendars on regular cell phones, which have a loud alarm that repeats (like a cell phone ringer). Is there something I can do in iCal to make its alarm louder and repetitive on an iPhone?
I have a friend who has a droid phone and used the Google calendar. He says there is a setting on his phone (separate from the settings in Google's calendar) that lets him choose any ringer or .mp3 as the audible alarm for alerts from the Google calendar.
If I can't get a loud, repetitive alarm to sound on my iPhone with my iCal events, then it's really not going to work for me. The alarm will be going off on my iPhone and I will never hear it.
I know this question may be basic, but I really, really need an answer before I proceed (and I can't find the answer online). Thank you!

That is very surprising. Short of someone being able to recommend an app or other work around for this, the lack of such an audible alarm will rule the iPhone out for me. And I've waited a very long time for it to come to my carrier, so that is very disappointing.
It's really shocking to me that the designers wouldn't have started out by saying we need to have this smartphone incorporate every standard feature of previous regular phones. I had really not even thought that this could be a problem. I just stumbled on it and am astonished at the lack of a user ability to customize the alarm feature to a suitable sound.

  • ICal, iSync, Alarms, causing my palm Treo 650 not to update

    Hi All,
Looked around a bit and didn't see a solution to this issue and was hoping to find some information of confirm that it is a bug and I am not going crazy.
A couple days ago I noticed that the events I entered on my Treo 650 were not getting synced to iCal through iSync. Upon looking closer, I noticed that the reverse was true as well: Events I added to iCal were not getting synced to the treo.
The iSync logs said that everything was syncing successfully despite the problem. I double checked my settings on the treo and in iSync to make sure the calendars were scheduled to sync. All 6 of my calendars were checked to sync. Since this was all working a couple days prior, I assume the settings were correct.
After resetting my treo and restoring a back-up in an attempt to get my calendar to work properly, I noticed that the calendars listed in iSync disappeared even though they still existed and seemed to work in iCal. iSync keep trying to tell me to open iCal to add a new calendar because there were none.
After more fiddling I was only able to get iSync to properly list my current calendars by deleting a specific calendar. When I removed it entirely in iCal(I backed it up so I could test things out), iSync would update in a matter of seconds but if I put it back, no matter what I did, iSync would not update.
Finally, I started removing specific events in the calendar. It seems when I removed all the events that contained "alarms" (which I had started playing with a couple days prior). The calendars would work again. So I suspect iCal alarms as a culprit.
I can make due without the alarms for now, but would like to start using them again. I was starting to schedule applescripts to perform specific activities scheduled through iCal.
Has anybody else run into this problem and/or found a workaround that allows you to use iCal with your palm/treo and schedule applescript alarms? Any advice would be great. Or, if you are having the same problem I am, check to see if you have alarms in iCal.
    I'm running Mac OS X 10.4.2 on a dual G5
    iCal Version 2.0.2 (1038)
    iSync Version 2.1 (88.0)
Treo 650 (Verizon) (firmware update 1.03)
    Thanks,
    Michael

Verizon Wireless does not now offer—and has not historically offered—the Palm Treo 680. The Treo 680 is a GSM device, and not compatible with the Verizon network. Verizon currently offers the Palm 700p and the 700wx, and has previously offered various Palm and Windows Mobile devices beginning with the Palm Treo 600.
The anomalies you see are likely the result of issues with iSync and the iSync Palm conduit, and not with the device itself. With an advanced Palm device such as any Treo beyond the 600, you should instead opt to use either…
    • the Missing Sync for Palm OS, or
    • the Missing Sync for Windows Mobile
…selecting whichever one supports the operating system of your particular Treo. In your case with a Treo 680, that's the Missing Sync for Palm OS.

  • Ical Email alarm

Heres my problem. Whenever I add an event on Ical, I always us the email option as an alarm. However, I am never getting those emails.
Could anyone help me with this one?

In most cases if you're using the Mail app. on your computer it needs to be active for the email alarm to be sent. iCal does not have to be active but Mail does. Sometimes on mine when I open Mail an outbox will appear which will have the alarm message in it, then it gets sent a few seconds later. It's a bit hit or miss if you've quit Mail or if your computer has been in sleep, but I believe it always sends the alarm message if Mail is left running.

  • Ical disable alarms for group calendars

    hi there,
i have ical clients setup to access group calendars on a 10.6.2 server. is there a way to disable the alarms for wiki/group calendars?
    thanx

    Hi,
Open the calendar list in iCal and select the calendar so the background is blue. Press Cmd-I (or choose Get Info from the Edit menu). A sheet should open with the calendar info, there is an ignore alerts option there.
    Best wishes

  • ICal and Alarms

I have numerous recurring events set up in my iCal. Everything transferred over fine using BlackBerry for Mac Desktop Manager, but when you look at the event on the BlackBerry itself, no reminder/alarm shows. The alarm still works on my computer. Any idea why this isn't transferring over?
    Thanks.

I finally got everything on my BB correctly, but it took a lot of work that some might not want to go through.
    1. I uninstalled and removed any files associated with PocketMac.
    2. I uninstalled Desktop manager.
    3. I corrected all the information on my Mac.  This took a long time, and I had to remove some calendars that were read-only.  They weren't being used anymore, so it wasn't a big deal.  I have 3 calendars.
    4. I created archives of iCal, Address book and Notes.
    5. I reinstalled Desktop manager.
    6. I wiped the BB.  Yeah, I had to erase everything and start from brand new.
    7. I setup the BB itself.  The thing that seemed to be most important, especially for iCal, was to change the Time Zone in Options-Date/Time.
    8. I connected the BB and setup Desktop Manager.  I did a sync with all 4 PIM options, selecting replace all data on device.  I also selected all calendars for Calendar and Tasks
    9. I ejected the device and checked that my data was correct, both on the Mac and device.
    10. I turned on the cellular connection.
    11. I went to the BlackBerry/provider website and sent service books.
At this time everything is where it is supposed to be.  I even did another sync, after starting and quitting iTunes, to sync music.
I am scared to do to many more syncs at this point.  With everything working I don't feel like spending hours and hours to fix it again.
