IChat Rendered Useless

Okay so I'm trying to communicate with a friend using iChat.
We both have Macbooks (one black, one white!). Both have up to date versions of iChat running. I can communicate with people using iChat without a problem.
However, when I try to chat to my friend he can see my messages but if he responds, I get nothing and although he shows up in my buddy list with the video icon by his name, if I try to initiate a video chat he gets nothing and if he tries to initiate it, I see nothing.
He has AIM installed on his machine. We've video chatted using Mercury with no problems but ichat is just impossible.
Any suggestions? Anyone!?!

There's a network related issue on one (or maybe both) sides. You should each try a test video chat with Apple's test user. If it doesn't works for only one of you then you know that this is the side with the network issue.
To test with Apple's test user, just add appleu3test01 to your buddy list (add as an AIM user). There's also appleu3test02 and appleu3test03 as these users are often busy since they can only be used by one person at a time. Once they show up in our list, start a chat. It just streams Apple Commercials.
One you find out which side has the problem, you'll want to start investigating how that person is connecting to internet. Certain network routers or wireless basestations cause problems for iChat and need to be adjusted accordingly. You can find lots of info about that here:

Epson Printer rendered useless by update

Last April apple sent an update for epson printers. After stupidly performing the update, my Epson Stylus NX 330 printer was rendered useless. Now when i click on print , I get an error message telling me my printer doesn't recognize the cartridges.

DVD drives rendered useless

Hello,
Recently, my G5 Dual 2.0 decided that it would no longer burn DVDs. I have previously burned many DVDs on the internal superdrive (a Pioneer DVR-107D) as well as my external LaCie (a Pioneer DVR-K12D), and an older 1x LaCie.
Now, I get the same error message on all three: "This disc cannot be used because this disc drive is not supported. Error 0x80020025"
Toast can see the drives and I can burn CDs, but not DVDs, on any of them. I suspect the OS is the source of my problem. Does anyone know of a preferences file that I should trash, or any software updates I should have? When I run Software Update, I am all up to date.

Have you tried just doing a restart? This worked for me when I had a similar problem.

About 620 tabs now rendered useless; all appear as 'New Tab' when I start Firefox.

I had so many tabs open at one point (I was in the process of getting rid of them, one by one...if you've used Tumblr, you know what I mean) and Firefox crashed. When I clicked the 'Crash Report' thing and Firefox restarted, all my previous tabs now appeared as a New Tab. This happened about 2 or 3 weeks ago...I've done dozens of crash report restarts, as, one time, it actually did restore all my tabs and I got through a number of them before it crashed again and they all went back to New Tabs. How do I recover all those all tabs? Any help? I really, really need those tabs back.

Sorry, that was not helpful at all either. I went through the process of deleting Firefox and then re-installing but all the tabs still come up as blank New Tabs. Is there any way to install an older backup history of my browser or something? All the tabs are there, so there is some miscommunication between the browser and the actual information it's supposed to have stored.

TS1702 PAGES app crashes when iCloud is turned ON, and I try to open a new document. The app is rendered useless unless I turn iCloud OFF, but I can't access any of my iCloud documents.

This never used to happen, but I haven't been able to use the Pages app for months now, because it crashes whenever I have iCloud turned on. When I turn iCloud OFF, I can use the app as it is intended.
I really want to be able to use this app because I'm working on a book, but I don't trust saving valuable writing on this app.
Please help. I want to love this app, but it's not working for me.

Try a reset: Simultaneously hold down the Home and On buttons until the device shuts down. Ignore the off slider if it appears. Once shut down is complete, if it doesn't restart on it own, turn the device back on using the On button. In some cases it also helps to double click the Home button and close all apps from the tray before doing the reset.

Mail rendered useless after move to Europe

Hello all,
I have been using Mail since last summer both with my college email and gmail accounts. It worked great up until I went on my study abroad program. I am in Europe and have made no changes to my computer, but, Mail simply just will not sync with my accounts. Does anyone have any idea what might be wrong?

You need to talk to the provider of the wireless network. I assume, when you say "not working" that you are neither sending nor receiving. Normally I would expect receiving to work without problems, and sending to need some tweaking.
Do not (yet!) start changing your preferences.

USB bus rendered useless after peripheral gets unplugged

This started just recently. Whenever I unplug a USB peripheral the bus no longer reads anything you plug into that port, except for external harddrives. Additionally, when you do this to the port that is on the same bus as the keyboard and trackpad they both cease to function. However, it still powers the backlights on the keys.
I have to keep restarting the computer to restore the buses. Thankfully the power button still functions when the keyboard dies.

After plugging and unplugging in a series of peripherals I've found the problem to be my wired Xbox 360 controller. Other peripherals such as my external keyboard and mouse causes no problems if I plug and unplug them. And plugging in my Xbox 360 controller seems to cause no problems either. However, once I unplug the controller that's when the buses start to semi-fail (not read any other peripheral inputs but still power them, and also power and read external harddrives). And then any peripheral plugged into the other port (it doesn't need to be the 360 controller) will cause that port's bus to also semi-fail if unplugged.
This is probably not an issue that is covered on this forum anymore. But if anyone has any ideas as to why this is happening I'd be greatly appreciative. Mind you, I've used this same controller and drivers on my old Powerbook G4 and my Mac Pro and have had no problems.

Pacman rendered useless

I was trying to install yaourt-git, to do which I followed a guide

but I got stuck at the 5th line. I was told to run
pacman-key --init
and so I did, except now I cannot install anything with pacman, because I get this:

error: failed to commit transaction (invalid or corrupted package)
Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.

Pacman, by definition, does not overwrite user configuration. Colore renders useless parts of Clips

Hi,
I have a problem with color that might be a result of my own stupidity, but i cant think of a way to solve it.
So, i edited my project and then did "send to color from FCP".
Everythings fine, I did the grading and now do select all and render. The problem:
Color does not only render those parts of my clips, used in the final movie, but the entire footage.
To make the mysterium perfect, it does so only with SOME clips, not with every one.
Strange?

The answer: Probably a speed effect applied. That causes most of these problems. The Release Notes have the work-around.

IPad Rendered Useless after iOS 5.1.1

Hopefully someone here as an insight on this and a possible solution.
I have both an iPhone 3GS and iPad 1,
I upgraded them both through the 'settings' menu on the phone, which to me, is a great idea... When it works properly.
Anyhow, straight after update, I had similar problems as this guy here:

However, now the right side of my iPad screen has become totally unresponsive.
So I've tried hard resets, restores (Redownloaded iOS 5.1.1 through iTunes), nothing is working.
So now I can't even setup the iPad, since the 'Next' button doesn't recognize me touching it, and sadly you can't turn rotate the screen to use a part of the screen that is working on the setup menu.
So yeah, if anyone has an idea on how to manually sort this, or when Apple are rolling out a fix... I'd appreciate it.
I use to love browsing and watching 'Air Crash Investigation' in bed on it, or using a TV catch-up app on it.

Anyhow, just downgraded to iOS 4.3.5.
Might go back to 5.0.1 or 5.1, not sure if it's worth it.
Hopefully they fix the bug on 5.1.1, but overall, good result since my iPad has full functionality again!

This simple solution involves correcting the ENUM keys in the Registry (not as scary as you might think) and deleting all instances of your player from the Device Manager and then reinstalling so that Windows and other applications will all recognize your player again. It's so simple, and once I tried it, I was amazed that's all it took to fix the problem.
?I?suggest you read the whole page and follow the instructions as they are given. I deleted and re-installed my player several times and then rebooted a couple of times before it took effect, but then it did, and I was able to download the Firmware and have had continued success with my original player that I posted about as well as others I have acquired since I first posted that message in 2006. For reasons I have not yet identified, this problem still happens every now and again, sometimes when I switch between players to synchronize. It may well be that when I use my registry cleaner or some other utility that "fixes" my registry, that it resets this particular key - but as long as it's easy to fix, it's not a problem. W520 rendered useless by ancient drivers

I use cinema 4d and The foundy's NUKE on my w520 when I travel. My issues concern the ancient display drivers currently available from lenovo:

I recently started using Cinema 4d R15 and much to my chagrin, the 3d viewports consistently crashed about 5 minutes into using the software. No matter I tought, R16 is right around the corner. After installing R16 the problems persisted.
NUKE 8.0
The upgrade to NUKE 8.0 (from 6.3) causes the node icons and pipes to disappear after 2 or 3 minutes of use, only leaving the text visible in the script network.
A half functioning unstable machine
The only way to (sort of) fix these issues has been thus:
1.- Uninstall all display drivers using Driver Sweeper
2.- Restart machine in discreet graphics mode (disabling optimus power saving features)
3.- Install the latest Quadro drivers from NVIDIA.
The problem with this setup is the motherboard sometimes changes back to optimus mode when shut down and screws up the startup of the machine; not to mention the now dismal battery life and needless heat generation and fan noise.
Ultimately this is a solution that is not realy a solution at all; and it's bitterly disappointing to see that in the end I was a fool for not buying a macbook pro as everyone said I should.
The W520 hardware is great, and I know releasing certified OEM drivers is a process that takes time. But almost a year?
After dealing with this issue for the last four or five months I'm ready to give up and buy a new machine even though I have a perfectly functional one right now. I simply need my computer to run the software I use to make a living.
Questions
Are updated drivers even in the pipeline?
Is there a way to get good optimus functionality while using NVIDIA reference drivers?
Any help would be appreciated

I´ve been using nVidia's drivers on my W520 for the last couple of years, Windows 7 / 8 / 8.1 and now currently on the Windows 10 Tech Preview. I've had zero issues with Optimus functionality using them apart from having to reset them completely once I upgraded to Windows 8, but they wouldn't stay on Auto-Select in Global Settings - Base Profile. A simple clean install of the nVidia drivers did the trick.
I have Optimus selected in BIOS and run it on Auto for everything, but I use a couple of helpers, available in the settings for the nVidia drivers to better keep track of GPU usage on the machine, but I tick "Add "Run with graphics processor" to context menu" and "Display GPU activity icon in Notification Area". That way I can right click a program shortcut and force it to run on the GPU of my choosing, and the GPU activity icon will show you which programs are currently running on your nVidia GPU.
nVidia Quadro settings
Everything I run on it does so flawlessly, be it CAD, gaming, HW accelerated media playback, you name it.
I am now using the QNF (Quadro New Features) drivers, and so far they're very stable and perform amicably.

Video feature on iChat AV = "not responding" error and the -8 error

I have been looking all over the forums all day long and it seems like anyone has yet to provide an obvious solution. Here's the problem:
I used iChat's video chat feature just fine (logging in through port 443) with my external USB camera, Ecamm's iMage. It worked fantastically. Now, all of a sudden, I go to do a video chat this morning and poof it says either that 'I'm not responding' (despite the fact that I was the one who sent the invitation) or there was a connection error (-8) when the other person sends it. I didn't change anything in between yesterday and today, on my router, computer, anything, but it doesn't want to work anymore. The other people are using iChat AV as well, as they're MacBook owners. Here's the low down.
Firewall settings: Has always been turned off, but just to make sure, I added those six or seven ports listed on the Apple website (three of which are for Jabber, but I don't use that) [5190, 5220, 5222, 5223, 5298 for the TCP, and 5060, 5190, 5297, 5298, 5353, 5678, 16384-16403 for the UDP] under a separate option entitled "ichat" and checked the 'allow' box.
Router: Netgear WGR614 v6 (54mbs)
Internet provider: Cox Communications (up to 7mbs download, up to 1.5 mbs upload)
Quicktime settings: I already saw previous threads and it's on the 1.5mbs thing like they suggested.
I did a test chat with the 'iphone video' test receiver, username "appleu3test01" on ichat and strangely, it worked...
ichat preferences: Already deleted all the old preferences in the folder and started anew but it still didn't want to work. The video settings are not set to limit the bandwidth either.
Please help!!!!!

I also know it's nothing to do with the actual internet connection, because I contacted Cox Communications about something I saw mentioned on another thread [Sounds like the ISP is now offering a VoIP service (Blocks SIP ports) and wants to make some money for the "extra" service.] and they confirmed they hadn't changed any settings or configurations, and don't have any sort of VoIP blockers of any sort or limitations on the *high speed internet connection*.
Any ideas?! I just (four days ago) bought this webcam and now all of a sudden it's rendered useless because of a random iChat problem? The techie at the Mac store said he'd had this problem and it just sort of randomly worked itself out a couple of months later... eyebrow Is there nothing I could try?
P.S. I'm not a technie, so when people start talking about changing stuff in the router I need explicit, dumbed-down, step-by-step instructions please!

Desaturated, too bright footage after rendering

Hey everyone!
I'm having some trouble with rendering out my footage(s).
They become desaturated (color loss) and bright for some reason.
I tried different render methods, codecs, formats...almost same result on each of them.
Here is a picture, it can explain better:
The original footage is much darker, and may lack of some detail, but it more colorful.
Also, the color loss/brightening is only visible on the rendered movie (doesn't matter which codec or video player I use) - usually I use h264.
I do short animations as well, in AE. If I trie to render it out in AE, I get the same result.
First time, I noticed this problem, I rendered out a 40 min footage, and something was off. I couldn't fix this issue, and for some reason, I checked some old footage. They ahd the same problem, but I did not notice it before (see below - picture).
I'm using Adobe CS6, Windows 7 64bit.

It's not the monitor.
Be it WMP, be it Quicktime, be it whatever, it's not the monitor.
The same washed out finished product looked exactly the same on the dvd on both a PS3 with 1080p tv, to an old projector attached to an old DVD player at school as it did on my computer with said monitor.
Sure, slight changes, but still the same kind of ugly.
It's not the monitor.
It's some kind of difference in Premier to the encoder, or the players or something, or some kind of weird bug. For the last time though, trust me, it's not the monitor. In fact, the monitor's gamma was up to high, and I figured that early on and I managed to match the original footage to itself through the camera.
Even if it was the monitor, how do I get it to look decent? There is no way because play with the color and brightness gets and ugly output no matter what, because you can't even guess what it'll look like. Premier and After Effects are pretty much rendered useless to me at this point, and I keep getting told it's the monitor. It's not. I've done 100 things to check that.
