Ichat window in time machine switches to finder window

Try to open iChat window, version 4.0.8. in Time Machine. The TM window changes to a finder window. Is this normal for an application like TM? Trying to get back an open chat. not recorded. Thanks.

Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
Time Machine is a backup file storage and retrieval system, hence the reason you end up in Finder (file system) when you select a prior date.
I think you'd have a better chance of retrieving a recent chat link directly from iChat, File, Recent Items as shown below.
I'm on iChat 5.0.3 (OS X Snow Leopard 10.6), so your screen might look different, but as I recall the same option exists in the Leopard version. (Full chat names are intentionally obscured for confidentiality, so only E's appear in this screen capture.)

  • Why does time machine open a finder window

I just tried to enter time machine and instead of the display I'm used to, it opened 2 finder windows.  It's happend every time I've tried it today on two different logins on the same machine.  It's just a plain mac book pro, no external display.

I apparently fixed the problem using the tried and true Windows method.  I restarted the machine.  Looks like normal now.  I see the fancy star pattern and the time scroll thingy on the right.

  • The window that opens when I click on the Time Machine icon is Finder (devices) and when I close this Time Machine also closes.

You will need to be much more specific about what you problem is. That is how TM works. That is how you find things to restore from TM, by using a Finder window so that you can browse through the Mac's hierarchy of folders and files.
Why are you double posting this?

  • Time Machine can't find external drive after installing Lion

Time Machine can't find external drive after installing Lion. I have a Laice 1 terabyte external drive that worked fine with Snow Leopard and now no show ... tried connecting it to front port and Mac Pro can't see it. Also lost Office,Quicken, and Final Cut Pro  says: " You can't open application because Power PC apps are no longer supported" this is Not a good surprise!

Does the drive work when just directly connected? If so, have you prepped the drive?
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.

  • Time machine can't find wireless device despite strong Wifi connection

Every time I try to set up time machine, whenever it tries to find a wireless device it says "Airport Utility was unable to find any Airport wireless devices. Make sure the Airport wireless device you want to set up is plugged in and in range of your computer, and then rescan again." I already have a perfectly strong connection to my router so why does it keep saying that it can't find a wireless connection?

I have the very same problem. MB recognizes my 2TB Verbatim when connected directly via USB and Time Machine goes to work. Make sure the Airport wireless device you want to set up is plugged in and in range of your computer, and then rescan again.").
@Pondini - this is not a time capsule, I have a HDD on my WiFi network.
Hi, and welcome to the forums.
You have two problems with this setup.
First, Apple doesn't support backing-up that way. See this Apple article: [Disks that can be used with Time Machine|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/15139.html].
Second, backups done locally (when the HD is connected to your Mac via USB) are placed in a Backups.backupdb folder at the top level of the drive. When they're done over a network (Ethernet or WIFI), that folder is inside a +sparse bundle,+ and you can't easily switch between the two.

  • Since I upgraded to Mavericks, Time Machine no longer finds the Time Capsule Disk on my network

    Hi,
Since I upgraded to Mavericks, Time Machine no longer finds the Time Capsule Disk on my network.
Five minutes before upgrading it however performed successfully a last backup.
I found several posts on this forum and proposed solutions:
    - restarted both the mac and capsule
    - deleted the /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist (twice rebooting in between)
    Still have the issue.

  • Manually deleting Time Machine Backups Via Finder?

    Hi everyone,
I'll just pose the question right away:
Is it safe (and feasible) to navigate through my external HD in which I've set up for Time Machine via the Finder and manually select and delete back ups (ie. drag them to the trash can)? Thanks!
If you really want to know why I ask, please read below:
I recently had my logic board replaced. Then I noticed my system was not backing itself up via Time Machine. After a few Google searches I found out that when you replace your logic board, your MAC address changes I also found out that Time Machine pairs its backups via MAC addresses.
I found a procedure to help pair your new MAC address to your previous Time Machine backups from the old logic board and MAC address, this required finding your old MAC address, something I could not do. However also read that after completing the procedure, Time Machine will do a FULL backup, backing up all it had basically. It would not have fit on my external HD anyways.
So my plan was instead to start Time Machine fresh with this new logic board and MAC address. However, it needed to do a full backup as well, and I don't have space for that. I don't want to wipe my external hard drive and start from there, because I'm afraid that something will crash in the whole process of starting a new set of backups. What can I do is, delete a set of backups from the old logic board. I am aware of how to do this via the Time Machine interface. But because of my new logic board/MAC address, I cannot view those backups in that Time Machine interface. After having a steady set of new backups, then I'll delete ALL of the old backups.
Thanks ahead of time for any help.

Ah, you haven't found the fairly well-hidden +*Browse Other Time Machine Backups+* option.
See #17 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.

Your pro doesn't matter.. I presume it is happily working.
Your imac setup has got messed up because you changed from a local (my book being USB type I presume) to network drive. Did you do a clean install of Lion?
Did you use the backup from the Pro on the imac? Otherwise I don't see how the Pro shows up in use previous disk. Where is Pondini when you need him??
You cannot download Time Machine as an App and replace the current version. It is built into the OS.. the only way to do it is a clean install. Unfortunately that might be the only way around the issue.
There is a number of issues that Pondini has covered in the setup issues of troubleshooting.
This is the most relevant I think. http://pondini.org/TM/B6.html
But look at the whole section B setup problems.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
If it was me, I would store all the info you need.. not using TM but using a straight copy of files.
Then clean install Lion. I doubt any of these issues would exist if you had not installed Lion over existing setup or used a different backup.
See if you can get Pondini to respond.. !!

  • Time machine files read on windows

Hi guys, i been using time machine for more than 3 months i have no complain, it works pretty smooth but i have a worry, since i have a mac book pro with snow leopard wich is beeing backed up every hour with time machine software, and a windows xp computer at home, it is possible to recover my backed up files from my time machine disk on my windows xp machine, i mean i just want to have them on a readable format, i tried to enter to my time machine backup from my windows computer and just watch some files on an not understandable format, any ideas?

Windows cannot be used to recover files in a TM backup. As is Windows cannot read a Mac formatted drive without third-party software. You cannot format a TM backup drive using any other format than Mac OS Extended, Journaled.
To read a Mac formatted drive in Windows you would need a utility such as MediaFour's Mac Drive. Even then you could not restore from a TM backup because there is no Time Machine for Windows.

  • Restoring Safari Windows Using Time Machine?

I had a number of windows open in Safari for a research project.  While traveling, I accidentally let my machine run its battery down and had to restart.  I restarted in a hotel with an annoying internet login splash page so when Safari opened, all of my browser windows re-directed to the hotel splash page.  On some tabs, I could navigate back to the page I'd had open but others were lost.
I'd like to restore the session I had open before my trip using Time Machine.  I closed Safari, went to Library/Safari/LastSession.plist in Time Machine and restored the file from an earlier version.  But when I opened Safari back up, my pre-trip session did not open.  Instead, the session from right before I closed and restored opened.  I tried restoring the entire Library/Safari folder, but still the same thing!
Though a relatively minor problem I had some important research articles open that will be a pain for me to find again.
Also, I can't understand what's going wrong.  From everything else I've read, restoring the LastSession file should do the trick.
Any thoughts on where I might be going wrong / how to fix this would be greatly appreciated!

I have restored the same file (~/Library/Safari/LastSession.plist) from a Time Machine Backup. Then I restarted Safari and selected "Reopen All Windows from Last Session" from the History menu. That worked for me. I'm running Safari v6.0.5.
Does anyone know what the SessionState key is for that this file lists for each tab?
LastSession.plist lists for each previously open tab:
    <dict>
              <key>AncestorTabIdentifers</key>
              <array/>
              <key>SessionState</key>
              <data>
              String of data          </data>

  • Only seeing one window in time machine

When I enter time machine I only get the first window "now". Shouldn't I see something in the windows behind that?
I've only had it running a few hours but I thought I would get to see the hourly back there or something?

When I enter time machine I only get the first window "now". Shouldn't I see something in the windows behind that?
After TM has made successful backups you will see a trail of finders behind the current finder, and a timeline of backups on the right of the screen.
I've only had it running a few hours but I thought I would get to see the hourly back there or something?
If you've only just turned it on there won't be much to see, but the gui does allow you to navigate through each successful TM backup.

  • Time Machine "Delete Backup" Status window

    Hey all,
I am trying to delete an old backup inside Time Machine - did the old-fasioned way by "conjuring" the time machine with the stacked Finder windows on a starfield.
I arrowed up to the oldest backup and on the Action (with the gear symbol) dropdown I selected "Delete Backup".  I get a confirmation prompt to "delete the selected backup" and I hit "Yes".  Then....  where is the "Delete Backup" status window?
I know "delete backup" would take a while just like the backup process - however , at least we see the backup status on the Time Machine Preferences window.  It seems like the Time Machine Preference window only shows the backup status.  Could someone share how we could bring up the "Delete Backup" status window?
    Thanks!

Unfortunately (or fortunately) the delete backup had completed by the time I saw this message
I went back to the Time Machine starfield windows and I no longer see the oldest backup (I noted down the date of the oldest backup).
Next time when I do another "delete backup"  I'll look for that "spinning gear at the bottom right" as you indicated.   I assume that is a "hovering" spinning gear that is separate from the desktop dock?   If you have a screenshot (its ok if you don't)  that would be great - thanks again for the reply.  This will help anyone who might be looking for the same answer as I am.

  • Time Machine Lost After Installing Windows

Last night I installed Windows XP using Boot Camp. Everything went great and Windows ran perfectly....well it is Windows so it ran okay. Now I noticed that I have an icon for the Mac HD like always and a new icon for the Windows partion (Untitled). Now the Time Machine drive icon is missing. When I open Time Machine it will not let me select the back up drive that I use.
Also, how do I rename the new Windows drive. It shows up as "Untitled".
    Thanks,
    Joe

    I found this also.
One other thing I have noticed with Virusbarrier X5 which might be useful - if you enable archive scanning, the entire Finder interface will lock for about 30 seconds when you try and mount and image to instal an application.
I've mailed their support people already about the Time Machine issue and tonight mailed them about the 'archive scanning' issue.

  • Time Machine freezes in restore window

    Hi,
sorry for the new topic, I searched around the forum and found no answer to my problem.
    Here it is:
when I start time machine the usual time navigation window appears. The interface is very slow (say you need 2-3 minutes for selecting a restore date from the timeline on the right).
When I click on a restore date nothing happens. The program is frozen. the computer is frozen. Usually I need CTRL-ALT-ESC to recover from that.
Note: external HD is full and continuously TM deletes old backups to find space for new ones

Updated to 10.5.3 and the problem is solved
    Thanks all
