Icon Creation?

I have a jpg image 87 X 90   that's 14.7 KB  that I would like to convert to an .ico file of 32 X 32 pixels.  Can I accomplish this with PSE8?  If so, would you please walk me through the process, please?

Read through this link. I think this will cover about everything including a link to the site where you can download the .ico file format plug in which is free or you can leave a donation. It's available in both Windows and Mac flavors.
http://www.photoshopsupport.com/tutorials/jennifer/favicon.html
There should be a readme in that zip. It should install in your file formats folder which resides in your Plug Ins folder. I'm not sure in Elements whether that's going to be in your main application folder or if that's going to be in the hidden folder.
Edit: Added Reading material...
Here's a couple of  MS links that cover icon creation:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa511280.aspx
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms997636.aspx
Vector shapes are going to probably work better than raster (pixels). This is because vector shapes can be transformed larger or smaller without deteriorating...as in blurry and pixelated. Elements is vector ability is limited to using the shape tools and custom shapes as you can't create your own vector designs in Elements. You can add and subtract from shapes but that's not really an good solution. If you want those sleek icons like what you see on the MS site, you might consider looking into finding a vector program or maybe a program dedicated to icon creation.

  • Icon Creation Question -- What format are custom shaped icons saved as?

I have Adobe Photoshop CS and Adobe Illustrator CS. I am assuming that one of those are able to create custom shaped icon format images for using on Mac folders.
I am able to save usable icons for folders as .psd format.
However, they are always square or rectangular, with a blank background around a non-square/non-rectangular image.
I'm not able (don't know how) to save icons as custom shapes that only appear as the custom shape when in use on a folder.
    Examples
The .psd file in Photoshop is only the blue disc shape, but when it's saved, the white background is added by default.

I know how to use the Save for Web feature in Photoshop using the .png-24 selection which produces a transparent background, but that format doesn't work for icons.
What format(s) do I need to save images as to use as custom shaped icons on Mac folders?
A detailed reply would be very appreciated.

The easiest way to get what you want is try Iconographer:
    http://www.mscape.com/products/iconographer.html
It is quick, easy and a mere $15. You can do it "by hand" but it can get a bit complicated or iffy.
    1. Create the icon you want in Photoshop, format is 128x128 pixels at 72dpi.
    2. Make sure you have a transparent background layer, flatten the file
    3. Save as a tif file: myicon.tif
    4. Launch Terminal and type the command:
    tiff2icns /path/to/myicon.tif
You can get Terminal to fill in the path for you, just put a space after the command, then drag the file into the Terminal window and drop it.
Hit the Return key. With luck you will have a new file "myicon.icns" with the transparency preserved.
    5. Actually using your icon requires the icns file to actually display the icon so you can copy it from the GetInfo window. The only sensible way to do this is to download the freeware program icns2icon:
    http://www.icons.cx/goodies/
    6. Launch icns2icon and drop your new icon file on it. Now when you do GetInfo on the file there will be an icon to copy.
Iconographer is easier and better. If you want to make a bunch of custom icons with transparent backgrounds it is well worth the 15 bucks.

  • Image Icon Creation

    Hello All,
Does anybody know how to properly create an image for a toolbar? I have successfully created a .gif image, but the gray border is around the image and does not blend into the toolbar/button color. How do I resolve this?
    Thank You.

You have to set the palette transparency of your gif. The best way is to choose a little used color (such as magenta) and fill the icon background with it. Then use your paint package to set magenta as the transparent color. If you want semi-transparency or blending, try using png format instead.

I'd like it in black, deep red and deep blue.

Oooh yeah. Chris, download Axialis Icon Workshop. It runs a few days without limitations and creating icons with it is a one-click operation by ways of a PS plugin. And, no offense and with all respect to your disease, making it 3D-ish and glossy is simple in PS, so maybe still take the time and learn what you can do with a gradient tint layer and some gradient overlay and bevel layer styles (several of which are available as presets, making it another one-click thing). If you still can't get it done, on of us kind souls might pick it up. contrary to what you may believe, we don#t need to be reminded of the bads of the world...

  • Disable Quicktime Icon Creation

I installed Quicktime and it has the most annoying feature. Everytime it starts up it re-creates the Quicktime icon on my desktop, my quickstart toolbar, and in the Start Menu.
I've moved the Quicktime folder to another location in my Start Menu to avoid clutter, and please STOP RECREATING IT!
There has got to be a way to stop this.

Solved my own problem. Apparently I installed an older (v7.1) version of quicktime. Updating to 7.2 stopped this truly annoying behavior. ahhhhhh!

  • VF02 flag icon creation?

    Hi Friends,
Can someone provide me the USER EXIT and perhaps the EVENT(s) to add a button to the VF02 screen and respond in the
USER-COMMAND module to this Buttons FCode.
I mean, i want to add the flagicon(Release/accounting) in my own created screen but with different functionality.
Like if i am having 10 fields in my own created screen when i save those records i will be saving. And when i click release(flagicon) it has to pass the data to another module data.

    Hi
    Just as I said before:
    - Or you change the std program SAPMV60A
    - Or you create a new trx (ZVF02) in order to run a Z-program (copy of SAPMV60A) where u insert all modifications u need
I believe these are the only two solutions.

  • Substituting a Custom Icon in Place of the Folder Icon

    Hello again...
I just learned about putting a folder on the dock to display a group of aliases for my applications, so I could be able to start the applications with a single-click. Is there any way to not have the "Folder" as the icon for this, but something custom that I create using some sort of icon creation program?

What you need to do is create the folder, give it a custom icon, drag it to the dock and then right click it and choose Display as Folder from the menu.

  • How to save an image as a PICT resource file?

Can someone tell me how to save an image as a PICT resource file? I'd like to make ikons in Photoshop and save them in this format, but I 'm not finding any leads. Thanks!

If you have Resorcerer from "ancient times" it of course can handle resource forks since that's was it's goal in life.
There are lots of icon creation apps these days.  Do a search for "icon" on macupdate.com to see what's available.  For example that search finds:

  • Dr. Damien's Development - Object Based File I/O VI - Implementation I

This time, a few tweaks to design and start implementation of the base classes.
    Top Level Design
Location — Add Open, OpenAs, and Close methods to open and close locations in the file. Open is only usable on self–describing files. OpenAs specifies the data type on non–self–describing files and overrides the data type (if possible) on self–describing files.
Data — Moved data into children so that they could contain an array of instances of their parents.
DataArray and DataScalar — Added containedData and accessors.
Processing — Added internal data to determine whether the processing is on read, write, or both.
In thinking about the location format, I came to the conclusion that the hierarchical path format given last week cannot be used for a raw binary file. The only information of import is the location in the file. This can be specified in bytes or numbers of a certain data type, but a “path” is not appropriate. I could coerce it into some sort of path format, but this would be equivalent to creating a formatted binary file, such as TDMS or HDF5, and that is not the intent of this exercise. The path format is appropriate for the other file types.
Attached is the start of an implementation of the base classes. All base classes are all created and inheritance is in place. Base icons have been created. The icons file attached includes these so you can use them in your icon creation, as well (feel free to do a nicer job ). Note that the icons include an area at the bottom to enable customization for the file type. Only one or two of the methods have been created.
Next time, I will try to finish off the implementation of the base classes. If time permits, I will start on a vertical slice through the binary file type. After that, the next file type is up for discussion. INI, TDMS, ZIP, HDF5, ??? What would you like to see implemented?

  • Export Flexibility of Custom Shapes & Layer Styles?

Over the past few years I've developed a workflow for icon creation that involves purely custom shapes and layer styles. This has been fantastic from a number of points of view
    - Vector based workflow for easy scaling, resizing
    - Easy maintenance of style coherence with layer style presets
    - Custom shape library means rapid prototyping of common elements
While this approach in Photoshop helps me rapidly develop icons, it's now presenting some challenges from an export point of view. Specifically the path to vector based formats like svg and xaml is hindered by the fact that Photoshop and Fireworks/Illustrator don't share a common layer styles approach. (Fireworks having a XAML export plugin and Illustrator having both XAML plugin and SVG export capability)
While the above programs are more geared towards vector work, they don't offer the flexibility of Photoshop when it comes to creating photorealistic icons with texturing.
Is anyone aware of a method for exporting a vector element from photoshop while maintaing the editability of layer styles? (Exporting simple shapes in PDF works but falls down once masks and layer styles come into the equation)
Fireworks CS4 seems to import select PSD's decently but there is not a 1:1 relationship between the layer effects from Photoshop. Illustrator seems to assume that anything coming out of Photoshop will be bitmap based and acts accordingly.
Any feedback or similar experiences would be appreciated.

    Hi guys,
From last week am I trying to do what I mentioned in post above, I just find it very difficult to do. Now I beginning to doubt whether it is possible or not, provided the SDK we have for CS4.
What do you think, is it a doable item and I am missing some simple thing ??
Please let me know of your views its really very important.
    Thanks,

  • Ports for Firewall rules

    Hi,
can anybody point out which ports are to be opened on firewalls ?
Im am using a SunMC 4.0 server/console/agent on a v240 and need to monitor systems located behind firewalls.
    Also NATing is involved.
I would like to know which ports I have to open from agents to server (and vice versa) and from server to java-console on a PC (and vice versa)

    Hi,
You need to open firewall ports from 161-168. Also take a look at /var/opt/SUNWsymon/cfg/domain-config.x and make sure to open any ports within the "snmpPort" line of that file.
Take a look at this post on how to configure firewall ports for console to server communication: [http://forums.halcyoninc.com/showthread.php?t=7]
If you still have problems with adding the agents, you can take a look at the following post on troubleshooting agent icon creation: [http://forums.halcyoninc.com/showthread.php?t=92]
If you are using agents in NAT mode, it may not work very well as alarms would not show in the alarms tab. Please take a look at the following posts regarding this issue:

  • LVOOP ImageMagick Interface v1.0.1 Released

Justin Goeres Engineering is pleased to announce the release of the LVOOP ImageMagick Interface library, an LVOOP-based toolkit to facilitate the use of the powerful ImageMagick utility suite from inside LabVIEW. It is available in the LAVA Code Repository, via the link above.
The LVOOP ImageMagick Interface library supports all of the ImageMagick utilities and almost every command-line operator (over 200 of them) with support for custom user-specfied operators for the edge cases. Several examples are included that demonstrate basic text & image creation, composition, and conversion in and out of LabVIEW (including VI icon creation).
It also gives LabVIEW as a language a spot on the list of official external ImageMagick APIs.
The LVOOP ImageMagick Interface is available above under the GPL. Other licensing terms may be available. Contact Justin Goeres Engineering for details.

    Hi Pat,
I can help. (And I confess I'm surprised to get a reply notification on this thread – blast from the past!)
My old LVOOP ImageMagick library may or may not work anymore. I think that later versions of IM (or maybe LabVIEW itself) changed some stuff around and broke it. And it's not a VI Package so it's a hassle to deal with. Honestly, at this point I'd recommend doing what you need from scratch. It's pretty easy. Read on.
First, let's get you a portable, static-linked version of ImageMagick that doesn't have all those DLLs cluttering things up. Here's a direct download link that I think will work. It's from this page, and you can find it yourself if you do a Find there for "portable."
Once you've got that, unzip it. You should see a bunch of different EXE files. Those are the ImageMagick utilities. The one you want is convert.
You should be able to resize a gif by cd'ing to the directory where the convert.exe is, and doing convert <input_file> -resize 400x500 <output_file>, using whatever size you want. You can run that command line via LabVIEW's System Exec.vi and you'll be good to go.
You'll probably want to package the convert utility with your application or locate it somehow near your source code. Good news – it's trivial. The convert.exe works standalone, with no DLLs or anything. Totally portable. I just did something similar a couple months ago on a customer project and it worked great.
Post back here if you have any trouble and I'll try to help.

  • Create a folder that inside is in list view and smallest font?

    I hope this is simple,
Using Applescript I want to be able to make a folder That when I open it, is in the list mode and using the smalles font (8). Could be useful if I can even specify where on the screen i want it to open and the size of that window. list and font are however more important.
