Icon launches OS X application

A friend has an older flat screen iMac. He only uses it for Word which is 2001 I think. All his desktop icons (where he store all his files!) have lost their "application type". They come with the error message that one must use os X to use this file. The files work fine when opened from the Word program but my friend is elderly and refuses to learn how to do this.
How do I fix this. Do I boot into X and change them with Get Info? Or ?

Hi, Lewis -
I did that. (have an alias of Word - os 9 on the desktop for opening the file icons) It does try to launch Word but the same error dialogue comes up saying that X must be running or some such.
The Word application may be of the Application Program Package type; many, but not all, of those have .app appended to the name of the program. Even though such a program looks and behaves like a program, it is actually a specialized folder containing both OSX and OS 9 versions of the program. An alias to a Package program will (in theory) activate the appropriate version of the program - sometimes it does not, for the same reason(s) that double-clicking files no longer starts up the correct version of a prgram.
The solution for the alias issue - open the Package, locate the OS 9 version of the program (it's often in a sub-folder named Classic), then make a fresh alias to it and place that alias outside the Package folder in a spot of your choosing.
To open the package, with the program not running control-click on the package (the program itself, not the alias) - one of the items that will appear in the contextual menu that opens is Show Package Contents. Select it, and the package will turn into a folder, which opens automatically.
Make the alias, place it, then close the folder - its icon should have a small image of a brown parcel (a "package") superimposed on it. Control-click on that folder and select "Hide Package Contents" from the contextual menu.
One of the characteristic behaviors of OS 9's Finder is that it will seek the newest version of a program in order to open a double-clicked file. If that newest version happens to be an OSX version, it will often try to use that. Of course, if OSX is not running then that program can't run - and you get the error message stating that.
Sometimes rebuilding the desktop will fix that - sometimes it won't, as you've experienced.
Often leaving the program (Word, in this case) open in the background will work - Finder will usually use a valid program that's running to open a double-clicked file before attempting to start up another.

  • Captivate does not launch after clicking application icon

    I just downloaded and successfully installed Captivate. And elected to use the Trial mode. But when I click on the application icon, whether in the applications folder or the alias I placed in the dock, nothing happens.
    Help please.
    Thanks, Chris.

    @Arunkumar: Yes, I ran the AM tester and I am able to see the results properly for all the VOs and levels.
    I created a sample on the HR Schema and tested. I see that when I click on the Employee node for expansion(can be checked with the data or the short description), it hangs with the load icon.
    I do not see anything in the log other than:
    <RegionRenderer> <encodeAll> The region component with id: r1 has detected a page fragment with multiple root components. Fragments with more than one root component may not display correctly in a region and may have a negative impact on performance. It is recommended that you restructure the page fragment to have a single root component.
    I do not see any upload options here to give my testcase. So, I uploaded to this link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/vybip3owzuziz86/HRHierarchyViewer.zip
    Please let me know if I can do this elsewhere for easy access.

  • Unable to launch Java Swing application with JSE 5.0

    Hi,
    we have a swing appln that gets downloaded via java webstart - which was working fine with 1.4.x until 5.0 came. I know that JSE 5.0 includes java webstart too - but when I start my application, I get Marshal error & filenotfound Exception. What we are doing in the application is to download some XML files that are to be used by the program. But the program is unable to find the files.
    If I manually install 1.4.x & Web Start separately, everything works fine.....
    Is there any change needed in the JNLP file?
    TIA

    Hi there,
    Here's the issue:
    I have modified our web page that helps the user download the swing appln - as per the guidelines given in the web site:
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/guide/javaws/developersguide/launch.html
    Let's say that I already have JRE 1.4x & JWS installed on my m/c. When I visit our web page that downloads / starts the client application, I get an error:
    Java Web Start : Invalid Argument Error.
    General
    An error occurred while launching/running the application.

    If I uninstall JRE 1.4+ & etal - JRE 5.0 gets downloaded and everything works smooth. But I need to take care of backward compatibility... Hence this post....
    BTW, the JNLP file looks like:

    Try downloading the jar file itself and opening it with winzip or checking its contents with jar tf <jarfile name>
    if it is indeed corrupt (as the exception stacktrace seems to indicate) try mailing the person who wrote the demo so that he can check whether the jarfile is there or not, and whether it is corrupt or not.
    Other than that, nac.

  • Unable to launch web start application

    Hi Please can any one help me.
    I have a problem in launching the web start application.
    As i am the beginner i need help from you people.
    I have created three class files as below.
    Aeon_PManager.java
    SimpleSerial.java
    SimpleSerialNative.java.
    We have to create a SimpleSerialNative.dll in the same folder where we are saving all the class files.
    The jnlp file that i have written is as follows:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <!-- JNLP File for Aeon HHBM Manager Application -->

    </resources>
    <application-desc main-class="Aeon_PManager.Main" />

    </jnlp>
    I am using Tomact6.0 server.
    I am saving the jnlp file and jar files in the path below
    tomcat6.0/webapps/root
    Is it wrong to do so. If it is then what should i do to launch the application.
    Is it necessary for me to create jar files for all classes seperately.
    should i create jar file for simpleSerialNative.dll also.

    1) I totally agree with Andrew
    2) You have 3 classes and 5 jars, how's that?
    3) Either you don't respect naming conventions and have uppercase packages or you don't know the difference between a jar and a package. Are you really a Java programmer?
    4) You jnlp names out lib/Aeon_PManger.jar while your stack trace claims not to find http://zycomm:8080/Aeon_PManager.jar (the lib path is missing and Manager is not missing any 'a'). How badly did you mess pasting?
    5) You're asking if you should package simpleSerialNative.dll without giving out any detail, do you suppose we have a universal knowledge of all existing APIs? Anyway you already got an answer to this in your other post.
    6) You're a lucky man, 'cause I really love dukes, so I'll tell you what you should do (and I expect to give out 10 dukes on both posts): have a single jar within everything in it and execute it as stand alone app. Command: *java -jar YourJar.jar* (if you declare main class in manifest), or *java -cp YourJar.jar YourClassFullName*. Once you get it working you'll be ready for JWS deploy issues. If you can't get even there, take this advice: give up java (and maybe the all programming staff)!
    Bye.

  • How to set the icon for the entire application with JFrame.setIconImage

    I set the icon on the main frame using JFrame.setIconImage(). The icon is shown properly in the main frame.
    If more JFrames are opened from the main frame, the newly opened JFrames also show the icon.
    However if JDialogs are opended, in some cases the icon set on the main frame is shown and in other cases the coffee cup.
    What is JFrame.setIconImage() expected to do? Setting the icon for a single JFrame or the entire application?
    How can I set the icon for the entire application?
    How can I set the icon for JDialogs?
    Thank you

    In order for your dialogs to use the same icon as the frame, you must parent the dialogs to the frame which has the custom icon.

  • How to launch my java application in a web browser?

    Hi. I try to launch my java application, e.g. "HellowWorld.java", using web browser.
    1. How can I change my java application program to java applet in general way?
    I read "Java: An Introduction to Computer Science and Programming, Third Edition"
    by Walter Savitch and found page 803 - "Converting a Swing application to an applet".
    My question is how I can know which class should be removed or not such as using JApplet instead of JFrame. Are there general rules about this?
    2. I found "AWT only" tutorial had some example lauching application using "AppletButton".
    How can I use this method to launch "HelloWorld.class"?
    http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/information/download.html#OLDui
    (after extracting zip file) -> ../OLDui/layout/card.html
    3. (continued 2) Can I use above method to embed applet into web browser?
    For example, java Swing application -> applet using "AppletButton" -> web browser using "<applet></applet>" tag.
    I'd appreciate any partial anwers of these questions or other suggestions.
    Thanks.

  • When I try to launch an adobe application I am prompted to renew my creative cloud subscription even though I'm paid up until the end of the year.

    When I try to launch an adobe application I am prompted to renew my creative cloud subscription... even though I'm pre-paid up until the end of the year. I can't use any of my applications at the moment.

    Another update: The one month free trial software is no longer working for me as a work-around.
    Also: I tried to open up my Adobe applications from two other machines that I have in the house, but it did not work. I received the same subscription renewal popup loop. This leads me to the conclusion that it is strictly an issue on the Adobe Licensing Server side, and NOT a localized issue with something wrong on my system.

  • An error occurred while launching/running the application

    We've been using Web Start to deliver one of our products for over 2 months. We're getting about 10 downloads of our application a day which is very good considering we're in a very niche market (mapping applications). However, some customers (about 20%) are having a number of problems with Web Start either during installation or during download. For this reason we had to create a stand alone installer for customers that couldn't get Web Start working or more commonly could get Web Start working but couldn't download our application. The most common problem we see is the 'Unable to load resource' problem. I've attached the different errors and different exceptions sent from a customers site. Can you spread any light on this. Is it to do with Web Start not being able to identify the proxy?
    Many thanks in advance

    Apologies for the lack of response only I bust my knee a week ago and I've been in agony since. Anyway enough moaning.
    Yes users are behind a firewall. From what I can get from Sun the problem stems from JWS's inability to detect script based proxies. This is very frustrating because we have about 25% of our customers that just can't use JWS because of this. Ok so they could type it in manually, however, how many system support people are going to give out those sorts of details to end users, besides most end user don't even know what a proxy is!
    To get around this we've provided a standalone installer (which defies the point of JWS in the first place). Don't get me wrong I think JWS is an amazing piece of software, however, I can't see how JWS can be used successful across the internet until this is solved, intranet, extranet fine.
    In our experience you can't leave 25% of your customer base behind!

  • How to launch My Own Application by clicking a embedded link in iPhone

    Hi All
    Does anyone know how to launch my own application by clicking a embedded link in iPhone? same thing like you click a phone number , and then the phone application will be launched.
    Thanks
    -Tommy

    You have to place the URL types your application handles in the Info.plist - see LaunchMe's for the format.
    You'll do best opening it in a "plain text format" (right-click, open as), as it's a nested array instead of just a set of values, and it's easiest seen/modified in its native XML.

  • How to Start/Launch another WD application using a link.

    Hi, I've been trying to see if there's an official way that I can launch another WD application using a link from within an application where the applications are not in the same deployable object.
    P.S.  I've seen the other thread of how to do it when the applications are within the same deployable object.
    Thanks in advance as always,

    Hi Michael,
    of course it does, so the question should be:
    "Hey, how do it get the application URL of a WD application without hardcoding the server name, port or whatever?"
    This is simple:
       * Return is the application URL for the specified <code>deployableObjectPart</code> with appended
       * URL parameters given by <code>urlParameters</code>. All key/value pairs in the map must
       * be of type java.lang.String.
       * @param deployableObjectPart a deployable object part representing a Web Dynpro application
       * @param urlParameters key/value pairs added as URL parameters; they must be of type String
       * @return the application URL for the specified <code>deployableObjectPart</code> with appended
       * URL parameters given by <code>urlParameters</code>
       * @throws WDURLException if the URL couldn't be generated
       * @see com.sap.tc.webdynpro.services.sal.url.api.WDURLGenerator#getApplicationURL(WDDeployableObjectPart)
      public static String getApplicationURL(WDDeployableObjectPart deployableObjectPart, Map urlParameters) throws WDURLException {
        return AbstractManager
          .getServerPlatformImplementation()
          .getURLGeneratorFactory()
          .getURLGenerator()
          .getApplicationURL(deployableObjectPart, urlParameters);
    or if you would like to get it load balanced:
       * Return is the workload balanced application URL for the specified <code>deployableObjectPart</code> with appended
       * URL parameters given by <code>urlParameters</code>. All key/value pairs in the map must
       * be of type java.lang.String.
       * @param deployableObjectPart a deployable object part representing a Web Dynpro application
       * @param urlParameters key/value pairs added as URL parameters; they must be of type String
       * @return the workload balanced application URL for the specified
       * <code>deployableObjectPart</code> with appended URL parameters given by <code>urlParameters</code>
       * @throws WDURLException if the URL couldn't be generated
       * @see com.sap.tc.webdynpro.services.sal.url.api.WDURLGenerator#getWorkloadBalancedApplicationURL(WDDeployableObjectPart)
      public static String getWorkloadBalancedApplicationURL(WDDeployableObjectPart deployableObjectPart, Map urlParameters) throws WDURLException {
        return AbstractManager
          .getServerPlatformImplementation()
          .getURLGeneratorFactory()
          .getURLGenerator()
          .getWorkloadBalancedApplicationURL(deployableObjectPart, urlParameters);
    Before i forget it to mention, these are two methods of the WDURLGenerator API. There are others where you don't have to specify the deployableObjectPart, you can use DPO name and name of application as parameters instead.
    Hope that helps.
    Best regards
    Stefan
    PS: This was my 2nd attempt, i hope i got you right now...

  • [Pantheon shell]No icon in wingpanel's application menu

    Hello, guys.
    I followed patheon's wiki page and installed almost every package listed in it.
    After switching to pantheon, there is no icon in wingpanel's application menu.
    However, when input something into the search inputbox, like terminal, the icon for pantheon-terminal shows normally.
    I'm not quite sure what's the problem, maybe it's because I was using MATE before and changed the icon theme?
    Thanks.

    There are third party programs that can display an application list which allow you to edit what apps are shown. I use Witch, an app that also provides some window controls. I've avoided tricks like editing the plist because doing this can effects far beyond hiding them from the application switcher.

  • Launch All Web Applications in browser using PowerShell

    Hi Admins,
    I am working on a Script where I should be able to launch all the web applications in the browser to open in tabs.
    I have worked out with the following script and was able to come upto an extent where I am able to launch the Internet Explorer.But ....only 1 web app opens up and throws an error message :
    Exception calling "Navigate" with "1" argument(s): "The interface is unknown. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x800706B5)"
    Below is my script
    Add-PSSnapin Microsoft.sharepoint.powershell -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
    $webApps = Get-SpWebapplication
    foreach($webapp in $WebApps){
    $URL = $webapp.URL
    $ie = New-Object -ComObject InternetExplorer.Application
    $ie.Navigate($URL)
    while ($ie.busy -eq $true) {
    Start-Sleep -Milliseconds 600
    $ie.Visible = $true
    Can anyone help me know where I am making the mistake ?
    Regards

    Hi,
    As I understand, you want to lunch all web applications in browser using PowerShell.
    I can achieve it by the PowerShell code below:
    foreach($webapp in $WebApps){
    $ie = New-Object -ComObject InternetExplorer.Application
    $URL = $webapp.URL
    $ie.Navigate($URL)
    $ie.Visible = $true
    You can try it and check it if can work.
    For the error message, I recommend to run the SharePoint Management Shell as administrator or turn off User Access Control and then check how it works.
    Best regards

    The above code will open 3 different browser. OP requested to launch all web application in different tabs. To achieve this we need to use the code below
    $webApps = Get-SpWebapplication
    $ie = New-Object -ComObject InternetExplorer.Application
    $ie.Navigate($webApps[0].URL)
    for($i=1; $i -le $WebApps.length-1; $i++)
    $ie.Navigate2($WebApps[$i].URL,0x10000)
    $ie.Visible = $true
