IDCS3 linking images setting SNAFU?

I've got a problem with cloned linked images. Here's the scenario: I open a document and option-click drag on an image to create a copy of that image (I want to use that object's settings in a new image). I go to the Links panel and I relink the new object to my new graphic, except BOTH instances change. This happens in ALL my ID docs, but not my co-workers. I'm trying to set up a grid of different images that all have the same text wraps, etc. and it's getting frustrating to have to create each box from scratch. (I know I can set up a style, but that's not the point.)
Is there a setting somewhere that I'm not finding that I can turn this off?
Thanks-

You have Relink all instances of "xxxxxxx.xxxx" selected in the relink
dialog box.

  • Linked Images - Setting the order?

    I have a catalyst project that was 6mb before I linked the images to the assets folder. The problem I'm having now is that the main .swf loads fast, however, the images all load in a random order. I was under the impression they would only download when called on. How can I change this? The temporary test page for this project is here: http://www.yellowdotfoundation.org/cube.html

    Thx, and sorry for asking something in the manual,np. I say that to everyone :-)

  • Can't change a linked image???

    I have a lot left to learn in Dreamweaver but linking images I've done alot, I hope someone can help me on what I'm doing wrong.  The linked image won't let me change links.  Here is the home page http://kmmcement.com/.  The bottom right picture under click to view slideshow is linked to slideshow.html.  I changed the slideshow and named the new one ss.html.  When I right click the picture and choose Change Link and select my new ss.html, it does not change it in the code.  I tried manually to change it in the code and publish, but the new page won't load up (although when I preview the page, it loads fine.)
    The only thing I've done differently on this site is that I finally learned to get the bottom navigation links to work without looking jumpy and jittery when clicking or rolling over them, by going to Modify - Page Properties and choosing links and set them up there (basic that I should've learned awhile ago).  I didn't do the navigation bar until last, so would that have anything to do with not being able to change the link?  If so, then how can I change it to where only the bottom navigation has it's own style as I'm sure there's going to be alot more links I'm going to be adding.
    Thank you in advance for any help. (By the way, I'm using Dreamweaver CS3)

    Starting on line 215 of your code, you have this:
    <tr>
    <td height="338"><div align="center">
    <p class="style11">CLICK TO VIEW SLIDESHOW!</p>
    <p><a href="slideshow.html"><img
    src="images/slideshowpic.JPG" width="347" height="223"
    border="0"/></a></p>
    </div>
    </td>
    </tr>
    Try changing it to this:
    <tr>
    <td height="338" style="text-align:center">
    <p class="style11"><a href="ss.html">CLICK TO VIEW SLIDESHOW!</a></p>
    <p><a href="ss.html"><img src="images/slideshowpic.JPG" width="347" height="223" border="0"/></a></p>
    </td>
    </tr>
    Save.  Upload page to server along with ss.html page.  Hit refresh in your browser.

  • Exporting linked images with overlays

    Hi,
    I'm using InDesign CS5.5 on OS X Lion.
    I have linked images in my InDesign document that I want to export as JPG and maintain the original file naming scheme. That part is easy (export as HTML, look in the images folder; export as ePUB, look in the images folder of the archive; etc.). But what I'm struggling with is when there are overlays added in InDesign. Some examples of overlays: part labels (e.g., "a", "b", "c"), text labels, arrows, lines, etc. The only way I've found to export the overlays is to do this:
    -Group the placed image and overlay items together
    -Apply Object Export Options to the grouped item such that Custom Rasterization is checked
    -Export via one of the options (e.g., HTML, ePUB)
    I get one image per group, which is what I want. The problem is that the filename for that image is now a random number. What I really need is the filename for the original image to be used.
    I've also tried exporting to other formats, e.g., PDF (and using the extract all image options) but that doesn't preserve the overlays in the extracted images (which makes sense since the PDF sees the letters as text).
    I figure to do this I have to write a script. So before I embark on that quest, I was hoping to get opinions on whether a) such a script is possible and b) whether there is a better way. For specific workflow considerations, moving the adding of these overlays to the images outside of InDesign (e.g., via Photoshop) is not an option.
    I envision a script that does the following:
    -Set custom rasterization on every grouped object
    -Export all grouped objects and other linked images as JPG (with certain settings)
    -The exported images for the links would preserve the original filename (adding "_fmt" like InDD does now would be okay) and for the grouped items it would use the filename of the linked image that is part of the group (and fallback to a random number if there is no such image). In the case that the filename could not be specified, then embed the original filename of the linked image in the group
    Obviously, if a script could also do the grouping of objects (e.g., finding a linked image, checking to see if there is anything on top of it, grouping it all together), then that would be even better, but I'm not holding my breath. :-)
    Thanks,
    Steve

    This is where the Adobe DNG could shine.
    http://www.adobe.com/products/dng/index.html
    Worth the read ... this can save the changes that one
    makes.
    DNG does NOT help in this case.
    There is a huge misunderstanding that this is part of what DNG can or should do.
    But if you think about it, what good are the adjustments being stored in DNG if you have to use a particular program to open it anyway?
    Think about Aperture's Edge Sharpen for a second. Lets say you store that value in a DNG. Fine, what other program is going to able to reproduce that result EXACTLY to how you were previewing it at 100% on your monitor?
    Lighroom is trying to do something along these lines by passing editing commands off to Bridge through DNG. But here you run into another problem - it constrains what editing any one program can do. If Lightroom is limited to only ever having editing commands that are the same as what Bridge offers, and no other program on earth supports them, then what have you really accomplished? Will unknown editing commands simply be dropped without warning?
    That's why I think simply exporting projects, which hold master images alongside sidecar files (very like XMP) that describe edits are about as good as you are going to get. If you want to truly preserve editing work and you care about quality, nothing beats a TIFF file where 100% of the pixels are exactly as you reviewed them during editing. I personally trust Aperture enough to back up master images along with edits, and am fine with that.

  • Linked images not showing

    Hi,
    We're running Illustrator CS4 across a suite of 12 Macs on OS X 10.6.8.  Over the last couple of weeks, several accounts have been hit with the same problem, that linking an image in an Illustrator document will not show the images, but just a bounding box.  The link information is correct, but I've found no way of getting the image to show, aside from embedding it.  Furthermore, saving a document in this state will cause Illustrator to crash when trying to reopen the document.
    We use network accounts for the Macs, so all installs are local on each machine, but users access their profile directly from our server.  Therefore, all links reference a location on our network and not the local drive.  However, there does not seem to be anything wrong with the installs as the issue is with accounts and not the individual client.  Once the issue occurs for a user, it occurs on any Mac they log into, while unaffected users can use any Mac without issue.
    Our network has run in this state for a year now and the problem has only surfaced recently.  I've tried clearing user's preference files relating to Illustrator, but this has had no effect.  It's also random when creating a new user on the network, as some will have the issue and others not, despite all being created with the same set of default preferences.
    If anyone has come across anything similar, or has any idea of what to look at with this, I'd be very grateful for some help.
    Thanks,
    Simon

    Hi Steve,
    Thanks for the response.  First of all, you'll have to excuse me if I get a few points wrong, as I'm not too familiar with Illustrator.  However, in answer to your questions;
    The layers panel is showing "<Linked File>" next to an empty white box.
    Turning off preview does show the boxes you describe.
    I've no idea how to go about checking if an image is beyond the mask bounds.  However, I've used the same image for testing across accounts and it displays fine on those that aren't having this issue.
    Also, in the top left corner of Illustrator, the name os the linked image does display and the options available when clicking that do seem correct and working.  Relinking from there does nothing, but I can open the image for editing etc.  None of this helps in getting the image to display though.
    As for the server side, we have always used a Mac server at the same version as the clients.
    Thanks,
    Simon

  • Dropdown list to change image field linked image?

    Hello,
    I am quite new in Designer but I have to complete a job and I don't find the solution.
    I try to update on a form an image field using the value of a dropdown box and a "if" script.
    I use linked images (not embedded ones) and try using a script calling the image Field. value. image. href  property.
    The property is well updated as export to xml displays well the new href value but the image is not displayed as something was missing to activate it.
    form1.#subform[0].ImageField1::calculate - (FormCalc, client)
    if (UN_DropDownList == "3373") then ImageField1.value.image.href = ".\Images\UN3373.png"
    endif
    Rather simple (don't laugh at it) but it doesn't work.
    I found solutions for embedded images via visible/hidden by dropdown list (not yet tested) as these ones. I give them below for reference (if some other users are interested)
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/683215
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/2187604
    http://acrobat.timhuff.net/?p=5
    But not for linked images (path or URL). By the way, I found same problem descriptions in other forums but without any proposed solution.
    As I should have quite a lot of images with frequent updates, it seems to me a better solutions...
    Thanks in advance for you help.
    Kind regards
    Philippe

    Hi Philippe,
    Have a look at this blog, http://blogs.adobe.com/formfeed/2009/11/linked_vs_embedded_template_im.html, it turns out that both linked and embedded images are stored in the PDF but just in different ways. So updating the href at run time will have no effect.
    If you are not in a possition to store all the images in the PDF at design time then you might have to look at setting up a webservice to access them on a server.
    Good luck

  • Why does Illustrator CS 4 high res pdf ask for linked images?

    I have saved high res pdfs (press quality) from Illustrator CS4 directly, and when I sent these pdfs to the printers, they ask me to supply them the linked images, otherwise they could not view the entire file completely. I thought the high res pdf setting would automatically embed images, could anyone please help me?? Our printers are waiting for explaination urgently and the images are very very large to be transferred overseas online. Thank you!!

    If you made a PDF which is "print ready" there should be no issue, this is given that the printer informed you as to what "Print Ready" was by their workflow standards. The only time I would need to go back to a client for source files which were embedded into a PDF is if there were color mode issues (RGB image needed to convert to CMYK with certain profile) or if client PDF produced without required bleed. If you have exercised due diligence and the PDF is in fact "Print Ready" the printer may not be used to working with PDF files that are truly print ready. I have sent PDF files to printers who absolutely wanted to open the PDF in Illustrator and have all source/linked files because they were used to getting all end user files, not press ready PDF files. Once I spoke with the Prepress operator and let him know that I went through the PDF and made sure the file was exactly separated as it should print, and he should be able to send it straight to his RIP, then everything was fine.
    Prepress people get used to dealing with designers who don't know how to do anything execpt make a moch up of what they want and print it out on their own ink jet printer. The actual file they send to the printer may need to be completely retooled in order to separate correctly for the printing process.

  • Linked image border

    This is small but irritating issue. Ever since upgrading to
    CS3,
    whenever I add a link to an image Dreamweaver puts the blue
    border
    around it. I have to manually set the border to 0 in the
    properties to
    get rid of it. Like I say it's no big thing but just another
    step I have
    to do. I cannot find anything in preferences that would have
    a no border
    rule for linked images. In MX2004 there this was never an
    issue, if you
    wanted the border you had to manually set it.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.
    Fred

    >>Ever since upgrading to CS3,
    > whenever I add a link to an image Dreamweaver puts the
    blue border around
    > it.
    Dreamweaver is actually not doing anything. What you're
    seeing is normal
    behaviour for linked images in some browsers such as IE when
    no border
    property is specified in CSS or HTML.
    >> In MX2004 there this was never an issue,
    That's because MX2004 used to automatically insert border="0"
    as an HTML
    attribute in the <img> tag as soon as you added a link
    to the image (check
    for "0" being inserted in the border field in the Property
    Inspector next
    time you use MX 2004).
    DW is moving users ever more towards CSS-only formatting and
    is dropping
    HTML formatting of all kinds, which includes border="0" on
    linked images.
    To solve the issue with CS3, just add the line "a img
    (border: 0; }" to an
    external stylesheet which is linked to all pages in your
    site. This will
    tell all browsers to apply a zero border to any image inside
    an <a> tag i.e.
    all linked images

  • FM9/Win - Changing linked image file?

    I can do what I want to do in InDesign, QuarkXpress, and PageMaker, but for some reason this functionality appears to be absent in FrameMaker, which is utterly dain bramaged.
    I have a placed image in multiple places in a FrameMaker document. The image is placed by reference, not embedded. I now want to link to a different graphic (annual updates).
    Re-placing the image a zillion times is not an option, as the sizing and position is already set. I just want to change what FrameMaker is linking to.
    For the life of me, I cannot find where or even if, I can do this.
    The inelegant solution would be to simply move or rename the currently-linked-to file on the hard drive, and rename the new graphic to the same name as the old one. I do not like that option at all, as there are some instances in other documents that I still wish to link to the old image file.
    Is FrameMaker's link handling really this clumsy and archaic? In the other applications I refer to above, I would either go to a links palette and change the destination or right-click on an image and relink it. In FrameMaker, the "Object Properties" dialog appears to only report the location of the referenced file, not allow you to change it.
    What gives?

    Dan,
    To my knowledge, there is nothing in FrameMaker like there is in InDesign that allows you to relink an image directly, or even indirectly via a link list. I also have looked and not found anything. There is a link menu item somewhere but I have never figured out what it does.
    There is a plugin by Bruce Foster that is used to archive a book or document and its linked image files and text insets. When you run it, the plugin COPIES the book file and ALL the files associated with it into another folder that you specify, and then readjusts all the links among these files to point to the copied files. It puts all graphics files into one subfolder and all text insets into another. So, once you get your book where you want it, with no future changes, run the archive, and then use the files and book in the archive folder to print or do whatever you need to do in the future.
    The downside is that you have two sets of files to manage, but if the archived set is rarely or never edited or updated, then all is well.

  • Changing the linked image for the Image Matte Key doesn't work

    When I change the linked image for the Image Matte Key in Photoshop, the link does not change in my Premiere Pro CS6. Sometimes it takes 2-3 times going into the Image Matte Key setting and locating the new matte in Explorer (each time having to re-locate the folder that the matte is in) to see it within the premier monitor. Any suggestions?

    Hi
    The commands work correctly here on the same OS etc: Cycle Locators jump to the next/prev marker and the Playhead jumps to the Start of the Marker.
    Default KC are Control Command +Arrow Left/right
    Step 1: check you are using the correct key command :-)

  • Why do linked images resize in ID after being edited elsewhere?

    We use CS4 to layout full colour test papers and text and images files are linked from InCopy, Illustrator and PhotoShop. We noticed that if the images or the text is edited outside of ID, when ID is launched the images always shrink to say between 97- 70%. Even if the linked InCopy file is opened and closed without and editing, the images shrink or get clipped on the sides.
    We’ve played with the setting in ID where we decide whether we want linked images to fit in pre-determined image placeholders but this doesn’t seem to fix the problem. Is there a way of ensuring that images retain their original size and dimensions?
    Would be glad to hear of some useful insights on why this is happening. I hope my question makes sense.

    Have a look to your Object Styles of the used frames. Is there something defined in the frame fittings options?

  • Image setting under export

    Under file:export I no longer have the option to change the image setting, (eg the resolution) Has it been moved to another part of lightroom or is there a way to bring it back under Export?

    It is there, still, just not for DNG or Original Export Choices.

  • Print as Image - Set in Registry?

    We have been resigned for some years to use the "Print as Image" setting in Adobe Reader to assure successful printing. I normally have to instruct all our users how to set this.  Is there a setting in the Windows XP registry that controls the "Print as Image" setting?  I have searched without any success.  It would sure make it a lot easier if I could use a registry edit for my users.

    I have found the solution at this link:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/393479
    We are an automated machine engineering company and we have about 40 mechanical and electrical engineers.  They open and print many PDF manuals and documents from everywhere. I have found that "Print to Image" corrects all of the problems 100% of the time. No need to troubleshoot or figure out what is wrong with a document, it just works.
    Thank you very much for your reply.

  • How to apply a color to a greyscale linked image?

    I have an old file that I've been working on that another designer started. She had these black and white linked images in there with colors applied to them. Currently, you can click on them with the direct selection tool and see the color that is applied in the "fill" box on the toolbar. But when I tried to place that same image into the document myself, there is no option to apply a color. What did she do to make it possible to apply these colors? I'm using Indesign CS6, by the way.
    Anyone know?
    Thanks!
    ~ Sarah

    Hey Daniel & Mikey,
    Thanks for your responses, but I'm still stuck with my same problem. I should have explained better - what I really need to do most here is relink the exact same file that the old designer was already using. I've moved files around and now the linked needs to be relinked. When I relink the exact same file that was working fine with the color applied before, I run into the same problem again. I cannot direct-select it and change the color of it. It's just not an option. This also happens if I create a new InDesign file and place that file in and try to do it fresh. She did something to that file to make it take a color, but I can't figure out what it might be!
    Maybe some visuals will help me to explain...
    This is the problem layer below. Let's call it "background". It's at 100% opacity, layer effect set on multiply in BOTH examples.
    Here's how I want it to look. There are a few layers in here to create this effect. When I click on "background" with the selection tool, I do not see a color applied. However, if I click on it with the direct selection tool, you can see that a yellow color has been applied.
    Now, when I relink the file (or place it myself), this is the result I get. You can see that "background" has reverted back to its greyscale state. When I try to select it once more with the direct selection tool, all the colors are greyed out and I can't apply a color.
    Anyone know the answer to this puzzle?
    Thanks!
