IDEA: add a USB Standard-B connector to use any laptop as an external hard disk

Here is an idea for you:
Add to your laptops a USB Standard-B connector with the following functionality:
When the power of the laptop is OFF,
you can connect the laptop to another laptop using this connector,
and use the internal harddisk of the laptop as an external harddisk for the other laptop.

From a normal external drive, no, it's not possible. The only device that would approximate this sort of functionality that I've heard of would be the Seagate GoFlex Satellite:

I have bought an external hard disk 2.5" and even though I have formatted it as FAT 32 still none of my 2 USB ports detect it. It is a hitachi drive 160 GB eSATA. I haven't use power with my external drive.
I ended up sharing it through a toshiba notebook I have for the kids running Windows XP and I transfer files though the Toshiba to the external drive. It's outrageous!!!

OSX can recognize and use FAT32 partitions without additional help !
Your problem sounds to me as a power consumption problem of the external HD, meaning that the HD does need more power from the USB port than the MacBook Pro can deliver.
Best solution might indeed be to get the external HD on its own power supply.

You probably have a Mac mini, as an iMac is a different system.
Using firewire connections, you can daisy chain drives together. So, you hook one into the mini, then hook the next into a firewire port on the external hard drive connected to the mini. If your current hard drive is connected via firewire, you should be able to add another firewire drive by plugging into your existing external hard drive.
If you're using a USB drive, you can buy a USB hub that will allow you to connect more than one USB device. -
how do I figure out if I have usb 3.0? I am trying to buy compatible external hard drive (western digital my passport for mac) and I can not figure out if it will work with my mac book.
Dont buy a Western Digital, get a Hitachi or Seagate (Toshiba is made by Hitachi). These are the most reliable, and the HD used inside Macs.
ALL HD can be made compatible with your MAC (including a WD if you already bought same), ......they just need to be formatted for the Mac platform, format them in Disk Utility as Mac OSX extended journaled. -
I use Time Machine with an external hard disc which has worked perfectly for some years. Recently Time Machine has aborted backups if the screen saver starts when back-up is in progress. I use a Maxtor OneTouch4 back-up system. Any ideas?

Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?

The first thing that comes to mind is that there are no USB 3 host controller drivers installed on your operating System. Are the other hard drives that work in the Port USB 3 or USB 2. If they are USB 2 then I would go onto the Support page for your machine and look for USB 3 drivers and try them

How do I add multiple passwords to a FileVault2 external hard disk?

On a boot volume, multiple users can have access to decrypt the disk - but with external disks it appears as though only a single password can grant access.
How can I enable a second passphrase to unlock a hard disk? Thanks.Currently there's no way to add decryption keys to a non-boot volume.

Problem with USB External Hard Disk Drive
I have similar problem with hard disk MK6025GAS in Sweex casing connected via USB as Raistlfiren in this post but I am not sure if it has something to do with kernel. The problem is that when I plug the hard disk via USB it is not even shown with in /dev/ or by fdisk -l. I had similar problems with the drive before but it was always shown in /dev.
I got same output from dmesg as Raistlfiren in the post before

From the beginning I though and I still think that the partition table is screwed up but the programs like TestDisk and fixdisktable work only with disks shown in /dev/

The only thing I understand from these logs is that the disk is blocked, therefore not listed in /dev.
Assuming the newer kernel problems I could try to use some older live linux CD to see if that would work. I am also thinking of connecting this hard drive directly to my laptop, using live linux CD and maybe check the output of hdparm. Is there anything else I could check or try?

I believe the problem is not system dependent. I have dual boot with windows and there the disk has also problems. However, I do have Arch32 with Kernel 2.6.30, using Gnome. hal and dbus are also running.
I did not tried to connect the disk to the computer directly, I will try it today.
Yesterday I have used SystemRescueCD 0.4.1 with Kernel 2.6.22. I wanted to see if it will be recognized by the system and placed in /dev/. Yes it was. This means that the problem highlighted in Gentoo forum can be true, but it doesn't solve my problem. I have tried to connect the drive several times to Arch and it was not shown in /dev/sd*, in SystemRescueCD it was placed as /dev/sdb. Now I am sure that the partition table is screwed up.
So I have started to play with the drive in SystemRescueCD with TestDisk and FixDiskTable but without success.

This string "FfEeSsNnBbUu" was repeating there for longer time and it was most probably related to debugging or a verbose mode of fixdisktable
As I have mentioned I will try to connect the disk directly to the computer and see what will happen.
Shall I try to correct the disk geometry to the one specified by manufacturer? Is it possible?

I purchased the standard CS5 suite (photoshop, illustrator, in design, bridge) student package for my laptop (through a download process, not dvd, in which I had two downloads). I used my first one, that followed with my hard drive crashing. I used my second download, and then I had an accident with my laptop and had to purchase a new one. I backed up all of my programs onto an external hard drive and I just tried to re download adobe programs using that. When i enter my serial number it says it is invalid. What can I do? Live chat will not help me because I do not have the current CS6 or CC.

Serial numbers will sometimes become invalidated if they were hacked and made available on the internet. -

My USB external hard disk won't work anymore after I updated to 10.4.10
As I said in title since it's quite urgent to me. ALL of my files is in my external hard drive. It's format as FAT or FAT32 I can't remember since I use it between mac and PC. More than that IT IS WORKING FINE UNDER PC. Before updating to Mac 10.4.10 I used my hard disk fine till I updated to this version. I plug in my usb port and after a hours it still won't be detected. I can find my hard disk in finder or desktop. I have tried plug my hard disk to other MacBook or Mac Pro but still won't work anymore. However it's working fine under PC or when I started my MacBKPRO as WindowsXP under bootcamp, my hard disk is working fine, too.
I have search this forum and seems someone have got the same problem as I face. I don't know what to do...and I feel so disappointed to Mac.As Mac OS X has no known viruses in the wild, that leaves you with one of three possibilities.
1. When connected to the Windows machine, a virus has written over a critical boot block area which allows the drive to become crossplatform. Get the latest Windows virus detection software and make sure the drive is clean of Windows viruses.
2. The firmware that allows it to communicate driverless has become corrupted on the drive case. Replacing the drive case itself will eliminate that problem, as suggested earlier.
3. The directory damage is just enough that the boot block itself is damaged. Backup any critical data from the drive onto the Windows machine first, and run Alsoft Disk Warrior 4.0 to repair the directory and see if that works.
The fact that Mac OS X 10.3.9 won't read it basically eliminates this as a 10.4.10 problem. Only a boot block or firmware issue like this could make a drive not readable on one platform, but readable on another.

Ejecting USB 2 External hard disks?
I've just got some Freecom Toughdrive 250GB USB 2 drives.
I want to check something about ejecting them and I can't seem to find info about this, even from Freecom.
When you eject a USB 2 hard disk, should the disk then power down? My Freecom Toughdrives all remain "live" after ejecting (the ready light stays on and the disk is still spinning, you can feel the casing vibrate.) You get a little noise when the cable is pulled, as the disk suddenly spins down.
Ive tried 3 of these with my Mac Pro and my girlfriend's MacBook and all of them behave the same - is this normal or am I damaging them by unplugging them like that?Note: since posting this, Freecom customer services got back to me, and apparently on a Mac, the bus-powered Toughdrives don't power down when ejected, but it's safe to unplug them anyway.
On PCs, they do power down if you use the "safely remove hardware" option. -
External hard disk that contain usb 3 output
I am trying to connect a hard disk that contain an output port of usb 3 to do a job, i have a cable converter from usb 3 to usb 2, the hard disk is toshiba. I thought it will be just plug and play. My imac don't recognize it, what can i do?
Exchange it for something else as those Toshiba EHDs are not compatible with Macs.
