Ideal Preview rendering szize?

I'm confused about the ideal preview rendering size. My monitor res is 1152x864. I rendered the previews at 1640 or whatever it is, and my 130 GB files collection produces an 18 GB library. This seems huge.
Do I need the previews rendered at that size, given my monitor res? I thought the LR produces 1:1 previews when needes.
Guidance please!
Thanks!
Reid

So what about this idea?
Why not make all those previews easily accessible from outside LR? They could be named the same as the images they refer to and be stored in a corresponding folder structure. Why that? To be able to use them in other applications without having to open LR and export jpegs first! I'll happily set aside enough disk space even for 1:1 jpeg renderings as previews. (Sounds exactly like what Aperture already does ;-)

  • Map Builder Preview rendering errors

    I am having problems using Map Builder. I have wasted quite a bit of time trying to fix these problems assuming I was doing something wrong, or something was wrong with my data.
    Error 1: I create a map using 2 themes. One theme is a geometry theme of topo edge primitives. The other is a topology theme of features built from those primitives. The geometry theme is assigned a red line style. The topology(feature) theme is assigned a blue line style. the geometry theme is listed first, to draw first. I expect to see the red overdrawn by the blue. The preview show red lines. When viewed in Acquis Data Editor, this map displays as expected (blue lines) and when a feature is removed (disassociated from the topo primitive) the underlying primitive shows up as red. When I stop and restart Map Builder, the preview rendering is as expected, blue on top.
    Error 2: I create a map using 1 theme. This theme is a geometry theme of topo edge primitives. I assign node and edge styles. When I preview the map, the nodes (only one node per edge) are displayed at the center of the straight edges, at what appears to be mid-distance between the end points of the edges of the shaped edges (not on the edge), and in the center of rings created by edges that have the same start and end node. They look like they are attempting to be what ESRI calls label points. Again, when I view this map in Acquis Data Editor, the nodes show up on the ends of the edges where I usually tend to look for nodes to show up. Stopping and restarting Map Builder does not fix this rendering problem.
    Are these known bugs and when can I expect to use the preview button reliably?
    Alden

    For the red line style, L.EDGE, the xml def is:
    <?xml version="1.0" standalone="yes"?>
    <svg height="1in" width="1in">
    <desc/>
    <g class="line" style="fill:#FF33FF;stroke-width:1.0">
    <line class="base"/>
    </g>
    </svg>
    For the blue line style, L.FEATURESTYLE, the xml def is:
    <?xml version="1.0" standalone="yes"?>
    <svg height="1in" width="1in">
    <desc/>
    <g class="line" style="fill:#3366FF;stroke-width:1.0">
    <line class="base"/>
    </g>
    </svg>
    For the geometry (edge primitive) theme, TOPO_EDGE, the xml def is:
    <?xml version="1.0" standalone="yes"?>
    <styling_rules>
    <rule>
    <features style="C.FACE"> </features>
    </rule>
    <rule>
    <features style="M.NODE"> </features>
    </rule>
    <rule>
    <features style="L.EDGE"> </features>
    </rule>
    </styling_rules>
    For the topology(feature) theme, GLOBAL, the xml def is:
    <?xml version="1.0" standalone="yes"?>
    <styling_rules theme_type="topology" topology_name="MGF_TOPO">
    <rule>
    <features style="L.Featurestyle"> </features>
    </rule>
    </styling_rules>
    For the base map, TEST2, the xml def is:
    <?xml version="1.0" standalone="yes"?>
    <map_definition>
    <theme name="TOPO_EDGE"/>
    <theme name="GLOBAL"/>
    </map_definition>
    As I said earlier, this does display blue lines after a restart of MapBuilder but upon first creating this map and themes, the initial display is red lines.
    As to error 2: I understand now that Acquis probably does a specialty mapping of metatdata and uses the NODE$ table, applying the style definition for the edge theme (M.NODE) to display them.

  • Weird colours with QuickTime sources, broken preview renders & crash at exit (CS4)

    Hi erveryone,
    I have a strange problem in Premiere Pro CS4: Allmost all QuickTime MOV that I put in the timeline show weird, broken colours. At first I thought this was a problem with a specific codec, but I have now tried several codecs and pretty much every one shows up equally broken. The only codec that seems to work fine is the one that my Canon EOS 550D produces (1080p, H.264 I believe), but that one does not play smoothly (not that I would expect it to do on my machine). Strangely, H.264 in lower resolutions fails again. Other containers seem to be unaffected. Here is a screenshot of the effect:
    Also, my preview renders (when rendering the effecs on the timeline) are similarly broken. They behave a bit erratically. Sometimes they are just black, showing nothing and sometimes they show a still frame of one of the previously viewed videos. Colours are messed up in a similar way, so I suspect a connection. Here is the same clip from the screenshow above, preview-rendered:
    Also, upon exiting Premiere, it usually crashes. This is less of a problem, but still very weird behaviour.
    Any ideas how I could solve this?
    Infos about my system which might be of relevance:
    Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 (education version)
    Windows Vista 32bit (SP2, all current updates installed)
    4GB RAM
    Intel Core2 Duo
    ATI X1300 Pro  256MB (with newest available driver)
    QuickTime 7.6.6
    The system has been freshly installed (from factory image - hence the older OS) so no malware or anything similar should mess anything up. Only software installed except the Creative Suite is Google Chrome.
    On my laptop (Win7 64bit, Intel i5, no separate graphics card, same QT version) none of these problems appear.
    Greetings,
       Florian

    I think I found the solution. Some further digging revealed that I did not have as previously assumed the latest driver for my graphics card installed. I was mislead because the manufacturer (Dell) did provide some updates, but not all of them (none in the past two years to be exact). I grabbed the newest driver kit from the ATI website and installed it. Strangely, the installer produced several errors and I get another error message at startup, but I think only the control software was affected and not the driver itself.
    After some first tests, QuickTime movies behave as expected, the preview renders are working again and the crashes on exit are also gone. Yay!
    Strange how much trouble a driver which is otherwise working perfectly can cause.

  • AE CS5 Preview rendering

    When I render previews with the RAM preview button, I often get just a short sequence and then rendering stops automatically.
    Now I thought this is due to RAM shortage.
    Thing is, when I press the normal play button, I first get a realtime playback of the rendered part and then rendering is continued.
    When I try the RAM preview button again, it just renders the same short sequence.
    - Why can't the RAM preview button render more, while the the normal play button can?
    - Why do preview renders often disappear when I try to render some more with the RAM preview button?
    I find myself pressing the preview render button over and over, with very unpredictable outcome of what will happen: rendering extra material or deleting the existing preview and render another part. Is there any way to take control over what RAM preview does?

    Thanks, this helps in understanding a bit what happens.

  • Preview rendering stops prematurely : Why?

    Hello.
    I am using a large photo (3072 x 2304) and animating the anchor point to create the pan and zoom effect between two keyframes.
    The comp is set at:
    1440 x 1080 (1.33)
    29.97fps
    The preview rendering stops prematurely. What are normally the reasons for this?
    Is the photo too big?
    Any tips would be appreciated.
    Simon

    What do you mean by "prematurely"? There's only so much frames one can squeeze into physical RAM at full res... Lower the comp resolution to Half or Quarter to extend the preview.

  • Very Slow preview rendering for lightroom 5 on import

    I am seeing very very slow rendering of preview images only when using the import function in lightroom 5. By slow, I mean for a shoot of 60 shots in raw, it could take 30 minutes before I can preview them all in the pane to see which ones I want to actually import. This was not an issue with lightroom 4. It is not an issue when using lightroom. Previews are fast there, even for images I've never pulled up before.
    My hardware is a PC, with an intell i7 chip, and 16 gig of memory. My nvidia graphics card has the latest drivers.
    I've seen a few others reporting this issue, so I'm trying to log it as a bug. Even though the dial up support text on the adobe lightroom says available 24/7, it now plays a voice recording that says only available m-f.
    Brad

    I'm having the same problem using Windows 7 (64b). I just took a shoot over the weekend for a significant birthday event. Now I can't load the photos. The work-around doesn't work as the program freezes before I get the chance to select the camera under "files".
    I recently upgraded from 3.6 to 5 as I was also noticing a slowdown in the import function. That turned out to be a bad move I think. I also deliberately cleaned up the CF card and removed all my video recordings, as this seems to be reported as part of the problem, but to no avail.
    This seems to be a pretty major bug to have in a major release that's been around for a while now, that I'm expected to pay for, and no sign of a resolution to date!

  • Macbook pro retina 15 inch running Yosemite extremely slow previews/rendering

    Hello,
    So I got the newest version of Macbook pro retina 15 inch (mid-2014) basic model with 16GB of RAM, updated the OS to Yosemite, got Adobe CC on board, was happy for a second until I tried to edit stuff in After Effects. Preview plays at 13 fps at best when rendering something basic as a shape going from one point to the other. If you add footage it is 7fps or something. Already tried some options that were suggested on other threads like disabling App Nap but so far nothing helped. Please help me out, I'm really getting frustrated because of this.
    Also, it takes ages to render final comp form Premiere Pro as well.

  • Preview rendering Very Slow

    Hi,
    Can anyone help with Preview.app slow rendering issue for large PDF files, it is very slow after upgrading to lion. (AutoCAD drawings that are PDFed)
    Small PDF documents are fine.

    Hi Guys I work with a lot of pdf files with being a student at uni and not sure these tips might help.
    Try an app called skim which is free it handles pdfs nicely and looks similar to the preview app.
    Also if a pdf is slow to scroll try selecting all the pages goto file print.  Then on the bottom left hand side of the print window select pdf and then save as pdf.  I have found on some pdfs (usually the ones in black and white and look like a photo copy) using the the print save as pdf option has then allowed me to view a pdf fine in the preview app without any issues.  Hope this is useful.
    I suspect its to do with pixels per inch or dots per inch of the document.

  • Preview rendering question

    Hey all, Mike the newbie has more questions
    I imported about 6k images into lightroom and I'm working on organizing them within the collections but my question previews. As I scroll through the library there is a delay in seeing the images as they seem to render realtime.  This seems to impact me more when the library has larger images and I'm scrolling down more.
    I imported the images using the 1:1 previews, would going with standard preview produced a better performance result?
    How about none?  I read the FAQ but it really doesn't address whether the rendering is altered by choosing this the different preview options.
    My second question about previews is there any option to rebuild them, for instance say there is a speed bump with using the standard previews, can I delete the current ones and recreate/rebuild them somehow?

    I imported the images using the 1:1 previews, would going with standard preview produced a better performance result?
    How about none?
    That's strange. There might be some small performance penalty of having 1:1 previews over standard (since they are physically bigger), but it should be marginal. What is your machine specs?
    My guess is either the machine is too slow or your expectations are too high (Lightroom is not speed daemon). Are your sure the previews have actually be built?
    My second question about previews is there any option to rebuild them, for instance say there is a speed bump with using the standard previews, can I delete the current ones and recreate/rebuild them somehow?
    Yes, you can discard 1:1 previews and rebuilt standard. Use the Library>Previews menus.

  • CS4 Locks up when building a preview/rendering

    Im on Windows XP running CS4 and I get a problem with it 'locking up' whilst building a preview or rendering.
    It doesnt happen everytime, but enough to be a problem.
    I have tried 'purge all' thinking this would 'free up' things, but no luck. When I get the lock up I hit 'control alt delete' and see the 'not responding' warning so I 'end task' only to presented with a 2 minute wait before the app finally clears.
    I never had this problem with my previous version (6.5)
    Any ideas whats causing it and can I do anything about it?

    I never had this problem with my previous version (6.5)
    Apples and Oranges. CS4 is a whole differnt beast with probably 40% or more being completely rewritten compared to 6.5. The behavior you describe doesn't sound unfamiliar, though. It mostly happens with compressed formats that are not 100% to AE's taste. It then kinda dumbly buffers as many frames as it can and when it needs to flush them to load new ones, it seems to hang for a while. Anotehr reason could be simply not enough space in the MediaCache folder, so conformed media cannot be stored persistently. This can be further compounded by using OpenGL. What footage do you use? In any case, look into disabling OpenGL and cleaning out the Media Cahce from the prefs as a first step, the nlet us know, if the issues persist.

  • Preview renders adding extra frames exponentially in Premiere Pro CC 2014

    Having this strange anomaly happen when rendering previews. The preview render dialogue box starts adding extra frames and the thing becomes an exponential loop gradually moving to 100% but never reaching it even if the render is only 10 frames long.
    On a Z800 with dual X5570 12GB RAM Intel processors Nvidia and Blackmagic Decklink 2 video cards.
    It most seems to be happening around PPro generated title GFX and with dissolves. The strange thing is I can render small sections by setting discrete in/out render areas, but there is always a small section that won't render. This has just started happening on the latest 2014 update of CC.
    Have been using CC for the previous 12+ months without incident, so it would seem to be something in the latest version. Not killing me, but it is a bit strange and kind of annoying.
    Anyone else having a similar issue?
    cheers Pete.

    This sounds like bug that was fixed in the update released this morning (CC2014.0.1. aka, 8.0.1). Please let us know if the update does not resolve your exact issue.

  • How to speed-up the Ram Preview/Rendering using Adobe After Effects Cs 5.5?

    Hi guys,
    As the the title says, how can I increase the speed or make the ram preview render a lot faster or make the speed to the fullest?
    I've done my researched already but I'm not sure if I did the right thing.
    I will list down the things that I've done so far trying to make it faster.
    1. Using the SECRET option (Pressing SHIFT) from the Preferences and ticked those two boxes - Disable layer Cache and Ignore sequence rendering errors.
    2. Settings for the Memory and Multiprocessing. (Im not sure about this part, I mean I dont know if I did the right thing)
    3. No other application's running
    My Machine's specs are.
    I'm using MSI GT70
    -i7 CPU @ 2.30ghz
    -16gb of RAM
    -Nvidia GT675m
    -64bit
    I'd really appreaciated any help and a best settings for Mutltiprocessing.
    Many thanks,

    Most of the time I have MP turned off. Most of the plug-ins that I use are not MP aware and I seldom use AE's render Cue for rendering for delivery. I use AME and keep working on projects while I'm rendering.
    Basic rules, at least 2GB per processor, at least 1 processor for other apps, Make sure the CPU's actually used matches the CPU's assigned, then test with your most common project. If you are doing something tha bogs down the system just turn it off.

  • Library Preview Rendering Slow

    I'm sure I'm missing something here and am hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I just purchased lightroom 2.3 primarily as a workflow tool for the RAW photos I take at sports events. The first step in my process is to review all the photos and remove the ones with poor composition and ones that are out of focus so that I don't spend time cleaning them up before I do any cropping.
    My problem is that the rendering of the preview thumbnails seems to take an inordinate amount of time before I can see the thumbnail in enough quality to make a decision on the focus quality. I opted to invest the time up front and generate 1:1 previews during the import process. I've got the thumbnails sized to display two thumbnails with the sidepanels hidden to use as much realestate as possible. However, when I move from thumbnail row to thumbnail row, at least one of the thumbnails is initially displayed in a blurry format and takes approximately 2 - 4 seconds to display in it's final state.
    Considering I have 353 photos to review, I'm looking at sitting 17 minutes total just waiting on the final rendering of thumbnails to decide on whether they're in focus or not. This just doesn't seem right if I selected to pre-generate 1:1 previews. So I've got to have something set wrong somewhere. Any ideas or direction would be greatly appreciated!
    Dale

    Thanks all for your thoughts and ideas. It looks like I'll just have to live with the multiple pass slow rendering in Lightroom if I want to continue to use it. I ran a test with the same batch of photos in Capture One LE, the product I intended to replace with Lightroom. Once the folder and photos were imported into Capture One and thumbs rendered for the first time, moving from one large size representation of a photo to the next (there's no "library" module, it looks more like the LR Develop module and all work is done from there) took significantly less time than in Lightroom (less than 1 second).
    Some other notes from the comments above:
    - yes, I was using very large thumbnails to scan through the 300+ photos and filter out the bad ones and yes it requires me to do a lot more scrolling. Annoying, but necessary for me. One of the more difficult things for me to do is determine if a shot was in focus or not. This decision requires a large thumbnail for my old eyes ;-)
    - I have 100Gb free on my catalog drive and 200Gb free on my data drive. I can't imagine Lightroom would require any more to render thumbnails and display photos in the develop module more quickly.
    Thanks again everyone!

  • RAM Preview/Renders begin after long delay.

    This problem began last week. Suddenly, my RAM Previews and renders cause the spinning beach ball of death, which will last anywhere from 1-3 minutes before the actual RAM Preview or render process begins. The longest being 5 minutes, but that's only happened once.
    I'm using a Mac Pro with 8GB RAM, 2 x 3 GHz Quad-Core Intel, OSX is current build at 10.5.7. And, I'm using CS4 AE.
    So, what could be causing the atrocious delays before beginning the Previews and Renders?
    Under preferences, I enabled disk cache, with max at 3500MB. The folder is located on an external drive connected with 800 Firewire. It's been set like this for a while without problems...
    Conformed media cache is set for the same drive.
    For memory prefs, I have:
    Total AE mem usage at 6.5GB, other apps have 1.5.
    Render mult frames simultaneously is checked, the longer RAM preview/faster rendering knob is set around midway point.
    Hopefully I didn't leave anything out. Thanks for the help in advance.

    Yes, it does happen in all of my projects.
    The fonts are fine. I just created a new project, typed a regular text layer with a Times, and even that RAM preview took over a minute. The render was the same.
    Well, lookee there. Just unchecked the option for rendering multi frames simultaneously and it instantly begins both processes.
    Thanks for the help. Hopefully this doesn't crop up again.

  • Choppy animation RAM preview & rendered

    Hi
    I'm using After Effects CS5.5 Version 10.5.0.253
    i'm working on an iMac 2.66 GHz Intel Core i5 -- 8 GB RAM, OXS Version 10.7.4.
    i'm creating a fairly simple animation in After Effects, manipulating the position and scale of a still image. i've imported a JPEG i created in Photoshop. my problem is that i have to start zoomed in quite far on a detail of the image, and then zoom out all the way so i need to keep it pretty hi-res in order to have a decent quality when scaled at 150%….the smallest file size/resolution i've tried that has not gotten pixelated at full size is a JPEG 4667x3121 pixels @ 200 dpi resulting in a file size 1.4 MB
    but the animation is still jumpy and choppy -- both in RAM preview as well as when rendered.
    not sure if it makes a difference or not, but i have motion blur turned on
    any help would be appreciated -- how can i make the smoothest animation possible?
    is it exporting the still image in a different format or size or does it have to do with something i'm doing inside After Effects?
    thank you

    i've attached a number of screen shots, and i hope they help understand my project and problem better. sorry for the insufficient information so far, and thanks for offering to help.
    here's a more detailed description:
    the animation is 24 seconds long. starts zoomed in on a part of an image -- and as it pans around it in a circular motion, also zooms out.
    attached photos called AE project position 1 - 3 show the beginning, middle and end points of the movements. you can see the keyframes for both position and scale. Rick, i took your advice regarding scale and used a file size that at 100% is almost the size i need. rather than zooming in to 150%, now i only have to start at 116%. in the first screenshot, i left the preview size at such a tiny zoom so that you could see the rather large size of the source image i'm using....much larger than the 1440x900 frame.
    i have tried using keyframe interpolation and the curve on the position parameter to smooth out the speed. screenshot called AE project position curve shows this.
    of course the problem is that if i do 'rove across time' with keyframe interpolation on the position keyframes, then i have to change the placement of the scale keyframes in order for the movement to still work as desired.
    i have turned on motion blur on the layer.
    i have then pre-composed the layer and in a new composition, added Timewarp effect (for the motion blur only). as you can (screenshot called AE project composition with effects) i set the shutter angle really high to get lots of blur to try to mask the choppiness.
    i pre-composed the layer so that i could turn on the little rasterize button. to be honest, i don't know what this does or why it's not available on a layer before it's pre-composed, but it was recommended to me to have it turned on.
    when i RAM preview that at about 25% display size, it is ALMOST perfectly smooth -- minus a couple small jitters that are practically negligible.
    when i RAM preview at 100% it is very choppy.
    i have tried rendering a few times with different settings. i have tried a few with Photo-JPEG codec at about 75% quality, both at full size as well as half (i'd like to keep it to 1440x900 export if possible)
    i have also tried rendering to Apple ProRes 422, also 75% quality, tried both full size and half.
    when i watch any of these rendered results in Quicktime 7, they are jittery. some more than others, but nothing has been satisfactorily smooth...
    hope this helps understand my issue a bit better. if you have any advice about how i can make this the smoothest possible, i'd appreciate it.
    thanks
