Ideas For Project

Hey guys I'm a third year computing student. I'm looking for ideas for a 500 hour project(note willing to spend more time if necesary). The catch is I will be starting from scratch as far as Java programming goes. I'm aloud 30 hours of project time to learn Java. I've looked at the basics of java today and it seems quite nice syntax wise.
Anyway if any of you guys have some ideas but not the time then please feel free to offer me some suggestions. I would prefer to do something pushing the boundaries as i get a $4000 grant if the wise New Zealand government deem the project to be worthy of a technology grant.
Thanks in advanced, oh and this is my first post yay me.

hmm, maybe. Has nothing like that been tried before in
java?
oh and just to be in keeping with 90% of post in this
forum.
Can you give me the code :)You have been very observant... and no.
I don't believe an RDBMS has been written entirely in Java...because in addition to the act of creating the database, you have the extra requirement of figuring out how to make it NOT run like a pig...as some DBs use raw partitions and their own filesystems to extract maximum performance... and a 100% Java Database would have performance issues to contend with..although the idea of pure platform portability would be a big plus..it might not outweigh the transaction cost.

  • Any idea for project title for final year?

help me! i am out of idea
but i know i work good with Java,
so plz suggest me some topic related to Java programming..
    thanks alot

it's quite hard for me as a student, i got zero
    knowledge about database
and stand alone system is better for me i think
anyway thank alot, i am still searching for a
suitable topicWell why did you say "I work good with Java" then? Besides, it's not our job to come up with your final project, I'm sure google will be more than happy to find you several possible subjects.

  • Ideas for developing new Mini project

    Hi All,
we want to develop our programming skill by doing some mini project in Java technology.
A group of 3 members want to involve in this project with IDE as JDeveloper. So anyone can suggest a mini project with some 10 days duration. We are strong in Swing-EJB. We also intersted to work in JSP,Java script. Also ready to learn new technology..
So whichever applicable suggest us or give some ideas for the project to improve our skills.
Note: we are one year experienced in java Programming.

    Hi Lrj1985,
According to your description, in order to allow users to know the probability of collecting from a debtor dependent on different dimension, you nedd to produce an OLAP cube to perform this. Since you haven't done this for a few years, now what you
are looking for is that the ideas, starting points or direction to build the OLAP cube, right?
In this case, here are some links which describe how to build a cube step by step, please see:

  • A Few Ideas for a Future Photoshop Project

Sorry, guys.  Everything is installed and working nicely here.  The dog has not eaten my keyboard, and I have not got any points on my CC License (only because the Photoshop cops haven't caught me yet).  So I thought I'd share this nice idea for a photo manipulation project.  There are few truely orginal ideas out there when it comes to art and expression, but I can't say as I have seen this particular one before.  (Close, but not quite)
So I give you 88 ways to distort a hotel
    http://victorenrich.com/?post_type=product&paged=1
    A couple of tasters
I suspect this might have been done with After Effects rather than Photoshop

When I said "Close, but not quite" in the above post, it was Christophe Huet that came to mind.  I first came across his work some years ago with a series of images that featured homeless down-and-outs sinking into the pathment.  I remember I tried and failed to do the ripples back then.  I do a lot more 3d effects with shading nowadays, so I think I could nail it now.
He is pretty prolific, so be warned you could spend the next hour scrolling through these.  It's impressive work though, and full of ideas to kick start your own creative juices.

  • Give me some ideas for the project.

    Hi,folks
I am not familiar with programming in web services. Now i have a project related to web services need to finish. I want to someone give me some ideas for the project. how can i implement the access control services. is there anyone can give me some related links for me to learn.
Project Title: Implementing an access control service
    Project Description:
Web services are emerging as a new approach to system construction and will make a major impact on the engineering of future business systems. They will allow a move from enterprise to inter-enterprise computing. However, with inter-enterprise computing, there are major problems with providing access to shared data, given that enterprises will not wish to share all data with partners.
This project aims to investigate this problem by developing a prototype of an access control service that will help decide whether or not data access should be permitted. In essence, companies will outsource their access control to this service and so will not need to maintain their own access control lists for a potentially rapidly changing set of users.
    Suggested Platform: Windows or Linux
    Suggested Languages & Tools: Java

Well, the approach I've come accross is a central server which is typically accessed indirectly from the web servers (e.g. through SOAP protocol or RMI).
The remote server sends a user id and a password (or more likely a digest of the password), and receives a session token, basically just a random string of characters which is checked with the central server each time a secure transaction is attempted. The token will be stored in a session object, or perhaps directly in a cookie or in the URLs.
Active session tokens are stored on the central server for comparison. This means the password doesn't have to be retained in the server.
It's possible for the session token to be transfered if the user switches from one site to another on the same authentication server.
Sun distributes one of these beasties, by the way, so you could take a look at their product specs.

  • Ideas for Java Project

    Hi,
Yet another desperate student here seeking ideas for a Master's Degree Java Thesis!!
I've been given an idea for image analysis, i.e. counting and measuring images from a digital camera, but it all seems to have been done before.
I'm interested in the areas of developing an online knowledge base or project repository for an IT department, but again, has it all been done before...yes.
Can anyone please suggest something...anything that I can get my teeth into?
    Thanks in advance..
    Natalie.

    Hi,
You can try a package named: JTwain, which is available at http://asprise.com/product/jtwain.
JTwain supports all kinds of digital cameras and scanners. You can use Java to access, contorl digital cameras and scanners, and of course, to acquire images with flexible settings.
The developers' guide is available @ http://asprise.com/product/jtwain/devGuide.php
In the simplest case, one line of Java code can solve your problem.
    Good luck!

  • Ideas for Title, Credit on Video Project

    Hi all:
Just looking for ideas for a video project for children that I've about completed. The elements left are the titles and credits.
So, I thought about making backgrounds/text with Elements. Drawing type? Crayon? Colorful? Pastel? Floating? Ragged Edge Background?
Besides ideas that are youthful...."kid like graphics", I'm not sure how to keep the text aligned so that it doesn't jump when I dissolve or transistion between video text events.
Hope this makes sense. Ask away if it doesn't.
    All ideas appreciated.
    Mike

Thanks Ward and Grant.....good suggestions to get my mind working. Sometimes you get in a rut with ideas.
Grant, as to your question/comment on text alignment.
Most video editors accept just about any image that a person can create using a program like PS or PSE. You just have to import the images in as bitmaps or PSD...etc. My idea was to create my text elements, in this case, credit and titles, using PSE because it's so much more powerful than a basic CG or credit generator.
So, I'd have multiple pages with lines of text on each page. Creating those isn't unique.
But, the one thing that I can't seem to make the work flow easy with is this: If you create an image with PSE that has one line of text on it, then how can you easily repeat that placement of text in another image? Horizontal and vertical? I thought about using the grid, but that seems sort of----well---sloppy. Isn't there another "sure fire" method. For instance, in most video editing software packages you can place the text based on X and Y coordinates. That makes it easy to do over and over again. Oh, hey maybe the key in doing this would be to simply copy and then re-edit the text.....but I'm not sure about that yet. Maybe I'm just dreaming or complaining too much.
Hey thanks again for the ideas.

  • Ideas for masters project in algorithmic problems?

    Hi,
I'm about to start my masters project in computer science. The topic is algorithmic problems. So I'm wondering if you have any ideas for a project?
I have some ideas, but I'd like to get more. One of the ideas is to "remake the most annoying app you are forced to use". I'm not really forced to use any annoying apps though, perhaps some of you guys are? It has to require some sort of clever algorithmic design.
    Thanks!

Well I could tell you some complex ones I got in touch with on my college, but they're pretty scenario-specific, so I don't know how will you like them:
    1) Make a fully-playable checkers game with advanced AI.
    2) Find fastest route from any point A to any point B on a grayscale map, with white pixel being the lowest altitude, and black being the highest altitude.
    3) Make a system for student group substitution. This must include: StudentA from GroupA wants to switch to GroupB, but there are no spaces available in GroupB. StudentB from GroupB wants to switch to GroupC, which is also full. StudentC from GroupC wants to go to GroupA, but only switch available to him is an offer to go to GroupB from StudentB which he can execute. When he does it, he could switch with a StudentA for GroupA. But, he won't do that because he's not sure StudentA wants a spot in GroupB. Design a system which would recognize this and list all the pathways so each student can get into group he wants by switching groups to that target group. Note: this is said to be extremely difficult to make btw
    4) ...
I'll edit if I remember more.
These were from few ago and it's possible I missed something in presenting them to you, I wrote them in my own words.

  • PPL i need an idea for my final year project

    Hello ppl
I have posted this topic before and am posting it once again...... I m a student of B.Sc final Year in Software Development....... I m looking for an idea for my final year project......I m very good at programming in Java..... also have some hands on experince of XML... nowadys reading abt voice XML.....
So i anybody of u can suggest me something i will be extremely grateful.... i will prefer doing something for mobile phones... i.e. my target wud be J2ME..... but any other idea can also work...... but plz keep in mind that the project shud be of such length that it can last for 1 year..... also it shud be challenging......
    Thanx in Advance....
I need it ppl... plz reply

www.jabber.org does stuff with XML and instant messaging, and occasionally hints at involving phones. you might get some ideas from what they're doing.

  • Trying to dynamically load CSS for project at compile time via config XML file to select CSS file.

I'm using the same code base to compile different versions of a project. Each project has different base fonts. I've created multiple css files that use the same style names. The idea being that in the code I reference the style names, then the loaded CSS determines which font (and size, color, etc) is used for each style name.
The CSS files are compiling to SWFs, and those SWFs are referenced in config.xml files. Before compiling, I select the config file to use.
I am loading the CSS SWF files via the StyleManager in the Application.mxml, like so:
      styleManager.loadStyleDeclarations( _contentData.elements( 'cssPath' ).@path )
The path traces out correctly as:
    assets_embed/styles/project2.swf
For some reasone I must include an fx:Style line in the Application.mxml file or no fonts are recognized. Example:
      <fx:Style source="assets_embed/styles/project1.css"/>
If I reference the css for project one (as done above) then most, but not all, styles work. Some styles reference the fonts from the project 1 css, others properly use fonts from project 2 swf. If I point to the CSS for the project I'm compiling in the <fx:Style > tag then all fonts work, but that defeats the goal of using XML rather than code to identify the styles.
So, why do I need the fx:Style line if the css is being loaded via StyleManager?
Why is there "cross talk" between style definitions?
Is there a better way to select styles at compile time?

I read this quickly so I might have missed a detail.  I think your describing an issue with recent Flex releases that is described in the fine print somewhere.  If you don't have any fonts embedded in the main app and are only bringing in fonts embedded in CSS SWFs, you have to force-link the EmbeddedFontRegistry by adding something like this to the main app's script block.
    import mx.core.EmbeddedFontRegistry; EmbeddedFontRegistry;
(Yes, "EmbeddedFontRegistry" is in there twice, once to define the fully qualified name, the other to create a class dependency to force the linking).

  • Ideas for a beginner to program

I've started mentoring a young student - teaching him LabVIEW. He
is enjoying it and we have covered the basics. Now I need to come up
with a project for him to start writing a program(s) on his own. For
the time being, I would like to keep it to calculations/analysis/display
kinds of things (no Daq hardware). I was wondering if anyone had ideas
(or previous experience) of such kinds of programs - something
relatively easy at this point, but useful/fun enough to keep him interested.
    Thanks,

There are 10 kinds of people: those who understand binary, and those who don't.

Here is an idea for a nice little project would be:
(assuming no Daq or GPIB hardware).
Open a binary file. Parse the file to identify the OP codes and operands. Translate it to "english". Display the translation and write it to another file.
You can expand to opening a serial port, communicating to a serial device. Interpret the data (especially if there is some sort of waveform to analyze). Plot the data "real-time". Display warnings or conditions if low or high limits are reached, or if a number of samples has been achieved.
Prompt for user intervention (what to do with the data, ie: save it to file, display it, print it, etc). Allow for user control of the vi (Run / Pause / Stop / Abort).
The above should provide basic functionality where ther
e is no instrument to control or a data-acquisition system to monitor.
Are you looking for real projects? Maybe a bit more challenging?

  • Ideas for a nice website?

For a while now, I have been trying to come up with ideas for a website of my own.
I have iWeb '09, and I would like to put my .Mac Account to good use. I would like to create a website with a nice purpose and an easy interface.
Does anyone have any ideas for a website of my own? I have a webserver and a database that I could use as well.
Any ideas or suggestions would be great. Thank you!
    Jeffrey

    Hmmm –
Porsche105 I think you'd be far better off spending just a little time now working out exactly what it is you want to say and do. What's your site's purpose? It will save you so much time.
Imagine if you just start designing a site just because you've seen a template you like but you don't know what content you're going to put into it. In a few weeks you might have to start the whole site again because you've realised what it is you really want to do with your site and the way you've designed it doesn't work or look right.
It's the first part of any design project: Questioning. Why do you want a site? What's it going to do? Who's the audience? How's it going to function? Even if you've just got some very rough answers to these questions, it will help you enormously.
    Hope this helps.
