Idvd and quicktime 7 - downgrade needed?

I have run into the problem of stage 3 hanging. I have tried to follow all the advice in the many topics about long burns with no luck. I have recently upgraded to Tiger and Quicktime 7. I noticed one reference suggesting it might be wise to downgrade to 6.5. Can anyone corroborate that as a potential solution?
A few details:
- I am using the hack that allows me to create a disk image
- In the past (Jaguar and QT 6.5) I was able to do a 30 minute project in less than 2 hours.
- I can now do very short projects with no problem
- A 20 minutes project now seems to hang after about two hours
- A different 40 minute project seems to hang after about 3 or 4 hours
- An important point is that I am now using Best Quality instead of Performance. Maybe that is the problem. I am currently running a test with performance selected.
Let me explain what I mean by iDVD 'hangs': I watch Activity Monitor and I also monitor the size of the project file. In the case of the 20 minute project it builds up at a steady pace till it gets to about 750 MB in size. then it stops growing. A look at activity monitor shows that the computer is still writing out (to what, I don't know) but at a much slower pace. If I inspect the process in detail, all the parameters in the iDVD process do seem to keep changing so it has not stalled completely, but I never seem to get out of step 3. I give up after about 5 or 6 hours of this. The size of the project never grows beyond that 750 MB number.
As for what I have done to try to follow advice:
clean up master hd to 16 GB (movie and dvd are on big extermal drive)
cache cleaner
macjanitor
Preferential Treatment
repair permissions

I had 16G free on the Tiger TiBook and 60G free on the external drive.
There were two iMovie that I was tring to get on one iDVD - one 40 minutes and one 20 minutes. On the Tiger machine, I tried making a DVD with only the 20 minutes movie and gave up after ten hours or so.
In contrast, the Panther machine (that originally made the iMovies) was able to complete the entire 60 minute iDVD in six hours. I do concede that there was more free hard drive space on the Panther machine - maybe 25G.
I really do think it was an issue of a corruption of some sort that the Panther machine somehow was able to 'overlook.' There were 3 minutes of suspect clips that when deleted from the project - the Tiger machine could manage just fine.
Not totally satisfying explanation but the I think I am close to the truth.

Although slide show creation in iDVD is easier, and I prefer it, Sue is right. Use iMovie which gives much more flexibility and allows use of Ken Burns effect as well as varying the length of each slide then export to Quicktime in the quality which suits you.

IDVD and iLife '11

I just purchased a new 15" Macbook with retina display however it doesn't have iDVD and I'm in need of the program. I understand that I need to download iLife however I cannot find the program to download and there was not a startup disk, or any other disk for that matter, with the laptop upon purchase.
What can I do?

If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides themes from iDVD 5-7. The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:

You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.

ITunes and Quicktime Error after automatice Apple update, need help!!!

So I currently have a new labtop with windows vista. I have been runining iTunes for the pass 3 months already no problems. The Apple automatic update has never caused any problems till now. Quicktime needed to be updated today, and I accecpted the update, prior to that iTunes and Quicktime was working properly. Once the quicktime update was complete, it restarted my computer like usual. Then when I tried to open iTunes this error came up:
"iTunes cannot run because it has detected a problem with your audio configuration"
Now I checked the audio configuration and nothing was changed or anything, that has not been touched at all, so I still think it had to do with the update. The next error was came up when I tried to open Quicktime and it read:
"Runtime Error!
Program C://ProgramFiles/QuickTime/QuickTimePlayer.exe
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information"
So as long as I have been using Quicktime and iTunes I have never encountered this, I tried to re-install but the error kept coming up after it was installed. Please help me out!

Why do I need Quick time 7 and Quicktime 10 ?

I have just migrated from iMac5 (2.16 GHz) Mac OS 10.4.11 Quicktime 7.6.4 to a new imac 3.06 Mac OS 10.6.2 Quicktime 10.0.
Some of my quicktime files play ok but others prompt me to download quicktime version 7. Why do I need to do this ? (There seem to be a lot of problems with this looking at the forums). All the files play on the old mac. Why isn't Quicktime forward compatible or why is there no import facility so that you can make your old files compatible ?
Or am I missing something ?

Because your system thinks you are missing specific codecs required for the playback of certain compression formats. In some cases this may be an installation problem in which the codec was "lost" or "orphaned" during the update process. In others it may be a need to update the component to work properly under the dual QT X/7 framework installed under the Snow Leopard OS. You need to check the Inspector/Finder Info or similar window to determine what specific codec is causing the problem and then re-install or update that specific codec/component/package.
(There seem to be a lot of problems with this looking at the forums).
Most of the problems are "self-inflicted" by individuals who, rather than studying the problem symptoms, analyzing them to determine their cause, and then fixing the problems, elect to immediately delete and re-install software -- often attempting to mix components from different operating systems and/or update versions of the software in their haste.

I am running both Leopard and Snow Leopard variations of QT v7.6.6 and all of my "old" files have remained compatible -- to include MPEG-2 video and a limited number of third-party supported compression formats. Since my configurations continue to work properly, my first guess is that you have an unresolved configuration problem or inability for your QT X 64-bit routines to communicate/switch properly with the 32-bit routines as required for your content.
Why do I need Quick time 7 and Quicktime 10?
Technically, you probably don't. However, as an old QT 7 Pro user who likes many of the QT 7 Player controls/options/features better than QT X's new but more basic features, I maintain both in active service and tend to use QT 7 as the default player of most of my work flows. Still, this is up to the individual. I am in no hurry to rush the changeover from an older but still more reliable QT technology to a more modern, but as yet, less mature and well tested "new" QT technology. In short, I feel it best to make the most of both dispensations during the development of this "new" version of QT.

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

Can no longer copy and paste from browser into illustrator - get placeholder that says "QuickTime and a decompressor are needed to see this picture"

We upgraded our iMacs to Yosemite and lost functionality on Illustrator CS4. We can save a picture to the desktop and then drag or 'place' the image to the Illustrator document, but if we drag directly from the browser or cut/copy/paste, we get a placeholder stating 'QuickTime and a decompressor are needed to see this picture'. .png, .psd, and .tiff files give a missing plugin error.

Illustrator CS4 and Yosemite aren't fully compatible. Some folks might have succeeded in getting it to run, but most have not.

ITunes and Quicktime downgrading...

Hi there... I have a G4 and am using OSX 10.3.9. This is my Pro-Tools computer as I have an older version of ProTools that doesn't run on 10.4 or upwards.
So... The story so far. I updated my computer with the more recent versions of iTunes and Quicktime (from iTunes 6.0.3 & Quicktime 6.5), as I was advised by a "friend" to do this. However, it turns out that the new versions don't work with OSX 10.3.9. So I was then advised by the same "friend" to delete (don't ask, as I'm still not sure who's pulling my strings) these recent versions of QuickTime and iTunes from my applications folder and to delete all the preferences associated with them, which I've now done.
We then located the old versions that we were originally using i.e. iTunes 6.0.3 and Quicktime 6.5 and have been trying to reinstall these... But with little success.
So my questions are:
Do I need to do an "Archive and Install" from the original OSX 10.3 disks?
OR do I need to "Archive and Install" using the original OSX 10.1.3 disks?
Also, during an "Archive and Install", are all my files safe i.e. they won't vanish (we have an album's worth of material on there that the record label are expecting us to give them very soon)?
If the above fails...
Is there anyway of simply installing the older versions of iTunes and Quicktime from web links?

Go to HD>Library>Receipts - remove the receipt iTunesX.pkg to the trash - you should now be able to install iTunes.
Have a b/u of your critical data before you do any 'archive/install' which I cannot see is necessary. Your friend appears to be steering you in directions that is causing you problems.
Why would you even consider doing a 'archive/install' from the 10.1.3 disk?
I am not sure about QT - however you can remove the QT receipt and see if that helps.

Did you use migration with the new OS or did you reinstall the CS4 apps from the original media? If you didn't, then you should uninstall CS4 making sure to check the box to remove preferences, run the Cleaner tool (Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6) and then reinstall CS4. CS4 is totally untested and unsupported on the latest versions of Mac OSes.

If there is no iDVD on Your Mac (and it's not on newer Macs as Apple discarded it) then You need a program that can do this.
Your Mac can burn CDs and DVDs - BUT DVD as Data-DVDs not as Video-DVDs - they need a program to be encoded and STRUCTURED as such.
• iDVD is part of the boxed version of iLife'11 and can only be bought outside Apple as on Amazon and e-bay
• DVD Studio pro - Part of FinalCut Studio Pro bundle - this to has expired and can only be bought second handed. (High price and tough learning Curve - but best ever done.)
• Roxio Toast™ - Not as elegant as iDVD - but has many other positive additions (I like it as 10-Pro incl BD-component) (now version 11)
• Burn - only free alternative I know of on internet. Very simple - Just for doing a plain Video-DVD

Quicktime Pro will do full screen streaming videos that are compatible with Quicktime installed Codecs. If the video of the Olympics on the website has a specific URL to go straight to the video, then yes, you can call upon it with Quicktime Pro's player and then watch it fullscreen.
If the video of the Olympics was embedded such a way that you can't find the direct link to the video, then the limitation is how the webpage is designed. Thanks to Flip4Mac, there is now also a Windows Media codec you can install for Quicktime as well:

Although some video software like Elgato's EyeTV don't work with it yet. If you are using Elgato's software, don't download it, and rather download Windows Media Player for Mac OS X:
