IDVD preview not what is burned

Ok, I give up! This is my 8th attempt with this project!!
I'm trying to burn an iMovie project that is about an hour long. It includes one chapter marker and a short (50 sec) intro movie in the autoplay. In the preview all is fine. The project starts up with the short movie then goes to the menu and the selected chapter plays fine. Only after I finally burn the DVD (which takes anywhere from 10-13 hours to complete) It auto plays with the main movie, instead of the intro and when I go to the marked chapter there is no audio. I've tried tweeking things a bit (extracting audio, etc). On the initial attempt I believe the intro was there, but the main movie was out of sync. I've burned other smaller projects with no problem. HELP! I keep all my iMovie projects on an external hard drive.

Should it take a 66 minute iMovie
10-11 hours to burn?
On a PowerBook G4 with iDVD 4 - Certainly!
Does motion have to be on for autoplay
to work?
Probably
I've done it both ways. And even burned the
disk image with Disk Utility with the same results.
I just can't figure out why the preview works
perfectly, but not the "burned" DVD.
How does the disk image play with Apple's DVD Player application? You may have an issue with your hardware DVD player.
Preview uses your RAW source data and is really 'for position only'. It DOES NOT guarantee the encoded disc will operate the same way.

  • IDVD will not launch to burn DVD

In my iMovie HD 5.0.2, the iDVD will not launch to burn a DVD. I have tried everything. When clicking the iDVD, it says to go to Finder to launch. In Finder, I go to applications and click iDVD and get:You cannot use this version of the application iDVD with this version of Mac OSX.
    What are my options???

Just a little confused. I already have iphoto, imovie, garage band etc that would be in a ilife download so what are the benefits? Currently, when I click for software upgrades, there are none. Would downloading ilife really change anything?

  • IDVD will not play my burned DVD lecture!!

I have a DVD for a lecture that I'm supposed to view for work.  This is a burned DVD.  I am ABLE to play this DVD on my DVD player at home but I cannot watch this video on my Macbook Pro using iDVD.  It says "Not Permitted" in a grey screen when you press play.  Is there another DVD program that I can use to watch this DVD on?

Does the DVD play in other players or on other computers?
Try the following basic trouble shooting steps that are mentioned on many posts.
    Save as a disk image
Burn disk image using Disk Utility at a slower speed (2x or 4x)
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93006
    Use DVD-R (not +/-RW or +R)
    Use Maxcell or Verbatim disks

  • Idvd does not sync when burning to dvd

I am using a MacBook Pro with OSX, FCP 7 and iDVD 7 or 8 (it's burning now, so can't confirm).  I have a 64 minute video (that includes motions, etc in iDVD.  I exported the FCP to QT movie using the default settings.  Everything remains in sync in FCP and iDVD.  When I burn to a disc, it goes out of sync about half way through the movie.  I have searched for solutions in the support community but things I have tried do not work.
I have one more question, but I may have to go to FCP community.  I export to QT with default settings.  Is there another way to export that does not compress so much?
    Thank you for your help.

I did notice the "sequence" indicated 32 bit and all the clips, wav music, etc. are 16 bit.  Is that normal?
    May be but I would.
    • Convert all material to formats that FinalCut has easy to use and that match the Final product (Movie)
    • especially the Audio file .wma, wav etc and 32-bit - is no good start
    - convert them to .aiff 16-bit 44.1kHz or 48kHz
    • Set up a NEW Project - BUT FIRST select - right kind of project depending on material - AND FINAL MOVIE PROPERTIES.
THEN FIRST - Start a NEW PROJECT - Else it will not work.

  • DVD will not pause after burning

The DVD I create with iDVD will not pause after burning. I've tried various DVD players with the same result. Everything else about the disc seems fine. I'm using a DVD-R disc, with iDVD 5.0.1
I have burned DVDs in the past without this problem! I seriously need advice, thanks!!

    Hello artisshiny,
if you feel that you have performance issues on your Mac in general (and iDVD in particular), try to do the following:
    1. find the file com.apple.iDVD.plist and trash it, then empty the trash.
    2. free up some space on your hard drive (20 GB should be free when working with iDVD)
    3. repair permissions with Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities) and reboot.
    4. run software like DiskWarrior or Macjanitor
    hope this helps

  • Audio breaks up in iDVD preview/will not encode in burn

One of the folks in the iDVD group suggested I try here....This is the first iDVD5 project I'm trying to burn (of the first movie I've done in iMovieHD). All is well until I preview in iDVD then the audio/music track make a similar sort of broken up sound to what you would get if playing a CD on a portable player with your battery about to die. I used 2 songs - one purchased from iTunes store, one taken from a purchased CD. Both songs are a mess. Thought the problem might be in previewing iDVD project so went ahead and tried to burn a DVD. It couldn't encode the audio. Could the iTunes song be the culprit? Has anyone else experienced this broken audio and were you able to fix it? Thanks for any help you can offer.

I had similar experiences and discovered a couple things. They may sound crazy, but they worked for me:
Which of the two timelines are you using for your audio tracks in iMovie? I once used the bottom one only, and had errors with audio encoding every time. I moved the songs to the upper audio timeline and voila! It encoded and burned perfectly. Go figure!
I also fiddled around with "Best Quality" and "Best Performance" in iDVD. When I select "Best Quality" with a short movie, I get audio encoding errors every time. If I select "Best Performance" it encodes and burns perfect.
I'm not sure why either of these two things should matter, but for me they cause audio breakup in iDVD preview and then audio encoding errors...even though they play fine in iMovie and even exporting to QT as you also have...maybe one of these is causing your problem as well. Good luck!

  • IDVD will not burn DVD or preview

I made a DVD in IDVD and burned a DVD last week. I went back into IDVD to replace some photos and movies and when I tried to burn another DVD, the wheel spins and the progress screen comes up but does not progress or burn. I tried different DVDs but same result.
When I am in IDVD, I am also unable to preview the DVD project. I can open up the individual folders and see the photos & movies but when I go to preview it, nothing happens. Is the problem with IDVD? I have 5.01.

delete the iDVD plist file "com.apple.iDVD.plist"
repair disk permissions with disk utility
make sure you have 15-20GB of free space on your startup drive
    try again....

  • Content appears in iDVD preview but not on burned disc

    Hi there,
I am using a MacBook running Leopard.
I have burned 2 other DVDs using iDVD and havent had this particular issue. I put 5 videos on a DVD. I preview the videos before burning the disc to be sure they appear and are linked to the right button, etc etc. All looks fine. When I select that video to play on my DVD player after I have burned the DVD, I get nothing. Just the Sony DVD brand screen. I have cleaned the disc but it still isnt playing at all. It is almost as if there is nothing there. But it shows up just fine in preview before I burn the disc.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Does the finished iDVD play on your mac but not on your home DVD player?
If this is the case, please try a variety of DVD Players at a store that sells these set tops to find out if this happens on most units or not.
    Also you say,
I get nothing. Just the Sony DVD brand screen.
Are you referring to the media / DVD Brand or the default screen on a sony set top player?
if it's the latter, try adjusting the inputs and outputs on the set top dvd player thru your remote control.
Lastly, are you using Verbatim / Maxell DVD-R media or some other media?

  • IDVD is not working in Mavericks... what now?

I am very upset that iDVD is not working in Mavericks! I need the ability to burn DVDs for family who is unable to access the internet. Any patches or fixes available to make this software usable again? I am very disappointed that Apple would do this without warning users that previously purchased software would be incompatible with the new OS.

I am also having problems with iDVD under Mavericks. I have used iDVD for many years creating DVD's for family members and archiving our vacations. It worked great under Snow Leopard, Lion, and Mountain Lion, but now Mavericks is a different situation.
I have two basic problems, (1) after importing the video I want to use, I play it back to preview and a small band shows up at the top of the screen that is not in sync with the rest of the screen. And (2) when showing a slideshow using standard jpegs there are color issues on playback. Help,  I need my iDVD back!

A few months ago, I purchased a new iMac. I recently created a movie using iMovie. Then I found out that iDVD is not included. So I have the problem that I want to burn a movie that I can play on my DVD player and watch on a television. I rang Applecare and was told that I need a program called BURN.
Is this correct? I can export the movie from iMovie in a m4v format, but I think I need to convert this to iso format before I can burn the disc.
I know there are programs like TOAST that will do this, but it is expensive.
I would be very grateful for any assistance.

Burn will not do what you want, and there is no real substutute for iDVD.
Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac?
Apple insists that the entire world has access to fast broadband (and are prepared to pay for the considerable bandwidth usage) and wants to distribute home movies to friends and relatives via download (iCloud, YouTube, Facebook, whatever) rather than mailing them a DVD. The fact that in reality not all users do, has so far had no effect on this policy. If you scream and shout loudly enough down the phone Apple may send you a free copy of iDVD. Stating that they would return their brand new Mac unless they received a copy of iDVD worked for some, but that is now said to have been withdrawn by Apple.
Also, you can complain bitterly via Apple’s Feedback link, perhaps suggesting that Apple could have provided a choice between burning DVDs and distributing home movies by other means. You may feel that Apple should not dictate how you destribute family videos or photos to distant relatives and friends, and should not assume that every user is prepared to pay for the excessive bandwidth usage charged by ISPs for huge downloads from the App Store:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/
Whilst Macs with a Superdrive continue to be able to burn video DVDs, the software for so doing, iDVD, is no longer included in the iLife bundle that came with OS 10.7 Lion (which also omitted iWeb) or that comes with OS 10.8 Mountain Lion. And it is no longer included in the iLife 11 from the online Apple Store: http://www.apple.com/ilife/. Your only solution is to look on Amazon or eBay and try to get an older version that includes iDVD 7, i.e. iLife version 9 onwards. You should also do this if you plan to buy a new Mac anytime soon, as stocks of iLife that include iDVD will not be available for ever.
However, the vastly more expensive FCPX can burn a DVD without iDVD or DVD Studio Pro involvement, but lack the themes etc of iDVD. Also, of course, there is Roxio Toast, which is the best software for burning anything but again does not offer the flexibility of iDVD.
And if you think Microsoft are any better, their new Windows 8 operating system will not play DVDs, or burn them, unless customers buy an extra upgrade, the company has announced:  http://www.gizmag.com/windows-8-no-dvd-playback/22443/
In other words, computer manufacturers have declared optical media as dead, long before consumers are ready to stop using them, which is fine as long as they offered us a choice, but they won’t even do that. Flexibility and intuitive use of a computer seems to be a thing of the past.

  • IDVD will not burn anything!

Any movie I try to Burn won't. iDVD says it’s over 4 gig when the movie file is only 700 MB with no extra buttons, music, vidoes or anything else! I don't know what happened to it! It used to work. What do I do?

    Hi
iDVD do not Care about Gbs or Mbs - ONLY Time (Movie + Menu = Duration)
I have movies on 500Mb that do not fit and Movies on 50Gb that fit's nicely. Duration is the only thing that counts.
iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (version 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1) and iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST (but not always for short movies e.g. up to 45 minutes in total)
    • Best Performances
(movies + menus  less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD (Can be best for short movies)
    • High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6)
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
Menu can take 15 minutes or even more - I use a very simple one with no audio or animation like ”Brushed Metal” in old Themes.
    About double on DL DVDs.
You do not use iMovie !
OK - Where did Your movie originate and How did You go from this (in what codec) to iDVD ?

  • IDVD Will not Burn DVD's

I have searched the forum for answers for this and have so far not found any. I am sure that I saw something about 6 months ago which explained why the problem was occurring and how to get around it. Maybe you can remind me?
Basically I have created a project in iDVD 08 and tried to burn it. It goes through all of the procedures and then spits the disk out without anything on it.
I have a feeling that this is a know glitch with iDVD and something to do with the themes. I have nothing wrong with my MacBook Pro which has 4gb ram and 30gb hard drive available. I know that there is a simple solution to this and would appreciate it if the people who posted 6 months ago could let me know what it is.

    How long is your project?
If you are trying to burn 1-1/2 hour or longer DVD, then 30gb free is likely not enough space.
    Other than that...
Are you getting an error message when it spits out the disk?
Are you using DVD-R or DVD-RW?
    SL or DL disk?
Once the disk has ejected, if you reinsert, what does finder do? It's possible the burn actually did start, but failed almost immediately. In which case, if your disk is a plain R, it may no longer be considered writable.
It's also possible iDVD completes the render, but is just asking you for a blank disk.

  • Idvd 08  shuts down after building, idvd will not burn a dvd

Dvd studio pro burns fine, Burning a DVD data disk works fine. Burning a project in Idvd 08 will not burn anything. It simply quits before finishing and spits out an empty dvd disk. I have a imac g5 power pc 2.1 ghz, 500gb hd, 2.5 gb ram and I am running idvd 08 version 7.0. I have tried reinstalling idvd and have even repaired permissions. What do I do? What could it be?

    Hi
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows.*
    • *Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb*
    • Hard disk is untidy. Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Delete iDVD pref file - *or rather start a new user/account* - log into this and re-try
iDVD pref file resides. Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences and is named.
    com.apple.iDVD.plist
While iDVD is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iDVD.
    • Program miss-match. iDVD 5.0.2, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK - DON’T work under Leopard
    • Program miss-match. iDVD 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match. iDVD’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.5.5 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • iDVD (08) v7 Locate theme folder. Move out iDVD1, iDVD 2 and eventually iDVD4 folders to desktop - re-try
    • Try a Cleaning CD/DVD that cleans the laser lens on the DVD burner/player
iDVD 6.0.4 and iDVD 7.0.1 are compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard
Last resort. from Craig. Solved the problem!! Finally!!
I deleted every iDVD application and folder from my boot drive,
emptied the trash and then installed iDVD 08 using the customize option
and I am up and running.
If You do a re-install be sure to get rid of all iDVD old parts AND then EMPTY the Trash-basket !
    iDVD updated ?
    Apple Codec updated ?
Start a New Clean project - or delete project assets
