IE11 trying to resolve proxy for DUMMY 00 host on first new tab

Internet Explorer Version 11.0.9600.17420
IE 11.0.14 (KB3003057)
Windows 7 SP1 32bit
While testing IE 11 in offices with slow connections our test users reported strange application hangs when opening the first new tab. The initial load of the home page and all subsequent tabs after the first new one are working just fine.
The hangs will persist for nearly 2 minutes and then IE will load the desired page just fine without any user interaction. It's as if the application hangs somewhere in a loop.
While trying to solve the issue we were able to pinpoint it to our proxy.pac in which we're using the "IsInNet" function to determine if a certain host is in a specific subnet. After a few Wireshark traces we found that when opening the first new
tab (and only then) IE 11 will try to resolve the proxy for a host named "DUMMY<00>". Of course we don't have any DNS records for that name so IE seems to fall back to using NBNS. We only have one central NBNS server, so this
will cause the delay our remote users noticed (it takes them about five seconds for one request to be handled).
As a workaround we've adjusted our proxy.pac to save the resolved IP of the host to a variable, therefore reducing our name resolution queries from previously 35 to a single one. This doesn't get rid of the hang completely but it helps a lot in that
the delay is now more like five seconds than two minutes.
I'm now trying to figure out why IE is querying "DUMMY<00>" in the first place but so far I'm out of ideas. Does anyone have some insight as to why that's happening? Is it a certain setting we need to adjust or is this by design? We've never
noticed anything similar with IE 9.

Hi,
Untill now, based on my research, the only way to bypass this error is just workaround method, there is no fixed method to resolve the problem. You can try to use these two method as workaround method:
1. Add to the proxy pac file:
                function FindProxyForURL(url, host)
                // Workaround for IE11
                if (shExpMatch(url, "http://dummy/"))
                   return "DIRECT";
2. Add the “dummy” in the DNS or hosts files.

    The Ask Toolbar is causing that in the Firefox 3.6.13+ versions. Uninstall that extension.
    There are a couple of places to check for the Ask toolbar:
    * Check the Windows Control panel for the Ask Toolbar - http://about.ask.com/apn/toolbar/docs/default/faq/en/ff/index.html#na4
    * Also check your list of extensions, you may be able to uninstall it from there - https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Uninstalling+add-ons

    Mine appear in gray, too; I think that's just the style.
    Does this problem occur on all pages? (If it only appears on YouTube or other pages with Flash players, it may be related to keystrokes being captured by the plugin.)
    A standard diagnostic for possible interference by add-ons is to try Firefox's Safe Mode.
    First, I recommend backing up your Firefox settings in case something goes wrong. See [[Backing up your information]]. (You can copy your entire Firefox profile folder somewhere outside of the Mozilla folder.)
    Next, restart Firefox in Firefox's Safe Mode ([[Safe Mode]]) using
    Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
    In the Safe Mode dialog, do not check any boxes, just click "Continue in Safe Mode."
    If your keyboard shortcuts work correctly, this points to one of your add-ons or custom settings as the problem.
    Any change?

  • When accessing favorites imported from IE8, duplicate links appear for those bookmarks on Google new tab page, while things I have bookmarked in Firefox appear normally, as a single link.

    For several months now, I have had this issue. I'm not sure if this is an issue with Google Toolbar or Firefox, but I have uninstalled and re-installed the toolbar several times, and the same thing keeps happening when I access anything Imported from IE8. Anything I originally bookmark in Firefox appears as a single link on the Google new tab page, while my favorites from IE8 appears twice. Everything appears as normal in the Firefox Bookmarks menu. This doesn't seem to affect functionality in any way, but it is rather irritating at times. Is it possible it could be a bug in IE8? I'm curious to see if anyone knows of a solution to this issue. Any help or input is greatly appreciated. Has anyone else had this happen? I have the latest versions of Google Toolbar and Firefox, so far as I'm aware. Thanks, once again, for your time and input.

    Thanks to jscher! With some help from AVG my AVG & Google browser panels now work OK. But I've taken the advice & disabled several extensions including the Disconnect. The browsers are still OK after re-launching them so I keep fingers crossed.
    My original problem was that I had suddenly found a small popup window appearing, over the browser window, that I couldn't get rid of. It contained an advisory to the effect that Windows couldn't find the file popuptransparent[dot]xul. I tried searching for that to see what it was and in the course of doing that I seem to have executed it. Then was when the trouble started.
    I have 3 instances of that file in my computer and would dearly like to get rid of them if they are of no use to me. Any advice there?

    Hi Bob,
    I have question that I hope you can answer. I am trying to decide how to set up my wireless network with a 4th generation Airport Time Capsule (802.11n) with a 5th generation Airport Extreme (802.11n). I have read that you can extend your wireless network, but I am unsure which device I should have connected to the modem, etc., or what setup is the best way to utilize these devices. I want to setup my wireless network and get the most out of each device while making it so that internet connection is "excellent" throughout the house. In addition, I also want to be able to use Time Capsule or Airport Etreme to back up with Time Machine. Basically, I don't understand what it is that I have and how to use it in the best way.
    Any help with this matter would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Michael

  • When I search for something, firefox opens a new tab with the results. How can I change the settings to where it will all stay in the same tab?

    When I search something Firefox automatically opens a new tab with the results of this search. How do I change the settings to where the results will appear in the same tab as where I conducted the search?

    Whether to open search results in new window most often is a setting of the search engine you are using.

  • How do I edit the default page for when I open a new tab?

    I'd like to know how to set which page appears when I open a new tab. I've already set my home page to what I'd like, but I'm having trouble setting which page appears once I open new tabs while I'm already online.

    You can do that by using an add-on such as:
    * NewTabURL - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/newtaburl
    * New Tab Homepage - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/new-tab-homepage
    Another way of opening the home page in a new tab is to middle click on the home button in the navigation toolbar.

  • Newbie: trying to add a template chart series to a new tab

    I have this idea where I want to get a time series when the user clicks a button and then create a chart and add it to a new tab. Should be simple enough.
    I have my simple chart below that I want to chart.
    Do I
    1) try to do something with templating, i am reading some code about UIComponent etc, not really understabnding it
    2) write some manual code that does all the same stuff as the MXML below, and then automatically adds this as a child to a tab object
    3) something else entirely.
                <mx:Canvas label="Tab 1" width="100%" height="100%">
                <mx:Panel title="TimeSeries Chart"
                    height="491" width="589" layout="horizontal" x="10" y="5">
                    <mx:LineChart id="linechart" height="100%" width="100%"
                        paddingLeft="5" paddingRight="5"
                        showDataTips="true" dataProvider="{tsRPC.lastResult.DataPoint}">
                    <mx:horizontalAxis>
                        <mx:CategoryAxis id="ca" categoryField="@Date" title="Date" />
                    </mx:horizontalAxis>
                        <mx:series>
                            <mx:LineSeries yField="@Value" form="curve" displayName="bps" lineStroke="{s1}"/>
                        </mx:series>
                    </mx:LineChart>
                    <mx:Legend dataProvider="{linechart}"/>
                </mx:Panel>
                <mx:TextArea x="631" y="10" id="textarea" width="257" height="471" backgroundColor="#7D1E71"/>
            </mx:Canvas>

    Just bumping this question to see if anyone had any ideas.
    I would have thought there would be some standard way of doing this but found the docs rather slack in this area.

  • How do I set the default for when I open a new tab? It keeps opening to see strange search window.

    The answer that came up only applies to Windows - I am using a Mac.

    You can check the browser.newtab.url pref on the <b>about:config</b> page.
    You can open the <b>about:config</b> page via the location/address bar.
    You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/about:config
    See this article about the New Tab page (about:newtab):
    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/new-tab-page-show-hide-and-customize-top-sites
    You can use the SearchReset extension to reset some preferences to the default values.
    *https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/searchreset/
    Note that the SearchReset extension only runs once and then uninstalls automatically, so it won't show on the "Firefox > Add-ons" page (about:addons).

  • Are Wildcards possible for host name in "no proxy for" setting?

    Our LAN requires a proxy for internet access. I need to bypass proxy for certain host names, as the proxy blocks many ports.
    Things work if I enter the entire host name. But there are many, so I wish to use wildcards in the host name.
    That does not seem to work.

    There is no solution for host names and wild cards as far as I know. That is why I showed how to do this with the IP.
    Does it work if you only specify the top level domain if you want to include other domains with the same postfix?

  • How do I get the tabs to start working after updating Firefox? It wont open new tabs for me now.

    I downloaded the recent update for Firefox and now the new tabs will not work, either by clicking on the "+" symbol or by going to file create a new tab. Ive tried rebooting firefox and have had no luck. Any one else having this issue and know how to fix it?

    If it works in Safe Mode and in normal mode with all extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) disabled then try to find which extension is causing it by enabling one extension at a time until the problem reappears.
    Close and restart Firefox after each change via "Firefox > Exit" (Windows: Firefox/File > Exit; Mac: Firefox > Quit Firefox; Linux: Firefox/File > Quit)
