No, it won't. If an update in that Application is available, the App will automatically update, without yourself going to the App Store and updating it manually.
Bought Applications will be updated too without charge, however, in-app purchases might change due to the update.
But to answer your question, it does not cost to select the automatic update option.

How do I get a prompt for my new account when updating existing apps? I had used one of my sons account for most of the apps on my iPhone. I have since move up to a iPhone 4S and created my own account to use iCloud. But everytime I try to update the exiting apps I am prompted for a password to my sons account. I am logged on to iCloud with my new account at the same time.
It looks like the apps retain some kind of tag to the original account used during download.
Any help would be appreciated.

Problem after Update, mosts apps will not run

After running some Apple updates this weekend, many applications on my machine no longer work. Everything ran fine before the updates. I have not installed any other new software or hardware for months.
Any one know what's going on?
The following apps do not work ... I click on them, they bounce, then I get a submit error
Firefox
Safari
iPhoto (this gets to the point of showing photos)
iTunes
The following applications do work
Mail
Terminal
System Preferences
MS Word
I have tried creating a new account and running the apps, and that does not work (in the new account, the menu bar keeps disappearing and reappearing implying the Finder keeps crashing.

if you are having system wide issues archive and install would be the best bet. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120 first however, you must do disk repair http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214. hopefully you do not have severe directory damage. if disk utility finds errors it cannot fix, back up your info immediately. you can use a third party app like diskwarrior or techtool pro to attempt fixing the problem, and if it can't be fixed, you will have to erase and install your operating system. After having updated my iPad with the latest OS update no apps will work.

Try downloading any free app. That seems to sometimes reset something. If you don't want the app you can delete it.

YO can just delete all media purchased with the account and change the ID to a new one. and not lose things like photos except for photos directly associated with the ID like maybe photos in your PhotoStream

App will not open after update from market.

I have an android app that when I publish an update and the user downloads the update the app will not open. It opens for a second and then closes.
This happens even if I do not change anything in the update.
The only thing I can find is that after downloading the update I clear the cache and it works fine. My question is does anyone know why this might happen. Also is there a way to clear the cache at time of update.

ok i created a hello world app to try a nail down this issue.
i created the app with version 1.0.0
uploaded it to my server on the net.
hit the web address from my phone, downloaded and installed
then changed the version number to 1.0.1
uploaded this apk
downloaded and installed to phone
app would then open for sec then close
only fixable by clearing application cache.
I can't believe the answer to this problem is not available by googling it.
has no one else encountered this?

You can re-download apps for free : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519 . If you download them to your computer's iTunes you could then try restoring to your iTunes backup and see if the apps and their old content/settings get copied over.

I recently updated iTunes to 11.1 and then I updated my iPhone 5 to the new iOS 7.0.2 and I am having some major problems with my Apps. Some crash right after opening them, such as Shazam and Instagram. So I deleted them and tried to reload them. That is when I found out the Apps would not reload. I tried to reload them using the App Store App, I would click on the little icloud icon and I would only get a turning circle that would just keep turning and never reload the apps. Same thing happens when I tried downloading a totally new app, I would click on install and the same turning circle would appear. And when I try to update my apps the same thing happens. Does anyone else have this problem? Do you have any suggestions on how to fix it? Thanks for your help.
Also, my texts are not going through. I just read that this a top 5 problem with the new OS and apple is working on it. Anyone know how that is going?

For the 2nd day my iPhone 5 will not let me download updates for apps. When i click update, it acts as if it is going to update but puts all apps in "waiting" status. I've tried selecting each, as well as deleting and re-downloading but to no avail.

Oh my gosh I had the EXACT same problem, and for ages I couldn't figure out how to fix it until today. Here's what I did:
First I went onto my computer, opened itunes, and un-installed tumblr, vine and kik. These were the apps I was having problems with (it said I had them on my phone but, like you, they didn't show).
Then I went to the itunes store, searched for each one, and it said I could update them so I did (just FYI: for tumblr a window popped up saying "please click ok to confirm you are 17 years or older", so I did that also)
When I went back to my phone and tried installing them again (still on my computer), it worked!

Help! Since updating my phone to iOS 6.0.1, my email app will not open, my email/contacts/calendar settings will not open, my touchscreen is unresponsive, my battery is draining in two hours time, and my delete button only works one letter at a time (can't hold down to delete easily). I've done a soft reset and I've restored twice to no avail. This is a MAJOR problem! I'm not wanting to pay for the apple care since this may result in upgrading to the iPhone 5 (last option) and the closest apple store is an hour and a half from me.

This seems to be a common problem.
I am suffering too!
It would seem to be very shoddy from apple to allow such problems.
Not the first issue since upgrade to iOS 6.....think home button problems.

Try deleting the old backup.
Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>Manage Storage, tap the device name and on the resulting screen, scroll down and tap on Delete Backup.
