For instance if you have $2800 invested in a machine, that's $700 a year and it's 3 years old, that means it's likely to have only $700 of value left, so it makes little sense to spend a lot to get that remaining $700. Sell it for parts and apply the funds to a new machine.
I suspect you upgraded a older machine to 10.7 and it likely killed it.
