If you don't like MISSION CONTROL, here's my FREE fix.

I stumbled on some free software called ISOLATOR.  It isolates every open program by itsellf, essentially placing each open app you have alone in a 'space'.  It's so simple and elegant it's almost impossible to describe.
http://willmore.eu/software/isolator/
The app is a touch buggy since it's not Lion-lovely yet, and so if you get a bunch of crazy blinking just click on the menu bar icon and it stops.  Hopefully the developer will fix this soon enough.
I know there are people who love FULL SCREEN apps.  I don't.  Nearly full screen offers me the menubar and dock.  If FULL SCREEN is to avoid distractions of other apps, ISOLATOR already hides them for you.  If it's your desktop picture that's distractiing, consider changing it.  If it's the icons on your desktop driving you nutty, use ISOLATORS fade features, although here --
-- I recommend buying CAMOUFLAGE for $2 at the Mac App Store, which makes all desktop icons vaporize via another menubar icon.
Try it, MChaters.  You'll like it.

See, there you go. Exercising your rights as a consumer.
I cannot believe that any of these suits will actually see a court room. That's just silly. How many Samsung, Motorola, or other phones have been faulty? People just stop buying them, with no law suit discussed. Why should Apple be held LEGALLY to a different standard? Too many people have drank way too much of the Apple Kool-Aid and now feel they have some kind of special right to fault free device.

  • Office apps don't like mission control

When Spaces first came out in OS X Leopard, I liked it a ton...  It allowed me to organize work and have certain apps launch in certain spaces...  Except there was one big problem...  When you would first open Excel, Word or any Office app, it would open in the Space you had reserved for it (so far, so good) but with that app now open (say, for example, Excel), if you would be in some other space and open yet a second Excel document, that second doc would now open in whatever space you happen to be in at the moment...  That was a flaw...  I was never sure whether it was an Apple bug or one tied to Microsoft/Office...  But eventually it got fixed...  In some later version of Leopard or maybe when we got to Snow Leopard (I just don't recall), it got fixed by someone and I was happy...
Now, it's back...  Bummer...  Let's say you reserve Desktop 4 for Excel (that's what I do)... Say you're in Desktop 1 when you first launch Excel...  The system switches to Desktop 4 as it should...  Now, say you're back in Desktop 1 and you now launch a second Excel document...  Unlike the flaw there used to be in Leopard (where it just stayed in whatever Space it was at the moment), if you watch you will now see the window quickly swing to Desktop 4 (where it should now stop) but then immediately it swings back to Desktop 1 and the document errantly opens there...
It's like we just took one step backward...  I do a lot of work where I open lots of Excel documents from different Spaces (or now Desktops) and I like them all to end up in one place...  The old problem existed so long that I had even gotten used to manually switching to the Space I wanted for Excel before opening subsequent documents.  This way I could force all my Excel docs to open in one place...  I was so happy when it got fixed but unfortunately now it's broken again...  I will tell Apple...  I will tell Microsoft...  Then I will wait a year and hope...  Just a heads up to any who care about how the new Mission Control works...

No, I just tried precisely what you suggested...  I have Excel open already and a document sitting in Desktop 4.  I held down the Excel icon in the dock while sitting in Desktop 4, clicked on Options and chose (it was already checked by the way), "Assign to this desktop"...  I then moved over to Desktop 1 and from there I requested some second Excel document to open...  As it opened the desktop switches to Desktop 4 quickly (good so far) but then within a fraction of a second it switches back to Desktop 1 and the document opens in Desktop 1... That's wrong...  I want ALL Excel documents to open in Desktop 4...  Not just the first one... When this was broken back in OS X Leopard, I got used to first switching to Space 4 and then opening subsequent Excel documents...  That would force the documents to open in the Space I want.  Now, I will have to start doing that again...  bummer...

  • If you don't like the 3D Dock

If you don't like the 3D Dock you can change it:
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=2007101815375480
Someone has posted applescripts to easily change it.
I prefer the flat dock mainly because I found it hard to see the little dots indicating open apps - especially on the default apple picture as some of the stars look like the dots.

    BTW...
You can also access the Dock's preferences by Control-clicking on the Dock space between the Apps and the Trash. (The lines that look like highway dividers). You can also toggle the magnification, screen location, etc. settings as well as left-click-dragging to set the size of your Dock. You never really have to open the System Preferences.

  • HT204266 If you don't like an app can you get a refund?

    Refund for crappy apps.

There are no refunds if you just don't like the app, no. If it doesn't do what the developer promised - an advertised feature is missing or the app is unreliable to the point where it's nonfunctional -  then a refund might be possible. But if the app just didn't turn out to work like you'd hoped, then no, you would not qualify for a refund.

  • How do I disable Mission Control in favor of old Spaces and Exposé?

Spaces was my favorite feature from previous versions and now they upgraded (killed) it. I loved having a Space for each kind of activity, like browsing or email or system-related tasks, and so on. Now it’s all confusing and I still don’t know how to assign apps to a space. I don’t like either that you have to go over all of them to get to a specific one and there’s no easy way of recalling where -recently unassigned opened- your app was, you have to go thru Mission Control. It’s irritating.
I know you can go directly to a Space by using ^+the number or the space, but I liked way more the grid in which they were set up before.
The window management system OS X is one of the major things I choose this OS over all the other but now it's getting screwed up. It seems like an OS for iOS to Mac OS switchers. Is there some file or setting I have to edit like in Terminal? An app to buy? Anything.
    I really appreciate your help.
UPDATE: I just learned how to assign applications to a space, from the application's dock menu, yet the fact that spaces are not fixed and you can easily close them by just clicking the X that on it, keeps me a little too uneasy.

Some people hate it, some like it.

At least now we can have up to 16 spaces.
    Work in multiple spaces
When projects pile up and your desktop becomes cluttered, you can use Spaces to organize your windows into groups. For example, create a space for work, another for games, and a third for chatting and checking email messages.
    Add one or more spaces
Enter Mission Control using one of these methods:
From a trackpad, swipe up using three or four fingers.
From the keyboard, press the Mission Control key. If your keyboard doesn’t have a Mission Control key, press F9 (Fn-F9 on portable keyboards).
Move the pointer toward the upper-right corner of your screen.
To add a space, click the Add button (+). You can add up to 16 spaces.
To leave Mission Control, swipe again, or press the key you used to enter Mission Control.
HideMove from one space to another
    Do any of these:
Swipe left or right with three fingers to scroll through your spaces.
Enter Mission Control, and then click the space you want to use.
Press the Control key and the number key for the space you want. For example, press Control-3 to go to Desktop 3.
Press the Control key and an arrow key to scroll through the spaces.
HideMove a window from one space to another
    Do any of these:
Drag the window to the edge of your screen and pause; after a moment, the window is switched to the next space.
Move the pointer over the window, and hold down the mouse button while pressing the Control key and an arrow or number key.
From the space that has the window you want to move, enter Mission Control. Then drag the window itself (not the thumbnail image) up to the space you want to use.
HideDecide which spaces to use with particular applications
If you work in multiple spaces, you can assign applications to particular spaces.
Press and hold an application’s icon in the Dock. You may have to first open the application from Launchpad to see its icon in the Dock.
From the shortcut menu that appears over the icon, choose one of these:
To have the application open only in the current space, choose Options > This Desktop. From now on the application will open in the current space; if you are working in a different space, the application’s space scrolls into view.
To have the application open in every space, choose Options > All Desktops. From now on, when the application is open it will appear in every space.
To have the application open in the whichever space you are currently using, choose Options > None.
In Mission Control preferences, you can specify that when switching to an application, your desktop should scroll to a space with open windows for that application.
    Delete a space
Enter Mission Control using one of these methods:
From a trackpad, swipe up using three or four fingers.
From the keyboard, press the Mission Control key. If your keyboard doesn’t have a Mission Control key, press F9 (Fn-F9 on portable keyboards).
Move the pointer over the the space you want to delete. After a moment a delete button (x) appears on the space.
Click the delete button (x) to remove the space. If the space contains windows, the windows are moved to another space.

  • How can I build this cluster? I don't like the one I have created (too big)

Hi everybody, I'm working with a Vision VI and the trouble is that I need to create a cluster to connect it to a terminal called Settings of the Vision VI (IMAQ Count objects). These settings includes booleans, long and unsigned word type values. I've seen this one in a pdf document:
I like how it looks because it's in a reduced space.
This is the one I've created:
(Please ignore the red numbers 1 and 2)
And the block diagram looks like this:
If someone knows how make a VI as the first image, please post it.
Thank you so much for your answers and comments.
P.S. I use LabView 2009, maybe some features are not availables in newers versions.
    Impossible is nothing
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

You did not create a cluster, just some individual controls that you are bundling in the code. that's not the same!
I would recommend a combination approach from what we heard so far.
First, create a control on the subVI input. Now we know it has the correct type.
Right-click each control you don't like and replace it with one from a different palette (modern, classic, system), making sure you keep the same datatype. Keep the wire connected to the subVI. If the wire breaks, you picked a wrong datatype. simply undo and try again. (This way, the cluster order should not change).
Now rearrange the controls the way you want.
Here's are two quick examples I just made from scratch.

  • App in limbo in Mission Control

    I am using 10.9.5 on a MacBook Air iCore5, 8GB Ram.
I have a small app that displays a token ID for VPN connection. I don't use Mission Control, but in trying to find where it went, it appears in their. If I try to drag to a desktop, it drops... but then doesn't display on that desktop... only in Mission Control view. It feels like it's in limbo. I've trying multiple reboots to no avail. See screen cap below.
    Help Please

On modern MBairs, the F3 key will take you to Mission control.  Once there, hold the Option key down and you'll see  a tab with the "+" sign on it.  Pressing this will add another desktop.  You can assign apps to desktops or just drag them there.   Switching between desktops is done by swiping either 3 or 4 fingers across the trackpad. (depend on the option chosen in System Preferences > Trackpad).

  • Customize Mission Control vs. Expose

In expose I used to be able to customize the corners and gestures that I could use to get to the desktop or see all windows. How do I do the same in mission control?
What I wan to do is have three finger downward swipe show all windows and three fingers upward swipe show the desktop. But it seems the gestures are locked?
How can this be that Lion is less customizable than Snow Leopard?

I'm no expert on Lion but here's the behavior I see with Mission Control that makes it really different from Expose. With Mission Control, if you don't assign an application to a workspace then when you enter Mission Control you see all the spaces along the top and all the applications below. If a application has more than one open window, its windows are stacked together and you can look at the windows stacked below by click dragging. Click and you select that window and leave Mission Control. Click drag and the window comes to the front so you can see it better but you'll stay in Mission Control.
The limitation (if you want to call it that) is that if you have assigned an application to a specific workspace, if you didn't enter from that workspace, you don't see it or its windows in MC (unless you move to its workspace). This has led me to assign far fewer programs to specific windows than I used to. So, for example, since I assigned my word processing programs to space 2, if I enter MC from space 3 I won't see my Pages documents.  Even so, I can use a gesure or or control arrow to move to Space to and move one of my Pages documents into another window. (I chose to park my writing applications in a space because they are apps they I most often want to move windows to rather than move their windows to another space.)
This limitation has also led me to temporarily park programs in a space but then unpark them when I've completed a project. In Leopard and Snow Leopard I had lots of programs permanently parked. MC is a different animal that needs a slightly different way of working but for me it has changed my workflow without damaging it.
    Does this help?

  • Screen jumping in Mission Control after wake

I have a mid 2012 Macbook Air running Lion. It's a fantastic machine and I'm enjoying using it very much. One small issue that I've noticed occurs over half of the time after I wake it from sleep, either by opening the clamshell or hitting the keyboard/mouse click. I usually have two desktops and a few full-screen apps open in mission control, and what happens is immediately after wake the screen switches from whatever desktop or app I was using to some other desktop or app, as if I'd swiped the trackpad left/right with three fingers. This is kinda frustrating because the app that I was last using is usually the app I want to use when the computer wakes up again and so I have to go into Mission Control and navigate back to it.
I've searched google and various support forums using keywords like "Mission Control wake switching problem", but have come up short. I can't be the only one experiencing this, can I?
The only other factor that might be relevant is that I migrated all the data from my 2008 Macbook running Snow Leopard to this Macbook Air running Lion. Maybe some of my Exposée/Spaces preferences are interfering invisibly with Lion's Mission Control? I think thats how I've still got double-tap-and-hold to drag enabled, which I am very happy about.
Thanks for any attention or help you can offer.

I googled so many iterations of terminology for the issue for so long before coming across this. I have an 11" air on ML and have this issue. I didn't notice the issue under lion, but it has been there since I upgraded to ML and persisted through all updates. I just did the 2nd air update to bringing my system to OS X 10.8.2 (12C3006).
After I put it to sleep, it's set to wait 5 minutes before requiring password.
Sometimes it's hard to reproduce at will, but it seems to occur after the Macbook has been asleep for at least 15 or 20 seconds and will happen until some indeterminate time thereafter (or in my case 5 minutes max, but still not always that long, and never after requiring pass).
My screen either shifts back to the main desktop or one fullscreen app/desktop to the left (no discernible pattern on that one).
Nothing shows up in console as this occurs that seems related.
I had some other complaints about airplaying video and general graphics performance (my late 08/2009 13" macbook performs subjectively better despite being objectively  only 50-75% as fast), so after doing everything conceivable to troubleshoot the issue (including multiple re-formats and re-installs), I took it in.
Since this was the only thing I could readily reproduce that was outright wrong (they wouldn't even look at airplay and dismissed UI stutter), everything was based on this. We couldn't reproduce it on the others in store after setting them up identically, so they said they'd take it to check further. Initially they did nothing but a diagnostic and tried to give it back to me (I had to wait three days with no contact for that!). The girl claimed they had made some sort of software change, but after I got it home, it was readily apparent that they'd done nothing. I brought it back in that same evening (somewhat irked at that point), and they took it back promising they'd send it off to the next tier or whatever and make sure I was in the loop along the way. After several more days with no contact they tell me it's ready. This time they say they've changed the logic board (which I'm inclined to believe they did since I got an email saying my account had been logged into by a 13 inch air right after I reinstalled and put in iCloud info — are the mobos the same size between the two?) They did that and gave it back to me, rattled off some bs about it "probably being within specification" (aka "we don't know; please go away"), and sent me on my way.
Yet again I was able to reproduce, so I reformatted again. Issue seemed to be gone, but I just noticed it back again. Initially I thought I had traded issues. After the replacement my screen stays black for 15-20 seconds after trying to wake before giving pass screen (only after it's been asleep long enough to enter standby).
So after all of that, unless there's an issue with the SSD, this would seem to be purely a software bug, and one specifically with ML at that. I don't believe there's third party influence because I've been able to reproduce on almost completely clean installs of ML. I'm pretty sure I've done it on completely clean, but I know for a fact I've reproduced it with only Chrome and Pages installed. The only other thing that could be of influence is that I synced iCloud stuff, but when I took it to Apple store we created a new user and were able to reproduce there.
This bug is particularly irksome because I shut my macbook any time I think I'll be leaving it alone (for battery), but am somewhat inclined to open it again for something right as the window starts for this to happen (but not long after unless I'm going to wait more than 5 minutes, which is why I'm not sure how long the window is).
So I know a lot of this is ranting, and ultimately doesn't really help, but I didn't just want to say "me too."

  • After installing Lion os I cannot see my desktop 1 nor can I see my open windows when I go to finder, I just get the grey/black background that comes with mission control. Any ideas as to how to solve this problem?

The top picture is what my Desktop 1 looks like. And the picture below is what my desktop looks like after clicking mission control. Ive tried changing wallpapers, changing preferences, etc. and I still can't figure out what's wrong. As you can see, on mission control you can't see any of the open windows, or anything that I have placed on my desktop. Any ideas as to how to solve this issue?

Hello cor-el, thanks for your reply. I changed my settings for downloads to desktop and it has appeared on there. When I double click I am asked which program I want to open file. I click firefox and another box "opening install" says I have chosen to open the file which is an application and do I want to save it. This is the only real option so I press save file. I get a box saying this is an executable file which may contain viruses - do you want to run. I press ok and the final box showing C drive file name and desktop appears stating application not found.
This happens the same whenever I try to install.
To my untrained eye the application is not being recognised as an application and I cannot work out how to get it to do that.
My plugin is still showing as out of date.
Is there anything you could suggest. Thanks for your time.

  • Sony, please tell me how you allow something like this to happen? Horrific Support Experience

So, the below happened.  Essentialy, Sony sent me four broken TVs, forced me to spend about 20 hours of time replacing those TVs, and has refused to replace my broken television.  The below is a chain with one of your reps.  I would never have expected such a poor customer service experience from a company of Sony's caliber.  It has been very disappointing.  You insist that you are giving me an "offer" but you have given me no options whatsoever.
I note that you continue to maintain that there is no viable replacement.  However, a simple search on your webpage and online shows that there are multiple 48 inch LED televisions still available.  I find your representation to be disengenuous.  The below chain is only one point in the long line of frustrating communications with your representatives.  All told me different things and made promises that were not kept.  I can only imagine how my case file looks.
I would like an explanation from Sony how you could allow something like this to happen?  This has been the most frustrating experience I have ever had with a electronics company -- and I have had alot.  It has been terrible.

Thank you for contacting Sony and for accepting the offer. We apologize that we cannot offer you the regular retail price of the unit since that is not the amount that you paid it for. We will email you a prepaid shipping label which you can use to ship us back your TV and once we determined that it is in transit back to us we will process the check with the amount of $369.99 and you will receive the check in 4-6 weeks. How you get away with treating your customers like this is beyond me.  I am telling you that I purchased the television at a discounted rate that I am no longer able to obtain.  In other words, the amount you are refunding me will not make me whole.  I am also telling you that your colleague literally offered me a refurbished TV about two hours ago (apparently your group offers less to customers now).  You have already sent me three TVs and wasted about 20 hours of my time.  Despite all that, you unapologetically state that your "FINAL" offer gets me to nowhere that I need to be.  You have no remorse for the situation and have not gone any extra distance to make a customer whole, which is all that I am asking for.
You have beaten me into submission over the past month with broken TVs, hours wasted shipping, long conversations with support representatives, and failed promises.  You guys go ahead and do whatever it is you need to do.  There is only so much that I can argue about.  No customer should expect this type of treatment from a company like Sony.  People purchase Sony so that they DONT have to deal with that type of nonsense.  This has honestly been the worst customer service interaction I have ever had.

The $319.99 is the amount that you paid for the TV and that is what we are going to refund you and the $50 is for compensation. Mark,
I just spoke to an individual on the phone who told me that you could send a refurbished model .  That conversation is exactly what prompted my email to this email address -- they told me to reach out here because you could provide me a better option rather than the two that were given.  Now you are telling me that not only can you not offer me a better option but that you are taking away an option previously given.  This is getting more and more ridiculous.  I am sorry but this just isnt working for me.  I dont understand how there is this much miscommunication between your departments.
I would like to be put in touch with a manager on this case.  Your offer to refund me 320 + 50 will not cut it.  I am amazed that a company like Sony, which people purchase because of the supposed product support and service, is failing their customer in this way.  It's very disappointing.

Thanks, Mark.  My preference would then be to try a refurbished model one more time.  The issue is that I got the TV at Black Friday discount.  I wouldnt be able to replace it even if I wanted to.  So, I will try one more time and go from there.  Please let me know once the TV is shipped.

    Hi [].
Thank you for contacting Sony. We apologize if you don’t want that option but this is the best Sony can offer since there is no same or comparable model to offer you anymore. If the unit will be replaced it will be the 4th time already and to tell you honestly it will be much cheaper for you to just buyback the unit rather than to pay the shipper deliver the TV every time we replace it and we are not saying that it is your fault just to make it clear. We will buyback the unit for $319.99 and we will add up another $50 as compensation for all the troubles. Please let us know once you have made your decision. Thank you.

I don't want that option.  I would take a refurbished model again over the refund.
You are saying that I spend 20 hours of my life dealing with you, driving to and from fed ex three times, mounting and taking down three broken televisions, and you do nothing to compensate me for my time?  I would never expect this from a company like Sony.

    Hi [],
Thank you for contacting Sony. As we have mentioned there is no same or comparable model to offer you that is why we offered a buyback for the unit and that is the only option thank you.

As I said, I don't want a buy back. That is not an option for me.
Are you saying that you have no other 48inch led television?

    Hi [],
Thank you for contacting Sony. We apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused you. Since there is no same or comparable model to send you as a replacement we will buyback the Tv for $319.99. We will email you a prepaid shipping label for you to return the unit back to us and once we determine that the unit is in transit we will process the check and you will receive it in 4-6 weeks. Should you take the offer please provide the address where the check should be sent to. Thank you.

Over the past month, you have sent me four defective TVs.  I cannot tell you how frustrating this process has been for me.  I never would have thought that a company like Sony could be this bad.  It has been like pulling teeth with you all.
I purchased my television thinking that it would come along with the best product and support in the market.  That has not been the case.  My TV broke down within a year and now you have sent literally four televisions to replace it but none of them have worked.
The latest contact I got was that you have run out of new television for my model and instead need to send me another refurbished one or refund me.  I do not want either option.
I want a brand new TV.  I dont care if it's the same one or a better one but it has to be new.  It cannot be refurbished.  I do not want a refund.
At this point, I have spent about 20 hours of my life on the phone with you or shipping back and forth items.  I would also like compensation to account for that time.
Please email me or call me with a response.
