Illustrator CS4 no longer previews fonts in Character palette after Yosemite upgrade

Howdy. Recently upgraded to Yosemite. In my copy of Adobe CS4, fonts no longer preview in the dropdown menu of the Character palette, unless the mouse rolls over them. Very frustrating. Does this occur with any other version of Illustrator? Any way I can fix this?

What ahppens if you open System Preferences and go to Accessibility. Next, select Display from the source list along the left, then check the box labelled “Reduce transparency.”?

You may wish to roll back from Yosemite and wait to see whether the issues will be solved and reported as such.
Weeding out in older plugins seems to have helped some in some cases. It also seems that JAVA Runtime may be involved, for some it seems to help to roll back to an ealier version, for others to update to the newest.
All the above is more or less hearsay so far, with no definite final confirmation.
In any case, there is something to be sorted out by someone. Yosemite was made long after CS4, so it may be difficult.

Illustrator CS4 not longer working in Windows 7 - reload no help

Hello> Hope someone here can help out. Just back from 3 weeks away and Illustrator CS4 no longer loads in our Windows 7 system. We have the Master Suite - Educational version and it just stopped loading. Tried reinstalling twice and it still doesn't load. Don't know what the problem is - other programs seem to be working. Do I unistall the whole suite and reinstall fromscratch?? Ideas??

I checked the Action Center and it only confirmed that this error occured - no solutions or reasons why it happened. I have uninstalled and re-installed the program with everything in the system shut down ie: all programs, virus scanners, firewall running in the background. I even ran the cleaner tool but the program won't launch. Not sure where to go from here.

Did you use migration with the new OS or did you reinstall the CS4 apps from the original media? If you didn't, then you should uninstall CS4 making sure to check the box to remove preferences, run the Cleaner tool (Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6) and then reinstall CS4. CS4 is totally untested and unsupported on the latest versions of Mac OSes.

I'm sorry...my question was imprecise. When I said 'no longer works' I was referring to plugging the device into the USB and power jacks in the center console and then being able to play music through the radio and control the device from either the radio or the steering wheel buttons. The iPhone 4 I use for this purpose has no cellular service and has never been paired with the car. I have an iPhone 5 with cellular service that is paired with the car. I cannot test theiPhone 5 with the car because of the difference of connectors on the phone. :-( The iPhone 4, however, works fine in my wife's Hyundai Santa Fe.

Illustrator CS4 Fails Display Font List In Yosomite, but displays Individual Font Family Names, I scroll down to about where I think it should be then check each font family till I find Correct one. As I am cutting back on work load in preparation for retirement, I have deleted my Font Manager rather than upgrading it to Yosomite and reverted to "Font Book".

Just discovered what appears to be the fix on another website. It was a fix for CF5 but it appears to work just fine for CS4 as we;
Open the Mac OS X System Preferences and head to ‘Accessibility.’ Once you are in there, select ‘Display’ from the left-hand list and then check the checkbox that says “Reduce transparency.”

I downloaded Yosemite on my Macbook Pro and now Illustrator will no longer work. A warning pops up that I need the newest Java runtime which I already have. What should I do? Please help

Imported text formatting disappearing when changing font in character palette.

Something seems to have changed with my InDesign, and I'm not sure why. Here is what I used to be able to do.
I could import a word doc into a text box. This text would have bold, regular, italics fonts. I would select the text box, then change the font using the character palette by just changing the top font box. For example, if the font imported in as Helvetica but I wanted it all to be Futura, I would select the box and then just type Futura and all of the Helvetica bolds would become Futura Bold, and the Helvetica Italic would become Futura Italic, etc. I didn't have to select each line.
Now if I try to do that same thing, when I select Futura, it just changes ALL the text to Futura Regular. I lose all previous formatting that was imported in from the word doc.
I hope this makes sense.
How can I go back to the way it was?
PLEASE HELP! This is maddening! Not a big deal for a single flyer design but when laying out a book, this could add DAYS to the project.

I believe the issue lies in the font palette. Here is what I used to do.
- New document.
- Create text box.
- Select text box.
- CMD + D
- Select word doc
- Text is imported with bolds, italics, etc.
At this point, let's say I want font to be Myriad Pro...but I want the bold to remain bold and italic to remain italic.
- Select text box.
- Type font name into font palette (No dropdown or popup menu used to appear, now it does). Used to just type Myriad Pro then hit return.
- Font in text would retain bolds and italics and become Myriad Pro. So if a line in the text imported as Helvetica Bold, it would now be Myriad Pro Bold.
Now when I do this, it just changed ALL of the text to ONE font. If I type in Myriad Pro, a drop-down menu appears and automatically selects Myriad Pro Condensed.
I hope that helps. I know I'm not crazy. This is what I have done forever. I use InDesign every day...and have for years. I rebooted my mac two days ago and this problem appeared. It seemed like some sort of awful update. haha. When I rebooted, I lost all of my preferences. InDesign went back to points and picas instead of inches. Smart guides appeared, I had to turn those off again. Stuff like that.
Any thoughts?

Illustrator CS3 crashes after Yosemite upgrade

I have just upgraded to Yosemite on my 2010 Mac book pro. Everything seems to be running ok, slightly slower but ok, the main issue I have is that Adobe Illustrator CS3 has stopped working. The rest of the Adobe creative suite works fine - Photoshop, Indesign etc but not illustrator. When I first launched the app after the upgrade I was asked to install a Java upgrade which I did, I then re-launched Illustrator, and it tried to update, but a message came up stating - could not connect to internet...no internet connection, the initialising window opened and looked like it was going to work but it froze and I had to force quit. Now it doesn't get passed the initialising window and just doesn't open. I have cleaned the font cache and I have started my Mac in safe mode, illustrator works in this mode, but when I start up again as normal it still doesn't work there. I have tried to find the preference file in users so I can delete it but I can't find this file and not really sure if this is what I need to do to get it working anyway! I have reinstalled the Java update but this has not helped. Sadly I don't have the installation discs so am unable to uninstall and then re-install the Adobe Suite. If anyone can give me help I would be very grateful! Just now I am very frustrated and wish I had never upgraded! Thanks in advance, and thanks for taking the time to read my post.

I also had problems with Adobe Illustrator CS3 and Yosemite. After the upgrade I installed Java for OS X 2014-001, as suggested by others. This seemed to work (sometimes) but when I opened Illustrator for the 2nd time it failed to open. Illustrator opened without crashing, but it did not show any menus, if I opened an .ai file the file did load and show on the screen, but I could not click on the window (unresponsive). Essentially this made Illustrator useless. I tried the following:
Re-installation
Install Java for OS X 2014-001
Cleaning font cache
Checking permissions
Installing other versions of Java (both JRE and JDK)
Nothing seemed to help. Until finally 15 minutes ago I found the solution by accident:
Open System Preferences > Java
Wait for the Java Control Panel to load
Open Adobe Illustrator (while keeping the Java Control Panel window open)
You can also make a launcher with AppleScript to automate the process:

Macbook pro will no longer boot from main sata bay after Yosemite

Hi!
I am really stuck as to why my macbook pro will no boot from the main Sata bay.
I have the macbook pro late 2011 - a few months ago I installed a samsung 840 evo, and moved the 500gb hdd into the optical bay and all has been working perfectly until last night.
I installed yosemite two days ago and it worked perfectly to begin with... then when I re opened my laptop everything was frozen. I restarted it and it wouldnt get past the grey screen. Then I managed to get it to the internet recovery stage....however it would not recognise the SSD, so I had to install Lion on the HDD.
After I logged on it gave me the message saying that the disc is not readable and on disk utility I can only see the "samsung ssd" but no details about it.
I thought that the SSD may have gone, but when i removed it and plugged it in via USB I was able to boot from it with no issues.
Does anyone know if this has anything to do with the new OS? or whether it is the Sata cable?

Hi, I have been having the exact same problem with a late 2011 MBP 15 inch. I replaced the hard drive with a samsung SSD 1.5 years ago, along with a samsung SSD in the optical drive. It worked great until the Yosemite upgrade. The MBP seemed to work reasonably well for a few days after the upgrade, but then it started stalling on various programs (spinning beach ball on Mail, Safari, etc). Start-ups were also longer and had a loading bar each time, which was new since the upgrade. I left the MBP to sleep last night and when opening it, it crashed and tried to restart. On restart it loads to the login screen, then after I enter the password it partially loads (based on the loading bar), then shuts off. I removed the SSD and plugged it in with a USG, but that didn't change anything. Here is a picture after using CMD-V before it shuts off.

About the slim fonts... this is actually a fix with qt4.5. Old qt didnt respect some system font settings so now that it does, tweak ~/.fonts.conf how you want it.
And about glitches... there will be some minor problems untill kdemod rebuilds against the new qt, you can rebuild workspace yourself if you dont want to wait for them.

Can't preview fonts on character panel in CS4

Running CS4 on a Macbook Pro. Have the font preview checkind in preference which allows me to preview the font in the font name but not in the words/characters I am typing? Any way to see the words I type in the available fonts?

I don't think you can get a line of type in the fonts menu, only font names in the respective fonts. If you type the lines of type in illustrator you can preview the type by duplicating the line of type several times, and changing the font used for each duplicate line. If you want you can do this off of the art board, in paste board space, to prevent clutter and confusion. I fine if I need to preview certain charectors in a font I will use a font utility like Suitcase which allows you to preview text you input in several selected fonts at a time.

Scrubbing with type-font size / Character palette?

I could be wrong but I thought you used to be able to scrub with a left-right movement in the character pallette (among others) - to change values for things, say, type/font size for example - but it appears in CS4 you can no longer do this?
What I mean is, I want to be able to rapidly change the size of a selected lettering without having to click the up/down arrows changing it one point at t a time - is there a better way to do this (besides manually typing in a new value/number)?
Hopefully that makes sense - works like that in Photoshop (used to in AI - or am i crazy?)

You are wrong, in AE, PPro, Encore, Flash, Soundbooth you have the dynamic sliders but not graphic programs only seem to be the motion graphic applications.
Not sure if they are as meaningful in the graphic program where the text will be static. That might be the reason such dynamics are not in those programs, where a more studied and precision requirement or standard might apply.
For instance is it practical to scrub and stop at 32.133 pts? and is it far more likely you want a specific point size? If you use paragraphs and paragraphs of text is this a feature that gets in the way or does it give you more freedom?
Not sure it is a good idea even if it can be done, I think they would have o give this out to a large number of users to test it.
I do not really mean something like a beta group of some kind but more a user group of a certain number for Photoshop, Illustrator and ID
but i think most might say it is not helpful after a while.
The answer to your direct question is no you are wrong it never existed.
