  • Why has itunes moved my music files out of the Music folder?

To my horror I just found out that itunes has moved folders (albums) out of the Music folder, Ive always found those folders very well organized (music, movies, podcasts, etc) now Im seeing some albums mixed with those folders (out of the music folder) and some albums IN the music folder as well, even worse I have the same folder inside Music and out!! with a few tracks on each, but in iTunes everything looks normal and it plays the album as usual, Im losing my mind over this I cant find a way to fix it, I even started moving them manually but there are too many, and for the duplicate folders I have to move the tracks that were moved. Any idea on why did this happen? I dont want to move the folders and lose hours only to find out that itunes did it again!! I thank you very very ver much in advance.

iTunes on a Mac may be more forgiving if you move things around manually, but it isn't really recommended.
Here are typical layouts for the iTunes folders:
If you have upgraded from version 8 (or earlier) to iTunes 9 (or later) at some point, then your media folder (everything inside the red outline) may still be called iTunes Music instead of iTunes Media. The extra Music folder inside the media folder is used if you had an older library and have allowed iTunes to Upgrade to iTunes Media Organization (iTunes 9) or used File > Library > Organize Library > Reorganize files in the folder "<Media Folder>" (iTunes 10/11). Depending on your choices for Keep iTunes Media folder organized and Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library plus a little bug in which one build changed the name of the file storing the choice of layout it is quite easy for some of your files to be organized according to one layout and some the other. (Recent installs of iTunes on a Mac now give the library file the .itl extension)
Assuming you're happy letting iTunes organize your files the following steps should tidy things up (should it be necessary):
    1. Select File > Library > Organize Library... > Tick Reorganize files in the folder "<Media Folder>" and click OK. Skip if this option is grayed out (already upgraded) or you prefer the older layout.
    2. Select File > Library > Organize Library... > Tick Consolidate files and click OK. This will bring any files currently organized outside the designated media folder into it.   N.B. This will create duplicate copies of any file that needs to be consolidated, and you will need to manually clean up afterwards.
    3. Select iTunes > Preferences > Advanced tab, uncheck Keep iTunes Media folder organized and click OK.
    4. Select iTunes > Preferences > Advanced tab, check Keep iTunes Media folder organized and click OK. This triggers iTunes into reorganizing everything according to your preferences.
    5. (Optional, if applicable) Close iTunes, rename the media folder iTunes Music as iTunes Media then restart iTunes. Check under iTunes > Preferences > Advanced tab that the location has automatically updated. If you can't access the media for any reason just undo the folder rename.
PS If you really prefer the older layout, but it is already in the new one then, edit the hidden file .iTunes Preferences.plist in your media folder and change the integer from 1 to 0 before doing step 3.
You should backup your library before attempting any major reorganization.
If iTunes is still creating files or folders in the wrong locations there is a possibility of permissions problems. Offhand I'm not sure of the correct OS X terms but on Windows both the system and user accounts should have full access permissions to all files & folders within the iTunes folder in order for it to work properly.

  • Locked songs after restoring music folder

I am running 10.3.9 with iTunes 7.0 on an iBook G4. The hard disk just died and needed to be replaced. Fortunately I had a back up drive, so I have been able to restore nearly all the data, but with one big problem. My daughter's iTunes music folder has over 2,000 songs in it and most were purchased from ITMS. On both the back-up hard disc and on the restored laptop all the songs that were purchased are "locked." If I go down to the individual file and open it (not from iTunes) it makes me log into the music store and "reauthorize" the song. I have already reauthorized the machine. The AppleCare folks said my only alternative was to do this one song at a time! There has to be a better way - any ideas? I've heard you can restore a library from the iPod in iTunes 7.0, but everything I've read indicates you need to do that by moving a music folder with the iPod basically serving as a back up disc. That won't work here because all the songs in the folder are already locked.

You posted on the iTunes for Mac forum and I'll request this be moved as sometimes the answers will vary on the different platforms.
Did you only copy music, or did you copy the whole iTunes folder (I hope very much you copied it all as it contains the library files that form the core of your collection management)?

  • I'm logged in as admin but am locked out of the main folder

I was attempting to change the permissions so I could access this computer from my laptop, an older mac running 10.4.9. This one is running 10.9, up to date. As admin, (and only user of this system) i should have access to everything, but suddenly i no longer have access to the main hard drive folder, where all my work is stored. The error message is that I do not have permission to see its contents. How can I change this back and get access to all my working files?

Nevermind, i just figured it out. I have to have everyone have full read & write access. But how do I make it so the admin only has write access then?

  • Can the path to the iTunes Music folder be locked?

I'm trying to simplify the results of my own occasional user error.
Can the path to the iTunes Music folder be locked?
I have my library stored on an external drive that I keep turned off when not in use. If I accidentally start iTunes with that drive off, it recreates the original iTunes Music folder and directs itself there.
Can that behavior be stopped? It seems like there should be a way for iTunes to send a pop up or something, rather than this automated over ride to manual settings.

Yeah, I know I don't have an end of the world scenario here.
But just remounting the drive doesn't do it. I have to go back into iTunes and reset the folder location. Then wait several minutes as it all reorganizes itself.
I know just leaving the drive on is the easiest answer. It causes too much of a domestic dispute about all the blinking boxes I have running all the time. I have convinced her that the green one on the AEBS has to be on if she wants internet.

  • Shouldn"t they have some sort of esearch warrant before they go in to my personal space and lock out my music??

I just downloaded 10.2.2 last night.  Before that I was having trouble with Itunes mixing up files - I'm pretty sure it happened when I downloaded new versions - it took me a while to notice something was wrong.  I would have duplicates of a lot of songs.  then I discovered they were not really duplicates - they were songs with some other name attached to it.  A techie advised me to turn off the library search in Options and that may have helped. I downloaded 10.2.2.  thinking it mighrt be better now but during installation part of the progress meter said something about scanning the library which made me go "Huh?" Now I find that large chunks of my library are simply not available to me to play, burn, or ??.  They are still listed in the library but I get a message that says  "...can't be located.."
The ones I can't acess are:  1)  an album that my daughter purchased on her computer.  I understand we can add each other to our accounts and that will help.  but 2)  I have a player that burns from vinyl or tapes to disc.  Some of those files - not all - are locked out, and 3)  an album I purchased online from a recording entity is locked out too.  I may have some bootleg files but they, and my old, out of copyright files, don;t seem to be affected.
What I tried:  re-opening the zip files I purchased in Windows Media and then importing them into itunes.  etc etc..  More back and forth stuff and I got them to actually play in itunes but when I tried to burn a cd for backup, they wouldn't burn - and now another song that I hadn't had trouble with before, wouldn't burn either.
I'm wondering what in the world kind of program writers are on this itunes thing.   It is squirrely beyond belief.  It appears that it might be some kind of misguided effort to police my music purchases.  I just hope I can somehow salvage my  LEGITIMATE music before the Igestapo takes it all away.

The ones I can't acess are:  1)  an album that my daughter purchased on her computer.  I understand we can add each other to our accounts and that will help.
Did you or your daughter copy that album to your computer from hers? If not, then it's not surprising you can't find it. You have to move tracks from computer to computer yourself.
    2)  I have a player that burns from vinyl or tapes to disc.  Some of those files - not all - are locked out
I have no idea what you mean by this. Can you please explain further?
an album I purchased online from a recording entity is locked out too.
From where did you purchase this album, what format it is, and what do you mean by "locked out"?
I can guarantee you that nothing sinister is going on. Apple hasn't reached into your computer and disabled anything. It's either a program error or, as seems to me more likely, a misunderstanding on your part about some issues and perhaps incompatibility between iTunes and the format of some other content you've acquired. If you'll please post back and provide more details, avoiding the unnecessary ranting and hyperbole, someone here can probably at least explain things it not help get them sorted.
    Regards.

  • Locked Music Folder/Disk/No Permission

My itunes recently froze and wouldn't respond to the Force Quit command. I logged everyone off of the computer, including myself, and logged back in. Itunes had been shut down during the log off. I tried to start it back up again to see what the problem had been only to receive an error saying that I either had a locked music folder, the folder was on a locked disk, or I didn't have permission to use the music folder. The whole program shuts down when you press the "Cancel" button (the only button available to press)
How on Earth do I fix this problem? I have no idea how anything was locked seeing as I didn't lock anything and the other users on the computer don't know how to lock a folder or disk. I don't know how I couldn't have permission since none of my admin powers have been changed since we first bought the computer and i've never run into this problem before.

  • APPLE: Please take videos OUT of music folder!!!!

Apple, you're killing me on space. I love that I can download videos but please let me store them in a folder OUTSIDE the music folder!!! I simply cannot store all the music and videos in one place.
I have 83 GBs of music in my music folder. I have a 160 GB external hard drive, 83 GB use for music, 34 GB for photos (in iPhoto)...bring it up to 117 for my 'current' iLife programs. I downloaded one 30 min episode of a program yesterday and that alone was 115 mb. Downloading a hour program would be 230 mb. If I downloaded the entire first season of Desperate Housewives, for example, 5.29 GB... Closing the game even tighter on my 160 GB hard drive!!
You simply MUST allow users to set a default folder for videos elsewhere and take it OUTSIDE the music folder!!

    Steve hello,
    You say
I don't quite understand why more people aren't sympathetic to what Christopher is saying.
When someone's understanding of what is happening and what is not is flawed, it is hard to make sense of it all... now do not get me wrong as I have no axe to grind but your own understanding is not quite right as well... I will explain...
Apple's current system of saving other media (in this case video) to the MUSIC folder makes storage difficult..
Think of another file, say an Appleworks document, you create it and you save it... where do you save it ?... the program will suggest somewhere based upon file type but you choose where it goes in the end...
The same basic principles are at work here in iTunes... you create it (rip) and you save it (location ?) the only change is you decide in advance where you want files stored by setting the location for newly added files in the preference settings...
the result is exactly the same as all other files on your computer...
and as I said earlier "when ripping or importing files a copy is automatically placed in the nominated location, you have no say in this...
if the nominated location folder is not available a copy will be placed in the home iTunes Music folder and if that is missing a new one will be created and they will be put there..
I fail to see where the perceived problem exists...
for example, If it worked the other way ... you set a music file to download and you are not available when it has finished downloading, where does the computer put the file ?
this should be looked upon as a 'god-send' as any files handled by iTunes will be saved with no further input from the user necessary... you have chosen where with two clicks, in advance.
A thought: whilst it may seem like a good idea to have a command setting in iTunes preferences that locates Music files in this folder and videos in another and movies in yet another one, let alone all the podcasts etc. and other things of the future... it will get very crowded and in a crowded place things can and do get confusing...let's hope they keep it simple... and user freindly
Finally Steve what do you mean by this statement ?
We cannot split our iTunes music Library between two drives (or partitions)..
Why not thousands of other do this all the time including me...
    take care Steve .... TP

  • We recently purchased 26 iPads for an elementary lab. THe Apple Configuration tool does not do enough to help us lock students out of the settings folder to keep them from making changes. Is help on the way, or is there a third party solution available?

If we do not find a viable solution quickly, our district is going to stop purchasing iPads. HELP!

Unfortunately there isn't a way to completely lock out Settings. Apple designed iPads to be personal devices where user is "King"…which makes it a pain for school tech admins like you and I to manage. Apple only allows certain features and restrictions for 3rd party vendors to work with. So unfortunately there isn't a way to completely lock out Settings by a 3rd party vendor.
What settings are the kids changing? Perhaps there's a workaround that could help (until Apple makes things more school/enterprise friendly).
