IMac 3.06 21.5" can't find permissions. I'm locked out.
2 month old iMac 3.06, 21.5", OS 10.6.2.
Installed 3 updates from Apple last night (aluminum keyboard, iLife, something else). All seemed to be working fine. Put computer to sleep at 2:00 PM, came back at 8:30 and when hit space bar, all settings and files were locked out, and computer reverted to default. Signed on and off, change identity, rebooted, ran disk utility, checked hardware, no joy. Checked console log, long string of errors when computer started at 8:30, if I'm reading correctly, it can't find path or file library/user...sync or settings. Log says quoting"something is seriously wrong" at the end of a string which I don't understand. I managed to save log - after a struggle ("you don't have permission to save...").
I can sign in with my original admin account, but all of the files and settings are denied to me. I had a secondary admin account with minimal assets which seems OK, but it can't access the files either.
Any suggestions? I'd like to save the files if I can, even if I have to reformat the drive, plus I'd like to find out what happened so I can stop it from happening again.
I duped this post in an OP about some person who had a complete fail in a new 27" iMac after a software upgrade. I don't know that the auto Software Upgrade is responsible.
Ok, problem fixed, if not solved. A very helpful Apple tech walked me through opening terminal and entering a sudo command line that established my user name as the owner with owner access. Like magic, everything reverted back to original state of affairs.
Reviewing the console log of the error, it started when I tried to wake up the iMac from sleep with network access from another Mac, which should not have been a problem. This is in the category of "Who knows?" If there is a repeat, I'll come back here and post it.

I've tried downloading iOS5 several times and after an hour each time I get a message that says my network connection has timed out. But I can't find any information about "timing out" or how to correct the situation. Any help?

You will have to restore it form Recovery Mode as it states in the artcile that brought you here.
Alternatively, place the device in recovery mode and restore it to erase the device:
Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to shut down.
While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
Continue holding the Home button until you see the Connect to iTunes screen.
iTunes will alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then restore the device. -
Is there a way to track down a stolen imac without a findmymac app in it?
My old imac was recently stolen and all I have is the serial number. I was told that with the ethernet ID I could possibly track it down once it connects back to internet. unfortunatedlyI don`t have this ID number. All I gave is the serial number. I would like to know if I can get the ethernet ID through it?The reason, I included the annotation that I'd upgraded my Itunes, (On my Computer) is B/C in many forums - the very first question, *HELPERS* ask, is. "Do you have the latest version of Itunes downloaded on your computer." I wanted to knock out any obvious replies.
Now- "DO YOU have any idea,"... how your UNHELPFUL remarks, do absolutely nothing but hurt others that might not have the EXPERIENCE you have? How do you expect people to know things without asking questions? Whew! RUDE!!

I am trying to use airplay with our imac and apple tv. The imac is a early 2012 model. The apple TV is brand new. the Icon is not on my toolbar and not in the system preferences>displays either... I just ran an upgrade so we are all up to date... is there anything else I can try?

AirPlay can only be used for IOS devices (iPad, iPhone, etc.)
AirPlay Mirroring can be used for certain Mac models that are running OSX Mountain Lion. If you are running 10.6.8 OS on your Mac, then you cannot use AirPlay Mirroring. You would need to upgrade the Mac to Mountain Lion 10.8.3.

Select the unwanted account in the left-hand Folder Pane. Right-click it, select "Settings".
The Account Settings pane will appear, with the chosen account highlighted. At the bottom of the pane is a button labelled Account Actions, which when clicked will reveal an option to Remove Account. You can select and remove as many accounts as you wish, but note that you won't be permitted to remove the default account. You'll first need to make one of them or create a default account. -

erikDepends on game, i would look first on the game file itself, right click (or ctrl click) the game file you installed (Applications?) and select show package contents, its usually a application bundle, as in basicly a folder where the application and the required files and subfolders are.

IMac can't find the Superdrive.
Basic problem: my 20 inch, 18 month old iMac, running 10.4.11, can’t find the internal DVD/CD Superdrive. It can’t be found with the system profiler, itunes, iMovie, Toast, etc.
If I put in a CD or DVD it goes in the slot but it does not show up on the desktop and it can’t be ejected by the keyboard.
The computer also will not boot up in the open firmware mode.
I called Applecare and we went through the usual suspects and fixes. That didn’t work so they said to take it into an apple retailer/service to get the Superdrive replaced.
The problem is: this is my second Superdrive- only two months old. The first Superdrive (original) wouldn’t burn (and I seldom burn discs) so I had to replace that in April.
I took my computer into Apple retailer MacEnthusiasts in West LA. They checked all the hardware and said the Superdrive needed replacing (they did that) and that the logic board needed replacing (they did that).
The problem is: the iMac still won’t recognize the Superdrive.
I don’t get the feeling that anything else is wrong with the computer. It will recognize an external firewire burner but not the internal burner.
MacEnthusiasts gave up and told me to call Applecare again.
Do you think I’d have better luck at a regular Apple Store?
I can burn a disc but I paid for an internal drive so I’d like a working internal drive.
What advice can you give me?

Depends on the Apple Store, but I think that is your next step, see what happens there before going beyond that, they may very well correct whatever it is. -
I have a Motorola surboard modem with a linksys router. I am trying to add the airport extreme so that all of my kids macbooks can get wireless internet. Unfortunately, I am now lost with these ultra SIMPLE instructions. My Intel based IMac is hooked up to my Optimum Online DSL through the above mentioned gadgets. Do I still need the linksys router? I can not get the AE to get past the yellow blinking light (excuse me, AMBER, blinking light!). Besides the obvious, using the correct port, etc. I think I am just confused which components need to be used and which need to be terminated, what needs to go into the IMac itself and why it can't find the base station that is sitting on the same table???? I THANK YOU, MY CHILDREN THANK YOU & MY HUSBAND WHO WILL HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS INSANITY, ESPECIALLY THANKS YOU!!!!

Do I still need the linksys router?
No you don't. The AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) can completely replace the Linksys.
The hardware connection should be an Ethernet cable from the Motorola modem to the WAN port on the AEBS.
Whenever you switch the Ethernet connection of a cable modem from one device to another you need to power off the cable modem. This causes the cable modem to forget the device it was talking to. When the cable modem is powered on, the cable modem will discover a new device to talk to.
Some cable modems have a backup battery which must be removed before the cable modem will completely reset.
Some times the information is stored at the ISP and not at the cable modem. Typically this requires leaving the cable modem powered off overnight (or at least several hours). -
When exporting to Photoshop can not find files
I have a drive that when I export an image to Photoshop it can not find the files. Any suggestions on getting them to read?
I'm using MAC OS 10.49 the latest. I have 9 external hard drives. I can bring in all thumb nail images from all drives and as I update meta data it changes on all drives. But when I go to edit a specific image in Photoshop any image from this one drive and only this one drive I get error message "can not find file". If go out of Lightroom and into Bridge I can see the image and launch it in photoshop. It only happens so far with this one drive. I have several of the same manufacture drives. Does this help!
