IMac 500 MHz PowerPC G3 not connecting to internet

I have a iMac 500 MHz PowerPC G3 running Tiger. We had it running to the internet fine in one location, connected to a switch to DSL. We moved it and wipe the computer. Now I am trying set it up to connect to the internet using the Internal Ethernet, but it will not connect. It will connect to all of the computers on the network but not the Internet. The dot in front of the Ethernet is yellow and says "Built-in Ethernet is currently active. Built-in Ethernet has a self-assigned IP address and my not be able to connect to the Internet."
I can connect a Powerbook to the internet using the same line and works fine. Does any one have any suggestions?

Dear Tonele,
*Built-in Ethernet has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the Internet."*
Who is your DSL provider? I have Verizon and couldn't connect this morning because of a bad IP address. Luckily a Mac Tech support guy (800-567-6789) talked me through reconnecting my currently wonky iMac.
He literally had me take the ethernet cord out of both the modem and my 'puter. Then he had me plug it into a different socket on my modem. I then used the control panel to tell the computer that it was going to connect by dialup. I saved that setting, then told it to connect by ethernet and saved that.
Only then did little blue let me get rid of the bad IP address.
Hope that helps and All the best,
Irene

  • IMac 500 mhz powerpc G3 - Internet connection slow, how do I fix?

So here it goes, I am pretty much a clueless newbie as far as the computer goes. But I have this much worked out. I am running a iMac G3 500 mhz powerPC (Thanks!, about this mac) with 512 kb of L2 cache, 100 mhz bus speed and 128 MB SDRAM on OS 10.3.9, and I have a wireless card installed that has firmware version 9.52, which I am using to connect to the internet through an apple airport, connected to a Motorola Surfboard SB5120 Cable modem.
Now when I am on the iMac the internet feels like dial up, I can literally stop to read magazine articles while I wait for the internet to load pages. But on the other computer a g4 apple powerbook (silver), it is quick and snappy. Both of these computers use the same airport and modem to connect.
What Can I do to the iMac to bring the speed up?

Tom's right. a G3 is a G3... but bump that RAM up even to 384 would be better. You "could" go up to 1GB, but it's up to you to decide the cost effectiveness of that. At OWC to could get 2x256 for about about $50 or 2x512 for for about $140... so the difference is pretty big. But I know the pricing is pretty competitve and you might find the 512's cheaper.
    Good luck!

  • IMac G4 says it's not connected to Internet but shows it is...

Hi, I'm not even sure I'm in the right place, but I have a few questions.
At first when I connected my iMac G4 to the Internet it kept giving me "there is an error connecting to "XXXXX" network" type thing.
Now, since I pressed Cmd, Option, O & F and did the rest-nvram and reset-all, when it boots it is showing it is connected to the internet but as soon as I've clicked network diagnostics and tried to go through that dialog box it will disconnect me from the wireless connection and go back to the error dialog mentioned above.
I just bought this, though the Airport Card was wacky so I replaced that.
It recognizes it in the "About Mac" "More Info" "Network" thing.
I've troubleshooted this beyond belief, and I need a more in depth help than just a simple "try restarting the computer"
    "try restarting the router"
I have tried this with several routers, all different internet connections, the whole nine yards.
HELP ME PLEASE, I AM SO FRUSTRATED!

I just bought this, though the Airport Card was wacky so I replaced that.
It recognizes it in the "About Mac" "More Info" "Network" thing.
So, you have tried two Airport Cards?  Both have not worked?
I'd turn off encryption for testing.   The card is rather slow. 10mhz.
Might be best to pack the cards in and try a usb dongle.

This linksys bridge is the safest solution since it doesn't require any Mac OS drivers.
Airport ExpressAirport Express is an external unit and you can configure it as a bridge.  802.11n ( I bevieve you will need a more modern version of Mac OS X to configure.  Sadly, Apple uses a configuration program to configure, not a web browser. )

You better give OWC 1-800-275-4676 a call to verify that these USB dongles will work with 10.3.
You would be better off with the more expensive dongle. The letters n/g/b correspond to the speed of the data transfer.  You should match the speed to your existing router. You best match on the highest speed. N is the highest. G is middle.  b is lowest.

  • Can I install Tiger in a Dual 500 MHz PowerPC G4?

Can I install Tiger in a Dual 500 MHz PowerPC G4, or is it better to stick with 10.3.9? I'm having some problems so I was going to wipe he hard drive and re-build everything from scratch o I was wondering if migrating to OS X 10.4.9 is worthwhile or even compatible with this PCU. Thanks.

Yes you can run 10.4 on your dual 500, I have a dual 450 (I overclocked it to 550...) and it runs pretty fast. You need a minimum 192 MB of RAM to install it and a minimum 128 MB of RAM to run it. I would suggest having at least 512 MB of RAM when running 10.4.
What problems are you experiencing? If it's just lagging and seeming slow it may just be worthwhile to clean some temp files and clean up your disk. IMHO, 10.4 is a much better system than 10.3, and runs much smoother. I can guarantee you that your system will run much smoother if you wipe the disk clean and put a fresh install of 10.4 on there, and also get a decent amount of RAM in there. After I upgraded my RAM to 1.5 GB, I noticed a substantial difference in speed, and got a lot less spinning color wheels. But one thing that you need to always keep in mind is to KEEP YOUR DISK CLEAN!!! Clean the temp files often and limit your internet downloading. If you keep your computer on all of the time, restart it every once in a while. There's a lot of little things you can do to increase speed in OS 10.4. Use spotlight and recent applications. Fill up your dock. Don't clutter the desktop, etc. There's plenty of articles on the net to help increase speed without adding anything else to your system, just navigating through the OS differently.

Hi, this has worked for a few...
Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712
    10.7…
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x instructions...
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    Click OK.
    Also, turn off IPv6:
    System Preferences » Network » AirPort » TCP/IP tab » Configure IPv6
    Or whatever Interface you use.

  • Apple TV does not connect to internet over the WiFi network

I recently bought an Apple TV and hooked it up to my Sony 46" HD LCD TV.
My desktop is an iMac running Mac OSX Leopard
I have created a WiFi network using the AirportExpress conected to an ADSL router.
The wireless network is working fine and I have access to internet through my iMac or other PC and Apple laptops.
Yesterday, I tried installing my new AppleTV following the little instruction book. My problem is that while the AppleTV detects my network (it shows up as the network) and on choosing this network connects to the network but gives a message that it has not connected to internet.
As a result while it synchronises with iTunes on my iMac, it fails to download from the internet directly. I am unable to upgrade to the latest version or play YouTube or images from my MobileMe account or log on directly to the iTune Store.
I have tried figuring out the problem but unable to do so. Thanks for your help.

I am having a similar (or identical) problem. I have a network running on my airport extreme. My imac and my girlfriend's laptop can connect to the internet without issue. The apple tv finds my network and reports that it connects, yet it doesn't seem to. I cannot access trailers or youtube, cannot update, and cannot play purchased content. I reset the apple TV, but that did not solve the problem. Should I reset the airport extreme?

Let's see.... you don't install boot camp to begin with, you may be referring to downloading the Apple drivers.

  • ITunes thinks I'm not connected to internet. No internet radio, updates

I've used iTunes to listen to Wisconsin Public Radio for years. It recently quit working (on the iMac) but still works on the iTunes on the PC. If I got to "internet radio" list, it says I'm not connected to internet, check connections, etc.
Even if I try the iTunes "check for updates" it gives me the "not connected to internet, check connections" error. This has been going on for weeks. My internet connection works fine.
Am I the only person having this problem?

I've written to Apple about this major bug in iTunes several times, but they don't seem to be interested in fixing it or following up. Weeks after this started to happen, I'm still stuck launching itunes on a PC instead of my iMac.

  • Installed Airport - getting "not connected to internet" error

I recently purchased a MacBook Pro and Airport extreme. I installed the Airport using MacBook (Snow Leopard) then hooked up my desktop iMac (OS X (10.4.11) - as per Tech Support recommendations. Everything works but here is a problem I encounter. When I wake the iMac and pull up Safari or Firefox I'm getting an error message of "not connected to internet" and the diagnostic box appears. I can hit "refresh" and the web site comes right up. Anyone have any ideas as to why this occurs?

Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions.
    Go to System Preferences
    Click Network
    Highlight AirPort and click Configure...
Choose “By default, join: Preferred networks”
Select your access point and Remove your access point with the minus button.
Launch your keychain access in Utilities and delete your access point keychain entry.
    Reboot
Go back to the “By default, join:” page and click the plus this time to add your access point. Enter the correct password, save, reboot.

  • Self assigned IP address will not connect to internet

Took iMac into Apple store, Genius tech confirmed wifi connection working in store.  Cleaned out a few library files, suggested I go home and attempt to access wifi connection again.
All other Apple devices connect to Internet using WiFi connection with Airport Extreme, including one Windows laptop.
Occasionally the wifi connection on my iMac would drop out.  In system preferences I would see the network there, select it, and was good to go.  Not this time!
Went back to the Apple store to ask for help.  Tech suggested I clean out "locations", so I did that.  I also did manual set up using IP address on Airport, got message that wifi is connected but iMac not connected to Internet.  Tried Diagnostic, Assistant,  and nothing works.  Wifi is working, I am on my iPad, but cannot get this iMac computer online.
Defaults to "WiFi has the self assigned IP address 169 254  167 148 and will not be able to connect to Internet
Under that message is Network Name and mine is shown.  again:  WiFi On, Alert: No Internet Connection, Apple Network selected and working.
How much does it cost to call Apple Support?  I feel sure a grandson or nephew could fix this but no one lives nearby:-). Thanks for any suggestions.

  • Safari says not connected to internet on certain sites when connection is good and IMG[] images don't show up anymore?

I recently updated to 10.6.8 from 10.5.x and have been having some issues.  First, Safari will say that my computer is not connected to the internet, but it is.  I can be on YouTube, for example, and then try to go to eBay, and it will say not connected to internet, but I can go to Google and it will be fine without doing anything.  Almost like it cannot connect to the server, but the message is that I'm not connected to the internet.  I can turn Airport off and back on and get on most pages that wouldn't open originally.  It's not site-specific.  Sometimes it's Google, Facebook, eBay, YouTube, forums, etc. and other times those same sites work just fine.
The next problem, which I feel is related is that IMG[xxx] images won't open some of the time now on forums that have Photobucket and Tinypic IMG codes inserted into threads.  It will just show the blue box with a question mark.  I think that's because my Safari can't open the image hosting websites because sometimes when I click on the blue box to open the link, it says not connected to the internet and Photobucket seems to be one of the regular problem sites.
I've tried clearing my cache, reseting Safari, and a few other suggestions on here from similar problems, but I haven't seen a post describing my same issues exactly.  I have not tried Firefox and would prefer to keep using Safari.

    Try repairing permissions.
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utilities
Select the startup  disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
    Select:  Repair Disk Permissions
This can take a few minutes and better to not use your Mac while it's running.
When it's finished, quit and relaunch Safari to test.

  • Secure link to itunes store failed computer not connected to internet tried ununininstalling everything to do with itunes no joy also error code coming up E0000225 anybody out there got any ideas

Secure link to itunes store failed, (computer not connected to internet tried uninstalling everything to do with itunes,no joy also errror code E0000225 appearing. Have turned off windows firewall and also my Bullguarg security settings. Can anybody out there please help me thanks.

    Hi,
You could be right that the response to clicking on help is a symptom of an entirely separate issue, but nevertheless the secure link to itunes is definitely failed, and I am unable to log into Itunes on either PC.
I also noticed that even if I click on the link to create a whole new Apple ID, I cannot do that either, presumably because the secure link is not working.
After I noticed that there were weird things happening this morning, I did change my Apple ID password in the hope that this might resolve it, but it seemed to make it worse.  Now, all of my apple devices keep constantly prompting me for the apple ID password, and randomly either accepting it, or telling me it is wrong.  I know the password is correct because I can log onto the apple Manage My Apple ID screens in a web browser with it.
I was starting to think that this is an ISP issue (BT Broadband), but I have not seen anyone else posting with the same issue.  Does Apple use a different security protocol to everyone else?  I'm asking because all other secure services seem to be working fine, but anything related to apple that requires a secure connection or authentication is having issues.
I have also seen reference to making sure that Itunes is listed as an allowed program in Windows Firewall.  I cannot seem to do this because it says that my Windows firewall is being managed by McCafee.  I have checked the settings in McCafee, and it appears to me that Itunes, Bonjour, and many other apple programs have been granted "Full" access.  As said before in any case I have tried temporarily disabling the firewall and even this did not solve the problem.
