IMac Core2 system HDD failed yesterday . Today it works fine. Huh ?

My hard drive appeared to utterly fail yesterday . iMac could not find a system disk at all. White screen only. Booted from DVD and ran utilities, then a "D" key startup diagnostic. , which reported a hard drive error - 1337. it's still under Apple Care (or another 2 months is all! ) but the nearest certified tech is 125 miles away and nearest Apple store > 500 miles.
Today, all is well. Mac booted fine . No issues at all. Disk utility and techTool report no issues with volume. S.M.A.R.T. Reporter is all green
I suspect this may be due to high ambient temperature in my work environment ( 80° F ) and possibly the iMac is clogged with dust from 3 years from running in what amounts to a garage studio. I installed a system temperature monitoring utility today but it indicates nothing unusual. The room is also much cooler today. That's the only thing I can think of , other than an erratic drive about to fail for good.
But yesterday my iMac was dead.

Before you do anything backup the computer using Time Machine and/or a bootable clone using SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner. Drives can fail and magically come back to life, however this is just a temporary reprieve, it will fail again!
You should run Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode, it may locate errors. If it does you can Google them or post them here.
You can remove the RAM cover at the bottom of the computer and vacuum out the dust bunnies that may have accumlated. Of course make sure the computer is turned off and all peripherals are disconnected.
Your ambient temp isn't very warm so that wasn't it however a dirty enviroment can be a reason for electronics failure. Dust will build up inside and block air flow, this makes the fan work harder trying to cool however all that does it pull in more air along with dust. If you are in a very dusty enviroment the best idea is to either clean it up or every few months to vacuum out the dust as described above.

AppleWorks has never been available for legal download.
Have you done the usual trouble shooting steps:
Quit AppleWorks
Delete most or all of the Recent Items list.
Remove the Preferences files to the Desktop or to the Trash.
Launch AppleWorks to see if the problems remain.
You'll find Recent Items in:
username > Documents > AppleWorks User Documents > Starting Points > Recent Items
There are several preferences files.
Go to:
username > Library > Preferences
Locate, select and delete the file com.apple.appleworks.plist
Still in the Preferences floder, locate and open the folder AppleWorks.
Select and delete the two Cache files and the Preferences file.
Button Bars is also a preferences file, but may be left where it is IF you have no problems that appear related to the Button Bar, and wish to preserve any changes you've made to the Button Bar.

Rich Client Login fails from Infoview but works fine if opened from desktop

Hi Friends,
When i open WebI Rich Client from my infoview (By changing the preferrance settings in Infoview), it returns an error as "Login Fails" , but if i open the webI Rich Client from my Start->Programs->Business Objects XI 3.0->WebI Rich Client , it works fine. i am not sure why invoking rich client from infoview fails, but the same works fine, if opened directly from the desktop. I have only one user "administrator" Created with no password in the Enterprise.
Configuration:
Platform:             Windows Xp
Type:                  Vertical Installation (All the servers and Presentation Layer in a single Box)
Boxi Version:     BOXI 3.0
Authentication:   BO Enterprise.

Windows XP is not officially supported for a BOBJ server installation. Can you consider installing BO on a Windows Server machine?

If the password is not working to get into your iPad mini, you would need to follow the steps to restore it. If you have a back up through iCloud or through iTunes, you can restore from that back up and it would not bring back the passcode unless it is encrypted.

Welcome to the Apple Community.
Assuming both devices are on the same network and that AirPlay is not turned off on the Apple TV, then simply tap on the screen when you are watching content you wish to stream to your Apple TV, then tap the airplay icon that appears in the control bar, choose the Apple TV from the menu that appears.
When displaying the content you wish to mirror on the iPad 2 (or better), iPad Mini, iPhone 4S (or better), double tap the home button (quickly) and swipe the bottom row of apps to the right to reveal the playback controls, tap the AirPlay icon and select your Apple TV from the list of available devices.

Specifically I wonder if the AppleTV may be trying to connect with an unsupported resolution giving a black screen. Try cycling display resolutions using these remote commands in step 6:
If your TV screen appears fuzzy or black (you see no video)
Make sure the television you are using supports the Apple TV resolution requirements. Please see the Apple TV technical specifications.
When you connect power, check to make sure the LED turns on. If the LED is not on, then verify with a known good power outlet or connect something else to the outlet you're using for Apple TV and make sure it works (such as a lamp or clock).
Make sure you're using the correct video cables and that they are connected firmly to Apple TV and to your TV.
Connect the HDMI cable directly into the Apple TV and your television, remove any third party devices or adapters.
Make sure the input setting you've selected on your TV matches the input you have your video cables connected to. See the documentation that came with your TV for more information.
Change the Apple TV resolution by pressing and holding the Menu and Up button for six seconds. The Apple TV will automatically cycle to the next resolution at approximately 20 second intervals. Pressing the Select button will immediately cycle to the next resolution.
If you are connected via HDMI, try unplugging and replugging your HDMI cable.
If HDMI isn't working on an Apple TV (1st generation), try component cables instead (and disconnect the HDMI cable temporarily). Read more about HDMI vs component video.

My USB CF (Compact Flash) Card reader is not mounting on my 2.5 GHZ Intel Core i5 iMac anymore.
Last week it worked fine to get pictures from my camera but now it won't mount at all.
I ejected it in the correct way rather than just disconnecting it but now i cannot get it to remount!
I cannot even see it in the disk utility or system profiler.
I have tried another card reader (a brand new one bought today) and the same problem exists. I've also tried different cards to see if that made a difference and they still arent being picked up on the Mac.
I have done all the usual things like rebooting, unplugging all other USB devices and then trying but nothing has worked.
I'm a photographer and I'm at my wits end here. I know the cards are fine as i have been using them without issue and they are also new.
Note: If I plug the camera in directly to the Mac, the Mac picks it up just fine as it always has done. Its just the card readers that it wont pick up anymore.
If anyone has any ideas at all other than the following (my so called friends advice) you'd earn my undting love:
Buy a PC
Use the camera (Thats why i bought the reader in the first place - importing RAW files from the camera is SLOW!)
Replace your CF cards (I have three 8GB cards two of which i had never used til today and they dont work either!)
Buy a new card reader (this is the 5th one in two days - none work on the Mac)

OK, restart in Safe Mode, this will clear some caches. It's possible one or more is corrupt. To restart in Safe Mode when you hear the start up tone hold down the Shift Key until you see a progress bar. Let it fully boot then restart normally and test.
Also I am assuming you have checked Finder - Preferences - General and see what boxes are checked in "Show these items on desktop." You can also mount an item in Disk Utility, simply highlight it and then look in the File menu for Mount.....

Update downloads fail, initial app installs work fine, Windows 8.1, internet connection and firewall settings fine

I just installed the CS6/CC applications I use without any issue. I then was prompted to install various updates. All the updates failed and the message says the downloads failed. I checked my internet and firewall settings and they are fine. I the was able to install a different CC application I hadn't installed before. That process worked fine so I retried all the updates. They all failed again and for the same reason. I have even tried a cold system reboot. Nothing works. I am really baffled.
Has anyone run into this and, if so, were you able to figure it out.

Autostart of network-service fails, but manual start works fine

I followed a guide to set up a network connection. The steps were to create a network config (/etc/config.d/network)

then a service description (/etc/systemd/system/network.service)

After the rebooting calling systemctl states the service as failed. If I start it manually using systemctl start network everything works fine.
How do I get it to work with autostart? Thanks in advance.

The guide states
To set static IP on enp3s0 interface you will need to create /etc/conf.d/network@enp3s0 config file and run:
# systemctl enable [email protected]
where enp3s0 has to be changed into your own interface name.
Note that the EnvironmentFile has to change to /etc/conf.d/network@<interface>.

Imac os wont start but windows bootcamp still working fine

My imac is around 4 years old and has been running both windows bootcamp and os x snow leopard for at least 3 years without any problems. My default operating system is mac and when I tried to turn it on this morning it gets stuck on the white screen with the grey apple icon and the loading icon spinning. Also a bar appears below this that I have never seen before.
I have tried opening the mac in recovery mode but it does not respond and goes to the same logo screen.
I have tried holding the 'D' key down while the mac comes on and doing the apple hardware test but once the window pops up it does not complete the probing and appears to freeze just before its completion.
I have also tried booting in safemode but the script stops at these commands:
launch tl: Please convert the following to launchd: etc/mach_init.d/dashboardadvisory.plist
launch_msg(): socket is not connected
However, the windows bootcamp is working fine and I can access my mac files from there.
Also worth mentioning is that it is not a grey screen that appears on start up it is just the normal apple icon screen.
Tried both smc and pram resets but nothing changed.
Also when I the mac holding alt both the mac hd and windows disc are visible but obviously same problem happens when I click on mac from there.
Any advice or suggestions would be really appreciated! Thanks.

If you use the first Grey Disk and the 'C' key, can you boot into OSX and then your disks can be inspected.

Hello and welcome to the Apple Discussions Forum.
I have hardly any experience with HP printers but since your posting has not been replied to yet I thought I'd offer some assistance.
With the printer status and ink levels working, it shows that you have a connection to the printer. So I would look at the issue being with the protocol being used for the print queue on the Mac.
Since you have XP and Vista working, I would check the printer queue configuration on either box. In XP, go to the Properties and select Ports. Click the Configure Port tab to view the connection. If you are using RAW, then this is known as HP Jetdirect-Socket on OS X. So if you are not sure what protocol was used before I would create another printer queue, this time selecting IP > HP Jetdirect-Socket. Then enter your IP address and select the K5400dn from the Print Using menu.
If this still fails to print then please reply. There may be limitations with adding the HP driver this way that I am not aware of. There may also be other driver options you can look at, such as HPIJS. If Greg Sahli reads this posting he has expert knowledge on this matter and will be able to offer some guidance.

I bought a retina 15", but it will not make a network connection to my 27" iMac 2 feet away. The wifi is working fine on both units, but prefer to use ethernet cable on 27". The question is, why can I not ewstablish a network connection between the 2? Air

my desktop iMac 27". The odd this is, the AirDrop works fine, so they can obviously see each other over wifi.
Sometimes, when I launch network on the 27, I will briefly see my retina notebook attempting to connect, but after a few seconds, the notebook icon disappears until I relaunch. Then we can go thru the same exercise, ad nauseum.
Any suggestions?

Because the retina 15 only has a wifi connection (no ethernet), that's the connection I'm stuck with for the notebook. But on the 27iMac, I did have both ethernet and wifi enabled. When I turned the wifi off on the 27, therer was a brief moment when both computers were showing their counterparts when I tried to make a network connection. BUT, after a few seconds of 'searching', the computer I was trying to connect to disappeared from the Network list.
So I tried the opposite; the retina can only connect thru wifi, so that's a given. I swithched my ethernet off and then enabed the wifi on the 27 and ....same thing: When I try a network connection, there are a few seconds of 'searching', then the ony option I'm left with is share screen, which doesn't work either.
I've read the 'dropped' network is a problem with the retina, but the odd thing is that I never lose my internet connection—that continues to work fine, as does Air Drop—but I can't seem to connect, network-wise.
Any ideas about the dropped network?
