IMac G5 Software restore CDs won't install on different iMac. Why?

I recently sold an OS X 10.4 iMac G5 Software restore CDs set. I got a message from the buyer and he says "I noticed that the discs say they are part of a hardware bundle and should not be sold separately." He says that the CDs will not install on his iMac.
Anyone know if it's possible to override this limitation? Thanks.

Nope. All install sets that come bundled with a computer are machine specific. Take them back and refund the buyer his money. Those disks should remain with the computer.

New iMac 10.7.1 Lion won't install Flash?

In the Utilities folder do you have an application called Adobe Flash Plyer Install Manager? If so, run that to remove all traces of Flash and then try re-downloading and installing from: http://www.adobe.com/flashplayer
As an aside, any reason why you haven't updated from 10.7.1 to 10.7.5 as the latest version of Lion includes numerous bug fixes.

  • Clean Install and Software Restore CDs

    Hi,
I have had my iBook G4 since February 2004. Yesterday I did a Clean Install and completely erased my HD. I used Install Disc 1 and 2. However, I was never prompted to insert Disc 3. Did I miss something?
Also, I also found the 8 Software Restore Discs. What exactly is "software restore"? After reading the pdf file and searching around these boards, I still could not find a definitive answer. What software is restored? The only application I seem to see missing is GarageBand.
    Thanks,
    DBDevil

Any software that you are missing from when you first got your ibook brand new should be there. It should also give you the option of which ones to install and such.

  • FCE 3.5 Won't install on my iMac

I just bought the full FCE 3.5 to install on my iMac and it stops after 45 min on the LiveType Media 1 disk. Tried it 2 times and am STUCK. I have enough disk space and updated my software as instructed prior to attempting to install. What's up - anybody know? Thanks much
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

Yes, according to apple support it is a brand-new, but known issue. Bad DVD. So they will send out another and I hope this one will work. What did you do when your second disk would not install live type?
I want to thank everyone for helping me out on this issue...I was and am a bit discouraged about the number of (little) problems I have had in the 6 months since I got my imac and MacBook Pro. For 10+ years on PCs I never had a single issue that caused me any frustration or down time. This will be 5 working days before they send a new disk out...period. If it was me I'd rip open a box and send it overnight today to keep the customer happy. Anyway, thanks to everyone who "chimed in" on this topic and if you have Live Type 1 stop installation at 69% - CALL APPLE, it's not you or your machine.

  • Leopard won't install on my iMac

So I erased my hard-drive to re-install my copy of leopard that came with my computer but it won't install- it keeps stopping about halfway and saying it can't be installed on my Mac. Any ideas?
My computer was working fine until it froze trying to update Adobe reader and when I forced it to restart it got stuck on the grey apple screen. I tried restarting from safe boot and it didn't work- it would only boot from the cd. I tried repairing the disk and permissions but it kept giving me different errors so I just went ahead and erased everything, which brings me back to not being able to reinstall the os.

Was it repairing disk or permissions that kept giving different errors?
I think this was available in 10.5 installs, but can't check... hit CMD+L before starting the Install or right after, that should show a log of what exactly is going on.
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
       2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
       3. Click the Erase tab.
       4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
       5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
       6. Highlight the drive, select Partition Tab, then Format type... MacOS Extended Journalled, select the Security Options button, choose Zero Out Data, Erase... after completion hopefully you'll be able to install.

  • I can't boot from the Install/restore CDs & won't recognize an external HD

I purchased a used Powerbook G4 with tiger 10.4.11 installed. I have two problems Which I think may be software based.
First I want to Install OS 9.2 to use some programs I had on my old Mac. However when holding down the C key the computer still boots off the HD. The disk I am using is marked Power Mac G4 Mac OS version 10.2, however the read me file said it should work for the powerbook.
Second I purchased a USB external HD for use as a back up and to store graphic and music files. The computer will not recognize it. every other USB device I have used has worked (printer, mouse, keyboards and flash drives).
Is this some sort of security feature? If so how do I reset it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Donis, and a warm welcome to the forums!
However when holding down the C key the computer still boots off the HD.
Is Firmware password protection in Mac OS X setup...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1352
It would block usage of all the startup keys, like C, N, T, D, CMD+s, CMDOption+pr, CMD +v, Option, and Shift, as well as booting from anything but the Hard Drive.
The disk I am using is marked Power Mac G4 Mac OS version 10.2, however the read me file said it should work for the powerbook.
Some PBs, which exact one do you have?

  • Lion won't install to 2008 iMac

I think I'm in a sort of OS twilight zone...
I have two iMacs, an old 2008 model (24 inch) and a new 2012 27 inch or whatever size the bigger one is. The new one is running Mountain Lion. The old one's hard drive died. I'm 99% sure it was running Lion. It had a recent Time Machine back up.
So I bought and installed a new hard drive. Now I needed to install an OS. Hmmmm. Can't install from the TM back-up. Can't install Lion or try to install Mountain Lion since I got those through the app store. So I dig through my boxes of old stuff and find a retail Leopard install disk. I do have a retail Snow Leopard disk but can't fnd it.
So I install Leopard on the old machine. Works beautifully. Only I forgot it doesn't have the app store. I try to import the TM back up but no go since the TM back up was done in a newer OS than Leopard. Well, OK...
So on the new Mac I download the installs for both Lion and Mountain Lion from the app store. Copy them to an external drive and try to use them on the old iMac. Neither will install. Both say that they are not supported on the old machine's architecture. Very odd since I believe Lion was previously installed on this machine and I believe the TM back-up was done in Lion.
So I'm stuck, I think. How the heck can I restore my TM back-up? Why won't Lion install when my machine seems to meet the specs? This isn't how it should be...
    Help!
    --Darin

So long as your Mac definitely supports Lion take a look at Pondini's help pages, 'cos it sounds like it should work following these instructions:

  • Acrobat won't install on my iMac

I bought a Fujitsu S1500 snanner bundled with set up software and Adobe acrobat 9 Standard which I installed on my pc. I have now changed the pc to an iMac and the Acrobat software will not install. I find it very strange that the software supplied does not seem to have the option to run on both pc and mac. My Canon MX320 software does have this option, Suggestions please.

Fijitsu sells both the S1500 scanner (packaged with Acrobat 9 Standard and other Windows software) and the S1500M (packaged with Acrobat 9 Pro and other Macintosh Software). They do not provide both Mac and Windows software with their scanner. If you have your own version of Windows you can use the Windows software running onder Bootcamp or emulation software like Parallels or Fusion. You cannot scan using the S1500 with Acrobat Pro 9 for the Mac. The S1500M comes with its own scanning software. It can scan to the Mac to a pdf file that you can then process with Acrobat or Preview whichever best suits your need. Personally, I use Acrobat Pro X for the Mac platform. If you only need to view pdf files, than the Mac's preview application may be sufficient for your needs.

  • Leopard won't install on PPC iMac G5

Hello, I've had my iMac G5 (non-intel) since 2005. I've recently upgraded my iphone to a 4, and I want to install Leopard so I can sync with my computer. After going to all the trouble and expense to get the software, I stick it in and click upgrade. I get the language box on the restart, then preparing install, but then I just get a message that says "Mac OSX cannot be installed on this computer. The software cannot be installed on this computer."
As far as I know, my computer meets the minimum requirements for an upgrade. Any ideas?

The gray discs are machine-specific, meaning that they will only work on the models of Macs they originally shipped with. They do not have drivers and code for other Macs, meaning they are useless unless they are with the original computer or equivalent model.
If you call Apple Phone Sales (800 MY APPLE in the US), you can still order a retail version of Leopard for $129. You may be able to find a retail disc elsewhere online, but make sure it is the black disc with the big X on it, not a gray disc.

  • HP F4580 on Imac in windows 7 bootcamp, won't install "no usb support" works OK on Mac side

Trying to install my HP F4580 so I can print from the Windows partition on my iMac,. Downloaded and ran the drvier utility but it fails saying "this PC has no USB support". Whereas the printer works fine on the Mac side of the partition.
    This question was solved.

    Hi,
Although installing the printer on Windows by using Bootcamp may work, it is not guaranteed...
The windows OS actually being installed as a virtual envoirnment, which means your Windows OS is using your Mac OS USB drivers as the host, and not those intended for Windows.
Therefore it is not being recognized by the software.

  • Leopard won't install on G5 iMac - nothing happens after restart

I put in the Leopard DVD into my first generation G5 iMac. A Leopard window opens and asks allows me to click on "Install Leopard." I double click and it tells me Leopard wants to restart my computer and has me type in the computer password. I do. The computer restarts and the gray screen comes up with the gray Apple logo/icon in the center of the screen. Nothing happens. The fans start to come on. It's stuck. Tried this 3 times. I have never had an install fail this way. I have to wonder if Leopard is ready for prime time.

I called Apple, in India I think. After going through my serial number (hold the computer upside down in your lap and use a magnifying glass to read the serial number, holding the phone in the other hand) I was asked the most inane questions like "Where did you buy the iMac." I don't remember and had to say "What does it matter where I bought it? I don't remember. Can we please get to the question I called about... this Leopard software I just bought from your company?" So, we got into the problem. Anyway, I was told to restart the iMac with the C down on the keyboard. I am using a wireless keyboard and suspected it wouldn't help... I thought the bluetooth software wouldn't work until the computer had booted... but lo and behold, the "spinning gear" soon appeared and, after that, the rest of the normal Leopard installation. It's going on now. Fingers crossed.

  • Leopard won't instal on G4 iMac

Hi, I'm sorry if this has been answered before but I'm new to discussions and can't find it anywhere.
I have a G4 iMac with X.3.9 and wanted to instal Leopard. The Disk made a frightful racket and stuck for hours -- had to zap the pram to get it out.
So I tried X.4 installing as an interim and it said the installation was unsuccessful, due to and I think it said disk defect or maybe error.
I have repaired permissions and tried Disk warrior, which also seems to stick halfway, though it will eject. I daren't try using the install software to repair the HD, as the instal software comes in 3 disks and is so far behind the 3.9 that I use that I'm afraid it will downgrade the software and wipe the software and programs installed after the upgrades to 3.9, also that I would lose the contents of the mail client.
What do I do now -- the computer works OK most of the time, though it is slow. But I have X.5 on my iBook (which is packing in for the 2nd time) and would like to have it on the iMac. Please help!

You should never install any software, especially a new OS on a broken computer. It will never fix anything and will usually break it.
You should immediately clone your HD since your computer is clearly in need of repair and you will lose all your data if you do not back it up promptly.
When you say that your computer works "most of the time" that means it's broken and must be fixed. A new OS does not fix broken hardware.

  • Windows 7 won't install on intel imac

I'm having trouble installing windows 7 ultimate (64 bit) on my imac. it's the 20 inch model from early 2007 (EMC 2133) if that helps.
It seems that when I try to install the windows 7 OS on my new partition the screen goes black and prompts the message "select CD-ROM boot type" and above that are options 1 and 2, both blank. Also at this point the keyboard does nothing; all I can do is restart the computer.
When I start up the computer and hold the option key I can see that computer recognizes the disk as "Windows", so I know the disk is fine, but I can't use it to install windows 7.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

I was having trouble myself with my iMac regarding a black screen and a blinking cursor after installation where the iMac would just stay idle. Below are solutions for all iMacs that have a problem with their graphics cards (ATI & NVIDIA).
Some people complained that they can't find the "repair your computer" from windows DVD. In all cases repeat steps below:
    *Solution 1:*
If you have a secondary monitor, connect the monitor to the computer before you install Windows 7. Then, you will be able to complete the setup process. After Windows 7 is installed, you can install an updated driver that corrects the eDP issue through Windows Update, Boot-camp or Snow Leopard DVD.
    *Solution 2*
When doing the repair windows step, it didn't work asking to provide a repair disk or something. I then clicked install driver, browsed to the C:\Windows\System32\Drivers folder and then renamed the ati*.sys file (only one file!) to ati*.renamed (NVLDDMKM.SYS or ATIKMDAG.SYS depending on your iMac)
Once installed, pop in the Snow Leopard OS DVD and run setup to get all the drivers working.
This can also be done with an NTFS plug-in (Tuxera, NTFS-3G, Paragon, MacFuse, etc.) that will allow you to see the files on BOOTCAMP on OS X. Follow the same path and rename the file.
The solution _+*Boot Camp: iMac (27-inch, Late 2009) displays a black screen during installation of Windows 7 using Boot Camp*+_ (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3173) didn't work for me...but!!!
Drag "Drivers" and "AutoUnattend.xml" from the iMacLate_2009_Win7Drivers folder, which was expanded in step 4, to the USB or SD card device's icon to copy the files to it. Do not copy them to any subfolders. (Normal USB or SD, no partition or Master Boot)
From the Windows 7 installation DVD, start the computer that has the AMD Radeon GPU that uses eDP (or NVIDIA). Immediately connect the USB flash drive after the computer starts from DVD. Follow the instructions to complete the installation process. When the system restarts for the first time, disconnect the USB flash drive.
If this still doesn't work for you, there a more..:)
    *Solution 3:*
If you applied solution 2 and you still have problems, try the steps below.
Solution 2 will make the Windows 7 DVD have the option "Repair your computer" for those who can't see it.
    Repair startup issues
    1. Put the Windows 7 installation disc in the disc drive, and then start your computer.
    2. Press a key when you are prompted.
    3. Select a language, a time, a currency, a keyboard or an input method, and then 4. click Next.
    5. Click Repair your computer.
    6. Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.
7.In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt.
Type (these commands are safe - more information)
    Code: Bootrec.exe /FixMbr
    Code: Bootrec.exe /FixBoot
    Code: Bootrec.exe /RebuildBcd
    *Press ENTER after each command.*
    *Restart your computer.*
That should do the trick! However if you still can't start Windows, then follow step 1 to 6 again and type these commands.
This has been tested on iMacs with ATI and NVIDIA cards. I hope this helps everyone as it I know how frustrating this process can get!!! Once again, this is a complete guide for most iMacs that support Boot-Camp. (32-bit and 64-bit)
Good Luck everyone and please let me know if it worked for you.

  • Software and drivers won't install on windows 8.1!!

I have a new computer running windows 8.1.  After downloading the printer software for my all in one C4580, the files extract but then nothing happens.  I've run the scan doctor and the install wizard and the same thing happens with those downloads.  Hence, I have no way to install the software.  In task manager the setup.exe is running and using alot of CPU's and so I ended the task.  Went through the download and all the "fixes" and still with no luck.  I've tried connecting my printer with the USB cable to see if that might help.  It didn't. Please, I need help!

    Hello ithacagoddess
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand the software will not run once it extracts. I will do my best to assist you! I am going to provide numerous suggestions that could assist you.
Please complete all of your Windows Updates. Doing this could install, or repair, what is necessary to resolve the issue. Use these steps when installing your updates:
    1. Open "Windows Update" in Control Panel.
    2. Click "Settings", and then click "Install optional updates".
    3. Next, click "Check for updates".
Next, I will have you install the latest redistributable package. This is the latest version and should be installed. This is very crucial towards the success of the installation. Please download and install if from this link: Visual C++ Redistributable Packages for Visual Studio 2013
There have been certain .dat files that have been known to cause this issue. They are HPOIN*.DAT and HPWINS*.DAT. Deleting whatever of these files exist could resolve the issue. To do this, go to the Charms Bar, then search and %WINDIR% and hit Enter. Once the %WINDIR% window is open, look for any files that state with HPOIN or HPWINS and delete them.
If you have McAfee Live Safe installed, this program might be causing the issue. This software directly interferes with our printer software. Disabling the entire program should be done. The Spyware Realtime Scanner is the particular function that causes these issues.
In addition to disabling that program, you can perform a clean boot to disable everything else that might cause an issue. Here are some instructions on how to do this: Performing a Clean Boot in Windows
At this point, I would try reinstalling the printer software. Please use the Printer Install Wizard when installing the software: HP Printer Install Wizard for Windows
Please respond to this post after you try everything! I do have additional troubleshooting to suggest if this fails. Thanks for choosing the HP Forums. Have a great day!
