IMac G5 Sound Dropout

Im having a very annoying problem with the sound output on my iMac frequently dropping out. Im using a USB Digidesign MBox 2 with speakers connected to it as my sound output and input device. Trouble is if im playing music in iTunes, or using another audio-related application at the same time as im using my airport the sound will randomly cut out and i need to restart the application or unplug the MBox 2 to get the sound stream back.
The dropout problem has been happening pretty much since I got my iMac back in November and has also occured when using more than one audio application (eg: Reason and iTunes) at once so im not sure if its driver related or not. I've check for driver updates but there are none.
Any suggestions or help solving this annoying problem would be very much appreciated
Thanks!

I've always had it plugged into the back of my iMac, plus i've tried it in all three USB ports so that it's displayed on its own in the USB Bus part of the System Profiler. It's very strange. Im not sure if it has something to do with the CPU load, as ive noticed today that the dropouts occur easier when the audio application im using is taking up more CPU %, and also when i've been using other USB Midi devices at the same time (keyboard and midi controller)

My IMac has sound but no picture? I've tried everything but a hard restart. Anyone else know a solution? Oh by the way, my eight your old son was the last to use it but swears he didn't press anything.

When i turn on my iMac its sounds like a light bulb struguling

Not sure what a struggling light bulb sounds like. It is very hard to describe sounds sometimes. Is it an electrical buzzing or crackling sound? Does the computer still startup normally after the sound? You have Lion so I wonder if it is a new iMac. If so, call AppleCare.

  • Imac's Sound and Mic stopped working!

Last night my Imac's sound stopped working. Internal speakers don't work, plugging in external speakers don't work. I thought this was just a hardware problem, but my internal mic also doesn't work, which is on the other side of the computer....
I've rebooted many times, cleared the pram, checked my preferences, played with the audio midi controls, plugged and unplugged the cord in the line out and did everything besides dance around the mac singing.
Any suggestions on how or why this would just stop working? It has to be something i'm missing, some setting.
I've downloaded Line In, didnt do anything. I downloaded Sunflower, didn't do anything.
The only thing I can think of is I just loaded Parallels and Win XP, but I just uninstalled it and still no solution.
    Help please!!

ok let me help you with this process, go to the system preferences in your OSX go to the icon Sound click on it internal volume should be all the way up or mid high up Output volume either all the way up or mid way up thats in the input tab on the top. Now the output tab should the balance should be in the middle and output volume should be mid or all the way up . If that is not the case then there could be a hardware problem which I doubt because when the computer is off it creates a connection from line in to line out.

Why when I try to play an avi video on my iMac the sound works but not the picture? I need codecs but xvid doesn't support Macs.
Maybe I should figure out if and how to use torrents and forget about using QuickTime.

Try VLC, can play almost any format known to man...

Or you can install the Perian extension to Quicktime to allow for Xvid playback.....

  • IMac G5 Sounds like a jet taking off

Our iMac G5 sounds like a jet taking off shortly after we boot it up and try to open any applications. Also, when we try to power down and then turn it back on, a flashing folder shows up with a question mark and finder icon. Any ideas out there?

If you have not already, reset PRAM

and if that does not help, reset SMU (power management)

  • Sound dropouts while playing wav in timeline

    Hi,
since today there is aproblem with Audition 3 on a Lenovo T500 Laptop.
It is used for sound recordings, done via an external USB soundcard (Virtual 7.1 USB Audio Adapter, StarTech). Everything was going fine untill today: When you now play a wav file in the timeline, you will hear a cracking or dropout about every 20 seconds, although the soundfile is not damaged. If you play the same file e.g. in audia. These things I have tried to solve the problem:
    - set the waveform cache from 32 MB to 100MB
    - defrag the HD
    - update V3.0 to 3.1
can somebody help me or can report about similar problems?
    Greets & thx
    Kammi

uninstalling AA3 and reinstall was the solution.

  • 24" iMac Startup Sound

I recently upgraded my PPC G4 to a brand new 24" iMac.
On my G4, the mac startup sound would play over the external speakers, and when booting the computer late at night, I could turn down the volume to avoid waking my roommates.
The new iMac 24" seems to blast the startup sound, even if I mute the volume before shutting down.
Does anyone else have external speakers hooked up to their new 24"? Does the boot sound come from the external or internal speakers?

One of the oddities of the iMac line is that the startup sound comes from the internal speakers. If you have external speakers plugged in and unpowered, it makes no difference, you still get a "BLING" when you start up. And since the 24" machine has extra big speakers and bigger audio amp, you get an extra big BLING! Nice, eh?
You might try the freeware utility called "Psst" <http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/25458>. I haven't tried it, but it does seem to be able to silence the startup sound on most Macs.

  • IMac noise/sound

    Hi,
My 11 month old iMac had it's hard drive replaced in November and ever since has made a strange noise.
It makes a sort of 'blip' beep sound at random intervals. Similar to submarine, although not quite the same. I don't get the sound on start up, but I always get it when the screensaver has been on. Otherwise it seems totally random. I also hear it with the sound switched off.
I'm guessing it's some sort of alert sound, however I've looked for ways to identify it or switch it off and come up with nothing. It's only done this since it came back from repair.
Any help with identifying it would be very gratefully received as it's starting to drive me mad!
    Dani. x

Sorry to hear of your pending insanity.
You can start looking in System Preferences and checking the preferences for any applications that are open when you hear it. I suspect it just going off because some preference is checked.
You can also do a SMC reset, I doubt that will do anything but it won't hurt it either.
    *SMC RESET*
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
    • Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    • Release the power button.
    • Attach the computers power cable.
    • Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    *PRAM RESET*
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    • Turn on the computer.
    • Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    • Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.

  • Using the iMac for Sound...?

    Fellow Mac enthusiasts,
I am currently playing Xbox 360 on an old CRT moniter next to iMac, using a vga adapter. The Problem is I dont have any sound. So in theory couldnt i plug in the the digital audio cable that comes from the 360's Sound ( same size as the audio in port on the iMac/iPod headphone size) into the iMac's audio in slot, usually used for microphones, but just plug it in and use a program to just play the sound? Get what im saying?

    Hi Gamedude6
Yes just be sure that you are using a 3.5mm stereo jack in the Mac like the one in the link below.
    http://www.maplin.co.uk/images/Full/ck27_2003cat.jpg
Then have a look at this handy little app. call LineIn from MacUpdate for passing the audio from input thur to output.

  • Streming iMac videos' sound to AX with AirPlay

Hi everybody, I'm just wondering if I can stream the sound from any of my iTunes movies to my AirPort Express while watching the video on my screen. Kind of what you do with your iPod, where you choose where to play the sound of what you watch on your iPod's screen.
If I play any sound on my AirPort Express, I'm unable to watch the video on my iMac.
Please let me know / Thanks a lot!

  • Vista on iMac terrible sound

I've installed vista on a few 24" iMacs. The sound produced under vista is just terrible (metallic echo), on all of them. I've used the drivers delivered with OSX 10.5.0.
Are ther any better drivers or any settings that produce better audio?
btw. The sound under OS X is fine.

I have noticed that too. I think it sounds a little better if you go to Control Panel > Sound > Speakers > Advanced and set the Default Format to 24 bit, 192000 Hz. The default is 16 bit, 44100 Hz so that might something that made it sound bad. I took a screenshot of what I was doing at http://tinyurl.com/5mb4pp.
    Hope this helps.
