IMac G5 system disk
I acquired a G5 iMac for my kids. The previous user protected it with a password which I do not know. I tried starting up from a 10.2 install disk so I could change the password but it keeps starting up from the HD! I'm holding down the C when I start up. What am I doing wrong?

You likely need Mac OS X 10.4 or Mac OS X 10.5.
You will need to get the retail discs, propably available on eBay.

Sorry put all question on subject line. As I said fitted new hard drive, but all I get is a folder with a flashing grey question mark. Tried system disk but that is now just spinning around in DVD drive and I can't get it out. Any help with these problems would help
Sounds like the new drive is not being recognized. Could be it's a SATA3 drive with a 6Gb/s transfer rate and needs to be jumpered down to 3. But if the 2007 is 1.5, it may not work at all, even if jumpered down. Other possibility is a not properly secured cable or a cable that's come loose from the logic board.
What is the model of the 2007 Mac? What's the new drive? Did you do the installation or was it done by a shop?

Is it possible to get a system disk for my old iMac without the receipt?
I use an iMac at work and it's really slowing down. (10 minutes at least to open any application) I have 3 GB of ram and use only a quarter of my hard drive space. I've looked everywhere for the startup disk to no avail. I've used TechTool Deluxe and it says that the directory needs repair. When I used DiskUtitlity last, it says that the hard drive needs repair and to restart with the system disk and use Disk Repair. If anyone has any thoughts on this matter, I'm all ears.
No receipt is needed assuming they are still available for your vintage machine. All you need is a credit card and the machine's serial number. Then call AppleCare and if they are available they will ship a replacement set for a nominal cost.

I need to reinstall the system software on my older iMac. I have lost the system disks, though... so now what? It had 10.4. We moved, and I have looked everywhere. Am I doomed to find a way to buy it? Can taking it into the Apple Store fix it? Will it be expensive THERE? I've already saved all of the files I want off of it.... I just need it to work now.
You've lost me on why you need to reinstall Tiger, when you already have all the files you wanted (which means Tiger worked perfectly fine). If you want to upgrade to Leopard, that's a different issue: your Mac needs to meet the minimum system requirements for that, which you can easily determine.
If you just want to get a replacement set of Tiger install discs, you can try calling AppleCare and see if they're able to send you a replacement set, and if not, you'll have to buy a new set yourself. You can get them on eBay, Craigslist, and HardCore Mac (http://store.yahoo.com/hardcoremac/), although they sell it for ridiculous prices.

My 1TB Seagate external USB not recognized by my iMac (intel) in Disk Utility, nor in Finder as well as in Terminal "diskutil list" but it is listed within the System Profile, which includes the location ID of 0xfa400000 / 5. Can the location ID be used to restore the identity of my external USB ?

"Non-System Disk" Boot Camp Windows 7 on 5K iMac
I've been trying to install Windows 7 as a Boot Camp partition on my 5K iMac for a few days now. It's driving me crazy.
I've tried:
Installing from multiple different USB devices – all USB 2.0, 16gb or 32gb. I've tried 4 different sticks now. I just tried a Sandisk 16gb as someone here pointed out none of theirs worked except their Sandisk drive, but no luck with that either.
Using multiple different ISO's, all x64 – all Windows 7 but different versions (Home Premium, Professional, Ultimate). These are all downloaded from the Digital River sources.
I contacted Apple Support and they advised attempting the Boot Camp setup while in Safe Mode. With this method, I was unable to even begin the process as the error message 'Must be Windows 7 or higher' comes up instead. I'm pretty sure this is just because I can't mount drives in Safe Mode.
Here's what happens:
Format the USB drive with 1 partition, set it to Master Boot Record, FAT32.
Run Boot Camp Assistant.
I leave all three options selected: create USB, download Windows software from Apple, and then create the partition.
Select the x64 Windows ISO.
Select the USB drive. Actually, there are no other drives connected, so it just auto-selects.
Hit 'go'. Let it do its thing. It asks for a password twice during the process, and takes about 20 minutes.
I then create a partition. I've been using 96gb, but have tried going up to 128gb to see if that makes any difference. Nope.
iMac reboots when that's done. It sits there for a little while with the backlight on and a black screen, then shows "Non-system disk. Press any key to restart.".
I hit my head on the desk a few times.
I try restarting the iMac and bringing up the boot manager to see what disks are available. There's only one: Macintosh HD. No recovery HD, and no 'Windows' drive I've seen on some other posts.
I restart the iMac and let it try booting normally again. This time, and all subsequent attempts, I get a "No bootable disk" error.
At this point I find some sorta-relevant post that recommends trying something else, so I remove the partition and try that – a different USB, a different ISO (of the same thing). I do not have a disk drive of any kind and cannot use Windows that way.
I've updated to the latest version of Yosemite, but that changed nothing. I've also tried inserting the bootable USB in my rMBP 13", but that doesn't show it as a boot disk either.
Not sure if maybe I'm missing a step? I've been following Apple's step-by-step guide in their Support pages.
If anyone has any experience with this problem, any advice would be greatly appreciated.Ok. I've created a Boot Camp partition, and WININSTALL is the USB drive I've created via Boot Camp Assistant.

Thanks for taking a look at this. I haven't been able to find a Windows 8.1 ISO to try as I don't have a license for that, only Windows 7.
Also, the USB stick I'm using now is a Sandisk Cruzer. I've seen it used elsewhere here with success, so figured it must be a suitable device.
Any ideas of what else to try? -

I'm having all sorts of issues with getting windows 7 installed through bootcamp. I have the late 2012 imac 27 inch fusion i7 16 gigs of ram 680gtx. I downloaded the latest bootcamp drivers to my usb after i re-formated it. Partitioned the drive 200 gig windows 700 gigs mac. It restarts and then i get this error screen, "non-system disk.(see photo below) Press any key to reboot." which of course is unresponsive. I hard reset with the Option held into boot back into mac. I'm using Windows 7 64 bit. Please, any help would be appreciated. I have a unopened copy of Bioshock Infinite waiting for meThe Macs with a built-in Optical drive use the Windows DVD, because that is what BC tells it to be set to. The USB is not made bootable on such machines.

I have an iMac 17" 1.83ghz intel core from 2006. I need to reformat the hard drive. Which system do I reinstall - the system disk in came with or can I install 10.6.8 which is what it's running now. And does the system have to be for an iMac?

I am having an issue while trying install OEM Win 7 Home Prem. 64bit on my new iMac 27 inch late 2012 with bootcamp. I am using all brand new products with an Apple SuperDrive. After downloading the Windows Support files onto a USB and paritioning the hard drive, the system reboots to begin the Windows 7 install; however, a black screen appears and it simply says, 'Non-system disk. Press any key to reboot'. I am not sure what to do here and any help would be much appreciated! Thanks

Which doesn't surprise me all that much as Apple has limited the external superdrive to working with only some Mac computers. Yes yours is included when you are booted into OSX but we are talking boot camp and Windows here.
You may need to place the Win install files on a USB thumb drive by making an ISO of the install files and or downloading an ISO file from the "My Digital Life" website for the version of Win 7 you have and then using a program like ISO to USB to place the Win install files on a USB thumb drive. Bad part of all of that is you may need a Windows PC to do that. I am not sure if it can be done on a Mac using Disk Utility and or even if Disk Utility can expand the ISO file whether it can make it bootable. -
I have a borrowed iMac that ended up with a sector 1 corruption. The owner apparently no longer has the original system disk for this machine. We did manage to get OS X 10.3 to load on the machine but it appears that this machine had 10.4 loaded on it at one time. For now, iTunes and iLife2008 which were loaded on the machine are no longer functioning.
When I attempt to load 10.4 on the machine, it gives an error message to the effect of: no processor that supports this software can be found. I know that it must have had 10.4 loaded at one time because the version of iTunes that showed in the applications folder was 8.1.1 (which apparently requires 10.4 or higher.
The owner of this machine really does not know anything about it (I am a PC user who wanted to try this out).
Any suggestions on how to proceed would really be appreciated. I am awaiting the delivery of my new iMac (having finally seen the light!!!)

That sounds like you may have used a Tiger (10.4) installation disc that came with an Intel Mac. Those discs normally only work on the Mac model it came with. Also, Tiger was not universal so there was a version for PowerPC Macs and a version for Intel Macs. An iMac G4, if that's what you have there, is a PowerPC Mac.
What you need is a retail installation disc for Tiger. These are the discs sold separately in a shrink-wrapped box. They are black with a big silver X. They will install Tiger on any supported Mac that has a DVD-capable optical drive. Apple no longer sells Tiger, so you will need to get an used copy on eBay or other online source. You do not need to worry about Intel versus PowerPC, because all retail Tiger installation discs are for PowerPC Macs.
If your iMac G4 is the model with USB 2.0 (which should be 1.0 GHz or 1.25 GHz) and you have sufficient RAM, you can get the current latest Mac OS X version, Leopard (10.5). This version is obviously still sold by Apple. Leopard is universal, so the same version of the system is used by both PowerPC and Intel Macs. -
Did the iMac 24" come with System disks
Folks - I bought an open box 24" iMac from Best Buy about a year ago. My hard drive has now lost about 60 GB of space while I was doing some Lightroom updating...bringing over a few months of photos.
Running OnyX verification it says I need to repair my internal disk. I can't find the original system disk and I don't remember there being any in the box. I have the box...so I'm wondering if it ever had any disks?
My computer is a 24" 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo on Version 10.4.11.
If I had a CD/DVD system I'd boot from it and repair the internal disk...I guess after backing up my stuff!

Not that I am aware of because the system takes up most of a dvd so it would be too large to download and most any third party Utilities cost money so you would have to purchase the software disks anyway.

Yes you can do that. Many of us techies keep a bootable backup for this type of situation. You could also purchase yourself a copy of Disk Warrior and use that to Repair your Volume directory because sometimes even when you boot to another drive and run Repair disk it may or may not be able to repair the directory. Disk Warrior does a better job at Repairing Volume damage.

IMac won't boot form System Disks
Hi, I'm searching for some help.
My iMac G5 locked up and wouldn't start again. Neither would it start up from the System CD. It came with 10.4 Tiger installed. The computer came from another office and when I requested the System Disks, they had to search for them. When I tried starting up from the systems disks I get a Kernel Panic. If it's any help, it starts out with "Panic (cpo 0 caller 0x002E490) unable to find driver for this platform: "PowerMac8,1"
So we tried starting up form Panther and it booted up, we re-installed Panther, but then the iMac's fan ran constantly, and the burner software didn't work, because it couldn't run on 10.3. We put the system software for 10.4 in the drive, and selected the "Install Tiger icon". It tells me to restart to install, but it wouldn't restart.
Then we updated the 10.3 software to 10.3.9. That stopped the fan from running constantly and now the burner software works, but the comp still needs to be re-installed, cause it should be running on the 10.4, the Os that came with it. That and printer Utility, mail and other programs aren't working. It restarts now with the system disk, but I get the same Kernel Panic as before. Could it be that the other office gave me the wrong system software disks?
Thanks in advanced.Welcome to Discussions - what do the discs say? They should say iMac G5 right on the label. Install discs are system and machine specific, the wrong disc will not work. However, you can install a retail version of Tiger and then use the 10.4.9 combo updater to get fully up-to-date.

I have checked the Finder / Preferences / General is selected to show the hard drives, also in Finder / Preferences / Sidebar is selected.
I have opened the Disk Utility application and if you see the system disk, I have told you to check and tells me that the disk has no problems.
Otherwise the iMac works perfectly, but Safari, which is all I have used since the problem besides Disk Utility sometimes gets stuck, and has trouble reconnecting.
Help, please.

Recurring iMac G5 Hard Disk problem and worthless AppleCare
Hello all! I have a recurring iMac G5 2Ghz (20-inch) Hard Disk problem.
I bought my parents, aged 52 and 55, an iMac last summer. Hoping this would be their solution to a hassle free and easy computer environment, since I would leave for China for about 1 year. But last month the hard drisk crashed and could not be fixed.
At first the start up speed slowed down, then the start up process would continue infinitely, then the computer just booted into a screen with a question mark.
I have a AppleCare Protection Plan (APP) and so I called the Help Desk and they put me in touch with a Service Center (Sittard, the Netherlands). Now I thought, since I live within the proper range of at least 3 service centers (Heerlen, the Netherlands), I could get on-site support (as stated in APP), unfortunately for unknown reasons, my parents had to drag the 20 inch monster to the service center.
Normally the repair should take 2 days, but instead it took 10 working days. My dad naturally asked, if they could restore the data on the disk. This was only possible if we paid about 2000 euro. So, no deal!
After picking the iMac up again, the computer booted into the Mac OS installation. This again surprised me, since according to the APP they should at least put some effort into restoring the applications. Not even iLife was pre-installed, which was of course on the computer when we bought it. Next to that the Service Center's Mac OS installation disc was still in the drive; how careless!
They were quite sad about the lost data, but accepted it, as we all know that these things can happen to electronics. BUT today, the same problem recurred! First the start up process slowed down and now (again) it tries to start up infinitely.
The hard disk is brand new (1 month), no strange programs and no abnormal use. According to the diagnostic tools the file structure is damaged, but it seems to keep getting worse. The Apple Help Desk guy was even surprised this happened to a brand new disk and installation. He recommended reinstalling the system.
But, I'm not happy with this solution! A hard disk breaking down, is one thing. But the same problem recurring 1 month later made a couple of alarm bells go off. I'm hoping Apple will consider replacing this machine from **** with a brand new iMac. Since my parents are scared ********, that whatever document they type today might disappear again tomorrow. This is not a comfortable computing experience.
By the way: the computer has only basic software: Microsoft Office, Skype and iLife and my parents only use those programs, surf the net and send email.
Any of you had a similar bad experience with the iMac's hard disk, AppleCare or any of Apple's Service Centers? Or does anyone know how to reach Apple by email?
iMac 20 G5 2Ghz Mac OS X (10.4.6)I had a similar problem with my 20" 2Ghz iMac.
After replacing the HD and the next 'going bad' the tech realized there was a different problem.
After discussing it, and the distance to an authorized repairer he offered on-site repair.
After a lengthy parts delay I was offered an upgrade to a iSight iMac.
The tech narrowed my problem down to a faulty logic board before offering a replacement. He could have been wrong but it seemed logical with all of the same symptoms.
Press your AppleCare to replace this computer. They are going to try and repair but insist if this fix doesn't work you want a new iMac.
I hope everything works out for you.
Edit: There is a great program that Apple techs recommend called DiskWarrior. It did not fix my problem but it allowed me to get my most important info off of the computer before it went to computer heaven. Might not work for all but it works well for me as I still use it today. -
"Non-system disk Press any key to reboot"- Trying to install Win 7 on Mac Mini
Hello. I'm trying to install Windows 7 on a new-model Mac Mini ('Late 2012'), which I just bought from Apple. [Specs: 1 TB Fusion drive, 2.6 GHz intel Core i7, 16 GB RAM, OS X Mavericks (latest), Graphics: Intel HD graphics 4000, Screen: LG Flatron 24"].
After following instructions on Bootcamp, I tried installing it through my external USB Apple Superdrive (DVD), but for some reason as soon as the system finishes getting things ready and reboots to begin installing Windows 7, I get a black screen with an error message as follows: "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key". Pressing the keys on my keyboard does nothing (even though it's a wired model, not a wireless one.) I'm forced to do a hard shutdown using the power button and hold down the Option key in order to get the system to show the Mac HD where OS X is. It also shows the Windows DVD as another option, but when I select it and the system boots, I just get the same error message again. So I go back to a hard shutdown and reboot to go into OS X again.
Not sure what to do, I did some online research and in one post in the Frequently Asked Questions for Bootcamp, it says for installing Win 7 and Win 8, the computer won't work with external USB drives (*totally nuts in my opinion - Apple has to fix this stuff if they want to entice Windows users into buying their sleek, quiet hardware). Instead, the post recommends creating a Windows 7 ISO file from my Windows 7 DVD and putting it on a USB thumbdrive that Bootcamp is going to use to put all the Apple/Windows drivers on for the installation process. I'm also told I have to unplug my Superdrive (no explanation given for why). So I do all this and get Bootcamp Assistant running again. Unfortunately, as soon as the system reboots after going through all the usual preparation steps, I get another black screen with a new error message: "Non-system disk Press any key to reboot". So I'm at a loss for what to do next.
(I've also have an iMac that I bought more than a year ago that I also put Windows 7 on, with no problems that time. Go figure.)
