IMAC LCD Display

One of my IMACS (24 in. 2.4GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo) experienced an LCD that was dark in the upper 1/3 of the screen. The OS (Snow Leopard) seemed to operate normally. Since I had a warranty from Best Buy, I took the IMAC to them for repairs. After one month they returned it with a recertified hard drive (listed at $23.93) . The work order stated that it had passed all tests. In the process of importing data to the IMAC, which is in my home network, the system test for hardware was passed. I had a problem with an admin. password but, with help from Apple tech support (under the S. Leopard warranty) I was able to solve it. Two days after the IMAC was returned from the Geek Squad (last night), the LCD went dark agin in the same area. I shut the system down. This morning, at log-in, the screen was clear, except for a small area in the middle of the screen. All signs of darkness have cleared up and I have the IMAC under observation for the day. Has anyone experienced a similar problem? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Allen so your telling me if I replace the LCD it will solve my problem?
Absolutely not!
A new display will only fix the line if the line is due to the display itself and not the cabling or another part of the video subsystem.
Like Mirian said, you MUST have the probelm professionally diagnosed before jumping to a soution. If there is a cable problem but you replace your LCD, the line will still be there and you will have wasted a lot of money. The display units are nether cheap or easy to find.

    Hi Guys, well its been almost 5 months that lines have started occurring on my Imac LCD.. however i know its expensive to repair so i did not care initially. However recently i bought the cable to mirror another lcd display to my imac as the LCD started to have alot of flickers.. This is my question.. anyone knows if my Imac LCD displays blacks out.. do you think the mirroring of LCD will be affected?

    It mostly depends on where the problem is. If the problem is the video controller, then, yes if one display goes out the other will also, because the controller feeds both the internal LCD and the external display. If the problem is just the internal LCD display itself, if it goes out your external display may still work.

  • Problem with LCD display on 17" iMac G4

    The LCD display on my iMac went wacky on me yesterday. It's as though one of the three primary colors no longer works. The screen has a green tinge to it, and anything that's supposed to be black shows up as green. I've reset everything, run the Hardware Tools diagnostics (no problems found), and changed resloutions, monitor depth, and brightness levels many times. No luck. The screen is readable although very ugly.
    Obviously I can take it to an Apple Store, but does anyone have any idea what it might be? I've searched the net and the forums and can't find anything close, but I know I can't be the only one to experience this problem. I called a mac repair shop a few minutes ago, and they said that the logic board would need to be replaced. I just can't believe that because nothing else is a problem.

    I "fixed" the problem a few days ago. Digging around here in the forums, I found another thread that gave explicit instructions on how to open the iMac and re-seat the connections. Here is the link (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=196785&start=30&tstart=30). It's a post from Androcles made on 3/26/06.
    Just as he indicates, when I did this I found nothing to be loose at all, however upon putting it all back together, on the 2nd re-boot all was back to normal and still is. It's amazing how clear and crisp the screen is after suffering through the green hue for a few weeks...

  • Where to buy imac G5 LCD display 17in

    Hi,
    I need to replace my imac G5 display. It develops two approx 1.5in black blobs at the bottom left screen, after rainwater got into it and seep into it.
    I have dismantled the imac and got access to the LCD. Remove the rust spots on the frame and check that it is dry. Put everything back but I dont seem able to remove the blobs and some vertical lines.
    The problem is confined to the right half of the screen..and the blobs and vertical lines are stable (not growing).
    I think if I replace with a good LCD display, I should be able to get back my Imac into shape.
    Anyone has experience replacing the imac G5 LCD. (D-I-Y).

  • LCD Display Slightly Rotated Within iMac

    I have a very subtle problem with my new 21.5-inch iMac, but it's disturbing me.
    The LCD display is very slightly rotated clockwise within the body of the iMac. The top row of pixels is not totally parallel with the top line of the iMac. The top-left side of the LCD display is 2.6 cm from the top line of the iMac, whereas the top-right side is 2.7 cm.
    I know it's just 1 mm, no big deal right? But I wonder, is this something that Apple would repair free of chair, given that the iMac is well within its 1-year warranty? Or am I just being too picky?

    Is it common for the LCD panel inside a Mac to be slightly out of alignment, compared to the glass panel? I think the same degree of rotation is more noticeable on an iMac, compared to a MacBook, because the screen is so much wider/longer. What I mean by that is, the same angle of rotation on a MacBook would make one side of the LCD panel less than a 1 mm lower than it should be (i.e. immeasurable).
    But, is 1 mm out something that Apple would happily fix, or am I just being too fussy a customer, expecting too much perfection?

  • R.I.P. iMac G5 Display 12/24/04 to 12/25/05

    Ok... I have been a MAC user from Centrum, to the first imacs, emacs, G3's, G4's, to finally the new G5's! Got my first generation iMac G5 last XMAS, pretty satisfied with it except for the JET ENGINE sounding fan that kept me up for the first 2 weeks. So Apple fixes that problem for the rest of the world, and on top of it.. hey why not just make it better, add a camera, make it thinner, add more HD.... ok well, I got screwed... oh well, that's what happens, not really complaining about that, let all the people out there who bought the iPod Nano before the iPod Video came out right after complain about that issue. What I am complaining about, is one day after my warranty expires my iMac G5's disaply goes black! I live in Japan now, so I take the train to the nearest APPLE STORE and try to expalin the problem in my second grade elementary school level Japanese. The guy I spoke to was nice, and kindly told me that there have been some issues with the iMac model that I purchased and that if it is a problem with the Logic Board it can be fixed for free!!! YEAH!!!! So I'm all happy, glad that I have been a Mac Supporter for all these years, almost feeling like it's a family thing. So, then I get this call telling me that it wasn't a problem with the Logic Board but with my LCD Display, basically burned out!!! To fix, not free but $700... but.... if I send it to America they can do it for free????? I didn't really understand what he was saying, maybe I need to study Japanese more, but why would cost $700 in Japan and free in America? Isn't Apple the same everywhere? More than that.... 1 year and LCD burns out??? What's up with that!!?

    Hi Aaron,
    The regular warranty for the iMac is country / region specific. If you read the terms you will see that the user has to obtain the necessary service in the country or region where it was purchased. Only products defined as "portable" (ie Powerbooks, ibooks and iPods) are covered internationally.
    (the same applies to AppleCare, by the way. If you had it you would still have to return teh Mac to the country of purchase for service.)
    The picture with the motherboard extended iMac G5 Rev A motherboard coverage is a bit more confused, though when I asked for clarification about this from Apple a while back I was told that it, too, required the computer to be returned to the country of purchase.
    If they are offering free repair as long as you ship the computer to the US I'd grab it.
    This is the first time I've ever heard of an iMac LCD screen actually burning out. Sounds like you have been very unlucky.

  • 17" Studio LCD Display connect to G3

    I recently purchased a 17" Studio LCD Display which came with an ADC to DVI adapter.
    Then I picked up an adapter, but it was the wrong kind. It was DVI to VGA which still required the present VGA/G3 adapter ... the connection was going through three adapters that way. The monitor didn't light up. When I pressed the On/Off button (bottom right on front of display) the button lit up while my finger was on it and then faded to dark when I removed my finger. The system did not recognize the connection on the pci card either. I was able to hook everything up physically but the display didn't go on.
    When I plugged the UBS pigtail in, my system could see and recognize the monitor on the UBS port. So apparently, the driver software won't be a problem.
    Rather than putzing with adapters and connectors, I'd prefer to swap out the VGA card with a DVI video card for the G3. Is there such a video card available for the G3?
    Is this even feasible?
    The reason I need to keep this G3 is because it has a SCSI port (running Classic 9.2.2) which I require for an expensive high end scanner. Until I can find a comparable unit compatible with my new iMac I'd like to keep the G3 but would really like to hook up the lcd display on it.
    Any ideas?

    Exactly my problem too (and many others surely!)
    I have a macbook and a 17" LCD studio display which has a plug with 30 pins. As understand it, it is a DVI-I dual ink.
    I was about to buy the DVI adaptor from the mac store as it would appear to do the job but I learned that it is DVI-D and not DVI-I as is required. I searched for another picture of this adaptor (the pic on the mac store is decidely unhelpful) and it is clear from looking at it that it will not fit.
    Anyone know what to do here?

    Dear All,
    I would like to connect my powerbook with external 19" LCD display. But I only can find the resolution as follows
    640x480
    720x480
    800x600
    896x600
    1024x768
    1152x768
    1280x852
    But the 19" LCD display can support 1440x900. But I can't find this resolution in above table. But I found the following info at ATI website.

    As you can see, the card is a GeForce FX 5200. The web site refers to iMac G5's with GeForce FX 5200 Ultra cards and not the GeForce FX 5200. (My iMac is a Rev A machine).
    Do you think this will cause issues? I need to run the iMac and the LCD at a show for my company and I am a bit concerned that I might end up with a Mac with no working display. Is that likely?

  • Connecting an Apple 17" LCD Display to my PowerBook

    I'm a complete novice at displays and I need some very basic advice!
    I'm thinking of getting an Apple 17" LCD Display off eBay. I know I need a connector/adapter and these seem to be also available on eBay although they do seem to vary from about £4 to £30! Do I need other connectors - say for power? What are the combined power connectors I've seen? I want to link it to my 550 Powerbook Titanium.
    Is there a specific connector I need? What do I need to look out for? Is there a reason why they vary in price? Is/was there an Apple part number I can look out for?
    Also, can I use the same connector to link up a non Apple display?
    What do people think about Formac flat panels?
    Any thoughts on what's best?

    Hi, Russ. The Apple Studio Display 17" LCD (with a
    clear acrylic case) connects to a Mac through its ADC
    port, which is designed to feed video data, USB, and
    power to the display through a single cable. Your
    550MHz Tibook has a VGA-out port, which does not
    supply power to a connected display, nor does it
    supply USB to enable the USB port(s) on the display.
    Apple's system requirements for the Studio Display
    include an ADC or DVI port on the computer driving
    the display. Your Powerbook model has neither, so I
    suspect it can't drive the Studio Display at all.

    All other LCD displays I've ever seen offered for
    less than $2000 are distant runners-up to Apple's
    LCDs in image quality. I don't recall whether I've
    ever seen a Formac LCD, but I would expect it to be

    Thanks eww. But can I get an adapter which plugs into my vga port and converts to dvi? As I said in my post, I'm a no-hoper on all this stuff but I'm sure I've seen somewhere that Powerbooks like mine can display through an external monitor.
    I mentioned the 17" Apple display because I (like you) think they are the best. I'm not too bothered about the extra USB on the screen but what you say about power also is a problem Can I get a power supply as well as a connecting adapter?
    PS - I was also hoping to be ale to use the Apple display to give me a better view when using my G3 iMac DVSE but it looks that's a gonner too!!

  • MacMini to iMac 27" Display

    Can I connect an older Mac Mini (approx 2007) to a new iMac 27" display - I am about to purchase one but in doing so will be removing the PC/LCD monitor...
    So what options do I have or is this a non-starter?

    Note for iMac 27" users only: Even our box is capable of passing high resolutions up to 1920x1200, users of iMac 27" will only be able to get picture with resolutions up to 1280x720 (720P). The reason for it is that iMac 27" native resolutions are: 800x600, 1280x720 or 2560x1440 (since our box is limited to single link (1920x1200), and can't work with 2560x1440 it will take the next resolution down the list which is 720p. *We are working on AT-DP400 which will allow dual link resolutions (such as 2560x1440) to pass though*. For PS3 or Xbox users, you can use our converter without additional devices at only 720p resolution. Make sure to set 720p prior connecting it to the DP200.

  • IMac & ADC display

    I have an older Apple LCD display with the ADC connector, which I can use with my (even older) PowerMac. It's a great monitor, and I'd hate to have it just sit around when I upgrade...hopefully to an iMac.
    I know there are connectors for mini-DVI to VGA or DVI, but would it be possible to go from mini-DVI to ADC? Or would a mini-DVI to DVI and then a DVI to ADC adapter have to be the way to go? Has anyone tried this before?

    Yes, thanks. But has anyone actually daisy-chained several connectors together to make sure it works with an ADC display? I just don't want to spend the $100+ and find out that it doesn't work. In theory it seems like it should, but one can never fully tell with technology.

  • Faint horizontal lines accross iMac lcd

    Had a 24" iMac that developed faint horizontal lines across the lcd that got progressively darker the longer the computer was on. Had the lcd replaced by Apple twice, but after a couple of weeks the problem returned. They gave me a new iMac, but a month in I have the same problem with the new machine. Has anyone encountered this problem? Is it an inherent issue with iMac lcds or is it something external affecting my machine? And I'm not talking poltergeist. Help, want this fixed.

    We have a 20" imac Core Duo that was purchased summer 2006 - then about 5 or 6 months ago, it started developing horizontal lines across applications (Safari, Mail, etc) and the desktop - sometimes they would go away, sometimes not... I thought is was some video driver conflicting, upgraded to snow leopard, went to the genius bar, etc... but lately it got worse to the point that it started locking up every day... this after going weeks or months without a reboot and over 3 years having almost zero crashes...
    I read in a forum where the video chip (GPU - graphics processing unit) was heat sensitive and thought that after 3+ years, maybe it was dusty in there... I installed the iStat widget to monitor the temp of the GPU and installed a fan control (software) where you can increase the minimum speed of the hard drive fan (allegedly located above the GPU). I also put the end of the vacuum on the fan vent just above where the power cord goes into the back of the monitor and let it run for a while hoping to clean things out...
    5 days later - zero display issues, zero hangs and zero crashes - and the GPU runs an average of 25 degrees cooler than before. This after a genius bar guy told me that it probably needs a new display board. Good Luck!
